Bar Exam Anyone?

Anyone else getting ready to take the bar exam in like 2 weeks? Holy crap....2 weeks!!!!

GeekyPenguin 07-23-2008 03:12 PM

YES I HATE IT A LOT. I want my summer back.

I am doing crappy on the questions for subjects I got As in, and the subjects I got gentleman's Cs in are suddenly my best.

basket96 07-23-2008 06:16 PM

No, but my husband is about to sit for the California bar. AAAAaaarrrrggggghhhh! I can't wait 'til it's over!

AphiRattlerGal and GeekyPenguin, are you also in CA? Good luck to you both! I hope you pass!

Oh poor him, the very idea of a 3-day bar makes me cry right now. (Well, so does everything else...)

I'm taking the WI bar which is "supposed" to be easy but I'm a little freaked out. Good luck to your husband!

VandalShyster is finishing day three tomorrow. Washington only offers it in Seattle, which is a real travel annoyance since Gonzaga is in Spokane and having an east side testing site would make sense. Idaho offers it in Boise and in Moscow at the U of I, three fun filled days next week!

basket96 07-24-2008 01:06 PM

Thanks for the good luck wishes, GeekyPenguin! At this point he is so stressed and not sleeping, etc. We leave on vacation the day after he finishes, so hopefully he can finally relax then!

Yesterday "his" room at the local library was taken when he got there and that seemed to freak him out. He left early this morning to get the room (our little library has only one private room).

Boy, will I be glad when this is over! I wish all of you the best!

Kevin 07-24-2008 01:27 PM

Not til next year. Sounds like y'all are in hell :)

Signed up for everything though, got my letter of confirmation yesterday.

Good luck folks.

We have had construction on our street and VandalShyster was always at the library because of the noise. I am SO GLAD I was on an archaeology dig and only had to deal with him for three weeks, of course it was the last three weeks of studying which are probably the most annoying. Maybe he'll become the same guy I left in May instead of the crazy person I've been blessed with being around since I got back.

I think the two worst bar exams are California and New York, you have my sympathies.

basket96 07-24-2008 10:30 PM

Thanks, VandalSquirrel,
I am hoping for the return of my REAL husband, not this maniac I am currently living with! Ha! I had to explain to our son (4 years old) that Daddy is just studying for a very important test and is not mad! We are now in the process of making a care package for Daddy -- one for him to take while he takes the bar. We are wrapping a shoe box and filling it with mints, gum, aspirin, photos, colored pages, mouthwash, etc. Hopefully that will help him get through those 3 days of he**!

I didn't even bother to give him anything since he had to travel and was seeing mom and sister on the way. Luckily I can combine a "Thank you Baby Jesus the freaking bar exam is over" dinner with his birthday and save money.

I am also very happy that I don't have to hear the excuse "But I'm in law school" or "I'm studying for the bar" ever again! It is really hard to be sympathetic when you've been living in a tent in remote Alaska, haven't showered for five days, everything you eat comes from a can, and you're doing manual labor and other work for 12 hours a day six days a week.

ETA: I think I'm going to make him a nice list of stuff to do around the house ;)

Not for two years for me. But, like you, wishing everyone good luck.

APhiRattlerGal 07-26-2008 08:18 PM

Ack!

Thanks Basket and everyone else for the good luck wishes. I'm taking the Colorado bar here in Denver. :( I'll be sooo happy when its all over. Boyfriend proposed to me last night and while my new ring is definitely something pretty to look at, i will be so happy in a couple days when I will get to relax and start the wedding planning process.

Good luck to everyone else taking the dreaded exam. i can't WAIT till its over!! :)

That's so exciting, congratulations! You should get a wedding magazine to read on Tuesday night to clear your mind!

I highly recommend the half-day MBE to anyone who hasn't done it already - BarBri claims you should shoot for 50% on that. I did way better and am finally feeling okay about the MBE.

Kevin 07-27-2008 09:14 AM

Oklahoma doesn't require the MBE. I took a sample once -- sucks to be y'all.

Are you sure Kevin? A couple of buddies of mine are taking the Oklahoma bar exam this week and I know they have to take the MBE. Hmmm...or maybe Oklahoma changed it for when you take it?

