National Primary Day?
 

I am researching this topic for my mom and ran across this CNN story from last year. I also found a few blogs advocating for a National Primary Day.

Given the length of the primary cycle, the fact the many Americans feel that there votes don't count (usually Presumptive Nominees are elevated before everyone gets a chance to vote) and the multi-million dollar budget is takes to run for President, do you think a National Primary Day is a good idea?

I feel like it gives people a fair shot. They can't run around to every state so they don't have to. They keep most things at a national level and people who want to know have to look it up. Why do this to ourselves? Knock it out in one shot if possible. Or at least all in one week!

That would be a huge relief. This primary season felt intolerably long.

Yeah, I didn't realize other states had primaries at a different time than us until relatively recently. It's super weird. Pick one day!

Hawaii's Primary is in the freaking middle of September...well after the National Conventions.

As long as it's late enough to let the candidates campaign.

I oppose this. It would give too much power to the parties.

RU OX Alum: Why do you feel it would give power to the parties? I thought it would do exactly the opposite and put it in the actual voters' hands for a change.

because then the parties would be able to squeeze out third parties even easier than they are now

some Central Committee types will be basically circumventing the plurality (and therefore founding intent) of american politics

I would envision it differently.. with all the parties being welcome to be part of the primaries also.

I know we've always (more or less) had a two-party system, but up until relatively recently, the parties kept changing.

That has hasn't happened in a while, and I'm sure there is foul-play involved.

This would give the dem/rep. coalition even more power.

Well, that's because now, the parties themselves pay for the primaries. Other parties are more than welcome to have multiple nominees and have primaries to narrow it down to one candidate, but they don't choose/(don't have funding?) to do that. I would much rather see a one day primary that other parties could participate in if they chose. I think it would be kind of interesting to see how many voters actually declared themselves as members of the the other parties for primary voting purposes. It *is* up to those other parties to get their nominees together and organized though.

The more I read about this concept, the more I think it's a good idea.

I believe it would eliminate long primary cycles and allow for more participation of candidates who are 'priced out' of running for office.

I wrote about wanting a National Primary Day in my own blog. The current system is a mess.

Damn liberals couldn't make up their minds as usual.

BAHhahahahahaha. Have to totally give you that one without a peep of an argument in this case.

Because the Democrats had two viable and electable candidates but the Republicans could only come up with one!
