I hate your fake designer bag

Seriously. I've had it with all the fake bags. You think we can't tell, but we can.

I don't even want to carry my real Coach bags . . . so ticked off at the fakes being EVERYWHERE.

LttleMsPrEp 08-22-2008 11:13 PM

I second that.. the fake handbags that make me the most mad are the fake Chanel ones. they're so blatantly fake it's kind of sad that people actually think that I don't know that it's a knockoff

epchick 08-22-2008 11:25 PM

So count me in the ones that CAN'T tell a fake from a real. I can tell the obvious ones--like the ones that have the Coach monogram, but instead of a C, its a G. But, I can't tell the different between the fake ones (like the one that I bought in SF for $30, that actually says "Coach" on it) and the real ones (like the one I bought at the Coach outlet).

There is a stand at one of small malls, that sells purses with the G monogram (is that the one y'all call "Goach?" lol) and that annoys me to no end. Or the fake LV monogram ones.

aephi alum 08-22-2008 11:35 PM

I don't get the whole bag thing. I just don't.

Real name-brand bags sell for somewhere north of $300. Knockoffs sell for much less, but fall apart. All I really need are a couple of evening bags, and a plain purse to carry on the rare occasion when I'm wearing an outfit without pockets.

WHY do women drop $300 or more on a handbag??

LttleMsPrEp 08-22-2008 11:53 PM

My mom always says that a person can tell alot about you from your handbag.. personally I only have like 3 handbags so since I know that i'll be using those bags alot(i.e. for books and other misc. items) I don't mind "dropping" $300 or more for the quality (even though i'm sure i'm mostly paying for the label) of the bag

OneTimeSBX 08-22-2008 11:54 PM

real women have bills to pay lmao! the day i have that much to drop on a PURSE...well, that will be a very good day for me.

my aunt hooked up with a guy in new york to buy fake Louis'...she told this story about how they couldnt know each others last names, she followed him into hallways, back alleys, and finally to a secret compartment in an apartment...like something out of a Borne movie lmao! she bought 50 purses for about a grand, and sold them for close to 5k...too sad.

SoCalGirl 08-23-2008 12:22 AM

Guess bags have the G logo too.

Dionysus 08-23-2008 12:44 AM

Fake or not, larger the handbag the smaller the brains.

My way to telling if it's a fake is by looking at the quality of the leather and the quality of the hardware. A real designer bag will tend to have softer, smoother leather. A fake will have rougher, poorer-quality leather. A real designer bag will have heavier, sturdier metal hardware. A fake will have lighter, flimsier hardware. Also, with a real bag, if you touch the hardware, it'll be cold metal to the touch...or if the bag's been out in sun, it'll be hot metal to the touch. The hardware on a fake will feel about room temperature.

AGDee 08-23-2008 01:35 AM

I probably shouldn't say this here because it makes me a very non-sorority girl, but I don't know enough about what designer bags look like to know whether I was carrying a knock off or not. Purses are the last thing I want to be spending my money on. Mine are generally utilitarian and usually from somewhere like Kohl's. Other than the obvious Coach Cs, I truly wouldn't know...

Those places are few & far btwn now. Thank goodness!
I will admit that I have gone to a place like that with a friend! I was worried the police were going to come out from somewhere & arrest us!!! A girl visiting from London was with us & asked "Aren't you going to buy anything?" and I replied "No I buy real bags" Looking back it was a bit snarky & bitchy but honest....

aggieAXO 08-23-2008 02:17 AM

I also hate fake handbags. I will admit I am obsessed with Louis V. Just bought my first one this year for my B-day and plan on buying some luggage next. I figure I have no husband or kids so what else am I going to spend money on? (besides stray animals/animal causes which i tend to spend quit a bit of $ on every year)

FYI - Lately if you look in T.J. Maxx or Marshalls you can find a decent stock of designer backs for a fraction of the price it just takes a bit of patience. . .

