NFL and College Football

Who has the best shot at winning the national title or the super bowl? What are your favorite teams?

I think one of the Florida teams has the best shot at winning the national title, or maybe Oregon. As for the NFL I think Tenessee and Tampa Bay to play in the super bowl with the titans winning.

I think its really too early to say with the NFL. There are a lot of good teams out there. I like the Redskins but I doubt that they will come very close to the playoffs. Even with Shottenheimer. I agree about Tampa. Thats a good possibility. I'd like to see Virginia Tech come close to the National Championship again. Unfortunately I see Bobby Bowdens team and Oregon making a good run at it. I think Florida State needs a loosing year for change.

Raiders in 2002!!! Seriously, the Raiders will go all the way this year. Unfortunately, Oregon will take it for the PAC-10. We suck right now. I also like FSU stepping back into championship cleats this year. They're hungry. And I love Bobby and hate Steve.

I agree that it's too early to tell which teams have a shot for going to the Super Bowl. The preseason isn't even over yet. My favorite team is Green Bay, so I'm hoping that they'll be able to do some spectacular this season. They've looked pretty good so far, so I'm hoping that they'll be able to keep it up in the regular season. I usually don't keep up on any other teams, but I might have to start watching NFL2night to see how things are going.

amycat412 08-27-2001 04:12 PM

My favorite is USC TROJAN FOOTBALL, of course. Our chances--eh-- we'll see. We've got the talent and a new coach, so....

Pro-wise, too soon to tell who is SuperBowl bound, though my favorite team is the San Diego Chargers.

:)

Steeltrap 08-27-2001 04:18 PM

Yes, I'm also a Chargers fan, but I think they're some years away, until Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson develop. Doug Flutie may be a feel-good story, but I think he's on his last legs.
So, as the NFL champion, I'm looking at Tennessee and Tampa Bay as strong contenders. I dislike the Ravens because of Ray Lewis. I like the Vikings but don't think they have a strong defense. They also can't help but be affected by Korey Stringer's death.
I'm also a USC Trojan alumna, but Pete Carroll as head coach is a puzzling hire. I'm not, however, ready to dismiss USC as "SCCC" like Jim Rome does.

amycat412 08-27-2001 04:35 PM

Steeltrap--
are you like me-- a Larry Smith fan? Seems to me we just haven't been the same since he left...

Fight on,
Amy

Steeltrap 08-27-2001 05:08 PM

Amy,
Smith did a good job with the team (three Rose Bowl appearances). When I was a student, Ted Tollner was the coach and I recall everybody getting huffy because we only got to one Rose Bowl.
Did you also hear that AD Mike Garrett snubbed Coach Robinson and didn't invite him to an upcoming 25-year reunion for the 1976 team? The LA Times ripped Garrett , said he basically was unfit to run a major college athletic program.

Fight on, Steeltrap.

amycat412 08-27-2001 05:44 PM

Yeah, I am not a huge fan of Garrett.
Does not surprise me he snubbed Robinson--rumor has it they were at each other's throats, esp towards the end of Robinison's most recent tenure.

Smith was great for us. Four Rose Bowls in four years. Undefeated until we played Notre Dame in the 88-89 school year.

But Robinson--UGH, he was trying to play the same kind of game at SC in the 90's that he did in the 70's--and Pac 10 football isn't that way anymore!!

And Hackett---oh don't get me started--but there I fault mostly Garrett, and the relationship between them. Garrett must control EVERYTHING in the football program.

Oh I hope Carroll and Garret get along or Carroll can stand up to him or something!!!!

Steeltrap 08-27-2001 07:24 PM

Carroll needs to stand up to Garrett and the administration should start paying attention...

newbie 08-27-2001 07:34 PM

I am rooting for FSU and USC :D. Haha, my sister, UCLA alumna, won't be too happy bout that! ;)

As for NFL-wise, i like the SF 49ers. Don't think they'll make it, but I'll still root for them...

ladybug1116 08-27-2001 10:56 PM

Go Noles!!!!!! Being from FSU of course I hope we go all the way to the national championship but I don't know.....We've already suffered some major injuries in preseason and had several key players graduate last year. It will be interesting to see what happens. I will probably get killed for my next comment but if we played in the SEC I wonder what would happen to our record....
I'm originally from Auburn, AL so of course I'm routing for my tigers :) I hope they can pull it together this year and make things interesting.

newbie 08-27-2001 11:10 PM

Ladybug, are you Pink27's roomie? If so, pls say hi to her for me! Thanks :D!

ladybug1116 08-27-2001 11:23 PM

I am indeed Pink27's roomie for the next week...then she moves back home :(

Still was pretty rude not to at least invite Robinson.

How could you not like the Ravens ? Even further, how could you not like them because of Ray Lewis  ? He is one of the best linebackers to play the game !! It makes me angry that people want to just write him off because of his personal problems, none of us are perfect yet we all seem to hold athletes to a higher standard then we hold ourselves...why is that  ?

Anyway, all of the doubters and haters will be eating crow again next year !! See ya in January !!

-from a true Ravens fan...

Steeltrap 08-28-2001 11:47 AM

Dear B'more fan, I'll give you that Ray Lewis is a gifted player, although I like my football with more offensive firepower. The Ravens are a good defensive team.
As for your other points, unfortunately, the society does see athletes as role models and holds them to a higher standard of conduct, expects nobility.
Because Lewis and other athletes are seen as role models, he was, IMO, obligated to conduct himself in a better fashion while the scenario of what happened at the Super Bowl was going on. Including showing some sense of contrition and empathy for two families who lost children. Period.

GO HAWKS! Yes, the 'mighty' Iowa Hawkeyes are coming off a 3-8 campaign, but this year is a rebound year, and i predict bowl game for them in '02 . . . yeah wishful thinking, but i'm a die-hard i guess.

NFL - how about the Eagles? Should be a good year for them, they've added some serious receivers for once and have a good defense. They could do some damage. I also like the saints (w/ Ricky Williams at 100%), and of course the Rams. In the AFC, the titans are always good but the best upgrade might have been swapping dilfer for grbac, although losing Jamal Lewis hurts the Ravens a lot, so those two should have an interesting chase, also I like the way Oakland plays, and Jerry Rice is the man.

Thrillhouse 08-28-2001 03:13 PM

Iowa will make a 6-5 bowl game, I have read in a few mags that they will be the biggest surprise this year. Michigan will win the big ten. They don't have to play Northwestern.

prospectiverushee 08-28-2001 07:59 PM

It's all about the SEC baby!!! :D

GEAUX Tigers! (LSU that is)

p.s Good Luck to Louisiana Tech as they start play in their new conference the WAC

Thrillhouse 09-22-2001 11:03 PM

Anyone see the Florida St game today? wow

(Speaking of this season, what happened in today's ND/MichSt game to that Mich player that had a seizure? Did they find out what was wrong with him?)

I also follow the Michigan Wolverines (Go Blue!). Gotta follow my fave hockey players alma mater lol.

The only thing I heard about that player is that he was okay. That was a decent game.

U B All Wrong

Kansas City Chiefs, but playing the Giants today! Emotional Game on both sides!

If I had my choice for College it would be the Pittsburg State U. Gorillas, but not in the big time!

So Go K-State Wildcats. We are in Kansas TOTO!
