Yasmin to Ocella?

Has anyone changed from Yasmin to Ocella? I've felt fine all day and I took my first pill an hour or so ago and I instantly started feeling real nauseous. I googled it and now I'm seeing all kinds of side effects that people are having. Has anyone else's pharmacy switched them? If this pill affects me so much, I'm wondering if they pharmacy will give me a free pack of Yasmin since I didn't ask to be switchd.

LucyKKG 07-21-2008 01:44 AM

I haven't taken either of those, but I was really nauseas when I first started my BC. I felt sick for about an hour after I took it for a the first couple of weeks. Bleh!

DolphinChicaDDD 07-21-2008 08:20 AM

Is Ocella the generic version? If it is, it probably isn't the pharmacy that you'd have to contact, it would be your insurance. I had to fight to get my last insurance policy to keep me on the name brand. My doctor had to rewrite the prescription so that the generic couldn't be used and I had to pay an extra copay.

Second here that the generic or "it's the same as ____ but it's by a different manufactururer, you'll never see the difference" is BEE ESS as far as birth control pills are concerned.

ZTAMich 07-21-2008 09:11 AM

The insurance company for my prescriptions is thru my Teacher's Union. They JUST sent me a letter letting me know that next time I refill Yasmin I'll be getting the generic :( I have a friend who works in the pharm. world and she doesn't say many good things about generic drugs.

PM_Mama00 07-21-2008 09:15 AM

I just emailed my pharmacy turned physician assistant friend about it. All these people say that they were super nauseous, throwing up, stomach cramps. But I know people who throw up from any kind of birth control. I've never been affected more than feeling nauseous everyday for the first week of my pack.

Amen. My lame insurance won't pay for brand name birth control, but the generic makes me sooo sick and icky feeling, so I've just resigned to paying for it out of pocket.

Munchkin03 07-21-2008 10:10 AM

I've never had problems with generics, even though I've heard plenty of horror stories.

My doctor and I are convinced that my switching to a generic has something to do with my weight gain. It times too perfectly and there is no other reason for me to gain almost 40lbs in such a short time. My diet didn't drastically change and I was actually exercising more. Once I switched off, I lost 20lbs in about 1 1/2...with no diet change. Now only if I could lose the rest....but thats another thread.

My doctor put me on Yasmin because of the diauretic (sp?) in it. I gained about 30 on Ortho years ago. I called the office today and the nurse told me it is the exact same as Yasmin and the nauseousness is from changing to a different pill and if it didn't go away in a few days they'd switch me back.

SigKapSweetie 07-21-2008 07:50 PM

Pharmacies do this to us all the time, because the insurance companies ding them if they don't. Have your physician write 'dispense as written' on the prescription along with the brand name to keep them from giving you the generic.

Scandia 07-21-2008 08:48 PM

I use Triphasil/OrthoTriCyclen. My weight has decreased since I started using them. I have absolutely no other negative side effects. Granted, mine are for the treatment of PCOS and thus birth control would be a secondary result. But I highly highly highly recommend Triphasil.

That was very nearly the same post I had in mind, except that I use the Tri-Sprintec generic of Ortho. Highly, HIGHLY recommend it whether for birth control or PCOS as I have never had a single problem.

If you can't use a generic, and your insurance won't cover the name brand (or they won't cover Birth Control at all), check with your local Planned Parenthood. They may be able to help you with low cost or free birth control. I worked with a woman who could only use the Nuvaring and she would have payed $50 on campus, whereas PP gave it to her for $13 a month.

I sometimes wonder about insurance companies, isn't it cheaper and less of a hassle to authorize a birth control of choice for a patient instead of having to pay for prenatal care, a birth, post natal care, well baby checkups and then having the child on the insurance for 18+ years?

PM_Mama00 07-22-2008 10:02 AM

Not only prenatal care and all that, but having to pay for an endometriosis surgery. I've been on the pill for severe cramping and now I may have endometriosis and my doctor said the pill is good for trying to regulate it and keep it to a minimum. I don't understand why insurance won't cover it for medical uses.

I have a couple packs of Yasmin that I never used sitting in the medicine cabinet. I have yet to get a straight answer as to how to get rid of them (don't want to flush them or just throw them away since they are hormones). They give me really horrible migraines.

And I would think that the pill would be a huge savings over endometrial surgery. I don't understand insurance companies sometimes.

SRSLY, if they can do it with all the makeup swapping, I don't know why not w/ BC pills. We did this all the time in school when people went off it.

I think it depends on your insurance company, or maybe it's state-by-state? When I started taking the Pill, it was for severe cramps (seriously, I would throw up the first day of each period). I had no problem getting it covered by the insurance. Now that I'm just taking it as no-baby candy, my insurance now covers it. In fact, the Pill has the cheapest co-pay of any of my prescriptions.

pinkyphimu 07-22-2008 01:10 PM

My packs just went up to $35...and I don't know why as there was supposed to be no change in our perscription plan. While $35/ month is less than paying for a child, I can't afford that much. I have tried taking generics and they definately make me feel awful.

