Auburn Recruitment Fall '08
Has anyone heard how many girls are signed up for recruitment at Auburn? With Alabama having record numbers, I was wondering if other SEC schools also are having record numbers. I hope we find someone with a recruitment story for Auburn this time around. (Anonymous of course.) Recruitment starts Sunday.

UGA numbers
I have heard there are over 1300 going through recruitment at UGA - starts on the 13th.
|
i think the number is 1206 right now or something close to that, and pre rush just started tonight for all the sororities!
|
Auburn Recruitment
I would also love to know how many pnms are going through at Auburn this week. My neighbor's daughter is packing to leave home tomorrow for Auburn. They are having a little going away party tonight and I am going to go over to give her some encouragement. She is a legacy to one sorority but the family says they have no illusions that that will help, and she is open minded about all of them. IF I have any information during the week, I will try to post, but it will be through her mom's worried perspective, ha!

good luck to your neighbor!

Looks like it's about time to start our annual SEC recruitment thread! Isn't that usually TSteven's job?

Change iin location
I wonder if the change in location for the optional meeting is because of the size of the recruitment pool.
|
Meeting Moved
It depends on which room Panhellenic is using in Foy. The Act is hold more people but Foy is a more central location on campus. Most big events were in the Act, like Greek Sing, Big Man on Campus, etc. Since it is an optional meeting, they may have wanted a more intimate setting and something closer to the Panhellenic office. I guess I'm trying to say I'm not sure why they moved it but Foy would be smaller than the Act.

My daughter is going through recruitment this year at Auburn. She has 15 in her group, and there are 80 groups. I'd guess, based on that, that there's approximately 1200 going through FR this fall.
|
Just heard from daughter. They went to 10 parties today; six tomorrow. Had a good day overall. Biggest complaint was her aching feet.
|
AUMom - Good luck to your daughter! Please let us know how things are going for her. The Auburn Greek system is very strong and there are so many good chapters to choose from.
|
Good luck to everyone going through recruitment at Auburn (and everywhere else of course! :D)

Looks like the computer broke today and made it another long day for the girls. Couldn't they at least let them eat?

As if the process weren't stressful enough on all concerned! Hang in there girls!!!

Where are all the Auburn pnm Mom's? Usually we have a boatload of them. I wonder how everyone is doing this week? Looks like thunderstorms are heading into Alabama today.

My daughter is rushing at AU this week as well. She texted me a little while ago and told me she only got invited back to 4 parties. Her roommate only got invited back to 6. They are sophmore transfer students but very smart, well spoken, sweet, classy, well dressed and pretty girls. I could tell she was disappointed and now I'm wishing she hadn't rushed at all. Be honest with me, with only 4 invites going in to the philanthropy round, what kind of chance does she have to get a bid? When are the next cuts made?
|
^ cuts are made every round. I could be wrong, but I don't think an invite to only 4 parties = impending doom. There's a possibility that all or some of those houses will invite her to the next rounds.

Hang in there. Unfortunately no one here can tell you about her "chances." As an FYI- Kappa Alpha Theta will be colonizing at Auburn in the spring, and new colonies are always looking for upperclassmen to balance out a freshman class. Not to say that there are any guarantees with anything, but at least know there is another option to pursue if your daughter does not find what she is looking for this week. |
I feel like one of those weird crazy pageant moms for even asking but I just want to get an idea of what to expect so I can be prepared for what comes next and know how to best talk to her and give her realistic support. I know every mom says this but she is a really sweet girl, she doesn't think she's a big deal and she's not one of those who go in thinking they're too good for certain GLO's.

Their sophomore status probably did hurt them a bit, but they still have several chapters to choose from - and this way they can focus on what they like about those chapters without getting their heads turned at a group where they might not have had as good of a chance. |
"Sasha", my neighbor, texted her mom this morning that she had 14 invitations back this morning. We are breathing easier for about 24 hours! Obviously Sasha is not her name---this was my favorite cat!
From my own college days at a large university, I know that the first days of recruitment can be a roll of the dice as to some of the pnms. If you are not identified from your recs and record as a pnm of great interest, you fall into the "let's take a look and see how it shakes out with the numbers" category. I think that upperclassmen in particular have a burden. They have been in college for at least a year, and their record there is examined. If their participation on campus is not really good, that is a mark against them, and the grades have to be stellar. They not only have to stand out in the crop of pnms going through, they have to compare favorably with the upperclassmen who are already members--and they are the ones deciding! We pledged only one or two sophomores a year. This is not to say that an upperclassman should not go through recruitment, but it is to say that they must be very very realistic as to their grades and record on campus. |

SoChiO...there were only 12 possible invitations today. No way she had 14. Straight from the panhellenic website: Tuesday, August 12 During this round, each PNM visits up to 12 chapters. There are in 14 party times, so each PNM will sit out at least two party times.

