Miss Universe 2008
All you pageant buffs out there, the Miss Universe pageant will air on Sunday at 9 eastern on NBC. The hosts will be Jerry Springer (yes, you heard me correctly) and Mel B (i.e. Scary Spice, which she is not scary anymore). I'll be watching it after BB10.
Is it true that the Miss Teen USA pageant is discontinued? I've read it on Wikipedia. But I don't trust Wikipedia too much, because some of the info is false. |
How can anyone possibly take these hosts seriously? I've been to state and local pageants in the Miss America system that have better hosts. The only reason I can possibly think of to have Mel B is to give it an international flavor.
According to the Miss Tean USA website, it's scheduled for August 16th on Paradise Island. http://www.missteenusa.com/ Ok, so why would you have any "USA" pageant outside the United States? Honestly, I think pageants are out of hand. |
Hopefully Miss USA can stay upright this year.
|
I've already set my DVR for tonight for Miss Universe. Cheering on USA and Canada (I'm Canadian, but I lived in the US since I was 6)
As for Miss Teen USA...I thought I heard it was going to be in the Bahamas. To be honest, not sure if Paradise Island is in the Bahamas or not. |
Because of time differences, they've already done the pageant. You can go to http://www.missuniverse.com and there's already links up to show top 15, top 10, and the top 5. I'm holding out...I want to see it later!

The daughter of a coworker is competing, which is the only reason I know this. |
I think the dresses they wear at the beginning are GORGEOUS!!!!
Do they change their names for the pageant? It just seems like a lot of these names sound very "American." |
omg, i cannot believe that just happened. again.
|
^^^I know!! But I think she handled it very well!

What else are you going to do? She's human has anyone else is. I have to admit I haven't really been paying attention to the scores though. And I have to say...the one who was after USA, Dominican Republic I think...I thought her dress was hideous!!! |

I admit my attention is not totally focused on it. I saw her fall and then I looked up again and saw her smiling.

She clearly stepped on her dress, twice. After that, she held it out of her way. Don't they practice with their actual dress and shoes on? |

On a side note, I totally think USA shouldn't have been in the top 20/25 or how ever many. I don't think she's very pretty. |
It was Miss USA. I think Miss USA always gets in just cuz everybody is afraid of us and don't want to make us mad.

This isn't the Miss Universe pageant, its the miss Anorexia pageant.
Venezuela, Australia & Italy----waaaay too thin, almost unhealthy looking. Colombia--wierd shaped body, really thin legs and a wide midsection South Africa & Mexico--they look really thin mainly because their hips are wider. Spain--she looks like she's the "biggest" of them all, and she's still super thin. Vietnam--looks like she has a little girl body (with barely bigger boobs) The others are thin, but not in a unhealthy or wierd-looking way. |
4th Runner Up: Mexico
3rd Runner Up: Russia 2nd Runner Up: Dominican Republic 1st Runner Up: Colombia Miss Universe 2008: Venezuela |
I think Venezuela has won more titles of Miss Universe than any other country.

oops...probably should have put those in white to not spoil it for others! |

ETA: Spain should have been chosen over Russia, she had higher points during the bathing suit & the evening gown. ETA2: Venezuela won w/ that craptastic answer? Really? |
I'm glad Colombia got to be 1st runner up. I think she definitely deserved it. Her dress was weird, but she knew what to do with it. (My bf who is Colo. was surprised to hear this b/c usually they don't go that far).
My only complaint is that I'm tired of no brown (I mean brown as in brown) skin girls making the top. I swear, we should just stop sending our girls there. It's just not worth the expense, they rarely ever make it and it's sad for me to watch. :( On a happier note-I'd love to have Miss South Africa's lower half, can you say wow?! :D Oh-and Miss Venezuela needs to lay off the dang eyeliner-her eyes looked so weird, I wish Miss Mexico would have won. |

4 of the five finalists are from Spanish Speaking countries. Miss Dominican Republic's dress looked trashy. It looks like a freaking nightgown. And Miss Mexico is beautiful, but she could had made a better selection with her evening gown. I liked Miss Venezuela's dress and earrings, but not together. When I saw Miss USA fell, I was like "Oh no, not again." I think that fall and the stepping at her dress had cost her a spot in the top 5. I love Miss Estonia's, Miss Canada's, Miss Japan's, and Miss Brazil's, Miss South Africa's and Miss UK's costume in the beginning. And also the dresses when they announced the final 15. And man did that singer from swimsuit round had on huge shoulder pads. http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/2..._GuJ1ejBj3uQ-- Miss Dominican Republic http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/2...dRtuS1XxYlDQ-- |
I intentionally didn't visit GC during the pageant because I was afraid I'd see the results on accident! Bummer about Miss USA. Srrrrrsly?
I liked the native costumes they had at the beginning. Do they do that every year? Ok, some of them where lame and DEFINITELY not what a native costume would look like. I was really happy with Miss Norway's costume, though. That's totally what they look like! :D |

