hang over tips?
do u guys have any good tips on how to get rid of or prevent hang overs? i got my first one of the schoolyear just this morning and i was definitely not a happy camper the whole day...(it totally didnt go away and i didnt stop throwing up until like 4 pm). the bad thing was i got it from jungle juice which gave me the same thing last year. I guess i just can't learn my lesson eh?
|
That sounds really bad! Did you watch your drink the whole time? I hope nobody added an "extra" ingredient...I SWEAR that happened to me before....blarckeckbarf...
The bad hangover yuckiness is usually 'cause you're way dehydrated, so if you can force down water and eat a little something like some crackers or something, it gets your body hydrated and gets your blood sugar back to normal. My fiance's bro swears by Powerade with an aspirin dissolved in it as a cure, but for me aspirin upsets my stomach anyway, so it's just water and crackers and trying NOT to move...one time I made the mistake of crashing on the top bunk at the sorority house when I was in "bad shape". Piece of advice...stay close to the floor...I guess my judgement was altered...hmmm..... Be safe and feel better :) |
Yeah, water and something light to eat usually does the trick. For those of you over 21.... if you are at a bar and are pretty drunk but want to one it down while still hanging out, order potato skins. That always works for me when me and my friends go out.
Getting rid of hangovers is a lot more difficult. Usually, forcing down some water along with a vitamin usually does the trick. Taking one of those daily vitamin things gives you nutrients so you don't feel like you just want to lie down all day imho. |
The best thing I have found for hangovers is saltine crackers and a CAN of Pepsi. It HAS to be a can because fountain Pepsi isn't bubbly enough. And, I might add, it HAS to be a FRESH can. Hope this helps!

Tracy, that is something I haven't heard before but is a great idea. I can see how pepsi would work, with the caffeine and all. I will have to try that next time.

WATER WATER WATER WATER WATER!!! :D
Do what I did, I trained myself to drink a great big glass of water when I got home from being out. When you're still a little tipsy, it's easy to drink the water. If you drink a huge glass of water before you go to sleep and more water when you wake up, you'll be much improved. Pretty much all of the physiological symptoms of a hangover are the result of dehydration. Also - food!!! There's a good reason why everyone craves pizza after a night of drinking. Bread products are FABULOUS for absorbing the alcohol from your system (the more absorbed, the less to screw with you the next day) and cheese is good too. I don't remember why cheese works but it does. So, plan ahead! Keep a water bottle in your fridge and the # for Domino's handy! G8Ralphaxi "It's not alcoholism, it's cultural pride. I always get a hangover if I go to bed while I'm still drunk. So I try to sober up before I go to bed. Sometimes I just can't stay awake that long (since alcohol is a depressant) so when I do get hangovers, I do what everyone else says... I drink lots of water and try to eat bread products. I had one Saturday morning, and it was gone within a few hours. As for preventing getting sick... If I know something has made me sick in the past, I don't drink it anymore. For example, I learned not to take multiple shots of tequila after drinking vodka, after I got sicker than I have ever been in my life!
|
I've heard from a couple a guys that the best thing to do is down a beer or glass of booze of whatever you were drinking last night. Something about the acids in your stomach.
I don't know about caffeine, it's a dieretic which would make you even more dehydrated. I geuss it's different for everyone. |
Yeah, drinking a beer works well too.

Not going to bed drunk is the key for me.
Usually, coming home and getting in as hot a shower as I can stand, and staying there for a long time will sober me up enough to go to bed. McDonald's for food the next day, the grease soaks it all up. :) Lots and Lots and Lots of water. Its hard to drink when you're feeling bad, but trust me, the more you drink the better off you are--- Example-- I was in Dewey Beach DE a few weeks ago and we drank from 11am on. Raspberry Vodkas and Sprites. By 8pm must have had like 11 and was SCARY drunk AND sick. Started drinking water and eating ice right then and there and kept downing it all night long--went to bed at like2am and when I woke up the next day--no hangover at all. My friends, who drank the same amount of vodka nut didn't have the water--couldn't even lift their heads up off their pillows. |
thanks u guys! im actually printing out this thread for *ehem* later reference.
yeah i did watch my drink the whole time and i watched the guy fill up the cup from the thermos thingie itself :) but thanks for your concern. |

Ginger Ale is a pretty one too. I agree that water is one of the best ideas. It helps flush your system out. Sometimes I like to go the gym in morning and sit in the steam room. Sweating the alcohol out helps :) Also, always keep your liquor and beer seperate. Never Never mix the two or beware. :) Esp. Tequilla.

