Gay student outed

Principal’s outing of gay student roils Fla. town
Many in conservative Panhandle community wonder what man did wrong

PONCE DE LEON, Fla. - When a high school senior told her principal that students were taunting her for being a lesbian, he told her homosexuality is wrong, outed her to her parents and ordered her to stay away from children.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26316235/?GT1=43001

 People still think their personal opinions make the world go 'round.

WinniBug 08-21-2008 10:57 AM

UGH
That makes me so mad! Who is he to say that she's wrong for who she is?? Who is he to publicly out her?? And to suspend her friends for supporting her?
Oh, no! People who are authority figures like he is need to learn to respect people...just because he's principal doesn't mean he's the know-all and end all of what's what!

Kevin 08-21-2008 11:00 AM

Damn.

Sounds like a lawsuit.

DSTCHAOS 08-21-2008 11:00 AM

The worst part of it is that the town is like that. So they can't just ostracize him for his decision and fire him. The town agrees with him.

AOII_LB93 08-21-2008 11:01 AM

I hope that PFLAG is all over this one. This is such crap.

DaemonSeid 08-21-2008 11:06 AM

**looking for Jesse n' Al....**

LttleMsPrEp 08-21-2008 12:44 PM

Things like this piss me off. Just because Davis is the principal does not mean that he is entitled to out a student for being a lesbian and telling her to stay away from children?? IMHO if a principal or any other administrative figure in a school district isn't able to separate their religious beliefs with their administrative duties there is a much bigger issue other than Jane Doe being a lesbian... I'm happy the ACLU is on this hopefully PFLAG does the same

33girl 08-21-2008 12:48 PM

The thing that killed me was the idiot who works at Walmart (no comment there) accusing the mom of the one suspended student for "bankrupting the school district" by suing. Hello idiot, if the principal wouldn't have been such a closed-minded bigot, she wouldn't have been wearing anything to support "Jane Doe" in the first place.

Kevin 08-21-2008 01:08 PM

Any district of any size which doesn't have a preallocated litigation budget every year is just asking for trouble.

Tom Earp 08-21-2008 01:23 PM

It seems that this Principal took it upon himself to do something that he took to an extreem and shold be iehter fired or reassigned somehwere else.

Kevin, I feel you are correct, a law suit in the making.

What the heck does Jessie and Al have to do with this unless the student was black as that is the only thing they want to stick their noses in.

DSTCHAOS 08-21-2008 01:48 PM

Adding depth to the thread: The more you know, the more you grow.

FYI: Jackson sticks his nose in all things involving power-minority groups that he is concerned with. http://www.rainbowpush.org/about/ However, the treatment of homosexuals seems not to be one of those things unless the main issues are HIV education, health care, gender and/or race. In other words, usually something more than what's going on in this case.

Sharpton more exclusively deals with issues concerning racial and ethnic minorities.

The good thing about homosexuals as a power-minority group is that they aren't as voiceless as they once were when it comes to incidents such as this--still more room for advancement. And it doesn't hurt that these news stories tend to be about white homosexuals and their whiteness levels the playing field a bit more and gives them more voice and sympathy votes. The more silent battles of racial and ethnic minority homosexuals is a bit different and that's why there are groups like Rainbow PUSH and others to address that difference. :)

nittanyalum 08-21-2008 02:50 PM

There is so much wrong in that article it's hard to know where to start.

That ACLU lawyer in the picture looks kinda cute, tho'. :)

Are you drunk? No, really.

Nanners52674 08-21-2008 05:07 PM

If the whole town feels so strongly about having their children attend a school that has their conservative religious values then start a private school and send your kids there. But as long as your in a public school funded by public tax dollars and your an employee for the county, or state you have the play by the rules. Im so happy the ACLU got involved and got justice.

I went to a catholic high school and there were plenty of gay students but not once were they ever singled out or chastised by teachers or the administration.

I'll get off my soap box now

Scandia 08-21-2008 07:19 PM

I am furious about this. Regardless of what the principal's views were about homosexuality, he is NOT to condone the bullying of a student. And that is regardless of what the reasons for the bullying are.

yeah...reading the first sentence I am thinking 2 things
a. your keyboard has a bad stutter
b. you are on the sauce!

I vote for B
Step away from the sauce, dude. And before you call someone a racist, get a dictionary and look up the term
WTF does Obama have to do with this?

Did I say step away from the sauce???

That principal needs to have his ass handed to him on a platter and be sued for every dime he has

nittany-I am with you, the ACLU atty is a hottie :D

FlaGirl07 08-21-2008 11:06 PM

This was in our local paper a while back, since Ponce de Leon is about an hour away from my hometown. I've been there a few times (they have Vortex Springs) and it seriously is a backwoods/backwards town. Stuff like this happens all the time.

jojapeach 08-22-2008 01:10 AM

I gotta blog on this

Tom Earp pulled the race card and connected Obama to this. Really? The sad thing is someone on the planet - obviously a little high - is reading his posts in this thread and completely agrees with him.

I'm sad that Ponce de Leon is acting like it's 1908. I bet money that the principal really felt he was doing a public service for the rest of the school and town with his witch hunt. Disgusting.

I'm even more sad at this from the article:

Quote:

Griffin, who kicked Davis out of the principal's office but allowed him to continue teaching at the school, said high schoolers here aren't exposed to the same things as kids in Atlanta or Chicago.
Don't these kids have the world wide web that includes myspace, FB, and youtube? They may have limited face-to-face interaction with gay students and/or adults, but these kids are aware of what's going on in the world.:mad::mad:

Kudos for ACLU getting involved, and I also hope PFLAG will do the same.

Senusret I 08-22-2008 06:20 AM

I want you all to know that PFLAG is full of shit.

I interviewed there last year, made it to the second round. I was sooooooo glad they didn't pick me once I realized what they were all about.

Please expand.

Senusret I 08-22-2008 10:33 AM

PFLAG doesn't care about black people, black communities, or black cities.

It's ironically very Harper Valley PTA-ish.

The individual chapters do good work, but nationally, not so much.

socialite 08-22-2008 10:59 AM

This happened at my high school more or less as well

A kid was openly homosexual and a teacher called his parents and outed him, GET THIS; his parents pulled him from public school and put him in some kind of military school... true story.

^^^ I bet he doesn't even know what he was saying.

WWOD is hilarious.

a.e.B.O.T. 08-23-2008 06:24 PM

My fav. part of the article is when they say they are a peaceful community. No, there was no violence, etc, but I always assumed peace came with acceptance and tolerance... OH... and when they said that they are not like Miami or Minnesota where this is more of an issue... really? Minnesota? I know its a swing state, but really? Minnesota is the best state you can think of to represent the gay supporters out there?

LightBulb 08-24-2008 02:02 AM

Absolutely disgraceful.

Sadly, the related video on this article is about a similar case happening in Memphis. Sigh.
