TSteven 08-11-2008 03:40 PM

To each her/his own.

In the grand scheme of things, I would think not. irishpipes does a bang up job with that thread and should be applauded for doing so. Having said that, as with years past, some folk might prefer a thread that simply discusses SEC recruitment. I would venture to guess that those who want to participate in this thread will do so. Those who do not, will not.

irishpipes 08-11-2008 03:46 PM

I read your thread every year, TS. We're not competing. I'm a mass merchandiser and you're a specialty store.

Elephant Walk 08-11-2008 04:26 PM

Good thread.

Arkansas' guys rush starts September 16th through the 20th

Yes, I know it's girls rush forum, but still.

Oh. Come. On. As far as the retail analogy goes, you're both just different displays / boutiques in Bergdorf's.

KSUViolet06 08-12-2008 12:23 PM

Looks like Bama, Auburn, Miss State, and UGA have all started as of today. Best of luck to all the PNMs/chapters at those schools. Recruitment season is underway.

AuburnMom08 08-12-2008 12:35 PM

Got a good drizzling rain going on in Tuscaloosa and Auburn. It's Philanthropy day at Auburn so the girls are in shorts and rush week t-shirts, at least. My daughter has already put her hair up. Hopefully it will clear off sometime today or by tomorrow at least.

AuburnMom08 08-12-2008 12:36 PM

PS - why is there a separate thread for SEC recruitment?

The SEC is kind of its own community. So, SEC followers may want to engage in discussion or read results without messing with 6 pages of data on non-SEC schools. I think TS's SEC thread usually has a lot more discussion than my big thread does, which is more data-oriented.

KSUViolet06 08-12-2008 12:41 PM

There are alot of SEC posters on the boards who are specifically interested in what's going on there.

:p You got that right. Thanks for the info.

baci 08-12-2008 12:53 PM

Go SEC!

Lamplighter 08-12-2008 01:03 PM

Right now, I'm keeping up with PNM's at 3 different SEC schools, all having recruitment right now. One is my daughter. I love that this thread exists. Please share what you know, although there may not be a lot to post until tomorrow, for a couple of the schools I am watching.

UGA has PNM Orientation today, but recruitment doesn't actually start until tomorrow.

Tex-A-Bama 08-12-2008 01:21 PM

I am a ZTA mom and an Alpha Phi Alumnae. My daughter was raised in an A-phi lodge because I was chapter advisor for a couple of years. She LOVES ZETA but because of my affiliation wishes for them to be successful at the U of A. She has asked me to do a rec for a sophomore who is not doing formal rush and is just learning of the Alpha Phi colonizing. The house is on sorority row. It is on the corner accross from Tutwiler and the stadium. I was there a couple of weeks ago and they were doing repairs and painting. here is a link should you know of a good canidate.

To add what others have already said...that's just how it's always been.

Amen to that! Thanks for catering to us SEC folks. :)

UGAalum94 08-12-2008 06:26 PM

And it's probably worth mentioning that the SEC is generally pretty self absorbed in regard to almost everything.

A lightning strike knocked out our router at home and it took a while to figure out exactly what the problem was (at one point I had to actually plug in a cable for internet like I traveled back in time), and as if my internet related suffering at home weren't enough, my employer blocks GreekChat. Can you imagine? It's like they want me working for them the whole day or something now that we're back from vacation.

Thanks for noticing my absence. What did I miss? I heard some thumping of helicopter blades, but everything seems pretty normal. The moms that I see posting seem healthy, interested but not oddly controlling.

TSteven 08-13-2008 08:44 PM

Currently, 960 women are registered for recruitment at Kentucky. 960 PNMs / 12 chapters = 80 quota

Thanks _Lisa_ for the update. And GO BIG BLUE!

axoalum 08-13-2008 09:28 PM

Okay...as an SEC girl, I follow this thread every year. This year, however, I have a daughter at a smaller school-West Georgia. Does anyone know anything about how rush goes over there? I am used to the nail biters of UGA and Auburn but am a complete fish out of water with the seemingly laid back rush that will start in two weeks at UWG. Any help out there?

irishpipes 08-13-2008 09:53 PM

I think there are a couple of Alpha Gams who post regularly who are advisors or otherwise involved at West Georgia. Can't think of who just now. Anyone?