I went to the Navy Exchange the other day with my sister and couldn't believe how much cheaper the designer bags were! Of all places to find Coach, Fendi, and Dooney...the Navy Exchange! And they had a pretty decent selection.

I managed to not buy anything, but I did keep the NEX in mind when it's time to go shopping for a new purse!

DSTRen13 08-23-2008 07:20 AM

I know exactly why I spend more on accessories, lol. I buy super-cheap clothes because my size fluctuates so bad, so I buy nice things that don't have a size! :)

EEKappa 08-23-2008 08:43 AM

I bought my first Kate Spade bag from a vendor on the street near Dupont Circle in DC. I thought it looked pretty good and got lots of compliments until I saw the real thing and realized how cheezy mine looked by comparison. At least mine was a copy of an authentic design. There are lots of them sold at bag parties that are cute, but c'mon, Kate Spade has never made a bag with a thin stripe and a bow sewn on.

Then I learned that Kate Spade is a Kappa, and just can't buy the fakes anymore. (Gotta support a sister!) Though, I love to find them on ebay and at Saxs Off Fifth at 1/3 of the price.

Filene's basement is another great place to find designer bags for decent prices although it takes patience to find one worth buying i def. found a few after a good 45 minutes of searching.

I spend the money because I like them. I love purses and it bothers my mom how much I've spent on purses. But, all of my bills are paid, I don't go hungry, and I have a nice nest egg so why not? :)

Benzgirl 08-23-2008 10:07 AM

THANK YOU SWTX, I am so happy that I'm not the only one. It's time for me to come out of the closet and say,
That ghetto bag is NOT Chanel!
It's entirely disrespectful of Coco:)

Ugh... I agree.

I don't carry signature Coach for that very reason... (well that and I just plain don't like the print.)

sjsoffer 08-23-2008 10:59 AM

I have two expensive (For me) handbags now: a black leather coach and a Dooney hot pink huge bag. I think it's silly to carry fakes, but I don't care how expensive someone's bag is. If it's from target and cute, it's still cute.

AlphaFrog 08-23-2008 04:50 PM

The purse I own that's gotten the most compliments ever was a clutch type (with a small strap) that was black leather with some embroidery on the front (sort of 70's vintage looking) and it was $2.50 on the clearance shelf at Walmart. I must have gotten at least one compliment every time I carried it.

SWTXBelle 08-23-2008 06:36 PM

I started buying Coach Willis bags (and one Hobo) back a few years ago because they were well-made, classic, and not obnoxiously in-your-face with a designer's logo. Small tag, the signature hardware - nice.

I don't even like the REAL obnoxiously-in-your-face designs, but I do feel the only thing sillier than spending a lot of money to advertise the fact you are carrying a designer bag is spending a small amount of money to announce that you WANT to carry an obnoxiously-in-your-face design, but can't.

I am all for good leather or cloth bags, no matter who makes them. And I LOVE funky purses that reflect the personality of the person carrying them. You know who makes some NEAT purses, that aren't all that expensive? Cirque de Soleil! I was amazed! To this day, I remember a Lamar University pnm who had a purse that was an actual clock. (Alumnae held the pnm's purses while they were in the parties.)

groovypq 08-23-2008 06:47 PM

I saw a Foach (my general word for anything faux Coach) not too long ago that looked like some kind of molecule... it was an oval (closed C?) with a dot in the middle. Not even close. Why do they bother??

HAHAHAHHAHAH!

That was freaking awesome.

I feel like all these people carrying around fake Louis Vuittons (or trashy people carrying real ones) has turned me against the brand altogether.

My husband wonders why I need a big purse ... but whenever he needs a tape measure, or nail clippers, or bandaids, or whatever, it's me he turns to, and I always have it! I took that year of Girl Scouts to heart! :D

Good description. I've also noticed that fake Louis bags generally have a different color (more orangey) leather particularly for the handles.

