Rep. Tubbs Jones Unconscious in Cleveland Hospital
Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones
EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, one of Hillary Clinton's biggest supporters during the primaries, remained unconscious Wednesday in a Cleveland area hospital after suffering an aneurysm while driving her car the day before.

Tubbs Jones' car veered off the side of the road Tuesday night. Police found her unconscious behind the wheel.

The congresswoman's condition has since been stabilized at a hospital in East Cleveland, spokeswoman Nicole Williams said.

But there was a report Wednesday that Tubbs Jones, in grave condition, may soon be taken off life support. Aides in the congresswoman's Ohio and Washington, D.C., offices could not confirm the report when contacted by FOXNews.com.

According to a police report, an officer was driving behind Tubbs Jones' car at about 9 p.m.ET and observed her weaving.

After a couple of turns, the officer turned on his lights to stop the congresswoman. When she pulled to the side, her car then started to roll across the lanes of oncoming traffic. The officer then pulled his cruiser in front of her car to block it from oncoming traffic, the report said.

When the officer walked up to her sedan, he noticed she was in "medical distress" and called for an ambulance.

The 58-year-old Tubbs Jones became the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress when she was elected in 1998. She is serving her fifth term in Congress.

Tubbs Jones is the chairwoman of the House Ethics Committee. That panel is currently probing the DUI arrest and potential abuse of taxpayer funds by Republican Rep. Vito Fossella.

Tubbs Jones is set to be a superdelegate at next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver. The congresswoman threw her support to Barack Obama in June after Clinton dropped out of the race.

At the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, she delivered the main address on the first night of the event.

This is so sad. At work today, we were all checking the updates. I met her several times at various fuctions and she is the epitome of class and poise. I very much admire her for all of her contributions to the community.

It has been all over the Cleveland news all day. They are reporting that she is in critical condition and it was an aneurysm in an inaccessible area of the brain.

Almost 10 years ago, my cousin suffered an aneuryism on the BART going home from work. She was in the hospital for a few weeks and doctors said there was nothing else they could do for her. By the grace of God, she made a miraculous recovery and has full use of her motor skills. I pray that your sister has the same results.

An aneuryism claimed the life of my dad's father when dad was away at college. I have always worried about this.

Very sad news. Stephanie passed away at 6:12.

Posting again. I sat down at lunch and nearly cried. The entries into the guestbook were so touching and not only by member of the community. There were posts from all over the United States and many were from Deltas.

I would like to quote from an article in today's Plain Dealer by columnist, Phillip Morris.

"I shared a stage with Tubbs Jones a few weeks ago, when she told a charming story about meeting Muhammad Ali. She was a law student at Case Western Reserve University in the early '70s, when Ali was invited to campus to speak. On her way to the speech, Tubbs Jones, a boxing fan, saw a "tall, handsome guy" walking near the school. She stopped and offered him a ride. The man accepted and, as he climbed into the car, she realized her new passenger was Ali.
Far from awed, she began lecturing the champ about walking in a strange city when plenty of transportation was available to a man of his stature.
The "champ" laughed at her precociousness.
She never changed.
Whether she was lecturing a fighter or fighting on behalf of a cause, you always knew exactly where she stood. She was Greater Cleveland's champion. "

She touched many lives and always was quick to brighten a room with her smile. Stephanie will be missed.

Sorors,

We lost our sister yesterday please lift up her family as she enters into Omega Omega. For those of us that went to Convention it seems unreal that she was just there with us only 3 weeks ago. Sisters, life is too short and not promised not live it with joy, peace and laughter. If you haven't told your family, friends, or sorors that you LOVE them...please do so. All of our days are numbered and only GOD knows when HE will call us home.

If I haven't told you lately...I LOVE YOU!!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Congresswoman Tubbs Jones when I interned in DC. She was very down-to-earth, laid-back, friendly, and committed to her congressional district. My condolences to her family, friends, Sorors, colleagues, and constituents.

Soror, you've just eloquently stated what's been on my mind & heart for these last 2 days. Especially the "unreal" portion. Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones saw us as pyramids earlier this year and was such a warm, funny, engaging and passionate Founder's Day speaker for our chapter celebration. The next time I was able to see her in person, I was beyond excited to hug and greet her in Orlando as Soror Stephanie. It just doesn't connect to look at the pictures from both occasions and know that she is gone.

And it's even more unbelievable to process that my Aunt (also a Soror) from Orlando was hospitalized throughout convention with the same condition - I learned that she had finally returned home unscathed at the same time that Soror Stephanie passed on Wednesday. I have to echo your post and urge all of us not to take life and the time we have on this earth for granted.

The City of Cleveland is waiting until next week for the Memorial Service because of the Democratic Convention. They are planning for loads of dignitaries to attend. She was scheduled to speak at the convention this coming week and was a super delegate.

What a remarkable lady. I was reading about some of her great contributions and only hope that I will leave a legacy of love like she did.

In the Cleveland Plain-Dealer...

As a former resident of the Cleveland area, I was reading the online Plain-Dealer, and was so excited to see the following article...

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008..._a_big_pa.html

It is so wonderful to see the late Rep. Tubbs Jones's fraternal commitment highlighted in the newspaper for all to read! I am sure that Delta Days at the Capitol will never be the same, and my sympathies to all Deltas on this loss.

On a side note, nearly all NPHC women I know are Deltas (former Orientation Team Big Sister, a former RA of mine, colleagues, etc.). A few are actually from Cleveland and active there. All are great testaments to your organization!

This past weekend has been filled with so many emotions while we reflected on the life of Stephenie Tubbs Jones in Cleveland. She accomplished so much, and discovering all of the things she did for many locally... things that I am still learning about. What makes her truly amazing is that she never did anything for the publicity, because much of what she was doing in and for our community was unknown to many. She helped people because it was truly from her heart.

The number of people that turned out in Cleveland to honor her life was truly incredible. The number of people that came together to march in the labor day parade left me speechless. The Deltas were representing, of course!

We will miss seeing Stephanie Tubbs Jones at our sorority meetings, in our community, and serving as a warrior in the political arena and world overall. She is such an inspiration....

Soror Marcia Fudge is running for Soror Tubbs Jones' Congressional seat

Sorors,

I just received an email saying that Past National President Marcia Fudge is running for Soror Tubbs Jones' seat.:D Soror Fudge was once Soror Tubbs Jones chief-of-staff.

************************************************** *******
Warrensville Heights Mayor To Run For Tubbs Jones' Seat

Marcia Fudge Announces Candidacy

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Warrensville Heights Mayor Marcia L. Fudge is throwing her hat into the ring to replace U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones in congress.

Tubbs Jones, a Democrat who was the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, died last month after suffering a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm.

Fudge released the following statement on Monday:

"On Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, our community joined together to celebrate the life of my dear friend Stephanie Tubbs Jones. It was the spirit of unity, sincere outpouring of love and the prayers of many that have led me to declare my candidacy for the seat vacated by Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones. I wish to continue her work and build on her legacy of kindness, good deeds, and zealous representation of all people of the 11th Congressional District of Ohio.

"It is my hope that the leadership of this community will develop a process of identifying a consensus candidate so that we may move forward together. It would be an honor and privilege to represent the 11th Congressional District of the State of Ohio."

The ballot replacement for Tubbs Jones will be selected by members of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party's executive committee who live in the 11th district.

Tubbs Jones' term expires at the end of December. A replacement likely will not be elected until November.
