Quick new job question

I recently found out I got hired for a new job this summer. (Hooray!) They left me a message, and I need to call them back to ask some details about orientation. I want to find out how much I'm getting paid, but I don't know a courteous way to ask. Suggestions?

GC has alllll the answers!

ree-Xi 05-28-2008 05:55 PM

Ask for a written commitment/offer letter. They can either fax or mail it. That's how I found out, with my first post-grad job.

Congratulations and welcome to the "real world"!!

KSigkid 05-28-2008 05:58 PM

The pay was always part of the conversation during the final interview, and was reiterated during the conversation where I accepted the position. I would imagine they'll talk to you about it when you call them back.

Congratulations on the new job.

PeppyGPhiB 05-28-2008 06:01 PM

Wow, they didn't tell you? I agree, ask for an offer letter. Always a good idea.

LucyKKG 05-28-2008 06:16 PM

Oh yeah, I forgot they're sending me a letter. It isn't actually a "real" job yet. Thanks for the congrats anyway! I'll be a counselor at a day camp by my hometown. Yay!

I knew the pay range but not exactly what I would be paid. I'll just call them and hope she brings it up, I guess. Hehe...

LucyKKG 05-28-2008 06:23 PM

Ahhhh dammit! I just got off the phone with her and ummm oh I hope it says it in the packet...

christiangirl 05-28-2008 07:11 PM

^^I was a counselor at a day camp and it was in the job posting. It'll DEFINITELY be in the offer letter though. So, I take it this is the only place you want to work this summer? If you planned to shop around at all, you'd need to know this before the letter, but if not then I wouldn't sweat it, it'll be in the letter.

Hey, I just noticed you live in SC. This wouldn't be Camp G, would it?

SoCalGirl 05-28-2008 09:37 PM

If it's not in the packet, send an email. Tip for the real world: always get it in writing!!!!!!! A phone call can be denied. An email can not. :)

No, it's not Camp G. I applied and interviewed there and TOTALLY thought I got it, but I didn't. I'm going to be gone for a few days for Kappa convention, so that may have affected it.

Oh, and yes, this is the only place I'm trying to get a job now. I got denied from other places soooo hooray for this one! I am stoked, though!

AGDee 05-28-2008 10:26 PM

It is ok to ask that question. They know you aren't working for free, nobody does that! It's more awkward to ask that question during an interview but they can't expect you to accept a job without telling you how much it pays. You can call them back and say "I wondered where in the pay range my pay will fall?"

Don't feel bad. I worked there one year as a team leader, then last summer applied for art instructor. Instead, I was offered OC because the CD thought it'd be a better fit for me...only to be let go on the second day of orientation because I wasn't "perky enough." It's a great place to work, but you're better off.

Scully 05-29-2008 03:39 PM

I would think that information would be included in the packet. And I would think that would be on it's way soon as they have to notify you about counselor orientation. Oh, how I miss working at day camp for the summer! I loved working outside in the sun. Beats sitting at a desk all day now. Best of luck to you!

LucyKKG 05-29-2008 06:01 PM

Camp name

Well, my mom got my packet today, and my pay wasn't listed in there. Crap! I did find out that I have to come up with a camp nickname that I'm going to go by all summer. Examples listed were Tornado, Tigger, and I forget what else. I think I'll e-mail them with my name when I think of it and then be like HOW MUCH ARE YOU PAYING ME but in a nice way.

So, any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a fruit or flower nickname. Daisy? Peach?

SoCalGirl 05-29-2008 06:08 PM

I remember two of my camp counselors went by Bandana and Unico (short for Unicorn). One of the guy counselors was named Cougar. :)

What about "Key"?

I def thought about Owl! I don't think that's a cute nickname for a girl, though. I'm thinking Ladybug or Sweetpea? I'll give it more thought...

Benzgirl 05-29-2008 06:47 PM

In the millions of interviews that I have done, salary was never discussed in any interview (other than to confirm what the interviewee wrote on their application). HR always extended the offer and the benefits package, then would go over the prerequisites to employment (drug screening, background check, etc).

