What is your favorite sandwich?

In keeping with better personal health management, I make a lot of what I eat now- and was just thinking today as I made a sandwich that I have been eating this same exact sandwich regularly since I was a kid and I have never tired of it.

Boar's Head Honey Maple Turkey
White American Cheese
Sliced tomato
Yellow Mustard
French Bread (wheat bread these days.)

So, what is your favorite sandwich? (yes, burgers and/or restaurant food counts too.)

ZTAngel 06-23-2008 09:15 PM

Grilled cheese. There is truly no better sandwich. My favorite is the grilled cheese sandwich at TooJay's. I'm so sad that they're located only in Florida. :( Every time I visit friends or family in FL, I always make sure to go to TooJay's.

tld221 06-23-2008 09:34 PM

i LOVE a BLT. not healthy at all, but give me thick-cut bacon with mayo and honey mustard on whole wheat, and im good.

or, if you want to really be grossed out, theres this place called Peanut Butter and Co. that makes this sandwich:

PB
Bacon
Banana
Honey
Multigrain/Whole Wheat

They serve it with milk and carrots. Yum.

ETA: i may lose some cool points but Starbucks makes a sandwich, i want to say its chicken salad on multigrain with lettuce, bean sprouts and cranberries. its the effing win.

AlwaysSAI 06-23-2008 09:45 PM

Peanut Butter and Bologna.......yummmmmm. :)

Dionysus 06-23-2008 09:48 PM

Grilled cheese. Especially when its the combo of swiss, cheddar, and american.

violetpretty 06-23-2008 09:50 PM

I like to make myself this sandwich, it's a modified version of a sandwich I had at a bagel place that has since closed:

smoked salmon salad (whole foods sells it)
sprouts
roma tomatoes
thin layer of pesto spread on both sides of a whole wheat bagel

I always loved the grilled cheese that the DGs at UMD sell on certain Thursday nights.

Tippiechick 06-23-2008 09:57 PM

sun dried tomato turkey on a croissant. nothing else.

SWTXBelle 06-23-2008 10:16 PM

Monte Cristo at Blue Bayou in Disneyland!

More mundane choices -

When I was in college, Grin's made a cheddar, bacon, tomato and mushroom sandwich - yuuuummmmm. It's no longer on the menu.:(

Starbucks has some good sandwiches - believe it or don't!

aephi alum 06-23-2008 10:32 PM

Roast beef on rye, lettuce and mustard. The mustard must be hot and spicy.

christiangirl 06-23-2008 11:07 PM

Honey Roasted Thick-Sliced Turkey + Honey Whole Wheat Bread + little bitta mayo and dijaun mustard + lotsa romaine lettuce = sandwich heaven. :D

summer_gphib 06-23-2008 11:14 PM

Ham, swiss, with lettuce, tomato, mayo and vinegar on onion bun from Jason's Deli. Yummy!

pbear19 06-23-2008 11:20 PM

Whole grain bread with nuts in it, like TJ's Whole Grain Flax & Fiber Bread
Large slices of tomato
Slice of some kind of white cheese
Mayo
Chopped fresh basil

Mmmmm...

Thetagirl218 06-24-2008 12:37 AM

If I am at home and making my own bag lunch I will make the following:

Salami
Mild Cheddar Cheese
Challah Bread!

My favorite sandwich to make at home for dinner or to get at a restaurant (Because it has to be hot!) Has to be a Cuban!!!!!!!

The perfect Cuban Sandwich:

Pork
Salami
Ham
Swiss Cheese
Mustard
Pickles, Thin, sliced long ways...
All perfectly pressed on Freshly Baked Cuban Bread!

Being a native of Tampa Bay, I took them for granted. Most people in the North part of the state had never heard of such a sandwich! Which sucked during my college years! I fondly remember a time one of my sorority sisters (Also a Tampa native) and me had a craving for a Cuban Sandwich, so we taught the Sub guy at Publix how to make one....lol!

piphiangel314 06-24-2008 01:23 AM

Smoked gouda on sourdough grilled cheese. It is the best sandwich ever.

tld221 06-24-2008 01:33 AM

can we do breakfast sandwiches too?

im a fan of egg bacon and cheddar on a crossaint. toasted only on the inside, cause then the outside gets all flaky and i dont appreciate that.

tld221 06-24-2008 01:34 AM

oh wait, one more, because i rarely meet a sandwich i dont like.

turkey, green apple slices and brie on a baguette. yum.

SuperblySigma 06-24-2008 01:50 AM

My number one favorite is salami and cheddar on wheat. I like mine with Italian vinaigrette (oil and vinegar in a pinch), a little Tabasco, tomato, and dill pickle. They're good made with the bread toasted (like... just the bread) or heated up, though they're greasier hot.

I also love Reubens--Corned beef, sauerkraut, and swiss on rye, with thousand island dressing, grilled. I like mine with LOTS of sauerkraut (and a little Tabasco, 'cause it's like CRACK.)

My perfect burger is medium rare, ketchup, mustard, tomato, sweet onion, dill pickle (or sweet-pickled banana wax peppers that my daddy makes), on a waaarm bun. Y'all are going to make fun of me, but I put onion dip on my burgers if it's around. MMMM. Cheddar and bacon never hurt, either... I also like 'em with bleu cheese in the middle. You take two thiiiin patties, put a bit of bleu cheese in the center of one, put the other on top, and press the edges together... if you do it that way, sauteed mushrooms on top are the way to go.

