Walk To 2010!

Is anyone else committing themselves to the challenge?

If you weren't present at Convention, with Tampa being 1000 miles from IHQ, they challenged us to walk 1000 between now and the Convention!

I think while I am out doing sales calls today I will grab a pedometer and get walking...We averaged it out to 1.3 mi./day while sitting at convention...which is only around 20 minutes of my day.

To get logged on the site (Which I am always excited about a new website to throw into my rotation...LOL)

btw, there is already a facebook group!

Alpha Gam's Walk to 2010.

Come join us!

AGDee 06-25-2008 10:52 AM

I have joined the site, signed up, and am in the Facebook group! I'm ready to walk (I think I walk that much at work every day but we'll know for sure after I get a pedometer).

Great idea! Count me in.

AGDLynn 06-27-2008 10:08 PM

On the W to 2010 website, I wish the generic icon was cuter. It looks like a bald guy with big ears.

agd4rie 06-27-2008 10:23 PM

:)

OK, I'm in! I bought a pedometer tonight. Huge commitment for me! I may have to dance my 1000 miles- I hate to walk but I love to dance! I'll need the support... so PUSH!

DoctorD 06-27-2008 11:39 PM

agd4rie - come join our group on the Walk to 2010 site :)

AGDLynn 06-29-2008 12:05 PM

Happy Feet is a great soundtrack to begin with!

Walk to Convention Facebook?

Hey there - I have joined the Walk to Convention site but am not sure how to join the Facebok. Can someone help me out? Thanks, Patti

AGDLynn 07-06-2008 06:30 PM

To join FB, you have to use an email address from a school, or company or some other org. It used to be just colleges but they have expanded. it.

My school lets alumni use the @alumni.westga.edu address that you set up through the alumni association.

It used to be that you could only access folks from the same school, etc.but now, they'd opened it up to anyone who has a FB account (I think). People have to confirm you as a friend.

Hope this helps!

AGDLynn 07-08-2008 10:32 PM

What kind of pedometer do y'all have?
I've tried 3 models with very different totals...one changes when I barely look at it.

DoctorD 07-09-2008 12:18 AM

I have the Omron Pocket Pedometer - Model HJ-112.

I'm still working on getting the stride right. I tested it at the gym earlier and it is off. I couldn't figure out how to reset the stride there, so I came home and studied the manual. I THINK I have it now, so I will check it again tomorrow.

I had it in my purse today and it was doing a great job of keeping up with my steps.

AGDee 07-09-2008 04:02 PM

Mine is a Robic. They had a lot of different ones with different features at the sporting goods store near me but they were all Robics. I guestimated at the stride. I don't think it's quite fair that us short people have to take extra steps to walk to the same distance <grin>

I concur at 5'1!

AGDLynn 07-13-2008 09:43 PM

Good news I found the cheapie (free) pedometer that seemed to work the best.
Bad news I found it when I was taking the clothes out the finished wash cycle.
Good news is I bought one like DD and Lion; it should be here Monday or Tuesday.
Stay tuned...

VandalSquirrel 07-20-2008 09:32 PM

I'm pending administrator approval. I guess they're cross referencing with IHQ?

I'll just recycle the pedometer I got from the JDRF walk I did. I think I know where it is.

Do you think I can count the warm up and cool down (or the intermediate I have to walk I feel like I am going to die) when I'm running?

I also just bought a cute bike, so I'm walking less, though once winter comes my bike will hang out indoors when it is icy.

AGDee 07-21-2008 01:52 PM

I think you can count any miles logged in on foot. There is some debate currently on the web site as to whether you can count other forms of exercise or how to convert other forms to "miles walked" so keep an eye out on the site, once you're in.

To make it easy to keep track, I'm just marking down miles every 25 miles and then clearing the pedometer. Goofy me forgot to take the pedometer to the mall with me when I took my girlie shopping Saturday. I know we walked the whole mall once on the lower level and one on the upper level. Perhaps their mall walkers part of the web site has some mention of distances.

Well that means not just the treadmill, but the eliptical trainer is in, but I guess not the bike. Oh what about roller skates? I can put on my leg warmers and blast Xanadu.

DoctorD 08-02-2008 12:40 AM

While it has not been a good week for me to get to the gym [pesky migraine, occasionally pesky children, and pesky work got in the way], today I hit 100 miles since convention :D.

