Since it's a little slow... my recruitment story!

So I've been lurking for awhile, reading the always-entertaining recruitment threads, and obviously since it's the summer they've died down a bit. So I decided to tell mine so you "addicts" can get your fix! This is a "retro" thread-- I was a PNM in 2005, but I remember many details of my experience, and can't wait to share them with you!

First, a little background...I grew up in the South, and both of my lovely parents attended an SEC school for undergrad and grad, and were both members of the Greek system (they didn’t know each other in college, they met way later!). Every fall since I can remember (probably 2 years old was the earliest they’d let me go), my family and I have been going to the home football games of my parents’ beloved alma mater. Every Saturday home game of every fall we’d spend cheering on our favorite team (I don’t want to give too much away!).

After nearly every game, I asked if we could take a drive by/walk around the fraternities and sororities. I picked my mom’s brain about her “rush” process and all her stories, imploring her to remember all the details! I have an amazing mother: she was secretary of her pledge class, philanthropic chair, Treasurer of Panhellenic, and VP of her chapter senior year! Needless to say, I was raised on the idea that being a member of a GLO was a significant and worthwhile (and indispensable!) part of college. I could sing the Greek alphabet, I knew which of my mom’s adult friends where in which houses, how she and her room mate/best friend ended up at different houses that were on different streets but shared a backyard…I even wore my mom’s old “jersey” (complete with stains and holes haha) with her letters on it as a pajama shirt!

Throughout my childhood/teens years I assumed that I too would attend this school. However, I ended up at a very cold, northern school (!!!) with a strong Greek system (thank goodness!). I was probably one of the first PNMs to register for recruitment. To my surprise, recs were not required, nor even “not required but strongly suggested” at this school! Additionally, there were a few chapters on this campus that I was not as familiar with (less of a presence in the SEC), so I was excited to see what they were all about! After checking on the Panhel website (before I even got to campus in the fall), to my and mother’s delight, her GLO had a chapter at my future school—there was still a chance I could be my mom’s “sister” after all!

At my school (now my alma mater, I graduated in May! Ahh!), there is deferred recruitment. The year I went through, there was a blizzard and the wind chill factor was in the negative teens (!!!). I was thoroughly unprepared for a northern, winter recruitment! That week I sincerely was jealous of my already-Greek friends down south who had rushed in the suffocating, oppressive heat in the fall! Without further ado, these are the chapters at my school:

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Xi Delta
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Sigma Delta Tau

I am thinking of doing Care Bears for code names, because I grew up with them, love them, and I really think the qualities they all represent really vibe with the spirit of being Greek!

The next installment will be coming soon! I just need to take a trip down memory lane and remember some details!

AlphaXi_Husky 07-08-2008 07:53 PM

I am dying for Recruitment stories to start, so thanks for filling void! Can't wait to read where you ended up!

tld221 07-08-2008 09:48 PM

yes, i havent done a retro thread in a while. bring it on!

and w00t for 2005!

spirited*pnm 07-08-2008 10:05 PM

I’m glad people are enjoying it so far! Here is my code, since I know many people enjoy picking one to root for! And of course it’s a given that they are not in the same order as the chapters I listed:

Birthday Bear
Grumpy Bear
Bedtime Bear
Friend Bear
Secret Bear
Tenderheart Bear
Funshine Bear
Wish Bear
Love-a-Lot Bear
Share Bear
Laugh-a-Lot Bear
Good Luck Bear

I will try to post round one later tonight depending on how sleepy/awake I am! :o

Also, and this is complete speculation on my part, I believe the PNM who started this thread may go to my school (all 12 chapters are the same and at my school each chapter does a “story” at the end of the parties in the first round, as this PNM discussed).

WinniBug 07-08-2008 10:15 PM

WOW
12 sororities!
The 3 at my school don't seem to get enough interest to even bring a 4th on campus...I couldn't imagine a school with 12!!

AOII Angel 07-08-2008 10:37 PM

Ooooo! I think I know where you go!!

tld221 07-08-2008 10:47 PM

im rooting for Funshine bear!