I would get a check-list together....
1. What is the dress code?
2. Can you go over my benefits?
3. What are my hours?
4. Where should I park?
5. Are we paid weekly, monthly, etc?
6. What exactly is my pay rate? (always sneek that in, but never make it first)
7. Will I receive a formal offer in the mail?

I agree with the others that you should receive a committment letter in writing. Mom and Pop places won't do this but most other places will.

PeppyGPhiB 05-29-2008 07:34 PM

I remember all my camp counselors' nicknames, plus some others. I had Noob, Casmir, Jeep and Einstein. Some favorite names of other counselors include Slugger, Buddy, Kermit, and my favorite, A-U.

Yeah, I know most of the answers to those questions. I did get a commitment letter from them (it arrived @ my mom's place today). Thanks for the advice, though. You're totally right.

I'm still leaning towards Ladybug. :)

LucyKKG 05-29-2008 08:46 PM

Ok, pick one:

Ladybug
Sweetpea
Peach
Daisy
Poppy
Lily
Buttercup
Willow
Sage
Bunny
Owl
Flutterby
Fern
Azalea
Clover

SoCalGirl 05-29-2008 08:48 PM

Clover!

catiebug 05-29-2008 09:22 PM

I used Max (and later Indy - short for Indiana Jones) one year. Max was the name of my dog, and one summer (as a camper - I was 11), I wore a shirt with his picture on the front and "Max" on the back. I was called Max all week. I vowed when I came back as a counselor, I would go by Max. Later that summer, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade came out, so I changed my name to Indy (since that was the name of his dog).

One summer I worked with a tall girl who went by Lurch (from the Addams Family).

AOII Angel 05-29-2008 09:34 PM

How bout Flower, ie. "You can call me Flower if you want to!" from Bambi?

LucyKKG 05-29-2008 09:34 PM

Lol about Lurch!

Btw, my mom called again. I got a letter with all the stuff I need. Hooray! Moneys!! (Monies?)

Awww!

catiebug 05-29-2008 09:36 PM

Or Fleur (de Lis).

I love Buttercup (but I'm partial to the Princess Bride). How about a nickname after a hobby of yours? I always liked to draw. So I often used Sketch.

"What is this Junior?"
"That's his name. Henry. Jones. Junior."
"I like Indiana."
"We named the dog Indiana."
"You were named after a dog?!"
"I have a lot of fond memories of that dog."

I so love the Last Crusade.

I like Buttercup, Flutterby and Fern, but that's because I like quirky/funny.

catiebug 05-30-2008 07:22 AM

To clarify on the Max/Indy thing - it was summer 1989 and I was a counselor. I used Max, but changed it to Indy. I was not a camper.

I love the Last Crusade, too - the Crystal Skull was crap compared to that one.

christiangirl 05-30-2008 11:06 PM

Hmmm I like Peach!

deadbear80 05-31-2008 12:32 AM

I like sweetpea personally.

I was "Maverick" one summer (think Top Gun handles!). There was an Ice and a Merlin too :) (and no, this wasn't 1986 but we all liked the idea). There was a 4th girl who went by Rookie since she was the youngest of all of us.

speedsters 05-31-2008 05:29 AM

I miss summer camp! This is my first summer in 8 years not working at one, instead I'm writing my thesis and working :( My camp name is Speedy. And we always had group names for people, especially the international staff, one summer they were all dwarfs, flowers, weather... Try to pick something about you, would be my advice for picking a name. I remember having so much fun picking mine out, I went with Speedy, because I am fast, I talk fast, I ran track and (this one was never said to kids) I act like I'm on speed. Have a great summer :)

My roommate in college worked at a camp and one of her co-counselors was a Kappa whose nickname was Fleur. I think it's cute.

LucyKKG 06-02-2008 11:03 PM

Alright, it's official: Clover! Weeee!

SoCalGirl 06-03-2008 12:44 AM

Woohoo!!!! I'm sure it'll be lucky. :D