Looking forward to the kids going back to school on Monday and getting back into my regular gym routine. Tomorrow morning [guess it's really a few hours from now] I'm planning Interval training on the elliptical as well as a full circuit of the weights - I can't wait!

AGDee 08-05-2008 06:56 AM

I'm right around 61 miles.

AGDLynn 08-05-2008 10:32 PM

I'm stuck at about 50. I still have my strained foot muscle. Doc says if it's not better, come back on the 20th and have an xray done.

SassyPantsAGD 08-06-2008 12:16 AM

I'm stuck at 30...

its been a rough few weeks...I'm in the process of job searching

I'm trying to get a job at WCU...admissions work...student affairs or something to that effect...

wish me luck!

A little late to the party but better late than never ~ what a great idea!

When I first saw the 2010 the first thought that came to my mind was the 2010 Winter Olympics (Vancouver is hosting) and all of the related healthy/active living initiatives currently underway. In any case, leave it to an AGD to come up with this awesome idea! :) Picking up a pedometer is top of the list for tomorrow's shopping trip.

Looking forward to sharing this with the AGD collegians and alumni around here :)

Cheers!

SassyPantsAGD 08-16-2008 01:40 AM

I just went up to do a Recruitment Workshop at Theta Omicron and our girls are taking great initiative to get in their miles!

They have plotted a 4 mile stint (partially up the mountain) and some of the girls are over 100 miles already!!

:D:D:D

AGDLynn 08-23-2008 04:44 AM

Gosh, no one's posted for a few days, lol. Must be back to real life.;)

We've FINALLY decided to put in the bathroom downstairs (YEA!) so I've been able to get the treadmill out of "storage".

My foot still hurts from the strain but my goal is to start walking the 10k steps a day as long as my foot "allows" me too. Having the treadmill will help.

AGDee 08-23-2008 10:26 PM

I hit 75 miles last week :) I took my daughter school clothes shopping today and did 3 miles in the mall.. sheesh!

Way to go! Keep it up!!!

I remain an overachiever. That's all I'll say ;)

That's one of the things I love about ya! When is your race?

VandalSquirrel 08-24-2008 02:03 PM

I never realized how much walking I did, even just being at the office, until I wore the pedometer. My little gadget even has a calorie counter personalized for my stats so I can take a peak at it if I'm headed to the vending machine.

"Oh I've already burned 400 calories today...I can eat that Snickers bar."

I had to ditch the duathlon plans - my partner in crime hurt his ankle, and I didn't want to do it by myself. Probably good right now, as I was unable to get my training up to a 10K prior to the duathlon [due to crazy back to school schedule], which would have been last weekend - and I had a blast helping out at recruitment instead. I'm looking at a few 5Ks in the near future, and hope to do a 10K by next spring.

Averaging 3-6 miles a day between the gym and regular everyday walking.

AGDLynn 09-02-2008 12:07 PM

After 1.5 months of pain, I finally had my foot xrayed. I have a heel spur that will take a while to heal:(, darn it.

DoctorD 05-13-2009 04:26 PM

how are y'all doing with the walk to 2010?

I am proud to say that I'm in Tampa waiting on y'all.... don't make me wait too long now, ya hear?

1002 miles as of yesterday!

I ran a 5K at the end of April and have another this weekend. I'm running the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4 [or rather, running as much of it as I can and walking the rest!] so I'm slowly building up to the 10K mark. There is a 10K locally at the beginning of June that I may do just to see what my time is as a comparison.

canadajen 05-19-2009 12:48 PM

One step at a time

Getting closer day by day! :) Will be adding 13.1 miles in form of my first half-marathon in 40 days from now ... a scary yet exciting prospect - doing first 10K distance run in next few days.

My mom has taken up the challenge too & loves her new pedometer! We check in with each other every few days to see who is ahead.

Glad to hear how well people are doing! Whether walking or running, AGDs are getting it done!

Cheers :)

I have a friend who wants me to do a half marathon in November... I'm thinking about it. Scares me, actually... but.... I'll be 40 a week prior, and there's something about being able to say "A week after I turned 40 I ran a half marathon."

Keep us posted on how the half goes!