As far as after you have done the deed, as usual, drink water, and chew on some regular coffee grounds. That's a family recipe. I did the water without coffee once, and got horribly sick the next morning. Some sort of apple-flavored shot that messed the entire party up, except the birthday girl, who didn't drink because she had a cold and had to drive home! LOL |
I agree with all the water suggestions. Drink as much water as you can before you go to bed.
When you have those mornings when you are puking up even water (that sick yellow bile hurl...sorry for the graphic images), I suggest some greasy food. I always crave fries the next day. It really helps absorb the alcohol. I think it has to do with what your body processes first. When you add heavy fat in the mix, your body focuses on breaking that down. If you can get out of bed, then get to the gym. Sweat out all the alcohol. Make sure you drink a lot of water through out the work out. Trust me, you will feel soo much better afterwards. For all those "morning after beer/drink" suggestions...wow...that's crazy! The morning after a vodka filled night, I can't even smell my facial toner because the smell alone makes me ill. |
Puking always helps...
If you're feeling really crappy before bed, and have a hint of nausea, I'd suggest just trying to make yourself vomit and get it out of your system. Its not pretty and its certainly not fun, but its a very quick exit to the alcohol.
Water is always the best bet. Lots and lots and lots of water. But of course, by the time I get to drinking the water, it starts to make me nauseous. I'm also prone to eating Doritos before going to bed/immediately after waking up. Guess its that grease theory again. The day after is always filled with lots of water and a great pair of sunglasses for me. Be careful when taking a very hot shower if you're still feeling poorly - I did that once and I think it somehow reactivated all the stuff in my system - I felt HORRIBLE afterwards. And, if you're ever in Baton Rouge, the best hangover cure is chicken fingers from Rasin' Cane's. Works EVERY time :D |
Puking does do the trick for most people. Little off topic, I have this condition wherby when I puke I get such a bad head rush the capillaries on my face burst leaving me with little red dots mostly around my eyes. They look kind of like freckles and stay there for about 3-4 days. I was just wondering if anyone gets these, or if you've ever heard of them?
Idea for new thread: worst puking stories  |

A team can't compete if all their players are kids. Word is the sens camp wasn't that impressed by Spezza's play.
BTW, they're coming to your hometown to play a pre-season match vs florida in a few weeks. |
I am going to the game. That is all

