Family Names?

I just recently finished my pledging period for my fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi, and am really excited to be a new member of a Greek family. At my university, there is a tradition that each family in an organization have a "family name." However my family has no name and I've been trying to come up with one. Does anyone here have any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. My fraternity already has family names like Dynasty, Godfather, Mafia, and Scarface.

Thanks!

catiebug 07-13-2008 02:33 AM

No offense, but you really think complete strangers on an Internet site know you, your family AND your organization well enough to give you ideas on a name that (should) hold some semblance of a meaning to its members???

kvitne 07-13-2008 02:41 AM

Wow, I was just looking for ideas. I'm pretty sure it's not necessarily supposed to be indicative of the members of the family, considering that there are names like Dynasty, Godfather, or Mafia. It's just supposed to be a cool name for a cool family.

Different things have different meanings to certain organizations. I would appreciate it if you held some respect towards my organization and understand that, while I'm new, I do know enough about my organization to know that it's appropriate to ask for ideas. I believe that we should act with class on this website and part of being Greek is being a considerate member of the Greek Community. Maybe you should work on that.

Family Name Sugestions

Well, for those who don't know, Kvitne and I have been dating for almost two years and I have known about his search for a family name for a while. I have come up with some suggestions. Feel free to add more!
1. Blues Brothers Family
2. VIP Family
3. Power House Family
4. Dark Knight Family
5. The Mason Family
6. The Templar Family
7. The Alpha Family
8. The Simpson Family/Dynasty
9. The Rockstar Family

Sooo . . . if I point out that she has a point, I'm being disrespectful to all of Pi Kappa Phi?

It sounds like your girlfriend has a clear handle on some ideas - and she would be in a postion to know what you and your group might consider "cool". If you wish to pick our brains for additional ideas, you might let us know why the offered ones are not acceptable.

Or you could go to Happy Pony Rainbow Land.

If you already have a "mob" theme going (it seems like your chapter does) then some obvious suggestions would be Soprano, Corleone, Capone, Gotti, etc.

Thank you APhiAnna, those are some awesome suggestions!

There's nothing wrong with my SCogs18's ideas. It's just that I have a rather large family and I want to be able to bring as many suggestions to the table as possible so that we can all decide on one that everyone likes.

CrackerBarrel 07-13-2008 08:34 PM

I personally think you should name yourselves

"THE UNCREATIVE FAMILY"

Or if that doesn't work at least pick a different kind of movie. "The American Psychos" sounds pretty BA I think.

Either that or act like a real fraternity and realize that you should be cool enough that you don't need a name from a movie to make you seem cool and tuff.

Really guys? Let's keep this kind. All this guys asked was for some friendly input on family names. Harassment and name calling is totally uncalled for. If you don't have legitimate suggestions for a family name take your posts elsewhere.

CrackerBarrel 07-13-2008 09:42 PM

I gave one legitimate suggestion. American Psycho is a fratastic movie, way more so than the Godfather or especially that garbage movie Scarface.

But in addition to that, I offered the criticism that naming families (particularly after movies) is 1) something sororities do, not fraternities and 2) pretty dumb even then IMO.

SWTXBelle 07-13-2008 09:43 PM

Happy Pony Rainbow Land Alert!

Or, here's an idea - if you don't like the tone of this site, Mr. Just Joined And Has 9 Posts, feel free to go to the land of fluffy clouds and bright rainbows. If we feel your post is ridiculous, you'll get called on it.

And I'm not a guy.:)

eta - Did I just make a snarky post???!!!

SCogs18 07-13-2008 09:51 PM

First off, at our university, it is very common, in fact, expected that fraternity and sorority families have names.

Second of all, get off your high horse, what difference does it make if I have a low number of posts? If that is really what matters it's pitiful. I may not post often, but I have been Greek for years, get over yourself.

Sweets, I would like to know how much you think you're going to make GC change by giving out behavioral lectures. Just FYI, you're just giving more fuel to the fire. But by all means keep going, because I'm sure plenty of us find it entertaining at your [and your boyfriend's] expense.

CrackerBarrel 07-13-2008 09:55 PM

If you want to make some money on your search for a family name I'm sure you could do it very easily.

How about the GoldenPalace.com Family ?

I think it has a wonderful ring to it and is certainly no less classy than naming your greek family after gangster movies.

What difference does it make? You have obviously not taken the time to acquaint yourself with the way this site works. That being the case, the only person here on a high horse is you, telling us how to post.

Years? What, two? Three? Oooooo . . .I guess I should be intimidated. Silly me and my 25 years of membership. If you are new to a site, you really have no business telling the members how to behave.

I hate run-on sentences.

kvitne 07-13-2008 10:00 PM

We're not trying to change anything. Just stop junking up the topic with unhelpful comments. Have some common courtesy. I'm sure that if this were a discussion in person none of you would be saying half of this stuff. Just because it's the internet doesn't give you the right to sit there and insult people just because you can hide behind a clever username. All I wanted were some suggestions, but clearly most of you don't want to help. So thank you to everyone who offered legitimate suggestions, but I'll take my search elsewhere.

SWTXBelle 07-13-2008 10:01 PM

FLOUNCE

eta - and I've looked in vain for an "insult". I stood up for a member who pointed out that perhaps the internet was not the place to look for you answer, and if anything, you insulted her. PM Tom Earp and he can direct you to a fabulous site you will simply LOVE.

Yes, yes I would. I would laugh and then probably suggest the family name "Bottom Tier Terrors" or something like that. I'd follow that up by telling you that by not having a "cool" family name you were already the coolest family in your fraternity, because that's true.

Wow, you're almost 50 and all you have to do with your time is trash talk with 20-somethings online.

Your math skills are waaaaayyyyyyyy off. Perhaps you should go and do some addition tables and work on that. Oh, and I recommend Strunk and White's The Elements of Style for your English needs.

FWIW, several people on GC have met me in person and know that my online personality is very much like my real life personality.

So no, this isn't keyboard courage.

Cool, you have nothing better to do than defend your boyfriend on a Greek website where aside from a joke which was followed up by a real suggestion he was getting exactly the advice he asked for until you showed up.

Team Cracker Barrel.

How the hell did that happen? :p

SWTXBelle 07-13-2008 10:18 PM

Just once, wouldn't it be great if a FLOUNCE was followed by the flouncer actually leaving? But no - they just can't resist us!

And, I second OTW in saying that I am known for not suffering fools lightly. IRL, or here.

Broski, I responded because it's a Sunday night and I'm the one y'all are complaining about. Sorry for crashing the e-party I guess.

If you really want movie names that could be family names:

The Producers
Entourage
American Psychos (I'm still serious with that suggestion)
Die Hard
Lethal Weapons
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Nittany, are you making t-shirts? ;)

Sign me up - size medium. (Small if it is men's sizing)

Can I just say that I love Cracker Barrel?

The restaurant, not the poster. He's okay, too. But the restaurant rocks. They have fantastic breakfast.

Does that mean you need a t-shirt, too?

I think "Fredo" or "Luca Brazzi" is more along his lines.

p.s. to the girlfriend - unless the members of the family are actually Masons, the "Mason Family" and "Templar Family" are very inappropriate. You wouldn't call a family in Gamma Phi Beta the "Zeta Tau Alpha Family."

icelandelf 07-13-2008 10:51 PM

I want a t-shirt! And one of those little triangle games with the golf tees.
