Mamma mia, the movie
I couldn't find a thread on this, but I went and saw it wednesday afternoon. I have to say Amanda Seyfried was great...she's a great singer! I've never seen the musical, but I'm up on my ABBA music so it was fun. Meryl Streep did pretty well, she got better as the film went on.
I could have done without Pierce Brosnan singing though, he really wasn't that good. Colin Firth was alright though. Anyone else see this? |
I saw it last weekend. I enjoyed the movie and was impressed with how much fun it appeared the actors were having while singing and dancing. I can agree about Pierce Brosnan as well. I have seen the musical version twice and really enjoyed that.
|
Everyone in the theatre laughed when Pierce Brosnan sang, I felt sort of bad for him. He wasn't THAT bad I thought.
I totally missed the gay thing with Colin Firth until the very end. |
I have seen the musical many times, including in New York on Broadway and in London. I love the live show and have been somewhat leery of going to the movie because it would depress me to see it done poorly.
So, should I see it? Y'all's descriptions sound pretty good. Were they laughing "with" Pierce Brosnon or "at" him? |
I loved it-but I have never seen it in live. Pierce Brosnan doesn't exactly have the best of voices, but I didn't really think it took away from the movie. In a way, I thought it added to it. I agree that Meryl Streep seemed to warm up. I was weary after the jeep scene, but it did get much better.

I saw it on opening night.
I was really surprised by Amanda Seyfried. I wondered how well she could sing, but I thought she was rather good. The same thing went for Meryl Streep -- 'The Winner Takes It All' was very touching and I felt her singing was pretty decent. Overall, I liked it, despite the incredible cheesiness. I'm sorry, but the dolphin dancing in the floor during Voulez-Vous was just too much. |
It is FUN. Saw it with my mom, sister and niece and will see it again with my eldest daughter when she returns from NC.
It took 30 years, but my love for ABBA is finally vindicated and rewarded! |
Took my mom to see it on opening night. Frankly, we weren't impressed with it - neither of us had seen it on stage or even heard much about it.
Amanda Seyfried was fantastic, though, and I hope to see more of her. |
I saw it opening weekend and rather enjoyed it. I used to listen to ABBA Gold on heavy rotation; I'm not sure my movie-viewing companion, who was less versed in the wonders of ABBA, enjoyed it as much as I did.
The guy playing Amanda Seyfried's fiance was HOT. Poor Pierce Brosnan really can't sing. |

I've seen the live show a couple of times, including New York. A high school classmate of our daughters is playing Sky on Broadway right now. Guess I'll have to see the movie. |
I saw it today (yesterday now, I guess) and really liked it! It's just a fun movie. My jaw actually ached by the end because I was smiling and laughing so much. Pierce Brosnan didn't have the best voice, true, but it seemed to make him more human, actually. He's right up there with Patrick Dempsey for sexy male actors. At one point, I leaned over to my friend and said "If she doesn't want him, I'll gladly take him!" and she laughed and said she was just thinking the exact same thing.
Anyway, very fun movie.. made me want to get up and dance... |
I thought the acting (by everyone) was great, but the plot is a little weird (like how Sophie tries to keep it a secret from Donna and Sky that she invited her fathers and how Donna tries to keep it a secret that she doesn't know who Sophie's father is; also the twist at the end---I hadn't seen it on stage, so I was definitely not expecting it).
Meryl Streep will be a serious contender for another Oscar. Yes, Pierce Brosnan is not much of a singer, but it doesn't really detract. Amanda Seyfried---WOW! Great voice. Loved Gimme Gimme Gimme and Lay All Your Love On Me with Dominic Cooper (gorgeous, btw). I was surprised at how well the songs work with the story. Usually it's the other way around---the songs are written for the plot. Overall, a very fun movie. |
Finally saw the movie last night. I thought Meryl was a little too old for the role. She's 58, probably playing early-to-mid 50s. However, I don't find it too realistic for someone in their 30s to fool around with three guys, no matter how free-spirited they are.
I totally missed the gay thing with Colin Firth until the end as well. Were there any hints earlier on? |
I liked the movie! It was pretty good and I was surprised by Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep's voices....both were great! Pierce wasn't as bad as everyone said, he was alright at singing.
What a cute and fun movie! |
I was very impressed by Mamma Mia, especially since almost every other review I heard was calling it horrible. I had a really good time watching it. What I don't get is if Sophie is 20, that would have put the "original" summer back in '88, and the photos the guys kept showing looked like they were from the 70s.

Man, Meryl blew me away with "The Winner Takes It All"

I don't think films like this are real tied to timelines. Not to mention that the hippie and punk eras were different time periods anyway. LOL. |
Christine Baranski channeled some seriously fierce drag queens for her character. It was so over the top at most points it was campy.
|
I finally saw the movie yesterday - AND LOVED IT (mary scream!!!)
Meryl Streep is amazing, what can that woman not do. I agree that "Winner Takes it All" was incredible! I loved the setting too - I want (and need) to escape to an island like that!!! Also, I was expecting Pearce Brosnon to be worse, but I thought he was cute, he certainly gave the singing the old college try:) |
I liked the movie a lot, but not as much as my mom. I'm on an Abba kick now, though. :)
I didn't get why they were in Greece though. I get that Meryl Streep was on vacation and stayed there when she got pregnant (or something like that), but it still seemed odd. |

That's the phrase I was remembering from Drama 101 - the willing suspension of disbelief. I agree, Pierce Brosnan's singing left lots to be desired. I've seen it twice now and found the first time I was listening mostly to how the people I knew as "actors" could sing....Amanda from Mean Girls, Meryl, of course, and Pierce....whew!
The second time I enjoyed the movie soooooo much more - it was pure 70s flashback fun! No judging the quality of the singing, just loving the lyrics and how they played into the plot! Beautiful scenery, great extras - I want to go to Greece...... |