SigKapCoug 07-08-2008 11:21 PM

I'll go for Secret bear, because secrets make sororities. ;)

LucyKKG 07-08-2008 11:28 PM

Go Laugh-a-lot Bear!

AlphaXi_Husky 07-09-2008 12:48 AM

I totally loved the Care Bears - and the Care Bear Cousins. Especially the lion guy...I wish I could remember his name.

My vote is for Tenderheart Bear!

piphiangel314 07-09-2008 12:51 AM

I'm going for Grumpy Bear. I always go for the underdog. =) And I just sort of assumed (quite possibly wrong) that Grumpy Bear will be the underdog.

spirited*pnm 07-09-2008 12:51 AM

Braveheart Lion! I have a baby blanket of him painting a rainbow :D

I'm still working on my next update... it's turning into a bit of a novel!

Totally Braveheart Lion! I loved him.

And I don't mind reading a novel... :)

I like Bedtime Bear and I'm excited to read more!

spirited*pnm 07-09-2008 10:03 AM

I hope you have a large block of time...this is quite long!

I also want to use code names for some prominent people in my story. “Amy” and “Lauren” are two friends who were not SuperhardcoreEnthusiasticCrazy about rushing as I was, but with a tiny bit of convincing I got Lauren to sign up, and with significantly greater effort, Amy decided to go too (for the “experience,” of course). “Kristen” was my closest girl friend at school so far, we lived in the same dorm. Kristen and I had met lots of Greeks out at night and on the weekends. We talked about recruitment a lot. We walked past the sororities often, and she would often look admiringly at Funshine Bear (attractive house!), which also had a chapter at a university which her best friend from home attended (this bff was also going through deferred rush!); I think they (misguidedly) decided they could try ending up at the same place. Kristen was also a legacy, but to a different chapter, Good Luck Bear, which was a respected and influential house on campus. “Nicole,” and “Mackenzie” are 2 girls from my PX group, and “Katie” is my PX!

The first day/round are the open houses, where we visit all 12 chapters.
The second round, where we visit a max. of 9 chapters split between 2 days, is house tour/philanthropy round.
The third round is skits (my favorite!), where we visit a max. of 6 chapters.
The last day is preference, where we visit a max. of 3 chapters.

During winter break, my mom and I went shopping for “northern” rush clothes— seersucker, sundresses, and strappy sandals would not fly for this school in January! I got a few new coats (not “new” to replace old, but new for me completely!), dressy boots, wool skirts and slacks, etc. I got my hair trimmed and a manicure so I looked put-together, I wasn’t sure how primped PNMs would or wouldn’t be at my school! I know I always appreciate when a PNM explains her outfit for each round in these stories, so of course I will!

The night before the first round all the PNMs attend an information session. We meet our PX and groups, get recruitment booklets, and watch a hilarious skit put on by all the PXs about the do’s and dont’s of recruitment. This just made me even more excited to get started!

Here we go with… OPEN HOUSE DAY!

This day was casual, jeans (SO casual!!!) and a sweater. I wore jeans (haha) and a black narrow-ribbed cashmere sweater with a purple tank underneath (just for a splash of color!)

Birthday Bear
I still remember that this was definitely my first chapter of the day. This chapter was the newcomer on campus, and was on the smaller side membership-wise. The girls were sweet and nice (I usually hate the adjective “nice,” but here it is totally appropriate), but the conversations were a bit awkward. Somehow, guns and shooting came up… I can talk about ANYTHING and make it seem natural, so I don’t know if/think these girls could tell I thought it was a strange topic of conversation. I mean, I have done target shooting/used rifles before, but it just seemed a little off. At this house, I kind of had the feeling that it was my job to make them feel more comfortable rather than vice versa. Although the topics were a bit strange, the conversation flowed.

Grumpy Bear
This was known as a top chapter on campus, and they have a bit of a party reputation. Nicole and I were seated together with two sisters. I was talking to sister A, and Nicole was talking to sister B, and we were occasionally talking as a group. I was really hitting it off with sister A, who left to go grab some hot chocolate for all of us, leaving sister B, Nicole, and I doing a 2-on-1, which ended up being OK for awhile…but then awkward because sister A never came back! (Maybe this is touchy to say, but I think it is always strange to be doing 2-on-1s with one sister and 2 PNMs, because at the end of the day, the PNMs are competing with each other.) After their end-of-party cute story (which was HILARIOUS by the way), sister A finally showed up (hot chocolate-less!!), which I didn’t really know what to make of. My first instinct was that it was a bit rude, but maybe she had a bathroom emergency or something. I really wanted to give sister A/this chapter the benefit of the doubt because we clicked, but still.

