Breastfeeding at 7 yrs???

So apparently this woman has choosen to breastfeed her children regardless of their age. She claims that the child should "choose" when it's time to stop breastfeeding.

Now I know that prolonged breast feeding is shown to have increased benefits in some children but 7 years is OD to say the least.

7 YEARS?!?

I didn't make the 7 month mark with my son. I can see breastfeeding to about age 2 at the most. IDK, once the kid can ask for it, there's a creepiness factor. You start to wonder whose needs are being met.

aephi alum 06-09-2008 03:05 PM

That's just... creepy.

This kid is 7 and still breastfeeding.....he is scarred for life. He will never have a normal relationship with other women.

It's a little girl lol

Two sisters, the oldest was breastfed til the age of five. Her younger sister still requests to be breastfeed at age seven. They also gave their mothers' breasts names :D

KSUViolet06 06-09-2008 03:32 PM

Moms I know follow this rule: when you can ask for it, it's time to stop. No one I know breastfed their kids after around age 2.

Kids are going to continue to do what they know and are comfortable with. Mom has to be the one to decide when it is no longer appropriate to do some things because the kid generally does not know. It's the same principle with things like potty training. The kid will continue to use diapers until you decide it is time to start using the potty.

honeychile 06-09-2008 03:37 PM

blech. Our family knew someone like that. The son was six and still being breastfed. We often wondered if she was going to go to college with him.

There is no way I could come home from work and see my 6 yr old son in my wifes arms breast feeding. I say give the lil dude some extra veggies and tell him to "man up."

At what point does a mother cease to produce milk anyway?

But I did almost barf after reading how the woman in this link TRIED to make cheese out of her own breastmilk that was stored in the fridge http://www.indrani.net/index.php?q=2...st_milk_cheese. It's not possible apparently but it's gross that she tried to.

WTF

Breastmilk cheese, really though?

NappyBison 06-09-2008 04:20 PM

I bet she'd try ferment her own urine to make wine if she were so "inspired".

When a mom stops feeding the milk will dry up on its own. If she never stops feeding, the body won't stop producing.

Breastmilk cheese??? Seriously!!!??? WTF!
Nasty, nasty, nasty.

I could have sworn we talked about this last year because I recall bringing up a woman in the neighborhood where I grew up. We were within the city limits of Atlanta, but not in a wealthy neighborhood by any means. This woman was a professional wet nurse for various wealthy women in the area. She had her son nursing until he was older, like 8 or 9.

Women produce milk as long as milk continues to be expressed (naturally or by pump).

LucyKKG 06-09-2008 04:51 PM

Ewww why did I read this thread while eating lunch?! Thank God I'm having iced tea, not milk. :p

Senusret I 06-09-2008 05:32 PM

What about people who eat the placenta? TRUE!

midwesterngirl 06-09-2008 06:14 PM

When your child is old enough to tell you that he/she enjoys breastfeeding, you need to stop immediately.

epchick 06-09-2008 06:19 PM

Apparently breastmilk tastes better than mangos. I'd prefer mangos thank you very much!

That's what I started thinking about....I read somewhere that some people cook it and have a dinner party kind of thing to celebrate the birth of the child.

(I don't remember what breast milk tasted like. It was thankfully almost 3 decades ago. I imagine it served its purpose.)

O/T...

Over here, you can tell summer's near when you see the mango trees' first fruit.

My mom makes the best Pickled Mango in the summertime. It's always been my favorite afternoon snack!

My hubby's mature reaction..."Oh, gross! That kid's a lesbian"

Scandia 06-09-2008 07:33 PM

What does the girls' father think about this? How does he feel? Is there even a father in the picture? Or a father figure of some sort?

Not only it would produce an unhealthy attachment, but it is not enough nutrition for someone that age.

I highly doubt that the tit's the only source of food for that kid.

Scandia 06-09-2008 07:36 PM

True, but still.

And many non-human animals eat the placenta after giving birth. That said, I do not know if human beings are designed or intended to do so. Placenta in shampoo turns me away enough as is.

Adults drinking human milk makes me think of "Roman Charity" and seems too much of a dire straits emergency situation for me to even consider it remotely sexual.

What is with the little girl sighing with happiness like she's sucking on a milkshake?

ETA: Crap, I just threw up in my mouth a little when I re-read that last bit. Sometimes I gross myself out. :(

When will parents learn that the best gift they can give to their children is the word "no?" Boundaries are key to a child's development. Children should not "choose" all aspects of their upbringing... this is what leads to older teens and young adults having a sense of entitlement to everything.

On another note- this girl is old enough that her peers/classmates could be aware of what is happening, as well as old enough to file the memory away. She could be ridiculed at school for many, many years over this.

For those who said that the mom is doing it for her own benefit- I could not agree more.

PANTHERTEKE 06-13-2008 02:56 AM

My TKE nickname is Breastfed. :)

But not because I was breastfed a lot... lol

AlwaysSAI 06-13-2008 08:49 AM

The video is just disturbing. I cringed every time it showed the kid latched onto the mom. Blacgh.

Taualumna 06-13-2008 08:50 AM

Wasn't there a scene in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn where one of the Nolans' neighbours said that one of the kids, at age 3 or so still wanted to be nursed? And the way the mom scared the kid was to make her boobs look scary (I think she drew teeth or something on her boob)?

Well geez, I don't know if that's the best idea either, you don't want to make a kid "scared" of a normal part of the body (I see huge future issues for the kid whether it's a girl or a boy!).

I'm with Blondie, how about exercising a little parental direction and discipline and teach the kid how to handle a nice, strong "no." Helping kids deal with change and disappointment and developing coping skills is a parent's responsibility, isn't it?