The newest recommendation is to mix it with kitty litter and throw it out. I think the kitty litter step is more to make it less appealing for kids who might dumpster dive. I typically just throw them out. Just don't flush it, thats bad. There is a much lesser chance of the hormones making it into water via the landfill than when it gets flushed.

PM_Mama00 07-23-2008 06:10 PM

So it's now Wednesday and I started on them Sunday and I've been feeling fine!

tld221 07-23-2008 07:29 PM

I used to use Ortho years ago and more currently Yasmin. im into my 3rd month and iim spotting like crazy. its like i got my period first then got all PMS-y. i dont understand. sigh.

The real joke is, the insurances cover Viagra with no problem, but not birth control. It's still a man's world.

now THAT is a huge problem. insurance can pay for a 4 hour hard-on but not for my uterus and I to go through WW3 every month?

This is a myth for most insurance plans. The past three major insurance plans I've had (blue cross, blue shield, kaiser permanente/group health) specified that they do NOT cover ED meds. On the other hand, most DO cover oral contraceptives, at least generics. In fact, in this state insurance companies MUST cover bcp.

Yep. I am one of THOSE women. I have tried NUMEROUS oral conts. They ALL make me vomit as bad as when I had morning sickness. My doctor said to try one more thing (Nuva ring) before it was either use nothing or IUD. The Nuvaring is the best thing on the entire planet.

I tried it and was immediately hooked. It's all I'll use.

It is WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still only get $5.00 off of it by the insurance company. But, I would rather pay for something that works well than take something inferior for me and my body and save money. $35.00 a month for not being pregnant again works for me! Lord knows we'd spend 100x that if we had another child.

tld221 07-23-2008 11:53 PM

anyone patching it out? is it worth a try?

my sister is using the patch and random sidenote: you would THINK that because its a new-ish product (versus the BandAid) that it would be produced in different flesh tones. but noooooooooo shes got this hideous 2" square on her shoulder blade.

i suppose clear ones would be way too much to ask?

EagleChick19 07-24-2008 06:08 AM

I am! It's not so bad, except when I put it on my lower back and my shirt goes up...LOL.

You should give it a try!

I tried the patch. I never felt sick as a result of it, but I'll never go back to it simply because I have ultra-sensitive skin and it felt like someone was constantly holding a flame to my skin (at the patch-site). I thought I could tough it out and get used to it, but I gave up after three months. It took almost six more months for all the patch-site redness to completely go away. Never again!

yasmin = ocella

To all of those who have concerns about switching to the generic version of Yasmin, otherwise known as Ocella, I can ease some of your concerns. Ocella is made by Bayer, the same company that makes Yasmin. It is made the same way, with the exact same ingredients. The only difference is the packaging. I know some have stated that they've noticed nausea and other side effects. This could be due to a certain "placebo" effect. Basically, mind over matter. I began taking Ocella in place of Yasmin, and have not had any side effects.

I tried the patch and didn't like it. The adhesive is very finicky---either it doesn't last the whole week & falls off, or it REALLY sticks to you and is hard to get off after the week is over.

I got really sick for the time I used the patch, and I had never felt any symptoms when I was taking the pill.

Plus, since i'm on a budget (college grad, no job) it wasn't work paying the $40 a month when I could get my pills for $5 (and i haven't had problems with generic brand I have).

I don't believe you.

Old Navy is made by the same company that makes Banana Republic, but the quality is most assuredly not the same.

DreamfulSpirit 07-28-2008 12:12 AM

Through insurance, they make me go through their mail-order thing. Otherwise they make it more expensive to go and get it from the pharmacy. So when I order my Yasmin, they send me 3 months worth at a time. I haven't gotten anything saying I'm being switched to Ocella yet.

Does anyone know anything about this Yasmin/Yaz/Ocella lawsuit? It mentions gallbladder disease. I didn't know that birth control can affect your gallbladder. I had to have mine out last year because it wasn't functioning correctly. I'm curious if anyone has any info or experience with this lawsuit. Should I worry more now?

I haven't heard about this lawsuit, but I've been on Yasmin for almost 5 years now, and I had to get my gallbladder removed last year. The pain started just after I got the first HPV shot, and I linked it to that, as it was too coincidental that I got the shots and the pain started within the next few days. Now I'm wondering if it was due to my birth control...I'm definitely going to see what I can find out.

I've seen some commercials while watching the Wendy Williams Show with a law firm one can call, likely to enter into a class action law suit. I am sure you can google and find the firms that are finding people who have had problems.