Leftover Thanksgiving/Christmas/Holiday Turkey Sandwich smothered with gravy. It's as if I look forward to it every year.

Back when I lived in Houston there was a deli in my office building that made just what you are talking about with very sharp cheddar. That rocked! They toasted the croissant open faced on the grill which kept the outside from drying out.

Tippiechick- sundried tomato chicken sounds awesome. How do you make that? Or is it a deli meat?

OTW- good call on the holiday leftovers. Plain Thanksgiving turkey with mustard on croissants is another one I like. Never tried it with gravy- but does sound good.

Good stuff overall. I have a selfish reason for this thread- I am looking for some other good healthy sandwich ideas to add to the mix, and lots of good ones so far.

Elephant Walk 06-24-2008 02:45 AM

The best breakfast sandwich I've ever had was at this coffee shop back home.

Big croissant bread, two or three sausage patties, eggs sunny side up, with cream cheese and honey on the bread. It would fatten you up right quick.

LucyKKG 06-24-2008 02:55 AM

Sourdough bread
Turkey (thin slices, not chunky weirdness)
Swiss cheese
Mayo
Mayyyybe lettuce

tld221 06-24-2008 10:38 AM

what im craving right now: eggs over easy on toasted wheat with ketchup. sounds gross but it is <3.

Phine 06-24-2008 10:45 AM

Mozzarella, tomato and basil panini...only when its done right.
Turkey club with avocado.

KSigkid 06-24-2008 10:56 AM

I always like a good sandwich from a real Italian deli. When I make sandwiches for work, I usually keep it pretty simple, since I don't have a lot of time in the morning.

There's also a place in Boston, Parish Cafe (http://www.parishcafe.com/menu.html), that does sandwiches from recipes of prominent local chefs. I've never had anything there that I disliked. Plus, they have a great beer selection, which doesn't hurt.

JennRN 06-24-2008 11:07 AM

wheat bread (toasted or not)
smooshed avocado
spicy alfalfa sprouts
chicken

There are times I feel so weird. (okay, a lot of times I feel so weird :D), but I really, really hate sandwiches. Maybe I got tired of them as a kid, but ever since I was a teenager, sandwiches to me have been what you eat when there isn't anything else to eat. Part of it may be the bread -- there really isn't much sandwich bread that tastes good to me.

I like burgers -- as long as they're not too thick, are on a plain (and not thick) bun and don't have any vegetable-type food on them. Cheese, bacon and condiments are all I want. (Okay, maybe fried onion rings -- the frying makes up for the vegetableness. ;)) But I really don't like sandwiches.

Sorry, I can't help you EE-BO. I know what it's like looking for new, good, healthy and easy things for lunch -- I'm doing the same thing, looking for new, good, healthy and easy things that aren't sandwiches for lunch. :o

I also love reubens. That's probably the sandwich I get most "out".

My faves that I make are grilled portabella burgers (grilled cap, with roasted red peppers, melted smoked gouda on an onion roll) or a Muffuletta sandwich, a la Central Grocery in Nola: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muffuletta

I got a pretty good recipe when I used to live in La.

does Cosi count?

and Reubens are awesome, but jesus be a heart attack. i severly enjoy Junior's pastrami on rye.

pbear19 06-24-2008 11:53 AM

A really good less calorie option to the rueben is to swap the corned beef with really thick slices of tomato. You still get the great flavors of the rye bread, sauerkraut and dressing, but without the meat (which I realize isn't a concern for 95% of you, but it's still tasty and marginally healthier).

Before anyone knocks this, try it - it's WONDERFUL!

I love plain old eggsalad (the plainer, the better) on homemade white bread.

NaijaRhose 06-24-2008 12:54 PM

I absolutely LOVE sandwiches! My fav right now is the Chicken Chipotle Panini at Panera Bread!

Leslie Anne 06-24-2008 02:21 PM

This thread is making me hungry! I love sandwiches.

YUM!

BLTs are great. Extra crispy bacon on white bread with a little mayo. It's too fattening though.

I found this place called Hannah's Bretzel and my favorite sammy is:

Wild Alaskan smoked salmon
cream cheese
capers
thinly sliced red onion
roma tomatoes
a little dill sauce
on a bretzel (pretzel bread)

At home I make turkey sandwiches with very thinly shaved turkey, lettuce, roma tomatoes, red onion, cucumbers, avocado, sprouts on whole wheat with a little mayo and dijon. :)

BLUPERFECTION03 06-24-2008 03:10 PM

A turkey breast sandwich with lettuce, tomato, pickles, provalone cheese, banana peppers and honey mustard on honey oat bread.

RedVelvet 06-24-2008 03:49 PM

My favorite is a breaded boneless pork chop with spicy brown mustard and strawberry jam on rye bread.

cutiepatootie 06-25-2008 02:10 PM

Martin's potato bread because of my allergies..
turkey
lettuce
tomatoes if it's summer and they don't have e-coli
cheddar cheese slice
no spread

or...when in Philly

a cheesesteak made w/ cheese wiz (the only other contender is provolone, but it is an impostor. Real cheese steaks have cheese wiz)
