Teachers: the names you will never name your own kids

Recently, I read a book in which a teacher said that there are many names that teachers--though they may love the names--will never give their own kids, due to awful stuff that their students with those names have done. This is true. I've talked to other teachers, including my husband, and they can tell you those names really fast! What are yours?

The ones that conjure up bad memories for me (and there were multiple mean kids named these):

80s: Chad, Jason, Shane
90s: Dakota, Dustin
now: Austin, Jaden

(And let me say that there were SIX Austins who lived in in-school suspension at our school last year)

Laurie

If I have a daughter I want her to be named Melissa or Jessica. First one to tell me what those names have in common gets a cookie.

carnation 07-08-2008 09:11 AM

LOL, teachers feel strongly about this; I've never gotten such a quick response after starting a thread. Let me add Dalton to my recent list, how could I have forgotten?

Double "s"? An "e", an "i" and an "a"?Keep the cookie - I'm getting into shape, and don't need the carbs!:)

No cookie for you, it has nothing to do with the structure of the names or anything.

Quala67 07-08-2008 10:18 AM

Melissa and Jessica -

Both titles of Allman Brothers songs!

I WANT MY COOKIE!!!

Chris, Christopher, Chrissy
Brooke
Patrick

I'm not going to give any son of mine a "J" name - It seems all my exes had a "J" name and I don't think there are any left! lol

carnation 07-08-2008 10:50 AM

My husband says that from last year alone, he could never name his kid:

Jeremy
Chad
Shuntae
Hunter

and he says don't get him going on years in the past.

Beat me to it! I once saw a cartoon of a very distraught looking teacher in a class picture, and the students' names Scot, Jennifer, Jennifer, Jennifer, Scott, Scott, Jennifer, Scott, Jennifer...

My personal "names to hate" from experience (and my apologies to those who have these names) are Jeffery and Christopher. I actually broke off a very serious relationship with a man who was insistent that his son would be named Jeffery.

Easy--

Dana
Julio
Kelsey
Maria
Pam

BUT - those are things they have in common. Just sayin'!

PeppyGPhiB 07-08-2008 12:36 PM

I'm not a teacher, but there are names of ex-boyfriends and mean kids I remember that have been stricken from my list:

Jason
Todd
Peter
Sean/Shawn/Shaun
Shaely
Blaine
Ashley

chitownxo 07-08-2008 12:40 PM

Boys:
Cage
James
Joseph
Justin
Marty
Matthew

Girls:
Amber
Brandi, Brandee, Brandy (not fine girls in my opinion)
Cassie
Kelly

Worst week of student teaching - having Brandi, Joseph, Justin, & Kelly sharing a table. There wasn't enough Tylenol in the world to let that disaster go on longer than 5 days.

When I was in fourth grade...in Ft. Walton Beach FL ;) *a very very long time ago*

There were FOUR Pam's in the class AND the teacher's name was Pam.

Pam F
Pam M
Pam S
Pam T
and Miss Vaughn.

DoctorD 07-08-2008 01:40 PM

Yes, I often said that the list for names NOT to name my kids was longer than the list TO name my kids.

names I did not consider:

Theo
Miranda
Joshua
Jennifer
Brandon

I know there were others, but these jump to mind very, very quickly. Too quickly.

DolphinChicaDDD 07-08-2008 02:13 PM

Flenzy, Jake, Melissa, Peter, Amanda

The rest of them, I'm sure I could get over. But those four, never. The others I seem to forget about after a few months.

WAIT...how did I not know this?

I was born and raised in Destin...the parents still live there (and are natives). It's quite possible that you were in school with some of my aunts and uncles.

I don't know what kind of crap the kid pulled, but Flenzy sounds baller as hell.

Although "Grandma Flenzy" is turd sandwich all the way.

epchick 07-08-2008 04:14 PM

Ok, so i'm not a teacher (although i'm thinking about it) but I will never name my children:

Girls:
Laura
Susie, Susan, Susanna, etc
Jennifer

Boys:
Sean, Shawn, etc
Aaron
Scott
Richard

Did you really have a student named Flenzy when you taught HS?

Daddy was an AF officer....he was stationed at Eglin AFB while I was in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade :). decades ago...decades ago.

We had the coolest babysitters :).....a HS junior named Nancy Neville was the one that pops into my head. She was so sweet to us.

My two best friends were Jody Scrivenor (sp?) and Renee Robinson :).

Amazing what you can remember as you get older :).

ZTAMich 07-08-2008 04:48 PM

Destiny, Christopher, Jahmirah, Nayalyn & Matthew. Tho they are unforgettable children!!

PeppyGPhiB 07-08-2008 05:17 PM

Who names their children these things? Flenzy? Cage?

AOII Angel 07-08-2008 05:24 PM

*crash*
I'm not a teacher, but from reading NICU films for 5 years, I'd say that I'd avoid any derivation of the words Destiny and Miracle. I've seen Ama-miracle, Shamiracle, LaDestiny, Plain ole Destiny and countless others. Sadly, most of these kids were in such bad shape that neither name applied.

carnation 07-08-2008 05:42 PM

How could I forget? Our school has been run ragged by Destinys and Devons. And since they sound alike, we've had at least 3 brother and sister pairs with those names.

f8nacn 07-08-2008 05:53 PM

Not a teacher, but when I worked @ a private school we had our share of students who consistently were sent to my office as a means of punishment:

Christopher
Edward
Krystal
Derrick
Brandon
Clifford

WannaBeAKA 07-08-2008 05:56 PM

Dalton
Sam
Jesse
Austin
Zach
Cassie (never met one that was personable and honest--from childhood neighbors to students!)
Shae
Kasey

Benzgirl 07-08-2008 07:04 PM

On the flip side, my sister in law named her first child after a little girl she loved while teaching pre-school: Lee Ann

A kid named Richard threw up on my lunch tray in the 2nd grade and ever since then I've hated every Richard I've met. Not sure if it's because I'm biased against Richards or just that they are all assholes.

My mom is a first grade teacher and she has had several hellish Dakotas.

Hey, a boy named Darius threw up on ME in Kindergarten! Can you believe I've never met another Darius in 23 or so years?

Coincidentally, I also despise every Richard I've met or taught. But if he goes by Rich, I surprisingly get along!

Yeah, the Richard curse doesn't extend to people named Rich, I've found. The evil resides in that extra -ard.

smiley21 07-08-2008 08:11 PM

Leah
Kaitlyn
Juan
Austin
Emma (and I really did like this name before)
Jared

He came in the year when I taught 8th grade. The sad thing is, he was Flenzy Junior.

I'd also add to the list "creative" spelling of names. Any name. Jessyka. Rian (Ryan) and a few others that I can't think of right now. Equally annoying where the kids named after cities. I've had a Chicago and Cleveland. My mom once had a student who was either Orlando Cleveland or Cleveland Orlando. She could never remember which city came first.