Bedtime Bear
LOVE LOVE LOVE (cue Beatle’s “All You Need Is Love”)! These girls were so warm and welcoming. I remember really clicking with one sister—we talked about classic rock and Led Zeppelin, and other random fun things. She seriously was like my mirror image in personality! She was very animated and enthusiastic. I was actually disappointed when the next sister came over to talk and she had to leave! The other girls I talked to here were cute and friendly too, but that one sister still really stands out in my mind!

Friend Bear
I think this was my favorite house of this round of parties! I loved them! While they do have a reputation for being “Barbie”-esque (I know, I know), I thought they were warm and really interested in what I had to say. I talked to Amy at the end of the day (who comes from a “hippie-ish,” “granola” type family/background) and despite their stereotype, even she loved them too and said the sister that walked her to the door gave her a big hug! So much for stereotypes! I remember talking to a huge group of awesome seniors, and one from my home state (which is pretty rare at my school)! Yay! She was hilarious in a straight-up/sarcastic way (as much as is appropriate during rush), while still being approachable. I remember them telling me how they all lived together in a house (“annex”) off-campus that was passed down to sisters in the next grade each year. I remember wanting to be in this chapter and wanting to get to live in the “senior” house—it seemed like they all had so much fun together! Their story at the end of the party was really funny.

Secret Bear
This house was great. They have a reputation for being the “sporty” chapter on campus, and I actually ended up talking to a sister who was on crutches because of a soccer injury! My senior year of high school I also was on crutches for a few days for a soccer injury, so we bonded over that. However, this girl was slightly tom-boyish, and while I love playing and watching sports (woo college football!), I’m definitely on the girly side. The next girl I talked to was an over-the-top girly girl, so I guess I met the two extremes of this chapter! She was very bubbly and sweet, and I remember we talked about fashion (her shoes were adorable, I was slightly jealous the sisters were inside and got to wear cute shoes instead of “practical” ones for trudging in the several feet of snow). I liked this chapter too, although I wanted to meet more sisters to get a better feel for the rest of the members.

Tenderheart Bear
This was my legacy chapter! Let me start off by saying my mom is not the type to pressure me into anything, but she always encourages me to keep an open mind and form my own opinions, and her advice about recruitment was no different. This chapter’s physical house is not a very attractive structure, which was a little disappointing. Unfortunately, I felt extremely uncomfortable at this chapter. I so desperately wanted a few good things about this chapter to report back to my mom, but it was tough. The sister I talked to had electric blue eyeshadow and frosty pink lipstick, and she talked badly about a professor she had had for a class that I was pre-enrolled for, which I thought was rude and really rubbed me the wrong way. Not a good vibe. When I called my mom later that night and told her, she understood that it wasn’t a good fit for me, yet felt sad because the sorority she loves was struggling on my campus.

Funshine Bear
I remember this house being decorated so beautifully! This was the house that Kristen had admired from afar during fall semester, and I was excited to meet them. The first sister I talked to actually looked like a petite/mini version of someone I went to high school with, so I felt like I knew her for years! She was sweet and genuine, although seemed a little “innocent” to me (not sure if that’s the right word for what I’m trying to describe); maybe she was a little nervous or had a “recruitment persona” on. The other sister I remember talking to was AWESOME--really spunky and funny. We definitely clicked, but she kept asking me something inappropriate (hard to explain…I was a member of a campus organization that put on events/concerts and she was trying to get me to reveal aka leak confidential information, but I’m not sure she realized this wasn’t OK and was probably trying to make conversation). Overall, I liked them. I wanted to see more.

Wish Bear
I don’t remember a lot of specifics from conversations at this chapter. I remember they seemed like big partiers (I don’t mean for this to sound negative—I mean more along the lines of fun/rowdy/outgoing). The conversations flowed and I had a generally good vibe. I do remember their recruitment chair seeming very put-together and poised, which I liked!

