Wooden Letters
Where do you get large wooden letters made, or how do you make them?
(Like these ADPi letters, only a little bigger) http://campusapps.fullerton.edu/news...greek_week.jpg |
You might find some strapping young fraternity men to make them for you. Then you ladies can have the fun of decorating them!
|
I was going say basically the same thing. Just find a fraternity guy to agree to cut them out ofr you and you can take care of the rest. I know one of my brother always ends up cutting out paddles for a sorority we are close with.

What thickness of wood do you use?

I want them to look like the Phi Mu letters in the Bid Day thread, but with these colored stripes:

Can y'all post pics of wooden letters you've seen? |

Sometimes you can find large wooden letters at a JoAnn's fabrics, but you might also want to check any other arts & crafts store in your town.

Ask around your chapter. Usually someone has a dad, uncle, cousin, s'mady (somebody)!
If not, ask around the boys (like someone said earlier). Usually this gets the job done (cheaper too). But if you absolutely can't, then you have to decided if $200 is something your chapter can afford. |
We got an adviser's husband to cut ours out for us. I have a friend who works at the woodshop on campus, and I was gonna have him do it originally. Here's a pic of ours:

You could try the local woodshop class of a high school. Maybe they could help you find someone you could hire if you don't know anyone.
When I was a collegian, one of our chapter sister's father cut them out for us. Do you know anyone with a jigsaw and a drill? |

My cousin in Ill is coming down to live in TN and he wants to be a contractor. I've asked him, maybe he can make them up there and bring them down with him |

CDX sheathing (half inch) is the cheapest way to go. If you have more money, go with 3/8 or 1/4 ABX, which will be lighter, and will behave better if it gets wet. If you have letters that don't "stand up" by themselves (like Gamma), put a piece of aluminum tubing on the back. Then, poke a piece of steel conduit in the ground and slide the tubing over the conduit.
And, if you really have the money, marine plywood is the way to go. This is an election year, which means http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrugated_plastic is everywhere. Just grab a few signs (hopefully after the election). Laminate them with RTV, and tape the edges with black duct tape. |
I had a friend who went to home depot and got them cut. it costs extra but it looked great.

YAY!!! All I have left to do now is touch up the mistakes!! |
Oh god that is bright. Are those ASA colors?

Yeah...Our primary colors are crimson and pearl white, and our secondary colors are palm green and gold.
I got the shape of the letters and color scheme from this button... http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...s01/99c7_1.jpg |

I have almost-full cans of red, yellow, green and white paint...would any of these colors look better for the border?
I was kind going off of these letters... http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1.../phimu05-1.jpg |
I would use the red or the green to frame the letters. The white and yellow won't be emphatic.

I still like the idea of having some burly man them. We had large wooden standards (like three foot tall letters on a stick to carry to football games, etc) at my school. If you looked at them closely, often there were little messages from the guys on the sides or whatever.

I'm a teacher; I propped the plywood up on the board in my classroom, put the letters on the overhead projector, and traced the image onto the plywood. lol |
Oh, and an update on the letters.... the next chapter advisor after me had one of the girls paint them black.
All my hard work.... gone. :-P |
