Coincidences

This thread is about coincidences that occur during our Greek experiences.

I will list two that happened to me. First, when I went away to college I was not sure just what to bring or pack up to go with me. I did, however manage to pack a beaded and sequined black evening bag. I pulled it out in time for my very first formal and I'm sure my jaw dropped wide open - the sequins were in the shape of -- arrows!!! There was no way that anyone could have planned a bigger surprize. What if I'd pledged another house, other than Pi Phi, with another symbol? No one in my immediate family had ever been Greek before as far as I knew, and I'm not sure if my mother or my best friend (an Alpha Phi) gave it to me. But I used it for every formal after that, and I still have it.

Secondly, years ago my boss chose me and a coworker for a special project, stating, "I need two dependable, level-headed young women to do this." So for most of the summer I sat next to this girl, working away. One day I leaned over to read the Greek letters on her necklace, which she had never worn before. Her letters were ... my letters. We were both Pi Phis, and neither one of us had known it.

What are your Greek coincidences? :)

RaggedyAnn 07-08-2008 08:32 PM

I've always loved ladybugs as a kid.

My Mom decorated my room with a big picture of Raggedy Ann above my head when I was little. The book was also one of my favorites.

indygphib 07-08-2008 08:43 PM

I loved the book Goodnight Moon as a kid, and I liked pink carnations.

sarahsmilehawk 07-08-2008 09:05 PM

My high school mascot was a lion, and I've always liked them. So having Alphie for a mascot was perfect!

Oh! And I went to Arizona State freshman year and didn't rush. I had a Kappa friend, a Pi Phi roommate, some DG and KD acquaintances... Then I transferred to Kansas, went through recruitment and went ADPi. Not long after, I found out that two of my ASU friends were new Alphas!

Scandia 07-08-2008 09:15 PM

One of my best friends likes penguins a lot.

One of my favorite characters is identified with a white rose.

The island where my father's family comes from is famous for manufacturing artificial pearls.

And I did not pick Theta Phi Alpha for any of these reasons. My intuition told me something was special about this organization- and I clicked with its members so well, that I am delighted that they welcomed me as an AI.

I've never told this story on GC before....

My older half-brother and I were raised separately. I was raised by my mom alone, he was raised by both of his parents. I have a less than ideal relationship with my father and I do not know his other children. But I always knew my brother's name. I stopped trying to reach out to my father about six years ago. I gave up any hope that I would ever know him or my siblings. He just didn't want that.

Last year, I was visiting a website for a grad chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in Baltimore. Scrolling through the names of the members, I saw the name of my brother, middle initial and all. I called the chapter president, who I'm friendly with, and he pretty much confirmed that this guy was who I thought it was.

Long story short, I connected with my brother after 28 years because we both pledged alumni chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha. And he is a very nice guy.

I loved elephants and collected them long before I knew many regarded it as the UNOFFICIAL "symbol/mascot" of Delta. I wore red all the time, too.

There are quite a few times that I have needed someone for something unrelated to Delta and, while or after assisting me, the person and I discovered we are Sorors and/or that we had met before. This has happened in-person and also when we communicated via phone or email. One time in particular, I needed to see the familiar smile and get the familiar hug. :)

I know what you mean about half-siblings because I got em too. Maybe one of these days I'll meet up with them again...who knows?

Thanks for sharing that story!

Senusret I 07-08-2008 09:46 PM

It was my pleasure to share it. :) It shall be my one warm fuzzy for 2008.

My mom made me a Raggedy Ann doll (and Andy) when I was younger that I absolutely loved

But then, I'm a Leo and have always associated with lions, but I didn't go ADPi

I was given a last minute tour of campus by a girl who would later by my Zeta sister! She was so sweet & just seemed to love the college - that tour helped make my decision.

Leslie Anne 07-09-2008 02:39 AM

I wrote about two coincidences in my retro thread but I'll post them here too. The first person I met at the University of Maryland (during orientation) ended up being my KD sister.

The second thing happened during Rush. After a long night I got on a shuttle to head back to my dorm and a girl I didn't know said, "Hi, Lady" to me. I knew she was in a sorority but I didn't know which one. Later I found out she was a "KD Lady." I don't know why she called me Lady though. Other people call me Lady too. My aunt never calls me Leslie: it's always Lady.

