University of Tennessee-Knoxville Recruitment

.

Recs are good to have at UTK. If your town doesn't have an Alumna Panhellenic, you can still contact other ones in TN for help.

Also, I posted this in a thread about recs and it may help you brainstorm places where there may be women who can write you recs.

http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...t=53908&page=7

Getting recommendations for every sorority requires some effort and some leg work, but it can be done (even by girls who aren't from Greek families).

gee_ess 06-17-2008 05:17 PM

Where I live, there is not an organized pan group, but there are still several women from various NPC groups. Just start asking anyone and everyone if they happen to belong to a sororityand explain you are going through recruitment. Eventually you will locate what you need. Usually a sorority woman will be able to lead you to others.

You don't mention whether or not you are entering Tenn this fall, but if so, you need to have your resume, pictures, SASE envelopes for each house, etc ready to hand out when you find your alums. If rush is in the fall, then recs are (usually) due early to mid summer.

There's not an organized pan group in the NWA area?

I didn't know that! I figured there was a pretty good one. Little Rock has one, right?

gee_ess 06-17-2008 09:24 PM

^^^I am not in NWA... :)

Yes, LR has a very active and involved Alumnae Panhellenic Association.

honeychile 06-17-2008 10:25 PM

ec7721, chances are very good that you DO know quite a few Panhellenic women, but you just don't know who or which sororities. And you are going to need each one!

As another poster mentioned, ask everyone you know - male & female. Many men you ask may have a wife or sister who will write a rec for you. One creative woman at my mother's church was listed in the church bulletin as graduating from high school, & would love to have help with recommendations! I really admired her ingenuity - she knows what she wants, and is going after it! Have both of your parents ask around - or even siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. Leave no stone unturned.

Good luck!

Often, if you can find one alumna, there is a really good chance that she will know of alumnae of other sororities. As a sorority alumna, I know alumnae from almost the whole NPC and I live in the North where Greek life is not popular. Fraternity alumni might be able to point you in the direction of sorority alumnae, so ask them too.

Hi, I'm new here to GC.

I’m hoping to attend the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in the near future. While I have a ways to go before I begin recruitment, I'm trying to do my research now. I live in Tennessee and I’m a double legacy at UTK, so I’m very familiar with the school, but I’m clueless when it comes to recruitment there. My family has no history of sororities, so they are a bit clueless as to how to help me with this process. I realize that it’s very competitive here in the South, especially with SEC schools; however, after researching it, I haven’t been able to get a decisive answer regarding the competitiveness of UTK. I’ve searched, only to find a wide array of answers, ranging from “very competitive” to “not too competitive.” So my first question is, from someone that is familiar with it, how competitive is UTK compared to other SEC schools?

I realize with a school of this size, that there are probably many young women like me, who did their share of extracurricular activities in high school and have a good GPA, but there isn’t anything that sets them apart on paper. While I realize that a lot of it depends on how well you “click” with a particular sorority, is it possible for an average person like me, with no prior affiliation, a good GPA, and some extracurricular activities, to get a bid at a competitive school?

My last question is how do I go about obtaining recommendations if I don't know anyone affiliated with a sorority and Knoxville doesn't have an Alumnae Panhellenic Group that I can contact?

Thank you very much for your help!

Try contacting the sorority alumnae group for each group. I know there's a Knoxville ZTA alumnae group. Just look them up online. Start there for your recs.

ec7721
Approach recruitment with an open mind and just be yourself.
Form your own opinion of where you fit in best, because the sorority that may "sell" itself best is not always the "best".

barnard1897 06-28-2008 12:09 AM

Recs are very important at UTK. I know for a fact that in the past, at least one very competitive house down there essentially "pre-selected" their NM class from the recs that came in, before recruitment even happened. Ie, they'd sort all the recs over the summer into piles, and pretty much figure it out--so many from this high school, a few from that one, a couple from this neighborhood, and so forth. Totally against policy? Yes. Did it rule out anyone who didn't have a rec? Pretty much.

ZetaBeta 06-29-2008 02:33 PM

Do the sororities at UTK look at the girls regionally? What I mean, is do they take so many from Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, etc.? What does this mean for out-of-state girls?

formerlurker 06-30-2008 07:00 PM

Many of the chapters at UTK do regionalize their pledge classes. They want girls from every city and even from certain high schools in those cities. However, most of them also want some girls from small towns and some from out of state. Some of the chapters take a lot of out of state girls and others just a few. It may help you to stand out since you will be in a different category from the girls who are from the big Memphis or Knoxville high schools.
Also, Barnard 1897 is correct that some of the chapters use recs and resumes to make a preliminary list of who they want to recruit before rush even starts. (I assume this is probably done at most SEC schools.) Get a rec for every chapter- When chapters are only allowed to invite a certain number of girls to their parties, the first to be dropped are those with poor grades, poor resumes, and no recs.
Recruitment at UTK is competitive, but if you are open to ALL of the chapters, ignore the tent talk, and maximize your options you should have a good outcome. Good Luck and Go Vols!