That makes more sense. But eating greasy food the day after is NOT an appealing thought! |
I have to agree with everyone else, my trick is drinking at LEAST 4 glasses of water before going to bed, I can drink like a fish, but drink lots of water before bed and be fine, I've done the same thing without any water, or only a little water before bed, and been sick as hell the next day..
Just to add the convo..I also crave grease the next day, usually a green chile cheeseburger, or taco bell..mmm :) |
Everyone hit the main points. Food before or during drinking will go far to prevent nausea the next day.
Dehydration is a major cause of hang-over type feeling, the other is the fact that alcohol breaks down into acetylaldehyde something that is 20 times more toxic than alcohol . . . I drink between 1 and two gallons of water a day for fitness purposes. I rarely if ever feel anything resembling a hang over even after some outrageous drinking. Drink lots of water at least 10 glasses during the day, BEFORE going out. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is an amino acid that is a precursor to Glutathione one of the most potent anti-oxidants and a great liver protector. ITs what they give you if you go into liver failure from a tylenol overdose. In an experiment with rats they had a control group, a NAC group, a Glutathione Group, a L-cysteine Group (another Glutathione precursor). They gave each group a lethal dosage of alcohol. Every rat in the control group died, 30% of the Glutathione group survived, 70% of the l-cysteine group lived . . . and 100% of the NAC group made it. You can buy NAC at any health food store and you should take 500-600mg with a 1000-2000mg of Vitamin C before going out and preferably every 4 hours of drinking or at least before you go to bed. It will prevent Hang-overs! In the interest of science (James piously adjusts his halo) myself and a couple friends decided to test the NAC/Vitamin C theory. So on New Years we went to a club with a 4 hour top-shelf-open-bar. We got there just as the open bar started. By midnight we didn't care about the dropping apple. In fact, I don't think we even noticed it falling! They took the NAC/Vitamin C as I mentioned, and they had no hang overs the next day:) And they were both notoriously bad drinkers when it came to after affects and kept up with me when I out weighed them by 40-50 pounds. Could have been a placebo effect but was promising:) |
uh, <lifesaver sounding really dumb after that last post>, drink water and stuff.
Seriously, its been said before, but I swear by water. Also I am always hungry after drinking, so that helps me. I also pop 2 asprin before bed, and if I wake up in the night to piss or something, just to stay ahead of the game. Importnat fact to mention here that has been overlooked. NEVER take Tylenol while you are drunk, asprin if you can handle it. Tylenol BY ITSELF is really rough on your liver (a fact the makers hide very well), and when combinded with the effects of alcohol, can do damage, permanent damage. Something like 6 months of regular usage of tylenol and alcohol will age your liver like 30 years. Be careful. My freshman year I experimeinted with this stuff you can but at Rite-Aid, Walgreens, etc.. I think it was called Rid-X or something. It was caffene, asprin, and Maalox combined that you took (symbolically) a shot of before bed, with 32 oz of water. Always worked well for me, but I havent gotten off my arse to go get any in the last couple of years. |
I stay up as late as I can so I can sober up. I fill up a BIG water bottle and take that to bed with me, drinking it until I fall asleep and polishing it off in the morning. After I wake up i drink a glass of cranberry juice (the sugar in it makes you feel soooo much better) or orange juice (the potassium in that is REALLY helpful) and I eat a banana if I can stomach it (again, for the potassium, b/c your body loses potassium when you get dehydrated, which you are the morning after.)
A hot shower makes you feel like a new person. Also, pancakes or waffles (w/o maple syrup) and home fries are a miracle cure! But if I am REALLY bad, like too sick to move or whatever, I make myself throw up, nasty as that sounds. Somehow getting all the toxins and stuff out of my system really helps me get over it - this only works when you are ridiculously hungover though. |
OK again yes water is a great thing when you're a little on the tipsy side:) And eating something yes that is great too like our little 4 am trips to get chicken tenders lol Also I know that throwing up doesn't ever help me it actually makes me worse. Its funny I usually dont ever get hangovers but if I do throw up I will get one!! It's horrible!!! But anyways Water and food are my remedies!
Nichole |
So, the consensus seems to be to drink a lot of water. I also take a couple of pain killers (Aspirin, Excedrin, etc.) before bed if I've overindulged.
There is one other thing that nobody has mentioned so far... Don't drink so much. Just a suggestion. Wish I'd thought of it myself a few times. DeltAlum |
Hangover, relief
I always felt and was told that drinking water AFTER will only make things worse.
My suggestion is: take a nasy BC or Goody's powdered medicine BEFORE you drink. That is the best remedy yet. Now the P....., it does well when one has a cold or the sinuses are bothering you. After that, I didn't have one sniff or drip or cough. LOL Someone told me, that drinking beers the next morning helps, too. I don't know about that. :p |
Mom Bucks remedy, eat butter or something to coat you stomach before you go out will help keep you sober for a start!
Nothing like a good clod beer the next morning, right ex, being a proffesional drinker when i owned a liquor store and speak from experience! It is better to watch what you are doing in this day and age because some morons may slip something in your drink!' Be aware! Do not drink sweet drinks as the sugar gets alchol into your system faster and stronger! Drink with water! I drink only wine or scotch and that with water! Hangovers hurt like hell!!!!! And last!!!!! Eat greasy burgers or fries, may sound bad but helps! |
Yes, avoid the sweet drinks, they will mess you up!
Now, I have found drinking like crown or hennessey on the rocks with "wateredback" does not affect me at all. But those, Tom Collilns, Amareto sour/Amareto and Pineapple juice, etc. would kick my butt. I stay away from 'em. NOW! I don't drink as much. Now, I'm more of a sociable drinker. |
nail with the hammer, you guys weren't joking when you said stay away from the sweet stuff...last night my roommate, another fraternity prez, and I myself had a bright idea to mix slushies (slush puppies, not sure if they exist in the states) with vodka and then gin when we ran out of that. These slushies are pure sugar and did they ever do the job, my abs sure got a workout ;)
|
slushie
You mean like a Slurpee at 7-11?
|
Slush Puppy, that's the name - i geuss they're like a slurpie, but sweeter. Everyone loved them, but jezz were they ever potent.
|
That is soooo true, I feel you there Delta Alum:) Sometimes, as you keep drinking, you feel buzzed, buzzed, then gone . . .