About 6 months ago I decided to hire a professional organizer. I went to the National Association of Professional Organizers website and entered all the things I needed into this form they have and about 50 organizers popped up in my results. I started looking at all their different websites and finally found one that felt right. I emailed the woman and set up an appointment. When she arrived at my home we went into my office and she quickly noticed all the Kappa Delta stuff. She said, "OMG are you a KD? I am too!" Yep, I can pick out a sister. ;)

tld221 07-09-2008 03:34 AM

man, ive got no warm and fuzzy coincidences right now. but on Thursday my chapter is throwing a social with some Kappas. we have 7 founders, they have 10, our event is on 7/10.

ok, hold the tomatoes! its all i got right now!

ree-Xi 07-09-2008 08:53 AM

I remember when I first started pledging AXiD, telling my mom about several coincidences; I was convinced that it was fate!

1. Alpha Xi Delta's open motto is "The pen is mightier than the sword". I have always been a writer by hobby, and my first college minor was Creative Writing (my major was Theatre). When I transfered as a junior, I changed my major to English with a concentration in Journalism. After graduation, I spent several years writing as a job. To this day, I continue to write, and am now working on a few projects that might be produced.

2. AXiD's philanthropy at the time was Respiratory Health. I happen to have Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma, two diseases affecting the lungs.

3. Pink roses. I can't tell you how much pink I have in my world, at 5, 18, and now.

4. At initiation... well let's just say that some things are more than coincidence!

DSTRen13 07-09-2008 10:02 AM

I pledged OPhiA while I was the president of another org on campus, AIESEC, and one of the members of AIESEC was the president of OPhiA. Later, having been president of AIESEC very unexpectedly helped out my Delta line. Random.

My grandmother has collected Raggedy Ann dolls for a long time, and since I pledged OPhiA, it's been fun because now I'm always on the look out for dolls for her, for me, and for sisters, chapters, and events. I am all about Raggedy Ann, and it's nice to be able to share that with my grandmother :)

WhiteDaisy128 07-09-2008 10:13 AM

I can't help but feel it's all a little more than coincidence...but here we go:

1. When I was in HS, I was very involved in the NJROTC program at my school...I even wore and anchor necklace.

2. I had no interest in going Greek in college...until I learned that DG was colonizing my junior year. My mom was a DG.

3. NCSU gave DG a bid to colonize 2 months after my mom was diagnosed with cancer.

4. My mom pinned me at initiation 4 months before her death. I truly think she knew I would be okay because I had the support of such amazing sisters.

OleMissGlitter 07-09-2008 10:28 AM

My entire childhood I always had this huge panda bear. Here is a pic of me with my panda! And you know I didn't even know I was a legacy to AOII when I went through rush because I never asked my grandmother! Since she never mentioned Greek Life I never asked! So I guess it was fate that I picked AOII because they sure didn't know I was a legacy! I know I was shocked when she sent me her mother's AOII badge from 1924!

When I was going through Recruitment I stayed with my aunt and uncle (instead of living in the dorms like most) and had to ride the bus to and from their house each day. On the way home sometime in the middle of the week, I was talking to another PNM about Recruitment and an older lady on the bus overheard us. She asked us if we were going through Recruitment at UW, to which we replied yes, and she said "oh, I'm an Alpha Xi Delta from UW". She said some other stuff too, but I can't remember what now. I remember thinking "Okay...that's nice...why are you telling us", but lo and behold, I ended up at AXiD!

I never found out who that lady was - I should ask around and see if I can figure it out.

I think that is AWESOME you pledged your mom's GLO before she passed away-that is incredible. I bet she's looking down happy knowing you have a great support system. What a great story-it brightened my day! :)

The first week of school, I was with a few of my guy friends who ended meeting up with a girl a year older that went to their high school who I did not know and she took us to a party.
During rush, I saw the girl and recognized her and at bid night she came up to me and was like you're that girl that went out with me and those guys that first week of school. haha
We have bonded ever since, and now shes my pledge mom and one of my best friends.

My mom sent me a box for valentine's day and she stuffed this ladybug pillow in the box. She had no idea that our unofficial mascot is a ladybug!

Psi U MC Vito 07-09-2008 12:03 PM

About the only coincidence I have is the two of the first people I met at my school ended up being brothers of mine. It was pretty cool to rush and relize they were Psi Us.

RU OX Alum 07-09-2008 01:08 PM

Well, the fall semester of seinor year there was some drama one night, about which i don't recall, and so mine and a good buddy's/brother's response to that was to get wasted...so anyway we ended up at taco bell, with me, his girlfriend that it took twenty minutes for us to convience us to drive us there, and she gets like one taco and a small drink. I forget what we got but the total was $18.56. Theta Chi was founded at Norwich in the year 1856. We were excited.

TrojanWoman 07-09-2008 02:35 PM

My whole life my mom and I have loved Dolphins and my room growing up had a dolphin theme.

