pinkypink13's Recruitment Saga

Hi y'all! I have so enjoyed reading all the stories and appreciate the many words of wisdom on this site. I'll keep you in mind while I'm going through this week. :)

My rush experience started last night at our Orientation where I met my Recruitment group and Recruitment Counselors (RC's) and learned all the standard guidelines and rules for the week. While I have been RIDICUOUSLY excited at the prospect of going through rush all summer, I have to admit that walking into that auditorium filled with MANY MANY girls was frightening. The anxiety was something I wasn't really prepared for. I quickly became aware of how stunningly beautiful my peers are, and I know that many have resumes that are just as impressive, if not more impressive, than my own. A wave of inadequacy hit me and part of me almost wanted to run out of the auditorium and never look back! However, after meeting my darling RC's and introducing myself to some of the girls in my rush group, I felt a bit more relaxed.

When I got back to my dorm after orientation, I got SO homesick for my mom. She has been my rock in each one of my important milestones thus far, so not having her there to give me a hug and some encouragement was difficult. Just seeing her picture around my dorm room started making me a little teary.:( Fortunately, I have a wonderful roommate and many friends on my floor going through rush. Thank God for them!

Today I will be visiting 4 houses, although I will have to miss one or two parties due to an academic conflict ( I will make those up tomorrow). There are ten chapters on my campus (alphabetically):

Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Phi
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Sigma Delta Tau

I decided to use shades of PINK as my code names, just because it is the best color ever!

In no particular order...

Fuschia
Coral
Bubblegum
Flamingo
Rose
Magenta
Ballet Slipper
Cerise
Cherry Blossom
Salmon

Today I visit Fuschia, Flamingo, Salmon and Cherry Blossom. Gotta go get ready!

UCFlover 08-28-2008 05:50 PM

Yay. So excited to hear your story. Go bubblegum!!!!

AGDee 08-28-2008 06:03 PM

I'm glad you didn't use Pepto Bismol pink as one of your code names :)

Best of luck on your recruitment! Have fun!!!!

kappa_dancer 08-28-2008 06:11 PM

Good luck with your recruitment!! Being a ballet dancer, I have to admit I'm pulling for Ballet Slipper!!

Football Fan 08-28-2008 07:17 PM

Good luck, Pinky

Have fun during recruitment. There are other women who posted earlier who are also participating at your university. I hope they add their stories as well.

joliebelle 08-28-2008 07:51 PM

good luck during recruitment! Pink is one of my favorite colors and im pulling for flamingo!

APhi4Ever 08-28-2008 08:45 PM

Cherry Blossom!

piphiangel314 08-28-2008 10:09 PM

Every time I hear Pepto Bismal pink, I think of Steel Magnolias. :) I was in the play as Ouiser so it's second nature...

but go Ballet Slipper! :D

ZTA72 08-28-2008 10:46 PM

go Salmon...love that color :)

honeychile 08-28-2008 10:55 PM

Another pink lover here! Since flamingo has been taken, I'll go with rose - my favorite rose is a cream tea rose, which blossoms pink and smells heavenly!

texas*princess 08-28-2008 11:09 PM

Good luck! I'm going to pull for magenta because I've always liked magenta

violetpretty 08-28-2008 11:17 PM

I'll cheer for magenta because the walls of my room are magenta!

MerryGPhiB 08-29-2008 01:12 AM

cheering for all pink!!

Be yourself, enjoy the process! I love pink, just add abit of brown! And whala!

I look forward to hearing more!:D

GPhiBLtColonel 08-29-2008 01:25 AM

Fight on!:p

JennRN 08-29-2008 09:32 AM

Good luck Pinky!!!

My cousin is going through Rush at USC also, and I am so excited for her!!!

violetpretty 08-29-2008 09:39 AM

Isn't it bad form to out a PNM who hasn't outed herself? True, only one school has that exact combination of chapters, but not everyone reading would know that, and the OP didn't say where she goes.

pinkypink13 08-29-2008 12:41 PM

Post Conversation-Day Update!

Thank you for all your encouragement! It's so much fun to log on and see all your nice comments. :) Posting this info. is also good for me as it helps me remember everything! (I'm already forgetting the sorority girls I talked to yesterday! Yikes!)

My first day of rush was truly a blast! I had expected to be a lot more nervous, but fortunately, I was thrown into my first party so fast I didn't have time to be anxious.

My first house was Flamingo. Known as one of the top houses on campus, I had pretty high expectations. The first thing I observed was how incredibly beautiful the house and the girls were. I was initially creeped out by the hundreds of smiling faces and simultaneously snapping hands, but I have since grown to love it! I was met by one Flamingo at the door, who led me outside onto an incredible patio area, where I met another sister. I was glad to be outside so I could actually hear over the din of a million female voices! I spoke with my sister for most of the party, and was pleased with how easily everything flowed. However, I would sometimes feel like she wasn't really listening to what I was saying, as she would ask a question, laugh/nod at my comment and then ask another question. A third sister walked up, and the two of them walked me out to the door. On the way out, they seemed to be talking to each other a lot more than they were talking to me, which also bothered me. Overall, I enjoyed my time at Flamingo and I would like to go back, but I feel like I need to speak with the girls a lot more.

