Diamonds and Pearls

I have read several boards with suggestions to wear signature pieces of jewelry, and even without rush I have a signature piece of jewelry -- my string of pearls. No matter how dressy or casual my outfit, I am ALWAYS wearing my pearls. If I remember right, pearls are one of the NPC sororities official symbols/jewelry. If I wear my pearls everyday is this going to offend the other sororities?

Doubtful. There are numerous organizations that share the same jewel.

If it's something that you wear every day, then wear it.

I can't speak for the sororities that don't have the pearl as their jewel, but I would assume that it wouldn't go that far that they'd be offended. As long as you're not calling too much attention to your necklace, you should be okay.

i don't think it would occur to me if a pnm came through wearing a certain jewel that she was trying to convey attention to another house. however, if a pnm came through wearing an angel, anchor, moon, fleur de lis, or some other identifiable charm, of course i would take notice. jewels are pretty generic in the sense that anyone can wear them and not realize the significance.

The pearl isn't one of my sorority's jewels, and in fact I think another sorority on my campus did claim them, but I wouldn't have noticed that as a bad thing.

ComradesTrue 08-12-2008 10:59 PM

Agreed.

The pearl is not a symbol for my organization either, and I pretty much wore them throughout recruitment when I was an active.

I never gave a second thought to the PNMs that would wear them.

Colors and more unique symbols are a different story though. I will never forget the double Chi-O legacy who submitted her rush photo wearing a harvest and straw colored dress. Geez.

Pearls are classic. Wear them with pride, and if anyone comments, explain that you wear them daily. If you do so for a reason (you got them for a special occasion, for example), don't be afraid to mention it.

As one of the other ladies said, it would be entirely different if you wore a more individualized symbol.

Good luck!

Pearls are kind of standard, I think.

violetpretty 08-13-2008 12:25 AM

Pearls are the official jewel of:

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Sigma Alpha (plus ruby)
Alpha Sigma Tau
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Phi Epsilon
Kappa Delta (plus diamond and emerald)
Sigma Kappa
Sigma Sigma Sigma
Theta Phi Alpha (plus sapphire)

Pearls are hardly unique to one NPC group.

irishpipes 08-13-2008 12:36 AM

AOII uses them too. Ruby is the official, but we use pearls on our badge so we claim them unofficially.

FlaGirl07 08-13-2008 12:37 AM

can't everyone put pearls on their badge?

Pearls are fine! Remember that old saying, you're never really dressed without your pearls!

Just an aside: One of my daughter's friends always wears a necklace with an anchor on it. She is a high school senior and definitely NOT a legacy to any sorority. (Her mother was a hippie..not sorority there). My daughter was given a necklace with a sliver of a moon on it (it was a giveaway from Sienna Miller's line) and when I was a bridesmaid (many years ago) I was given a gold charm of an angel!!!!! (you guessed it...my daughter wears it too). My daughter goes through rush next fall. I guess she'll have to look up all symbols.

Delta Delta Delta

"The pearl is the jewel of Tri Delta. It was chosen to symbolize the new member because it is the one jewel that grows, developing from a tiny grain of sand into a thing of great value and beauty."

Wow. A few years ago, the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation campaign leading up to the Centennial Convention included a video that included the following:

"A single grain of sand...becomes a Pearl of great worth."

DolphinChicaDDD 08-13-2008 04:41 AM

Wear the pearls if it makes you comfortable and you enjoy wearing them. Just don't go around saying, "I wear pearls because I know its your symbol and I love EVERYTHING about XZY" or something like that.

The official jewel of Delta Zeta is the diamond, but we've also got pearls in our badge.

Katmandu 08-13-2008 09:13 AM

If a PNM's signature piece is, let's say, an emerald encrusted nautilus shell brooch pierced with a gold dagger, or a charm bracelet that alternates green and pink turtles with golden lamps, then it might be a little sketchy.

A strand of pearls is always acceptable. Good luck with recruitment!

atomicflowers 08-13-2008 03:30 PM

The pearl isn't my sorority's official jewel but a lot of our girls (including myself) love to wear pearls! I think pearls are classy and if it's something that you wear everyday then go for it!

Scarlet 08-13-2008 05:46 PM

I think you'll see a bunch of other PNMs wearing pearls as well--a strand of pearls is such a classic choice. :)

Buttonz 08-13-2008 06:20 PM

SDT has pearls on our badge as well :)

co-sign. Actives are keenly aware of symbols and not so worked up about jewels.
