BabyFlamingo's Recruitment

I just got off the phone with my daughter, BabyFlamingo, who has just completed pref night at the University of Central Oklahoma. Bid day is Wednesday evening!!!! Does anyone care to hear more?

ASUADPi 08-27-2008 12:24 AM

YES!!!!!!!

MerryGPhiB 08-27-2008 12:46 AM

Let's hear more!

Absolutely!!!!!!! let's hear more!!!!:):D

pinkflamingo 08-27-2008 03:02 AM

Ok... I can't sleep, so I'll start her story.

Like I said, BabyFlamingo is at the University of Central Oklahoma- not my alma mater and where my GLO isn't represented. Both of these situations bummed me out a little at first, but UCO is a great match for her, I think, and has an excellent school in her field of interest. It seems like a very friendly, helpful place, mostly commuter.

There are four solid NPC chapters there: Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, and Sigma Kappa.

BabyF went there knowing only a handful of people, including her roommate. Class has been in session for over a week now, and she has been EXTREMELY homesick. The first week she called home several times a day in tears, ready to bag the whole college experience. I kept saying... "Hang on until rush. It will get better!" She wouldn't believe me.

More to come.....

MerryGPhiB 08-27-2008 03:14 AM

I'm up too!

just as an FYI I probably speak to my daughter more since she went to college than when she was home. She's a senior now and I still speak to her at leasts 2-3 times a week. We have a great relationship and she has learned such independence being in her chapter.

okay, i'm ready for more........:D

pinkflamingo 08-27-2008 09:43 AM

And so rush began....
Day 1: Still homesick, still pessimistic, and extremely nervous, BabyFlamingo ventured off for the first day, which included house tours. She was thrilled to note that each house provided much more inviting living quarters than her old musty dorm! One group quickly became her favorite. She enjoyed everyone she met and felt extremely comfortable there. Another group was a close second.

Day 2: BabyF was excited to see she'd been invited to all four philanthropy parties. She enjoyed them all, but Favorite from Day 1 topped them all again. Their philanthropy was near and dear to her heart and she hit it off with everyone she met there. #2 from the previous day remained a close second.

Day 3: After she called me, stressed out over a wardrobe dilemma, BabyF had a full schedule for 3-party skit day, including her top two! She enjoyed the refreshments and entertainment at each house, but knew that Favorite was close to capturing her heart, and #2 still stayed a close second.

Day 4: BabyF was beyond thrilled to be invited back to her top two for pref night. Her first party was "Close Second". She was paired up with the girl she had on day 3. She had enjoyed meeting this girl before, but as the conversation flowed and they both let their guard down, she felt a bond being formed. As the ceremony began, and everyone's tears flowed, she really felt a connection to the group as a whole that she hadn't felt before. When it was over, she didn't want to leave! While she was at "Favorite's" party, she realized her heart was still back with Close Second! What to do? After a long talk with her Rho Gam, she realized she had a new favorite!

She is extremely excited about bid day... tonight... and will be THRILLED with either house! I realized I haven't heard "I want to come home now" since the day before rush started!

By the way, BabyF's roommate preffed the other two groups!

I love all this goodness.

WVU alpha phi 08-28-2008 11:02 AM

Congrats to your daughter and AGD!! The homesickness should fade away now, she'll be so busy during her pledge period that she won't have a chance to miss home! I was extremely homesick my first semester of college but after getting more involved in the sorority and a roommate change, I LOVED the rest of my college experience.

SassyPantsAGD 08-28-2008 12:31 PM

Whooo!!!

Congrats to Baby Flamingo!!!

And congrats to Alpha Gam...they are lucky to have her!:D:D:D

AOII Angel 08-28-2008 12:42 PM

I so love the stories where girls go to pref with their minds made up and have to change their minds at the end of a tear stained party! Cograts to your daughter!

pinkflamingo 08-28-2008 05:23 PM

On behalf of BabyF thank you for all the well wishes! AGDee, we checked out the squirrel store and it will be a great source for Christmas ideas!

I was a Phi Mu at Oklahoma State, and although things turned out great for me in the end, my recruitment experience was not all happies like my daughter's...I ended up dropping out of rush, then giving Phi Mu a second chance through COB. I'm glad I did, but I missed out on all the bid day excitement, etc. So it was fun to see her experience it. Believe me, I drilled it into her head to keep an open mind and see the potential in each group!

pinkflamingo 08-28-2008 05:37 PM

Oh! and one more nifty tidbit! Baby F and I both belong to the Epsilon Nu chapters of our respective sororities!

That's a really fun tidbit! I highly recommend starting her collection of squirrel ornaments this year! Eventually, when the kids leave, my whole Christmas tree will be red, buff, green and Alpha Gam ornaments (including squirrels).

Benzgirl 08-28-2008 11:40 PM

Welcome BabyF, and congratulations! We are happy to have her.

ktbug10474 08-29-2008 01:49 AM

Welcome to the sisterhood BabyF!!!!!!

Katmandu 08-29-2008 09:19 AM

I was a Phi Mu at Oklahoma State...

Go Pokes! So glad it worked out well for BabyFlamingo! Congrats to her and to Alpha Gam. She is off to a great start! You mentioned houses.... I have never seen the sorority houses at UCO... are they nice? Where are they located?

The Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa, and Alpha Xi houses are on the northeast corner of campus. The Delta Zeta house is just a couple of years old, really pretty. The Alpha Xi's just moved in to a vacant fraternity house. I know they're excited to have a house now. The Alpha Gam's are west of campus, with a couple of fraternity houses nearby. It reminds me a little bit of the Pi Phi house at OSU, especially on the side. I shall try to post one of my daughter's bid day pics in front of the house this weekend.

oooooh nice! I love that house.... Love to see pics when you get them. UCO has grown so much. Glad to hear the greek system is thriving. I'm sure it contributes greatly to a more 'residential' feel to the campus. Nice to hear a rush story from there!

Macon State? I thought she was at KSU (which since she always talked about Atlanta, I was assuming was Kennesaw State)? She has had AGD related things in her signature for a while now.

ETA: that's such an interesting little tidbit pinkflamingo. It's something special for you and your daughter to share!
