Princeton Review - Greek Life & Party Rankings
The Princeton Review just released their rankings of Colleges and Universitie. Included in the "Parties" category are the top 20 party schools and the top 20 "major fraternity and sorority scene." There are a variety of categories (acdemics, quality of life, etc.). The rankings are based on surveys of current students. For more information go to:

As arbitrary as these sound, it's probably more accurate than those horrid USNews rankings, which rank schools based on endowment and whatnot.
I think it's intriguing that the majority of schools on both of the posted lists are Southern Schools. For the most part, these are also the same schools listed under "Their Students Almost Never Study"--and none of these were listed under "The Toughest to Get into". |
For major Greek Scene I am very surprised the University of Illinois isn't listed - they have a huge greek population.
|
Eeekkk! We're down to number 20!! Well, people are going to be b*tching about THAT in september! Administration will love it though. Will someone PLEASE explain how UC Santa Cruz is number 3?!?! Being a california native, who goes to a UC and knows people at UCSC, I just don't get it!!
|
Are they talking fraternity/sorority scene as in "we have 28 fraternities and 24 sororities" or is it the number of students who are Greek?
I go to a small (799) college in West -by- Gawd- Virginia where the Greek population is 80%. We only have 4 sororities and 6 fraternities though. I *love* reading these reviews! Thanks for posting it! ;) |
Moxie,
I think it is kinda funny how you just said how many fraternities and sororities Miami University had, and you probably just threw out some random numbers. Actually, I think we have 27 now, so you were very close. |
Off the subject a little bit- Being from Cincinnati and having a bit of a rivalry with Miami Ohio, I thought it was sooo funny that Miami is the number one most borring school, prof-wise. LOL :D

CU-Boulder is #12 for greek scene?!?
I think it's odd that barely 12% of the student population involved with a fairly vocal anti-greek population and NO support from administration puts us up that high. Sometimes I think these rankings are based on years of reputation rather than the actual present reality. |
My guess is they rate the greek scene part just be the general greek presence on campus? Penn State has the largest greek system in the country, but they're not #1, so it can't be by pure numbers.
|
Wow, I always thought that Univ of Michigan and MSU were always on the big party list. Have they cracked down or something?
|
I don't know, it seems like these rankings aren't really accurate - students themselves go to the review site and vote...but i mean i'm sure the voting gets screwed up somehow, being not scientific or whatnot.
Interesting that UCSC is number 3 on the party list. Living in the Bay area and having numerous of my friends who go there, I have never heard that UCSC is a party school. Instead, I heard it's totally laid-back and has a chill-atmosphere...definitely not what I would envision as a party school?? |
well lookie there....LSU made onto both lists....for another year in a row.....again. lol
|
As a recent UM alum, I would just like to ask....how the heck did we get #5 for Top Fraternity and Sorority Scene? I mean I love our system but only 18% of the campus makes it up and thats kinda of small for having 15 sororities and 31 fraternities. Plus UM is about as anti-greek as it can get. However, we it comes down to it we greeks do make ourselves and causes known on campus, so i guess that helps.
As far as UM being a party school...it really isnt. I thought it would be huge when I arrived but it wasnt and people said it had been that way for awhile. So im not a bit surprised we arent on the list for that. |
Heidi,
How funny :) Kevin Off the subject a little bit- Being from Cincinnati and having a bit of a rivalry with Miami Ohio, I thought it was sooo funny that Miami is the number one most borring school, prof-wise. LOL :D Heidi [/QUOTE] |

Amazing isn't it? :) Hey, I added you to my buddy list. Can't wait to hear all about things that are going on at LSU |

Oh yeah...you know that $3million home on Highland road? Saban bought it! Hugs again! |
These rankings for major Greek scene were based on the % of students who are involved in fraternities and sororities. Some schools not listed may have a high number of chapters represented, but the actual % of the student body involved in Greek life is not that high (since they are huge schools). I am a student at one of the schools listed, and yes, the Greek scene totally dominates campus social life.

Okay, I had family go there, and I can't figure it out. It's very mellow, very PC, and when I was in high school, and back visiting while in college, their parties were wack. Maybe they've laced the X up on the hill, but SC is still a lil mellow college town, and not hype. |
Hello....
University of Wisconsin Madison down to #9 on the party list...I do not think so!! Honestly, we live in Wisconsin...there is nothing to do here other then drink beer and watch one of our sports teams. Seriously, it gets so cold hear in the winter, that the only way to keep warm is to go out to the bars!! We have literally 50 bars within a 3 mile range...seriously, this needs to be contested!! |
You realize that his whole thing is bogus, right?
First of all, Princeton Review has absolutely nothing to do with Princeton University. Most people think it does. Second, as I understand it, these "ratings" are basically a compilation of comments from people who attend those schools and fill out a questionaire. It's kinda like some of the All Star Games. New York and LA often have the most players -- because more people there vote for them. It's not demographic like that, but if more people at Podunk University say it's a great party school, but the people at Ignorance Is Bliss College (which is a real party school) don't bother writing in -- well, you can see what happens. Everyone wants to go to a Podunk Party and are ignorant of Bliss. My own Alma Mater, Ohio University, dropped off the party school list this year after being number 7 or something like that last year. Did everyone there suddenly get boring? It is, in fact, a party school. Some guy on the University of Nebraska campus who was wearing an Ohio U tee shirt told me that just last week. Unsolicited. Ohio showed up on the best Greek schools, though. I think only about 8-10% of the student body is Greek, so how does that figure? |
it's kind of sad that some of the lesser known schools such as cleveland state university where I attend doesn't get the props it deserved. We may have a small greek system, but it's never a dull moment when it comes to us partying. we may not have all the advantages that the major schools have, but we can hold our own.

LOL, I knew it had to be an old list because Pike4Life, who lives here in this town, hasn't been on GC in a zillion years.

Top 6 now ( according to princeton review)
1.Birmingham- Southern College 2.Wofford College 3.Bucknell University 4.Translyvania University 5. University of Mississippi 6. Pennslyvania State University- University Park |
:eek:Oh, you are kidding me. Little Birmingham Southern? Nope, I'll put Auburn and Bama's Greeks before them any day party-wise.
|
What's not weird is that both lists have a Kentucky school (first list, Centre College and second list, Transylvania University). When I was at UK, I was told that UK had been ranked the #1 party school in the US at some point in the 1950's. Then again, when I was at UK, Centre was just getting sororities. Fraternities have always been strong there.
As for the University of Wisconsin, sure, it's really cold and there is not much else to do but drink/party-or study. I keep track of Madison because two of my three brothers now live around Madison and I'm there a few times a year. But being from the north (Chicago) and having gone to college in the south, I learned firsthand that southerners can party in ways that northerners would not even think of. :) |
Where is WVU? There is no way these statistics are accurate in anyway, you can't go from number one party school to not being on the list at all.