Geeky, thanks! Yea i think i will do that! :)

My understanding is that Oklahoma requires (as all states except Washington and Louisiana do) the MBE of its applicants. The MBE is the Multistate Bar Exam. This is the 'multi-choice' portion of the Bar and covers what is typically 1L subjects (plus Evidence).

Oklahoma does NOT, however, require the MEE--the Multistate Essay Exam. This is the Essay portion of the Bar that some states require of their applicants (for example, in Illinois, there are 6 MEE questions given to applicants in the afternoon of Day 1).
Oklahoma also does not use the MPT--the Multistate Performance Test which is used in about 1/2 of the 50 states.

(PS: I got this information from information on the OKCU School of Law website ;) ).

Regardless--both parts kinda suck (especially the MBE in my opinion--it was the hardest multiple choice test EVER!)

Unregistered- 07-29-2008 06:22 PM

Sending tons of good lucks and well wishes to GP, APhiRattlerGal, VandalShyster, basket96 husband, and all those taking the big test tomorrow.

Kath, I hope you get some sleep once this is all over. :o

basket96 07-29-2008 08:43 PM

Ok, so hubby is taking the CA bar today, so I tell him I'll bring him lunch during his break. I show up around 11:30 and at 11:40 we have this HUGE earthquake only about 10 miles from where they are taking the Bar. He said one guy said "Holy *$#!&" and a few ducked under the tables. Once he saw the overhead lights were ok (despite swinging to and fro precipitously), he kept going.

A few other wives, parents, friends, etc. were outside waiting with lunch for their loved ones and we all sort of looked at each other -- was that an earthquake? One gal was from the east coast and had never experienced one before. "Welcome to California". The good thing about most of these earthquakes is that they are over rather quickly. I heard on the news that there were a number of aftershocks, but they must have been quite small, as I did not even feel one of them.

I hope that's the worst thing that happens during their exam. As if they weren't stressed enough!

I hope everyone else's day was less eventful!

GeekyPenguin 07-29-2008 09:16 PM

I just want everyone to know how fantastic it was that there was a case in my library for the MPT published in 1979 that was citing law from 1986 and 1999. Good work there, NCBEX.

Well crap.

It was the MEE I tried then. I don't pay much attention to alphabet soup stuff until it begins to affect me -- and it won't 'til next year.

GeekyPenguin 08-28-2008 02:31 PM

I kind of hate waiting for results.

I think bar exam results take quite a while - I've heard similar stories from friends of mine who have taken it in CT, NY and MA.

I know for the Idaho and Washington bars people take them late July and get the results for Idaho in September, and the first week of October for Washington. If I remember right there are hand scored essay questions, which would account for the amount of time involved.

GeekyPenguin 08-28-2008 09:38 PM

Yeah, the cracked out thing is WI hand-scores all the essays the Thursday and Friday after the exam. I'm guessing it's just the MBE (and maybe MPT) scores that take so long. It's just frustrating and I don't really want to work at the mall anymore.

GeekyPenguin 09-09-2008 01:54 PM

I PASSED. You all will too.

Good Job ESQUIRE! You're licensed to practice law in the same state as Joe McCarthy was, that's kind of awesome.

I Need A Favor!!

I am relocating to GA within the next five or six months and will be (hopefully) taking the GA bar in July 2009. I am in need of bar materials. Does anyone here (or anyone you know) have any books, outlines, etc. that you are willing to pass on to me for the low, low price of $Free.99? If so, PM me please.

I checked the price of BarBri and it's OUTRAGEOUS!! I might have to take up a collection to pay for the course (if I take it). Has anyone had any success with self-study for the bar? I keep hearing that I NEED a course, but the cost is astronomical. Any advice?

DoubleTDG 12-06-2008 06:30 PM

I am a Barbri rep for the University of Tulsa, and I would suggest contacting a representative in your area. There is an alumni course price that is a significant discount from the full price. The Barbri office in GA can be reached at (770) 964-1960 or (800) 360-7277. If you have any general questions about what the GA bar covers, I have some information on it. Please feel free to PM me if you would like the address or fax number of the Barbri office.

GeekyPenguin 12-06-2008 09:54 PM

Look on eBay or Craigslist for books. I sold all of mine to someone I knew who failed for the BarBRI refund price, but I had a few friends who sold theirs for half-price or so online.