Comments on this year's pageant: - Russia's evening gown was nearly identical to the Russian that won Miss Universe a few years ago, and had to give up her crown eventually. NO CREATIVITY POINTS FOR HER! - The South American contestants really are beautiful...too bad that most of them have probably had plastic surgery. - What is up with these evening gowns with the "nude" colored fabric? It's UGLY and not classy or elegant looking at all. Miss D.R. looked like she had covered herself in shards of glass, and the metal was reflecting light all over her neck/chin/face, but not in a subtle way. - Donald Trump may own Miss Universe, but they should really stop focusing the pageant on U.S. TV shows and inside jokes. Don't they realize how lame it all looks when not even the audience "gets" the jokes that the hosts have to deliver? - I would rather the contestants that can't speak English deliver their intelligent answers in their native tongue than hack it up while attempting to answer in English. This is Miss Universe, who says she must speak English, at least in the pageant? - I actually really liked Miss Venezuela's answer to her question, and I thought her dress was the prettiest up there. Her answer just got delivered a little messy because of the language barrier. Think about her answer - God made men and women to be different, but to go together. Unfortunately men think the straightest, shortest path to a destination is faster and better, whereas women believe that sometimes the curvy, bumpy road, stopping to "fix" each point along the way, is the best route. She would've gotten the message across far better if she had just spoken in Spanish. ETA: here's a photo of Miss Russia's dress several years ago when she won: http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/51094...0A659CEC4C8CB6 |
Do you think Miss USA got frazzled by the dancer that ran in front of her when her name was called? They had to call her twice because of it.
|
I think they called her too early. You can tell because she wasn't in place when they called her name the first time like all the other candidates, the cameras were still focusing on the traditional Vietnamese dancers as well. Jerry Springer just called her out before they were done with the musical break and had to say it again. I think she just fell cos isht happens...to Americans...TWICE!
|
I totally forgot about the pageant, but luckily I was able to tune in just in time for the Evening Gown to see Miss USA fall on her ass.
LOVED IT! |
Well, I'm glad that it was in the evening gown competition because there's a story on AOL that says she fell in the night gown competition. I was grossed out, thinking they'd sunk to new lows.
ETA AOL blurb: A Curse? 'Miss Actress' They competed for the crown, today we know them as actresses. Halle Berry and more... The déjà-vu of the pageant occurred when Miss USA fell during the night gown competition, just as it happened to last years contestant, Rachel Smith, during the 2007 Miss Universe pageant held in Mexico City. Crystle Stewart quickly stood up, applauded along with the audience and with a smile, continued to model as it nothing had happened. Some of the candidates had some interesting dress choices, such as Dominican Republic, wearing a tight gown adorned with crystals, Miss Mexico, with a white skirt and a see-through top that looked like a bra and Miss Colombia, with an interesting metallic design that was highly praised. |

My very late thoughts :D
-I honestly thought that Miss USA's trip was staged. It just looked it and I thought "oh she didn't". Last years Miss USA handled it so much better and made it to the top 5, I honestly think Crystle was "trying" that "luck" again. The thing though is, IMPO she isn't as pretty as last years Miss USA. -I loved Venezuala from the start. I thought she was absolutely adorable. Mexico and Columbia grew on me, I just wasn't a fan of their evening gowns. -as for the final question, basically I think the judges always choose someone who never answers the question correctly. I'm not sure if something is getting lost in translation but it's like these women just pull something out of their ass. I think they were saying "hi Vietnam" as a way to "stall" for time. If you noticed, the women who actually used the translator had much more than 30 seconds to respond. -While Venezuala's answer really had nothing to do with her question, I think she tried to answer the best she could with the language barrier. I thought she did somewhat well (compared to the others). Question- Has a Miss USA ever won Miss Universe? |

The most recent Miss USA to win the Miss Universe title is my hometown girl Brook Mahealani Lee in 1997. In fact, it was because of Brook that my alma mater hosted Miss Universe in 1998. Some of you might remember her -- she was the Miss Universe after "the Miss Universe who got fat". When asked in her interview what she would do if she became Miss Universe, Brook said she'd eat everything...twice. |
