What is your family name?

My organization has a tradition that every family has a family name. I was just wondering what other people's family names are (sororities AND fraternities)!

Mine is the sheep family (in honor of the family's "black sheep," she was so different from everyone else in the family, but we love her anyway!)

LightBulb 07-13-2008 09:57 PM

We are the Cross Family. :)

Never had em, don't want em, think family names are stupid.

Co-sign. My letters are quite enough for me, thank you.

icelandelf 07-13-2008 10:08 PM

We never had family names at my chapter.

CrackerBarrel 07-13-2008 10:12 PM

Well I'll go ahead and chime in that I've never heard of a decent (not even good, just decent) fraternity chapter in the SEC who had family names.

LadyLonghorn 07-13-2008 10:19 PM

We are the Manson Family and we only date members of the Fratrick Bateman Family. Strictly top tier!

The only problem you run into with that is this:

There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there.

Senusret I 07-13-2008 10:25 PM

The Ashby Tree. (Named after the actual person we can trace our lineage to)

That was APO. I don't have a family or a tree in Alpha, but some chapters do.

luv n tpa 07-13-2008 10:26 PM

Mine is the I'm-Not-Falling-For-This Family.

No way - that's the same as mine!

OP: I wonder if your boyfriend has checked out this thread? Do you think he is going to? Wait...you didn't make this so he could steal someone else's family name, did you??

Nah, that would be pretty low. And very transparent.

kvitne 07-13-2008 10:43 PM

.

SWTXBelle 07-13-2008 10:44 PM

Pssst . . .last time I checked, Elon wasn't in the SEC.

33girl 07-13-2008 10:48 PM

We did not have family names in ASA or APO. We all bought the same shirt or sweatshirt for our littles, but that was it.

kvitne: credit for being a fast learner, dude.

Unregistered- 07-13-2008 10:49 PM

The OP is lucky this isn't FH. Steve Zissou would have outed him by now.

I don't know where the hell he thought CB insulted his chapter.

Where's Xylochick? Shes from Elon, right?

We have family letters, too. Ours are white shirts/sweat shirts with pink letters and green edging.

He sure is. I'm no SteveZissou, but I could out both of them already, I just don't know GreekChat's policy on it and would prefer not to be banned.

You have a pretty bad case of High-Horse-itis huh?

If you had nothing to add to the thread, then it's pretty much pointless to post a response.

Anyway, my family is "La Familia" and I'm in the subfamily of "High Maintenance." It's pretty common for orgs to have family names on my campus.

Which is of course way better than a terminal case of bottom-tier-itis.

(joking, joking, joking. kind of. and i'm referring to fraternity family names, not you PantherTeke)

SWTXBelle 07-13-2008 11:05 PM

Cracker Barrel, you are on a roll!

Hey, I'm punny!

Thanks for the compliment. I ride that horse proudly. :)

How funny the boyfriend deleted his posts proclaiming his Elon fraternity chapter's accomplishments.

Musicwalksuhome 07-14-2008 12:30 AM

Our chapter has families. Each family has secrets and their name means something. My family was bliss.
The other families were (I am going to try to remember them all but i'll probably forget):
Abba, 7DS, bomb, sbob, O, CB40, go gos

phimubabycorn 07-16-2008 12:24 AM

we have 3 families - but no family secrets, just shirt colors.

Flipmode
Disney
Mafia

I thought there was a "Dark Side" family

PhiMuGirl07 07-16-2008 03:48 AM

Funny, I thought the name of this thread was does your GLO have family names and what are they. Not are family names stupid and beneath you? Well since i'm responding to what I though this post was about I'll just say that my family is the diamond family. We also have a heart, star, and lucky family. They all have meanings behind them and traditions.

Co-sign.

My family is the Star Family. I began it when my big gave me a bag with letters in this cute blue star pattern. She transfered the next semester after I got her as my big and a lot of my family had branched out or graduated so I started a new one based on that. Also, the star is 5-pointed like the crown that's ZTA's symbol so it fit nicely. We have our own traditions that stay in the family and now we all use that fabric to make family letters (white background on a long-sleeved navy shirt) that you receive in your initiation basket. We also craft a lot of stuff for our littles with stars on it and in the shape of a star, along with other general ZTA stuff while they're NMs.

MaggieXi 07-16-2008 04:03 PM

Elon is not in the SEC. It's in SoCon.

Thats general Elon knowledge.

I'm here, I'm here.

Elon is definitely Southern Conference.

I believe the OP is a newer member of my chapter. Family names are fairly new at our chapter. Many don't trace back to the founders (the class before me).

like i think our disney family is tied to your la familia somehow, but that would make perfect sense w/ TKE and Phi Mu on our campus.

=)

Is that the same as Sewannee?

Shadowskream459 07-21-2008 12:41 PM

we don't have "Families" but we have three different lineages, one of each color of the Fraternity: Purple, Green, and Gold. The only difference in lineage is your jersey color: you get the same color jersey as your big.

I think that's neat!

KD_Lady 07-21-2008 02:50 PM

My family is the Mafia family, too (we have a long history of Presidents!)

Families are really big in my chapter. Here are few more names:
- Pretty Pretty Princess Family (Disney Princess theme)
- Cult Family
- Pirate Family
- Hawaiian Family
- Hottest Family Ever
- Kaos Family

Just a few ideas. Everyone gets a hoodie with KD letters in their family fabric during big little, and we wear them for family night sisterhoods and post-initiation activities :)

jennlovesgphib 07-24-2008 08:43 AM

my family is the Ohana family. For any of you Disney watchers, we got that from the movie Lilo and Stitch because Ohana means family!

SWTXBelle 07-24-2008 10:20 AM

So, you are the Family Family?:D It's like a cheese quesadilla!

Thanks. Not knocking the family thing, but I don't really get it. It almost seems like a "sub Fraternity/Sorority" kind of thing to me, but being in an org without families, I guess I don't get it.

I just know a lot of orginizations I've talked to with families have families that tend to vote to make sure the Pres. is in their family or something like that. Seems like it would break the bond of the entire fraternity to me.

Anyone care to elaborate on this to me?

In my APO chapter, "trees" (families) are ways to get to feel connected to people in the chapter you might not ordinarily hang around because they're in a different pledge class or graduating year than you.

They also helped the alumni secretary have a backup method of locating alumni. The directory can tell you who pledged with them, but the family tree can tell you who else they had a relationship with.

We never used families outside of fellowship purposes.

Don't you have a big brother?

As for families that do stuff like that, they're stupid.

No I have a big, but we don't have a family. He's just my big, and I have a grand big, etc, etc, but we don't call ourselves a family. And like I said earlier about our lineages, our only difference is our jersey color. The gold lineage (mine) is the biggest in our Zeta, but no one makes a deal out of it. I just don't understand why you would have a sub-group in your fraterntiy, but we're a relatively small campus, with small orgs. We're the largest on campus at approx 45 members, so we all hang out. No need for cliques I guess.