Next was Fuschia. While I had enjoyed Flamingo, it was nothing like my experience at Fuschia! Again, both the house and the girls were mind-blowingly beautiful. I really made a connection with the Fuschia I was talking to- she was hilarious! Her humor was refreshing, as all the other girls I had just talked to were SOOOOO sweet, almost too sweet. I also felt like we talked about more than the normal surface stuff I discussed at every other house. The president came over midway through our conversation to introduce herself, which was exciting! When the party ended, the Fuschia sister and I both agreed that it had ended too soon! She gave me a hug when I left (no other chapters did that) and wished me good luck. I was so happy when I left the house knowing that I had experienced that "special something" you all talk about in your recruitment stories.

After a short break, we headed out to Salmon. Unfortunately, this was the worst house of the night. I met three girls and honestly cannot remember a single sister's name as they switched them out so fast. My first sister led me by the hand into one of the sitting rooms, which I thought was a little weird. She was also shaking the whole time- I felt terrible that she was so nervous! Our conversation was somewhat awkward, as my Salmon would ask me a question, listen to my answer and then tie it back to her sorority so she could endorse the chapter to me. I completely understand the need for some bragging on your chapter, but sometimes these connections were completely unrelated and I didn't really know how to respond afterwards. When I started subconsciously looking for a clock in the room to indicate how much time I had left, I knew this house was not for me.

Our final house was Cherry Blossom. This ended up being a fitting name, as the girls were very soft and sweet. I spoke with two girls, both of whom did a good job of balancing the actual conversation with talking about their chapter. I intuitively could tell that these girls were genuinely kind and warm people. Our conversation, which wasn't as good as my conversation at Fuschia, was a little bit awkward at times, but I still enjoyed talking to these girls. I loved the outfits they picked and their house felt so warm and cozy. Midway through the party, the sisters all got together and sang a song for us, which I though was cute. I definitely want to go back to this house!

Today is going to be crazy! I visit Coral, Bubblegum, Rose, Magenta, Ballet Slipper and Cerise. Wish me luck!

Well, the culprit does have a history of stalking PNMs -- especially when they don't come back to GC to post an update. I'm sure outing their school falls into the same category. It's almost as if it's expected behavior from her.

Benzgirl 08-29-2008 01:46 PM

PinkRose1098 08-29-2008 01:48 PM

I'm going to have to cheer for Cherry Blossom or Ballet Slipper just because I'm making my daughter a princess dress and it's close to those colors.

Good luck!

WinniBug 08-29-2008 02:17 PM

Cerise is my favorite shade of pink.

Go cerise!

Hmmm  You may have already done this - I would not know - but I'd say it "could" be bad form to post your concerns here first instead of PM-ing "the culprit" about what you view as an error or bad form....

Hmm... but when dealing with a GCer that has a chronic PNM stalking problem (and we have proof of that), it's probably best to publicly call them out on it.

Wait-are you talking about me here? Because I have never "stalked" a PNM.

And yes, I mentioned USC-and since it upset people here, I sent a pm to the OP telling her that I would be more than happy to edit my post if she wished it.

Benzgirl 08-29-2008 04:54 PM

OP, since you have been "outed" by other students at you college, you may want to refrain from posting until after recruitment has been completed.

I know this would have been a good thread, but many of us don't want you chances to be ruined by a couple of people who post less than subtle hints on the board.

If you think it's you, then maybe it is.

Or maybe I'm talking about someone else with a past history of calling contacts to find out fates of GC PNMs.

Even if someone has outed her school she has said literally nothing to give her away and hundreds and hundreds of women go through recruitment at this school. I think she will be fine.

It's happened on GC before. So you don't know that she'll be fine.

pinky I would listen to what Benzgirl said!

I wouldn't necessarily assume that.

Girls from bigger recruitments HAVE been negatively affected by things they said on GC before.

Heck, just this season alone, someone going through rush at Kentucky was easily identified by the time she got to post #5.

Best of luck on your recruitment! Have fun!!!!

See, I think it would've been funny. When I was in college, we had a hallway that some genius decided should be Pepto Bismol pink and we always referred to it as the "Pepto Bismol pink hallway." Thankfully it's no longer pink.

/end hijack

pinkypink13 - Good luck with the rest of your recruitment! I agree with the previous posters that as much as I would like to hear your story, it's probably in your best interest to wait until your finished.

A quick report...

Thanks to all for your encouragement & advice. I am planning to wait until rush is finished before I continue my story since it is so obvious which school I'm attending. I had no idea how obvious it was! I guess y'all really know your stuff.

Rush is going really well- It has truly been a blast! I'm so looking forward to finding my new home tomorrow night. :D

Pinkypink-- I'm looking forward to hearing your story! I have no clue where you are ( school) but I am excited to hear your results. Have a great time!
Smiles:D

I'm so disappointed to inform you that I dropped out of rush today. It was pretty brutal for many girls- 4 out of the 9 girls on my floor dropped in the last two days.

Don't worry about disappointing us. You have to do what's best for you. Do enjoy your time at USC though, it's a great school.

MerryGPhiB 09-02-2008 01:22 AM

I agree....

... with KSUViolet. I am sorry this didn't work out for you. You're at a great school and there will be many opportunities to come your way.

Thank you for sharing.
