UGA Recruitment Winds Down

I've been volunteering all week at my daughter's house (not my own this week - it's been her first rush as a sister, not a PNM) and have totally missed out on how things are going (the BIG picture). Am I missing the posts? I've followed a couple of stories, but want to hear some specifics....After what I conclude have been some leaner years, her house has had great events! Amazing quality of sisters, strong show of sisterhood and lots of talent! Looked like the PNMs were top notch! Gives me great hope for the future of the greek system!!!

Can anyone share any details?

Thanks!

A friend's daughter is a Georgia PNM. She has had full rounds and she is OOS. We're all looking forward to hearing her final destination.

Hey Soup!

I was in Athens today, too. The PNM's look beautiful! (the actives at my house looked pretty good as well. Hee!) From my vantage point, looks to be another successful rush but I agree that it has been strangely quiet on the UGA front this year. I hope we hear from some moms who can let us know. Anyone??

IHeartUGA 08-17-2008 10:13 PM

the crickets are chirping...

it has been very quiet this year! someone needs to tell us how it's going! SOON!

ugagreekgrad 08-17-2008 10:29 PM

Well...I have been chatting with an out of state PNM. Hoping a good sorority would help her with her UGA experience. They get their bids tomorrow. She met many girls who did not have a lot of choices. They were cut and are making tough decisions. My PNM has been fortunate and went to three good prefs. It seems as if a girls has to know someone to get invited back. My PNM had recs and an amazing resume but still overlooked by many. It seems to very competitive. Six out of her 20 group dropped out before prefs. Okay, that is a little of what I know.
Go dawgs

UGAMOMof4 08-17-2008 10:47 PM

Waiting for more info

I'm thinking that recruitment was particularly tough this year...don't know why, but am getting that feeling. My DD was cut by my house after third rounds. It was by far one of her top two from the very beginning, even without legacy affiliation - a very well regarded house at UGA and very competitive. It was disappointing to say the least plus she was only invited to one pref party today. We are on pins and needles waiting to hear from her gamma chi if she did not receive a bid. I think we should know within the next 30 minutes or so. I give my DD a lot of credit for sticking it out. She likes her pref house well enough and thinks she would be happy there. It's unfortunate that so many girls drop because they don't get xyz sorority. If all the great girls (who dropped out) stuck it out and completed the process, just think how strong every house would be! I don't think anyone would deny that UGA has many, many amazing young women!

SWTXBelle 08-17-2008 10:49 PM

Oh, UGAMom - here's hoping for good news for your daughter. Hope she finds her home - hang in there!

barnard1897 08-17-2008 10:50 PM

Hang in there, UGAMom. I hope it works out for the best for your daughter. This is such a hard process to go through as the PNM but I think that for the moms it is even tougher to have to watch it all play out from the sidelines.

AuburnMom08 08-17-2008 10:53 PM

Best of luck to your girl, UGAMom. I am crossing my fingers for her!

UGAMOMof4 08-17-2008 10:58 PM

Thanks! This has been quite the roller coaster ride. I was not prepared for how competitive this would be for her. She is from out of state--not adjoining--which I think makes it a little more difficult. There are so few connections, if any, for out of state girls. With a highly competitive recruitment like UGA, I believe you just need someone on the inside pulling for you every step of the way. From what I can remember from the process many, many years ago, there was always someone pulling for someone from their hometown, cousin, etc. All that means is when the tough decisions come around regarding cuts/quotas, there are so many great girls who slip through the cracks because no one knows them very well. It's all good. My DD is pretty amazing. She will be disappointed if she does not get a bid, but she knows that she needs to move on. She has a very positive attitude and no resentment toward any sorority. Isn't that awesome?

SWTXBelle 08-17-2008 11:02 PM

Yes it is - she'll do great, I have no doubt. Fingers crossed for great news, though!

UGAMOMof4 08-17-2008 11:06 PM

I would like to hear more stories and input regarding UGA rush. This is so fascinating to me! Anyone out there with news?

icelandelf 08-17-2008 11:06 PM

I hear those crickets chirping too. UGAMom, all will be okay. Can't wait to hear the news!

I miss UGADad. That was such an awesome story (of many) last year :)

GreekAlphaSoup 08-17-2008 11:14 PM

While we are passing time, I'll give UGAMoms a story of hope and happiness. My dd got released from my chapter last year and after a few days of encouragement by me, my former roommate and another pledge sister of mine, we convinced her to accept her bid and hang in there. She pledged and began, slowly, to ease into greek life. It was a touch-and-go process for a while, but we continued to show her the positive side. She moved into house this fall and within hours glowingly said, "I love my sisters!" Each day grew stronger and stronger and you could see the sisterhood among the entire group. I had the pleasure of working behind the scenes in the kitchen during events and when I'd see her briefly, she GLOWED! Hang in there, moms. Encourage your girls. If they aren't where they thought they'd be (or where YOU thought they'd be) remind them of the love of a sisterhood...the support system...the good times to come. That's why we're here, right????

UGAMOMof4 08-17-2008 11:19 PM

Well said. My DH, also Greek, and I were just talking about the same thing. We think she'll enjoy it very much and, assuming she gets a bid, she'll be in a place where the girls really wanted her.

FTW - yes, I wish more moms and pnms realized that! I need to go to bed, but now I'm dying to know about your daughter:rolleyes:

I know exactly how you feel, I had no idea it would be so cutthroat! I honestly thought that because my daughter is gorgeous that she would have no problem getting in anywhere. I have learned a lot for sure but with the Auburn recruitment one thing I noticed when looking over the list of new members (that irishpipes so kindly broke down for us) is that there were LOTS of out of state girls in every group. I also noticed that most girls who went thru pref rounds and hung in there got a bid. I haven't heard of anyone who didn't. One girl from here only had one party after the philanthrophy round and then she was cut from that one after the skit round I felt so bad for her but she got a snap bid from them after all!