Love-A-Lot Bear
I remember this house having an unusual set up: you walk in the front door, and there’s like NO SPACE/standing room whatsoever (this was NOT a foyer, try along the lines of a mid-size shower stall) and the staircase is directly in front of you. Anyway, the girls in this house seemed REALLY spirited, perky, and super nice. I remember not being sure about this chapter. The girls were really bubbly, but I didn’t really “click” with anyone; I felt like we were on different wavelengths or they didn’t “get” me or something. I know this expression isn’t exactly right, but it may help communicate the feeling I had: I felt like, mentally, “we were two ships passing in the night.” I needed to meet more sisters.

Share Bear
A girl from one of my classes fall semester was in this chapter. I knew because she often wore her letters to class (which was excruciatingly at 8am Mon-Thurs!). I thought she was pretty cool, but I knew of the stereotype for this chapter, and wasn’t sure I’d fit in—many of the girls know each other from home beforehand (which totally put things in perspective for me thinking about out-of-staters doing an SEC recruitment, but admittedly not as extreme at my school!). I actually enjoyed my time here. If I remember correctly, I think I may have met the president or incoming president. Sorry I can’t remember many specifics, but I do remember that the “tent talk”/PNM buzz was that they had the best hot chocolate! I think I ended up liking them more than I thought I would.

Laugh-A-Lot Bear
Ok, this house takes the cake for most spirit/enthusiasm! They had a brand newish (haha) house, and it was gorgeous inside! The couch I was on was really comfy too. The conversations here were more of the same basics that can be expected from the first round, nothing really stood out, but I did have a good time.

Good Luck Bear
Last house of the day, finally! (All the other chapters are out of order, I only remember where I visited first and last!) I was exhausted at this point…and tired and freezing with inches of water/melted slush squishing in my boots, and it was already pitch black outside (I never realized how going back to standard time DRASTICALLY :eek:changes the daylight up north)!! This was Kristen’s legacy chapter. I was a little unsure about this one too, many of these girls come from the same areas and know each other (they do a lot of who-do-you-know/do-you-know-so-and-so here), but I was relieved when I met someone from my home state! This was a relief because I was so tired, and made me perk up a bit. It actually turned out that her family knows the most obnoxious, full-of-himself student from my high school, and they don’t like him either (seriously, one year in history class our teacher was handing back papers and had accidentally stapled his to mine. The last sentence of his essay was, “and this led to the birth of XXXX. Obviously, great things are to come of him.” My mom and I were just speechless and disgusted. :eek:Sorry for the tangent.) Anyway, I’m not big on talking badly about other people, especially during rush, but it was the end of the day and that’s what came up. She was quite stylish and sophisticated. She was the only sister I met though, so I needed to see more….

So at the end of the first round we went back to meet with our PX groups to rank our preferences. Katie, the PX, was hilarious and always upbeat, and kept our spirits high!
I placed 9 houses as #1,
#2 Love-A-Lot
#3 Birthday
and #4 Tenderheart (I was disappointed, I wish this chapter had been a better experience! Poor mom:()

I'm going to root for Love-A-Lot bear since it is the one I actually own. :p

LOL at gun talk at rush. Welcome to the North :)

AlphaXi_Husky 07-09-2008 10:42 AM

It's too bad Tenderheart wasn't as good of an experience for you as you had hoped, but it sounds like you had a good first day overall!

Now more, more, more! :)

piphiangel314 07-09-2008 11:12 AM

I love this thread!

I'm still pulling through for Grumpy Bear... despite the hot chocolate incident. :)

baci 07-09-2008 11:22 AM

Keep it coming!!!

ComradesTrue 07-09-2008 12:06 PM

Great job so far! You include enough information to differentiate the chapters and keep things interesting, but not so much detail that you bog things down.

Fun and easy to read. I am certainly interested.