DoctorD 08-13-2008 10:04 PM

AGDLynn - PM her :) - she can give you some info!

Lightning Bug! 08-14-2008 01:47 PM

Where are the UGA threads? Am I missing them somehow? Or is no one writing them?

Maybe the PNMs and moms are taking a page out of the Discretion Book and waiting until after recruitment's done instead of posting a live story.

Elephant Walk 08-14-2008 02:08 PM

Arkansas' late to the party.

Oh well, it's coming up soon enough.

Thank you DoctorD. I will get in touch with her so I won't be such a know nothing when rush starts.

axoalum 08-14-2008 03:00 PM

Good luck to all of the UGA moms and daughters! My source in Athens says everything is going well so far. Keep us updated from your end!

No advice but I'm jealous! How nice it would be to have my girl going thru a small school rush right about now. :)

Good luck to your girl!

Auburn Mom: Mine's going thru what I thought would be a "smaller" school rush. Trust me..it's not that different LOL! We figured out that if you go by the number of PNM's, number of houses, it's almost identical to Alabama's figures, just on a smaller scale. Still the same anxious feelings, the waiting on the phone calls etc... I almost long for the days when there was just a land line, no voice mail and once a week phone calls :) My parents didn't have a clue what was going on with me during rush. In fact I don't think I called them until the day after squeal day, come to think of it.

AuburnMom08 08-14-2008 04:37 PM

Oh I'm sure you're just as nervous. I shouldn't have assumed! This week has been so nerve wracking, I'm glad it's almost over! Good luck to your girl!

Good luck to the UGA girls. My sister lives in Athens and I absolutely love that town. I have wished a million times I had gone to college there.

AXOMom: Lamplighter is absolutely correct, in both the actual process and in a mom's feelings!! And that's how its its at West Ga.-though it's a smaller school, it is still in the South, sundresses and heels will be worn, and girls are competing for the same slots. What I do think is great about West Ga. is that the sororities all "mix" well during the school year. So if your daughter and her friends end up going different ways, they will still enjoy socializing around campus. I do hope she'll have a successful rush. Let us know how it goes!

AXiDTrish 08-14-2008 04:59 PM

West Georgia

I'm a UWG alumna and "product" of their Greek system. I would not classify recruitment as uber competitive per se, but it can be a heart breaker if your daughter goes in wanted to be an ABC or an XYZ. A lot of the local girls think they know where they are going the day they get there, but it doesn't tend to work like that. Rec's are good to have, but they aren't a potential deal breaker like at other southern universities.

Unlike 10 years ago when 1 or 2 groups stood out for various reasons, the chapters are pretty similar now and there isn't a "bad" group in the bunch. I am still involved as an alumna and the girls out there are really top notch and getting more successful each year in every chapter.

Best part.....NEW HOUSES next year! It is going to be a very exciting year for the campus! You have good sources of information on here. My history with the campus as an alumna and past advisor. AGDLynn is a good source of information as a past advisor and BBelleADPi who's daughter is in a UWG sorority currently.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much for the info everyone! I feel like my girl has a healthy respect for the process. I am still active with my chapter @ UGA (I'll be helping at the house for prefs on Sunday) and her sister was at AU -not my sorority-so she knows to keep and open mind and not to zero in on one or two groups of girls. I suppose my source of anxiety is just the unknown. I am used to the hard hitting rush before classes begin and not the delayed rush-even though they do have a few events next week. By the way...what are those all about anyway? Is it to introduce everyone? Do the sororities use the opportunity to sort of "pre-select" ?

A Southern chapter pre-selecting? Unheard of. ;)