There are 16 chapters at Auburn. It is possible (though rare) to be invited back to all 16 chapters after Ice Water Teas, for Philanthropy. A PNM may only attend 12 parties over the course of two days for Philanthropy. If a PNM is invited back to 13 or more chapters, than the PNM will need to decline one or more invitations until their list is at 12 chapters. |
Ohhh ok. Gotcha. :)
|
Yes, absolutely, this is what happened. Sasha was invited back to 14 of the 16, and she will attend twelve. Good luck to Sasha and to all the pnms---and a lot of philanthropies will gain from the next two days.

To all the worried mommies in the thread:
I think it's worth pointing out that while it's great to have a full schedule of invites, not everyone is going to have that. If your daughter happens to get less than the max number of invites everyday, try not to panic too much, because in the end, she can only get one bid (no matter how full of a schedule she has everyday). :) In my opinion, this is something worth mentioning to your daughters, should any of them be upset by their invite list at some point. |

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Since she first texted me that she only got 4 invites I have spoke to her and she seems fine. It helps that her roommates, who are also sophomore transfers, only got 6 invites each - both girls had better grades than my daughter and one of the girls is a direct legacy to a former chapter president. She is a competitor and has never really lost or didn't get anything so this rejection is new to her. But when we talked she told me that one of the legacies who was an officer and who wrote a rec for her had called her and told her she only got 3 invites back after the first round so that really made her feel better. She also named over all her independent friends at AU and said that everything happens for a reason so she'll just go with what comes. Since my initial post I have browsed around this site and read a LOT of good information. AChiOhSnap if you're reading this you are great lol. This is really a great site and I wish I had found it sooner. :)

Auburn update
Just heard from my daughter who's going through recruitment at Auburn. She's got a full shedule, although she did get dropped from one sorority after the first round. She's been to three philanthropy parties this morning and enjoyed them all. She's going to five this afternoon (after a two hour break for lunch). Due to rain and humidity this morning, she's running back to her apartment to straighten her hair again. LOL Overall, it's been a good week so far. We didn't know what to expect since she's first in family to go through recruitment -- no legacy status. :)

Good luck to your daughter. As everyone else has said, it only takes one group. Tell her to keep her head up. Sounds like she's a great girl.
|
Ha! My daughter did the same thing - went home to eat and refix her hair. I'm in the same boat, we have no legacies in our family either although I do have a great family friend who told me what rush was like 40 years ago when she rushed at Alabama. It sounded way more dramatic than what my daughter has done so far - she called bid day "the squealer" and said my daughter would stay home all day on bid day and hope she didn't get "the dreaded knock" which would mean that someone (or everyone) in her room was about to get cut from all sororities. lol we found out that now they do it by phone call so at least we won't be sitting around her apartment all day waiting.
She just ran into a girl she met at her job back home a few weeks before she moved and that girl was stressing about rush way back then. She is a freshman with 12 legacies in her immediate family from a certain sorority and they cut her. My daughter said she was devastated. Poor girl. I'm glad it's not THAT big of a deal for us. I have vaguely heard about how competitive southern sororities were but I really had no idea. SO many girls are rushing this fall - you all should have seen that line waiting to go into the meeting Saturday night. There were 1000 easily, most of them looked like models. |
Good luck to all the girls this week.
AuburnMom, don't worry too much about your daughter. Like others have said - it only takes one bid. I rushed as a sophomore and only had three invites after IWTs but I got a bid to my sorority and couldn't have been happier. |
AuburnMom08
Wow, that's crazy that that girl got cut with so many legacies. Just shows that you never know. I believe I heard there were a little over 1200 PRMs this week at Auburn. At Alabama, they've got over 1600 this week, and several of my daughter's friends are going through rush there. I cannot even imagine that kind of competition. k
My daughter's PiChi group had several sophomores in it and a majority of girls were from out of state. She said that a lot of girls in her group had heavy cuts this morning. |
Thanks ((PinkRose))
I can't remember if I've told you (trying to stealth post while working - ha!) but good luck to your daughter, AUMom. |

Much good luck to your daughter! Being an upperclassman and getting 4 invites is just fine! Even if she doesn't get a bid in the end, remember that only part of the Auburn's student body is Greek...I think it's around 25%. That means 75% AREN'T Greek. ;) |