WinniBug 07-09-2008 12:18 PM

1. I'm jealous that y'all can serve hot chocolate at recruitment!
2. I wish our school had deferred recruitment
3. I read the recruitment story you linked to...do you not have "hotboxing" rules? She said she was sitting around talking to 5 sisters....
4. Our now-president had a few "mudding" conversations at recruitment last year :-)
No Cheer Bear :( So I'm going to root for Good Luck Bear! :-)

angelove 07-09-2008 12:28 PM

I'm just picturing a Birthday Bear with an AK-47 pointed toward the candles on the cake ...

Great story!

APhi4Ever 07-09-2008 12:31 PM

Yay for Bedtime Bear being in your top choices!

We most certainly DO have hotboxing rules! I was a recruitment officer for my chapter for two years, and I believe that a max. of 2 sisters per PNM, with a 3rd sister allowed to stop by/say hello, but the one of the 3 must be on her way quickly. The vague language of this rule is actually quite amusing. Friend Bear was actually well-known for hotboxing; I should mention that this was perhaps why I liked them so much first round, they really made PNMs feel special! I am not sure how strictly this rule was enforced when I was a freshman, however. Not that it is STRICTLY enforced now, but chapters are aware of it and hopefully train their members not to do it.

And that's great about the mudding convos! A conversation like that would certainly put any PNM at ease who was worried about sororities being too prim and proper!

MaggieXi 07-09-2008 06:04 PM

Thank god for a recruitment story fix!

AHHHH I feel so much better now.

Benzgirl 07-09-2008 06:14 PM

I love the Tent Talk about Share Bear

Quick, quick, come back! I need a fix!

spirited*pnm 07-09-2008 09:48 PM

Round 2, Part 1

So now for round 2, HOUSE TOURS! This round we could visit a maximum of 9 chapters split between 2 days.

My outfit for this day: chocolate brown tailored slacks (front crease haha), a slate/faded blue-grey ribbed turtleneck, and brown suede and brown-darkgrey-with-flecks-of-rusty-brown-orange tweed mary jane heels with a wing tip style boundary between the suede and the tweed-like material! LOVE THEM!
We had to carry our shoes and other things with us so that we could change out of our boots. This was tough on me b/c changing outside is a challenge when balancing on one high-heeled foot on an icy path, and once you get all changed you have to freeze outside while waiting to be let inside!

On with the story!
I woke up bright and early and walked with Kristen down to our respective PX meeting places. IT WAS FREEZING. My goodness, the frigid air shocked me so. I was wearing a kind of light down mini jacket underneath my bigger coat, and I was still chilled to the bone! I was thrilled when Katie handed me my schedule for the next two days and…I had a full schedule! That warmed me up a bit ☺ Although, I was curious to see which chapters I wouldn’t be going back to…I scanned the list and noticed that Tenderheart and Birthday were not on my list…OK, so who was the third? GRUMPY BEAR. Hmm. I was slightly miffed because I felt like they were the ones who dropped the ball (which was esp. disappointing because this shouldn’t happen at a strong chapter IMO!!). I got over it quickly though because I still had chapters that I had so enjoyed the day before!

Friend Bear
My first party of the day, yay! I loved the 2 tour guides I had at this house; one of them was one of the storytellers from round 1! These 2 girls seemed to have good chemistry with each other and really seemed into their sorority/recruitment/living-in/Greek life. I loved the first floor of their house, but only remember one of the bedrooms I saw. It was cute (and immaculate. Like model home un-lived in. Everything seemed to have a perfect place, like OCD much?). My conversations here were decent, but not as exciting and free-flowing as the previous day. At some points during the party there were AT LEAST five girls sitting around me talking. I remember thinking it was a little weird when a new girl would bump in and ask the same questions the other 5-6 girls sitting there had already heard the answer to…I didn’t want to sound too rehearsed but it was hard to avoid! The (gorgeous) president or recruitment chair came over to say hello too. I was the last one out of this house because I had issues getting my boots on (geez, I’m usually very put-together and suave!)…and then I slipped on the icy front door threshold/step. But I caught myself, phew. I left enjoying the tour/house, a little ambivalent about my convos, and unsure/worried if I had made an impressive enough impression on them. I hope they would invite me back!

