Greek life question: Is 24 too old to rush a fraternity?
Hello everyone,
I am 24 years old and a Junior at my university studying pre-med. Don't ask me why I havent graduated yet, truth be told i get tired of having to explain that. I had previously changed my major and it was a while before I became DECISIVE about what I wanted to do career-wise. Anyway, I am writing because I have had interest in greek life since I started college. I DID get invited to rush one of the fraternities a couple years ago, but didnt go because I was not sure if I was ready (long story). But I have looked extensively into what greek life is all about (some of my relatives were greek in college) and have come across a lot of positive (and unfortunately negative) information. Nonetheless I'm still interested in the possibility, if there still is one. The question is, at 24 years old is it too late to be considered? I'm asking because I know that a lot of students join at 18 or 19 and some in their first semester in college. I'm not trying to brag (but it will sound like I am, I know) but I am very good looking, get good grades, athletic, I'm a member of the student government at my school, and I still LOOK like I'm about 15 or 16 ( no joke, I routinely get mistaken for a highschooler). Does any of this help or did I simply wait too long? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And thanks! P.s. -- some of you might ask my reason for wanting to join, and that's welcome, in short, I wish to maximise the rest of my undergrad experience, and help broaden my career chances, which I believe I will do either way, but again, this is still something of interest to me =) |
I say give it a try. You aren't that much older then some people I know who have pledged. Also it looks like you are very involved on campus which is always a plus.

Yes and for that matter, it's too old to be in college. If you even have to ask, it's because you know.

I'm planning on going into medical school and that will take time, everyone has their own timetable for these things. You don't have to judge. Honestly, I always thought 24 was still very young but I guess I was wrong =/ |

I hope you go to a school in San Fran. |

No wonder you won't say what fraternity you're in because you don't want them to find out you're spewing crap contrary to what greek life is supposed to be about. You're not a greek brother, you're a "fratboy", just the type that my greek friends hate. |

In ten years you'll be 34 and looking for your first job as a doctor. Even if he goes to law school he'll have already been practicing for probably 6 years (and be 2-4 years younger than you). Who's "going somewhere" again? Maybe if you are really serious about med school you would know you still have a very damn long time before you become a doctor. You still have 2 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school and 3-7 years of residency depending on what you want to do. And yes, I drink. Was that thought supposed to be going somewhere? Was it supposed to reflect badly on him? If so, maybe before you rush you should know that you're going to have a hard time finding many greeks, particularly guys, who don't. |
Edited because I'm embarassed for having an internet fight.

First of all no, I'm not gay, I dont understand what gave you that idea. And yes I already know it will be a while before I practice, where's the relevence in mentioning that? I am going to get into a good medical school, whether I go greek or not. and 2 - 4 years is not big age difference, so unless he is as smart as me which i HIGHLY doubt, I could probably run circles around him careerwise even if he finishes school first. It's not that he drinks, it's that he comes off as the type of guy that only cares about that. I know the type, these guys pass the prime of their lives before they are 30 and are nobody afterwards. I actually have a good opinion about the fraternity system, it's the few people that give it a bad name (like this jerk) that me, and my greek friends have a problem with. So think what you want, maybe if you saw what I look like, or what I'm capable of writing, or my tennis game, you'd be more impressed. But I'm done with you. |

Ok, so far I know that you think you're pretty, write like an insecure fool, and probably suck at tennis to be completely honest plus golf, squash and sailing are all infinitely frattier, you "new money" (oh wow, I know what it means) prick. Oh, and unless you're driving the McLaren models, you can get a much better car for your money than a Mercedes. If you want a foreign car that leaks oil and needs repairing twice a year at least get a Land Rover and set yourself apart from the brokers assistants, peasant. You would know that if you weren't so nouveau riche. |

And i DO drive an SLR McLaren, surprise surprise. And my tennis game is very good I use semi-Western grip and can smash like nobody's business, you probably couldnt even do that with the beginner's Eastern forehand. And the property I will inherit is worth more than what you'll make in your life. I KNOW I'm pretty, nothing gay about having a pretty face, just the face God gave me and girls seem to like it. Go back to your Ford pickups, bud light, nascar, and "Git r' done" how-to manuals teaching you how to build second rate motorcycles you could have bought for $500 at the lots on the "wrong" side of the tracks. I'd hate to see you miss out on a fun-filled day of talking with your friends about what "makes a true American man" and the "advantages" of looking like an unshaven, thick browed, ape who looks like he's been in prison for two years. I would be monumentally surprised if you were any different than that. So unless you have an IQ of over 140, can speak 4 languages, play four different instruments, and are planning embarking into politics, you are talking way out of your league. Auf Wiedersehen, Adios, Hey då, and good bye, you nobody. =) |

But now that we got that out of the way, I still think you suck. I'll be within a few months of finishing LAW SCHOOL when I'm your age. That age diference is more than you not knowing what you want to do. Oh, and medicine isn't exactly a great transition into politics, it worked for Frist not because he was a doctor, but because his family owned the largest hospital firm in the nation. And once again, I don't care about tennis. Golf, sailing and power boating, bird hunting and saltwater fishing are my sports. Oh, and I call bulls**t. Anyone with a McLaren is already in a fraternity through a multiple legacy (or if he's new money, through reccomendations of pals at the country club). Even if that wasn't the case they wouldn't be asking for advice on an internet forum. We've all seen Van Wilder brosephus, maybe next time see if you can slide by basing your life story on PCU instead. Because at my house we're looking for "Definite Mayflower material." |