ZetaBeta 06-30-2008 11:33 PM

Thanks for clearing that up!

NutBrnHair 08-11-2008 10:52 AM

All I know is that recruitment begins August 17.

ZetaBeta 08-12-2008 12:01 PM

If anyone hears a number....please post it! We keep hearing record number. Oh my! Of course, this would be the year my daugher's going through!

tennesseemom 08-13-2008 04:46 PM

Good Luck to your daughter Zeta beta

Good Luck to your UT rushee! Is she a legacy to any house? this is my daughters first year "on the other side" and she claims they have information on tons of girls! At least thank God, it will not be as HOT as it was last year. One girl actually had heat stroke in the party and had to be taken out! keep us posted, and good luck on move in day at the dorm! Have a lot of coffee that morning-you'll need it!

ZetaBeta 08-13-2008 11:57 PM

Thanks Tennesseemom! My daughter is so, so excited! We leave Friday and move in starts at 8 a.m. Saturday morning! Rush begins that night at 7 p.m. with Orientation. What a day! I'll try and keep you posted...however, I don't want to disclose too much information. I want it to be a great rush for her. She's got an open mind and a great attitude. Just pray the weather stays pleasant!

volmom 08-17-2008 10:21 AM

Tennessee's recruitment week kicks off today with "Go Greek" round.
Weather should be pleasant.

volalum 08-17-2008 07:15 PM

go greek

our neighbors daughter went to go greek today- high energy she said! Every chapter she visited was great- looks like it will be a tough choice this year for the girls. any news on the number of PNM going through this year?

volalum 08-18-2008 10:52 PM

number of rushees

Anyone hear the number of girls going through at UT? Any update on how today's parties went? Anxiously awaiting news from our girls!

Silverblue 08-18-2008 11:34 PM

Volalum, your neighbor's daughter has the right attitude. Every chapter there is a good one. I went through with the attitude that at least one chapter would want me, and I wasn't disappointed.

I work near the campus, and when I'm arriving and leaving, I think how long a week it'll be for girls on both sides. Hard to believe it's been 20 years since my last recruitment. And I'm sooo glad I don't have to go through it all again! You don't have that kind of energy at 41!

ZetaBeta 08-18-2008 11:43 PM

I had heard around 900. Does anyone know what quota has been the past few years?

Silverblue 08-18-2008 11:45 PM

I think quota has been around 50-ish.

volalum 08-19-2008 04:32 PM

Silverblue!! 20 years ago.....try 38 years ago!! Still fun, and such an important part of growing up. No matter what the outcome- rush can prepare you for some of lifes ups and downs!

Zetabeta.. quota last year was 47. -900 seems up from last year- I want to say it was around 750 rushees last year. And if you do the math 13 sororities at 47 = 611 pledges....which would make almost 300 girls out,(if they start with 900) so hopefully quota will increase, if there are 900ish girls!

Our neighbor had another great day, but is anxious for the cuts before skit day.

ZetaBeta 08-23-2008 07:27 PM

Preference parties should be almost over....any updates on PNMs?

volalum 08-23-2008 09:21 PM

Prefs

I have been waiting on an update from you zetabeta! How is your daughter doing? I haven't heard a thing- except that rush is going very well!

ZetaBeta 08-23-2008 09:34 PM

It's going very, very well! I hope to have a good report tomorrow afternoon!

kendr 08-24-2008 02:32 PM

Bid Day

Today is Bid Day. Quota was 46, and all 13 sororities made quota, and most made quota plus!

Benzgirl 08-24-2008 02:44 PM

Its great to hear when everyone makes quota

Silverblue 08-24-2008 07:07 PM

How wonderful that everyone made quota! Sounds like a very successful recruitment. Everybody should be very happy.

kappa_dancer 08-25-2008 10:19 AM

I'm very happy to report that a friend of mine from a student ambassador group accepted a bid to Kappa at Tennessee yesterday! I'm extremely excited that I now get to call her my sister!

UTK_Girl 07-23-2015 03:00 PM

Hello, I am a PNM at UTK in a few weeks, and I was wondering how sign ups for recruitment were going this year. I know the past few years have been close to 1000.

This is all very overwhelming- I can't imagine going through recruitment where there are 2500 PNM's going through. Thanks!

amIblue? 07-23-2015 05:29 PM

Good luck to you and GO VOLS! I do not have any information about the number of PNMs that are registered this year, but I would expect that it would be very similar to the past few years. Greek life participation stays pretty steady on the Hill. Be sure that you follow UTK Panhellenic on Twitter. They are good about posting updates.

Get your recs together (two for each chapter) and enjoy yourself!