LAUGH-a-Lot Bear
I spoke with the most bubbly, firecracker, mile-a-minute-mouth sister (or person) ever! I like to think that I’ve got the gift of gab, but this girl was a bit intense for me! While it was a 2-on-1 with another PNM (who was a sweetheart), there was better chemistry with the three of us than there was at Grumpy Bear the day before. Also, instead of feeling competitive or like I needed to “turn it up” in the 2-on-1, I felt more relaxed and less pressure. We talked about hometowns and traveling. I also met the younger biological sister of one if the girls I had spoken with the day before. This house was decorated very traditionally, with many large area rugs. The upstairs rooms and hallways were seriously brand-spanking new. While that is always nice, it didn’t have as cozy a feel as the downstairs did. I like a house with a little history/character! Overall, I had a positive impression.

LOVE-a-Lot Bear
Just when I thought I had met the spunkiest most energetic person on earth, the sister I remember speaking with at this chapter didn’t even pause between sentences for air! It was tough to keep up with her (and kind if tiring!), but I did enjoy my time with her better than the girls I had met previously. I couldn’t tell if she was really SUPER DUPER INTERESTED in what I had to say, or turned up the charm this much for everyone. I don’t remember much from the house tour, but Little Miss Chatterbox made this house VERY memorable. This house bounced back from my mediocre impression during round 1, but these two extreme ends of the personality spectrum made me a little ambivalent about this chapter.

Good Luck Bear
Oh. Man. THIS was interesting… The girls in this chapter are generally sophisticated/fashionable; they are also known to come from relatively well-off backgrounds. I don’t want to sound too critical, but they flaunted it, and it completely turned me off. The sister I remember speaking with was at one time known as the hottest girl on campus—she had very distinctive features, had attended a prestigious preparatory school (not that that’s wrong, but the fact that she made sure everyone knew was a little off-putting). During our conversation, she name dropped, and “vacation area” dropped, restaurant dropped, hotel dropped (who knew), and any other kind of tacky “dropping” you can do without “accidentally” dropping your wallet and having wads of cash and credit cards burst forth from its seams. This girl’s attitude completely overshadowed the house tour, my other conversations, and any positive aspects I could have taken away from this party. A lady does not discuss her financial situation-- I don’t think she knew the definition of DISCRETION.

I must stop now to pack for a short trip I am taking tomorrow-Monday. I’m hoping I can finish the rest of Round 2 parties later tonight (or early this morning haha) so there isn’t a coup of rush thread addicts! You have my promise (and I don’t break promises!) that I will not abandon this thread!

AlwaysSAI 07-09-2008 10:23 PM

Love-a-lot!!!! <333

And yes, please don't leave us craving a fix all weekend! :)

Round 2, Part 2

I would NEVER leave you dry! This is a BIG juicy update to keep everyone sated for the weekend (I may have time to update, but I might be way busy/not sure about computer access). I bet no one's even awake, but then it will be like Christmas morning tomorrow!

Round 2, Part 2

The rest of the chapters!

Share Bear
Amy and I ended up at the same party! Not only that, we were seated together! This made things a lot more relaxed. It was the two of us, along with 2 sisters at a time. I liked this set up! The conversations don’t particularly stand out, but I remember mostly enjoying myself! UNTIL…this one sister came over. Who had absolutely no facial expressions. Did not communicate emotion whatsoever. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe she had just gotten botox?!?!?! It wasn’t only me, because I asked Amy later and she thought the same thing! So weird! Not that she was mean (maybe she was nervous), but it was so strange! This was the sister that dropped us off on the house tour (Amy and I got to go together!), and picked us up from it at the end. I didn’t want to let this one sister influence my impression of the house as a whole, but I wished we had ended on a better note! The actual house’s interior structure was pretty cool though.