LucyKKG 07-09-2008 03:42 PM

Hmm, I dunno if this counts, but my dad LOVES irises (ok, I do, too) and he has about 300 different kinds. They're EVERYWHERE. He sends me cards with irises on them sometimes now and makes a joke about Kappa.

gtdxeric 07-09-2008 04:17 PM

My big brother lived in the same room his freshman year as I did my freshman year, two years later.

VandalSquirrel 07-09-2008 05:30 PM

There are quite a few random pictures of me with squirrels in the park as a child. I remember going to the arboretum and feeding them peanuts as well as the ducks bread. My grandmother also had a record she played for me that was a recording of "Squirrel Nutkin" when I would visit her.

Now there are pictures of my nephew with squirrels in the park, so if he ever marries an Alpha Gam those are so coming out at the wedding.

KSUViolet06 07-09-2008 06:50 PM

Fall of freshman year, there was a PX who was also my orientation instructor (let's call her Megan) who became my friend and tried to get me to sign up for recruitment. She would talk about her sorority all the time, so I signed up but changed my mind at the last minute and withdrew my app the week before.

I never figured out which of the sororities Megan was in because when she taught orientation she was a PX so she never mentioned her sorority by name. Even after that, since she was teaching, she didn't wear letters or a lavaliere or anything so I had no clue.

Next semester, I got a phonecall from Megan (who was on PHC Exec), asking if I wanted my info to be put on the list of girls who withdrew from recruitment but are still interested in sororities. Every sorority gets the list and sororities can contact them and invite them to COB events. I said no.

Fast forward to spring of sophomore year. I decide to check out COB at Sigma. Guess who was there? Yep. Megan, and she was one of the recruitment chairs. I ended up joining and she was my Pearl Pal.

WaterChild 07-09-2008 07:46 PM

I wore olive green shorts and a white top on the first day of recruitment.

Psi U MC Vito 07-09-2008 07:48 PM

KSU. Is Pearl Pal what you call the big sisters?

chitownxo 07-09-2008 08:26 PM

Until I was about 6, my parents, brothers, and I lived with my grandparents in Chicago. My best friend then was named Eileen. Her father was really into home movies and he always shot a lot of film. Eileen gave me a stuffed owl for my 5th birthday. Her family eventually moved to a northern suburb, my family moved to the southern suburbs. We lost touch, but I kept my Owl.

Cut to move-in day at WIU. Mom, Dad & I are stuffing our faces at Wendys when I hear someone squeal, "Nancy?!" My mom looks up and hugs this woman...Eileen's mom. Our dads shake hands, and our moms look at each other and her mom says, "Don't you two remember, you used to play in the sandbox together?" We both shook our heads. Then my mom says, "Eileen gave you your owl." Still didn't remember her, but I thanked her again for the owl.

I rushed (it was rush back then) in the fall and joined Chi Omega. She rushed in the spring and joined Chi O as well. I was her secret sister. We kept telling everyone we went way back, and we became known as the "Sandbox Buddies"

Eileen wound up running our Senior Sendoff. After all of the wills were read, she dims the lightsand turns on the tv. Her father had transferred some of the old Super 8 movies onto VHS, and our Chapter sisters got to see Eileen and I as 4-year olds at the park. Too cute!

KappaKittyCat 07-09-2008 09:38 PM

My favorite earrings, a gift from my mother, have tiny fleur-de-lis dangling from the ends. I didn't notice 'til I wore them to my first Kappa formal.

rufio 07-10-2008 12:37 AM

my best friend from 6th grade ended up as my big brother.

The guy who started my chapter (at ASU) went to the same highschool as me. he graduated from highschool 7 years before I did. i found this out after i joined.

a friend from highschool, not a good friend, kind of like an acquaintence, became a DU at San Jose State. I didnt find out until we ran into each other at Regional Conference.

PM_Mama00 07-10-2008 09:13 AM

Back in 2000 my next door neighbor had a party after his homecoming. His sister is my age and invited me over to have some drinks while she watched after festivities. Some girl went into her grandma's old room with her boyfriend. We wanted to get them out of there so they sent me and I walked in on the girl making out with her boyfriend. A year later that girl went through rush and I found out it was her. She's now my lil sis and has been my best friend for 7 years.

My uncle has two nieces, one by marriage (Beverly) and one biological (me). When I was in the Adelphean for our version of the Sisters of the Year award, Bev called me for the first time (she's something like 20 years older than I) to say that she was an ADPi, too! Further coincidence: the mother of one of the ADPis on GC went to school with Bev.

It still irks my uncle that his step-granddaughter went to a school without ADPi. :D

SCogs18 07-13-2008 02:24 AM

Sheep

When I was young my mom gave me a little gum ball creature, it was a sheep. I've collected these little gum ball animals ever since. Now, 10 years later, I am a member of the Sheep Family!
