Estelle Getty, May She Rest in Peace

Estelle Getty, known as Sophia on Golden Girls will no longer be threatened with a trip back to Shady Pines.

May she rest in peace.

Alzheimer's is a cause of dementia. There are certainly others, but Alzheimer's seems to be the most widely known.

How sad. I use to watch the Golden Girls with my great grandmother when I was growing up...good times...RIP

When I saw this thread, I thought of one of Sophia's other favorite sayings:

"May he rest in peace until I get there!"

RIP, Estelle. :(

As I understand it, (basically) dementia makes you confused and Alzheimer's makes you forget stuff. My grandma has both.

Let's raise a cheesecake in honor of Estelle!!

I think I will have a slice tonight in her honor. I became addicted to GG in college. It came on right after Young & The Restless but before Jerry Springer (hey, I went to college in the 90's so this was my routine after class).

I'm sure Lifetime will be running a marathon this weekend.

RIP and God bless Estelle. :(

Just to clear it up, Alzheimer's is a form of dementia.

RIP to my favorite Golden Girl.

Munchkin03 07-22-2008 07:59 PM

I am so sad! I LOVED GG...and Sophia was my favorite. :( Gonna rent it this weekend and watch...

"May your marinara never stick to your pasta!"

Estelle Getty did not have Alzheimers, but another form of dementia that was misdiagnosed as Parkinsons as well as Alzheimers. Apparently someone else of moderate fame died of it this week as well.

:(

I love the show and I loved her. She will be missed.

In her honor, here are some of my favorite Sophia quotes:

Sophia: "Excuse me Rose, but I haven't had sex in fifteen years and its starting to get on my nerves."

Dorothy: "Hi, ma. Where are you going?"
Sophia: "To the boardwalk. I like to watch the old guys rearrange themselves when they come out of the water."

Blanche: "I treat my body like a temple."
Sophia: "Yeah, open to everyone, day or night."

Sophia: "I hate communism."
Dorothy: "Of course you hate communism, Ma it's because you were raised a fascist."

Sophia: "You're Blanche's daughter, the model?"
Rebecca: "That's right."
Sophia: "What did she model - car covers?"

Rose: "I just found out I'm the most boring on Earth."
Sophia: "Did something happen to Regis Philbin?"

Blanche: "Oh girls... I'm just in ecstasy. My body is tingling all over. You will never guess what just happened."
Sophia: "We know what happened. Let us just guess what part of the Middle East he's from."

Blanche: "I have writer's block. It's the worst feeling in the world."
Sophia: "Try ten days without a bowel movement sometime."

Sophia: "I hate Jell-O. If God wanted peaches suspended in midair, he would have filled them with helium."

Love the Golden Girls and Sophia was great. Wasn't she the youngest of the 4 too?

jitterbug13 07-22-2008 11:36 PM

Rue McClanannan (sp) is the youngest. She's in her early-mid 70s. Estelle was actually younger than Bea Arthur and Betty White.

Lifetime is doing a tribute to her with GG episodes Friday from Noon to 5 p.m. You can go on their website and vote on five episodes. The winning one will be the final episode shown during the marathon.

Why can't they do the marathon when working people without DVRs/TiVo are home to watch it?

jitterbug13 07-23-2008 04:20 PM

I guess since they already show it at 4 p.m., it sort of makes sense. I would normally be home during that time since I work on Fridays, but I'll probably be just arriving in Orlando when it's on.

Found this while digging:

Quote:

TV's Inside Edition caught up with Estelle Getty's son, Carl, to get
to the bottom of why the living Golden Girls skipped out on her
funeral.

Carl told the show, "They would certainly have been welcome. I don't
know why they wouldn't be attending mom's funeral. Maybe it's a
painful thing…As for the rest of them you're going to have to ask them
how they felt about it and why they did or didn't come."

Inside Edition took Carl's advice and reached out to the ladies.

Bea "Dorothy" Arthur, told the show she's been grieving for years over
Getty's long decline due to dementia, and could not deal with the
emotion of a funeral: "She's been out of it so many years, not
recognizing anyone. It's a Godsend. She's at peace."

Rue "Blanche" McClanahan, said that she couldn't attend the funeral
because she recently had surgery: "I'd like them to know that I didn't
[attend the funeral] because I can't fly right now with knee surgery.
I don't know why Betty and Bea didn't go, maybe because they, too,
have said their goodbyes to her when she was alive."

The show did not speak with Betty White, but they learned that she
sent a bouquet of flowers with a card that read, "Love, Betty White."
In quotes she added the name of her character on the show, "Rose."

And there you have it.

Estelle's son seems to have perceived the absences as a snub, though.
Says Carl: "If it was someone I'd been tight with like that and worked
with all those years I'd have been there."

Senusret I 07-28-2008 05:09 PM

Awww.....it's sad that he saw it as a snub. I hope he comes to realize that people grieve differently. Moreover, although funerals are to comfort the living, maybe they just weren't very close to the rest of her family like that.