Secret Bear
Ok I had an INCREDIBLE time here! One of the girls and I hit it off, I felt like we had known each other for years! I wanted her to be my big if I joined this house:D(a "lil" early to think that, but it was my rush wish!!)! Just an awesome, cool girl. Really with it, on the same wavelength, totally had a great back-and-forth animated, convo… you know the kind where you’re like, “omg! I totally know what you mean! EXACTLY! Blah blah blah,” but it doesn’t come off as ditzy because you two are so in-synch?! Seriously she was like my sorority soulmate. The time FLEW, and I didn’t want to leave (we kind of lingered towards the back of the group being funneled to the door)…however this may have backfired on me…

Bedtime Bear
This house and Secret Bear are the greatest distance apart of any two houses on my campus. Like WAY far. Through much sludge, snow, and ice. We have 15 minutes between parties, and there was this shuttle bus system (ha, this might give away the school, but please don’t say) which was absolutely ineffective. The bus didn’t stop in front of the houses and maintain a continuous loop, but had 4 stops and would do them only in a certain order, once at each stop (so like, what if you got on the bus at one stop and needed to go to a house that the bus just came from? Out of luck. Stupid system.) So I get out of Secret Bear and need to get to the bus stop that’s listed for that house (which is conveniently over 100 yards down the street). I get there. I RUN there. A PX posted there informs me and the other PNMs with me that we missed it by ~30 seconds. ARGH. :mad:So this other girl and I set off on the perilous journey ahead of us. Seriously, it was a treacherous trail. And I didn’t want to be cut from rush for being absent/late to a party. Oh dear god. And I really liked the Bedtime Bears too!! :oThis lovely PNM and I call our PXs and tell them to make sure Bedtime Bears know we are on our way. We got there maybe 20+ minutes into the round. I felt awful. Embarassed, apologetic, frustrated, and worried, with my fingers and nose about to fall off, and the rest of myself sweating because we RAN/slid down the slushy hills to get there! I honestly don’t remember much from this house because I was so flustered. This was an unusual feeling for me because it usually takes A LOT to get me upset. I didn’t know how this would affect my chances here, because every sister I talked to was REALLY cool. Cool in conversation, but cool enough to forgive some tardy PNMs? I guess I would find out the next day…
(This part of the story actually really made me sad to write. I know we always say “You’ll end up where you’re meant to!” and I LOVE the girls who ended up being my sisters—def the place for me!--, but I can’t help but think that things that were out of my control made me slip through the cracks or seem like an undesirable PNM at this chapter.)

Funshine Bear
Ok, after the fiasco with the commute from Secret to Bedtime, Funshine Bear totally cheered me up (how apropos)! LOVED every sister I met, my 2 tour guides were so memorable and totally “me.” I vividly remember standing in one of the rooms thinking how I wished I WERE these 2 sisters, who already knew of their secure place in this wonderful house (does anyone sympathize with this feeling)! One of the tour guides was so put-together and polished, she had khaki slacks on with a chartreuse/lime green silk ribbon used as a belt—I thought that was so cool! The other tour guide was so animated and slightly sarcastic and seemed really fun. I remember in this room she said she was the social chair and talked about events, and I just WISHED I could go to these events! I remember tons of shirts with letters laid across the beds and hoping that in a few days I could wear those shirts! I could see myself flinging down my books after class and shooting the breeze with my sisters in one of these cozy and inviting rooms! I think I had a permasmile :Dduring the entire tour! I felt so comfortable here, but still felt that I needed to make sure they remembered me. I loved them, but I worried if the feelings were reciprocal (after all, I had tried to primp and recover a bit from the last party, but I still felt like an exhausted mess). Would it be unrequited sorority love?

Wish Bear
Ok, the sister I talked to at this house was like my twin! We seriously looked so much alike! This was an interesting rotation: twin girl stayed with me the throughout the entire round, minus the house tour, and it was the 2nd sister who came over that would rotate. Every time a new sister came over she would comment on how alike we looked! Awesome! I hoped this meant that they could see me meshing well in the chapter!! Again, I remember thinking these girls were big partiers (from a slideshow they showed that had many of their chapter’s flower/mascot covering many hands, hmm.), yet their recruitment chair was so poised, proper, and eloquent! I could definitely see myself hitting it off with her/hanging out. I remember leaving this house with a good feeling, thinking that I could see myself being friends with a good number of sisters in the house!

At the end of this round, I ranked 6 chapters as #1, with
#2 Share
#3 Love-a-Lot
#4 Good Luck (I felt a little bad about trying to cut Kristen's legacy chapter, but we had already decided we didn't care about ending up at the same place or not.)