Your daughter sounds like a great girl. When is UGA bid day?

GreekAlphaSoup 08-17-2008 11:29 PM

I think they are meeting for bids around 5:30 p.m. then they are meeting their new sisters around 7:00 -ish....Just what I think I heard today....

GreekAlphaSoup 08-17-2008 11:32 PM

I imagine if they are getting a sad call from their GC, it's coming about now. Snap bidding has begun.

SWTXBelle 08-17-2008 11:43 PM

So - does that mean no news now is good news for UAMomof4? Hope so!

UGAMOMof4 08-17-2008 11:46 PM

For me, with the info coming in by the minute, this is like the election results that we can expect this November! LOL!

SWTXBelle 08-17-2008 11:47 PM

I KNOW! It's nuts!

GreekAlphaSoup 08-17-2008 11:47 PM

I know I can't expect to go to bed anytime soon....DD is texting updates!

SWTXBelle 08-17-2008 11:49 PM

We need something like the maps they use in the elections that show by colour which candidate has won - so I guess a map of the campus with the houses in the groups' colours - hmmmmmmm. . .or "paper doll" cutouts of the pnms, to be coloured with the appropriate colours as the results come in.

GreekAlphaSoup 08-17-2008 11:51 PM

I'm pulling for the pink, blue and bronze right now!

SWTXBelle 08-17-2008 11:52 PM

I'll agree to pink, but gotta love my brown!

eta - and it's almost midnight now - surely the call would have come by now if it was to come .

eta - drat, drat, drat. I must go to sleep - but I'm hoping for really great news for you, UGAMom.

GreekAlphaSoup 08-17-2008 11:55 PM

That's what we're hoping for UGAMomof4! No news - good news?

Me too, obviously. I was just at the house now and we're all REALLY excited. and tired. it's really hard to imagine classes starting in a few hours.

shadden 08-18-2008 06:36 AM

uga rush

I am also anxious to hear results - my daughter's house has had a great rush, but I am sad because so many of her friends going through have been cut out early in the process - not what I have been used to in years past. The gamma chi I talked to yesterday said drops and cuts were high this year. Hope they aren't all working for the same group of girls

tangelo212 08-18-2008 07:50 AM

Come back! I want to hear about UGA news and your daughters! (You ugly jawja ;) Sorry couldn't resist, but I am applying there for grad haha)

SWTXBelle--good thing you didn't stay up, you would have had to pull an all nighter!

Me too! I'm on pins and needles waiting to hear something about the results. My chapter has been working so hard the last few years and the work is really starting to pay off( See: last year!). It stinks being 8 hours from Athens so I'm having to rely on word of mouth to hear anything!!

:) If you feel so inclined, I'd love a PM to get some info on my chapter! :p

Edit: Here's an article from today's Red and Black, but it isn't very informational....apparently there was a slight rise in PNMs registered this year.

Thanks for the Rude and Bleak link....(sorry, that's our old nickname from back in the glory days of Herschel Walker & NCAA championships...."Speed dating"....great analogy. What a good looking house in the background of that picture.....see that room on the upstairs left....that was me and axoalum....good times!

This is not just happening to out of state girls. In the past few years, the girls from our HS have had the same experiences, although last year was better than the year before when only 4 of 12 received a bid. The HOPE scholarship and the rampant growth of metro Atlanta has really had an effect on the sororities at UGA, IMO. There are now huge blocks of girls from the suburban Atlanta high schools who back girls from their high schools, and so on and so on until there's no room for anybody else.

For the first time in five years, I don't know a single girl going through recruitment at Georgia, Alabama or Auburn.

SWTXBelle 08-18-2008 09:42 AM

Yep, went to bed thinking "This is silly. I'll just wait for the news tomorrow morning." -

I lived in that house for a couple of years, too. About rush, I heard a couple of sororities cut half after round one. That is strong. My pnm source is from out of state, too. And, has seen alot of girls cut. It seems a girl must have an inside contact/friend in order to be noticed. Best of luck.

Aww, Soup!
I was thinking the same thing.:)

axoalum 08-18-2008 09:59 AM

UGAMom, Where are you? Is no news good news? I am so nervous I am wringing my hands. Let us know soon!

UGAALUM 08-18-2008 10:17 AM

Does anyone know quota at UGA?

BBelleADPi 08-18-2008 12:16 PM

I posted about my rec girl this year at UGA ( I only had one this year, strange) in the SEC thread, but I'll post here as well, and give a little more information, now that voting is over.

This girl is a direct legacy to:

Delta Zeta (grandmother)
Delta Delta Delta (mother, UGA)
Zeta Tau Alpha (sister)

She had an amazing rush. I listed yesterday that she was able to pref at three sororities, but didn't list them. I just said instead that they are all awesome, and she can't go wrong at any of them.

They are:

Zeta Tau Alpha
Alpha Chi Omega
Gamma Phi Beta

The girls from this area, for the last five years or so, have ended up in these three sororities as well as Pi Beta Phi and Delta Gamma. These are all just fabulous chapters at Georgia, and I hope we continue the home town advantage for awhile, in case my youngest daughter ends up going to UGA!:D

By the way, it's interesting that there are some UGA Alpha Chi Omegas posting in this thread, because I was going to post that I do love the pictures that UGA AXO always take of their new members. They take some photos where the girls are looking out of the house windows (I assume it's the living room) and on the staircase. They are always such beautiful girls, and very classy.

UGAMom: I do hope you'll have some wonderful news to report about your daughter.

Good Luck to all.

I'm following a couple of girls from my alma mater -- fingers crossed!
