What an amazing game, an amazing series, an amazing season. To think, the Celtics were in all but last place just last year and now they are the NBA champs.

Good times in New England tonight. The husband is especially happy - he grew up in Charlestown and stayed local (MIT) for university. He gave up his Celtics season tickets when we got married. I think he feels just a tad happy.
:D

Haven't the lakers NOT won a championship since Shaq left?

Jill1228 06-18-2008 12:51 AM

That wasn't a win, that was an ass whupping!
I have to show these posters to my mom (I grew up in a family of Celtics fans and would be disowned for cheering for the Lakers)

icelandelf 06-18-2008 12:58 AM

Hooray!!!

wolffootball37 06-18-2008 01:02 AM

That was an AWESOME win for the Celtics. Its going to be a big night for Boston!!!

Hopefully the gutless wonder will never, ever be compared to Michael Jordan again.

I'm still a fan of the NBA of the 80's and early 90's. (I'm not a fan of the current NBA.) So the Celtics-Lakers rivalry makes me warm and fuzzy. :)

KSig RC 06-18-2008 01:55 AM

By far the best part was KG hugging Bill Russell and asking "Did we make you proud?" about 9 times. Russell says yes, so KG asks the next most pressing question:

"Thank God - now you gotta tell me where to go out tonight."

Absolutely my favorite sports moment since the World Series.

also..the Lakers lost the LAST ONE they were in when they had a roster FULL of stars to Detroit

Remember...they had people like Rick Fox, Karl Malone, Robery Horry, and Gary Peyton and lost to a bunch of no names....

The Celtics were fabulous back in the 80s. Ainge, McHale, Bird....

That was awesome. I also got chills hearing how loud the crowd was throughout the game, especially as the Celts extended their lead.

I got to be a big of a Celts fan during college and while I was living in Boston, as I happened to be able to get tickets to quite a few games.

It's times like last night that I really miss living in Boston, and can't wait to go back there after law school. The city must have been insane last night.

Okay, this is awesome.

DaemonSeid 06-18-2008 09:44 AM

Some history was made last night also.

Celtics are 9 and 2 vs the Lakers in the Finals

This was one of the biggest blowouts in finals history especially for a series ending win.

This win surpassed the previous NBA record for the largest margin of victory in a championship-clinching game, previously set in Game Five of the 1965 NBA Finals, with the Celtics beating the the Lakers 129–96

This is the Celtics 17th Championship

and...correct me if I am wrong someone...but also Doc Rivers just became the first Black NBA coach to win an NBA Finals (Byron Scott was the first to go but never won) and also first coach who was also a former player that faced a Phil Jackson team (Bulls).

You have no idea how I get chills thinking about the Celtics (and the NBA, in general) of the 80s. :o

Danny Ainge for threeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!

Even Kevin McHale and Robert Perish's funny looking selves. :p

My two favorite classic NBA games are the Bird/Wilkins scoring duel in '88, and the Jordan 63-point game against the Celts in the playoffs in 86. They used to replay those games on ESPN Classic quite a bit, and Dan Patrick used to host a show on ESPN called "NBA's Greatest Games," or something along those lines.

I was really young for both of those games (I'm 27), but I wish I had a clearer memory of when they were played.

ESPN Classic is a Godsend.

Your post is full of legends. :) I wonder how many legends will come from the new NBA.

what counts as the new NBA ?

I think I can make a quick list based on it.

Hmmmm...I'm trying to remember when I stopped watching the NBA like my life depended on it. :) To the point where I stopped caring and knowing who was in playoffs and championships, besides watching SportsCenter or seeing some NBA player on a celebrity blog.

It has to have been when Wilkins and other 80's NBA legends started retiring and so forth. The early to mid 1990s.

Ya know, when slam dunking and 3-point contests started sucking. I haven't watched these contests in years whereas these contests used to be a religion in my household. Just like playoffs and championships were a religion. My fav teams in order were: The Lakers, Celtics, Hawks, and Detroit.

DaemonSeid 06-18-2008 11:04 AM

that's an awful long list if you are talking mid 90s

Jordan
Iverson
Rodman
Robinson
Duncan
Malone
Payton
Webber
J. Howard
Hill
Olajuwan
Mutumbo
O Neil
Bryant
Nash
Norwitzi
Carter
Divac
Ewing
Barkley
Garnett
Camby
Allen
L James
Arenas
Ming
Marbury

and that's all I can think of...I know I missed a lot.

DSTCHAOS 06-18-2008 11:21 AM

:) People who entered the NBA in the 80s are not the new NBA to me. If I was a decade or two older then, yeah, these people would be the "new NBA" to me. :)

I just chose an arbitrary time period when many of the 80s legends were retiring. But some of the 80s legends were still in the NBA in the early to mid1990s. They can be legends who just hadn't retired yet.

I just see a clear change in the excitement of the NBA that happened in the mid1990s and 2000s. So the newbies of the mid1990s and 2000s are the new NBA and I wouldn't consider these people to be legends.

Mutombo was good when he was drafted in 1991(?) and had a cool career. But beyond his notoriety I wouldn't call him a "legend."

Well with numerous Defensive player of the year and about 8 or 9 all star appearances and a finals appearance against Shaq and the Lakers...it would be hard to ignore.

Ok, I'll give you Mutombo then.

BLAH @ most of the others, though.

Sorry to nitpick, but you have a pretty liberal view on the term "legend." The guys I put in bold, in my view, are more along the lines of guys like Tom Chambers and Bernard King, very good players who fall short of the "legend" tag.

yeah...well even coming up with that off the top was kind of hard because then you have guys who were role players or footnotesthat kind of get lost in the sauce...

Like john Stockton, Larry Johnson, Jerry Stackhouse, and a few others.

ree-Xi 06-18-2008 11:55 AM

You know, had it not been for The Most Embarrassing Moment in Sport History (aka the Patriots losing to the Giants with 2 minutes left during the Superbowl), this would have been the trifecta for Boston sports fans.

Then again, win or lose, the true fans are ever faithful. But it sure does feel great to be on top.

Boston is the greatest sports town - it's just electrifying when any of our guys in town. I sure do miss it up there!!! Thankfully, there are a lot of Boston fans in this area of CT.

DSTCHAOS 06-18-2008 11:56 AM

I mean, if you insist on putting 80s drafts in the list. Please pay respects to Webb and Bogues. :)

Can the 2 shortest men in the NBA (who had GAME) get some love?

well I was given a long time period and I just came up with that off the top of my head...let me see what your list would look like and let's compare notes.

Oh, I'm not faulting you for your list, and I admit that your list is probably similar to a lot of others. I would have to think about it more and head over to basketballreference.com or someplace similar to refresh my memory, but my list would probably include the same names as yours, with the bolded names taken out. I would also include John Stockton and Clyde Drexler on the list.

Scottie Pippen could be a Webber type, where he's a near-miss or a barely-make, depending on your criteria.

I hear ya, in that there are a bunch of Boston fans in my area. However, I miss living in Brookline, running past Fenway Park every day, and working downtown; on a day like this, they city would be even more fun than usual.

see...now if you are gonna include scottie (who would be higher up on the list and 4 rings vs none) then you have to have Webber on there 20 spots lower!

And Rodman has to be on that list...one of the GREATEST rebounders from the late 80's mid 90s'......one of the best trash talkers and intimidators for someone in his position....doubt me? Ask Greg Ostertag.