My mom has a few LV bags from years ago vintage styles they no longer make which she started letting me use a few years ago. . . But now I dont even use them because the brand has just become so copied poorly same with coach. . . . The only designer bag I have that I really value is a Chanel from the early 80's that belonged to my grandma and that my mom gave me for my 21st birthday. . . But its more sentimental that status symbol. . .

To my way of thinking, that Chanel bag has FAR more status than the latest expensive bag. How cool, Nanners!

And I think the next spammer who wants to advertise their handbag wares really should post it here . . .

Were you listening to my conversation yesterday? ;)

My brother's fiancee and I had this conversation b/c she was admiring my small hobo Coach bag. The only reason I even have the bag is because someone in my company appreciated my team's support with a lengthy project and gave out gifts. Otherwise, I never would've had a Coach bag because I'm allergic to carrying an obviously fake version of the designer bag. I appreciate the designs, but gas is high!

I get compliments on my colorful bags that I get from Tarjay. Cute, functional, and Saturday night worthy.

You don't have to explain. :) You can carry your big bag anytime you want--I do. I love big bags because they fit my big wallet and my makeup bag. I don't carry them when I go out though. Big purses in nightclubs and parties always look just a little silly to me.

Those of you who say you don't carry your designer purses because there are so many fakes intrigue me. I don't get it. You don't want people to think your bag is fake? Who cares? I know I don't. I carry the purses because EYE like 'em so if someone thinks it's fake, I'll never know because I'll never care.

There is nothing worse than a lady with a big@$$ purse in a crowded nightclub/bar who is trying to move about the crowd.

Seriously lady? I think it's OK to leave your day planner, full-size brush, tape measure and sunglasses at home.

It's night, and you're in a BAR!!!

On normal work days I'll take out my big sized bags, but when I'm on a trip I only take smaller ones, and at the bars, I typically use wristlets. They are big enough for your ID, money, cell phone & lip gloss. It's all you need at a bar.

AOII Angel 08-24-2008 11:37 AM

I am a Coach fanatic ever since I bought my first black leather hobo bag three or four years ago. That leather is so soft and supple that no fake bag or cheap purse can duplicate. I have bought a few cloth bags from Coach, but they don't hold up well. I always feel like I've wasted money on them so now I just focus on the leather ones. My latest is this one...

It is absolutely beautiful and will last FOREVER!

You aint never LIED! i decided that i really wanted a Carly Coach bag:
http://s7d2.scene7.com/is/image/Coac...ont?$maintest$

but at $400, it wasnt happening. So... off to Canal Street i go, led up and down dark alleyways, behind walls and between floors to what i thought was a pretty good knockoff for a tenth of the price. Sweet!

A few weeks later, I'm happy-go-lucky walking down 5th Ave with my "Coach" and decide to actually go into the Coach store. Imagine my total embarrassment in mentally comparing my bag to the real deal.

Ooh i wish i had pics for yall, but everything SOPi said above is true. the leather was rough and stained weirdly in the rain, the hardware was flimsy as all hayle (one of the studs at the bottom poked through the bag and would always jab my fingers if i dug deep enough, and the zipper pull broke right off!) and generally, in comparison was an obvious knockoff. i hightailed it out of that store so fast and threw the bag away a few days later.

so yeah, no more knockoffs for me, just no-names of whatever looks cute. and like someone mentioned earlier, the most compliments ive gotten on my handbags tend to be ones that were cheap and from some random store.

Thetagirl218 08-24-2008 04:10 PM

I am not really into the "designer hand bag" thing besides Vera Bradley... I am obsessed about my Vera.....I could quote you the styles and designs back from a couple of years ago....I hate seeing the cheap knock offs! They look so dumb!

BetteDavisEyes 08-24-2008 04:16 PM

I love my COACH purse that was a graduation gift but so many times, I've had random people ask me if it was real. One lady didn't believe me when I said it was and demanded I show her the inside label that shows it is a real COACH.

Most of the time, I use all these cute ones I buy at Disneyland. I now have a Tinkerbell, Mickey Mouse, Pirate Princess, and Alice in Wonderland purse.
