Have you paid $4+ a gallon for gas yet?

It finally happened to me a couple of days ago in Columbus, Texas- $4.019 per gallon. And today here in Austin it was $3.999. It now costs me over $100 to fill up.

It is hard for me to get upset because I know full well how high gas prices actually hurt gas stations, refiners and many others in the energy industry. This is not a winning proposition for most who directly create value for the final product going into our vehicles.

But it still sucks!

LucyKKG 05-23-2008 04:57 AM

Yeah, it's been over $4 for a while in CA. Premium is 4.29 or 4.39. Ughhh! Actually, I think it's worse here in Santa Cruz than it is in San Jose.

AOIIalum 05-23-2008 07:04 AM

I haven't (yet) but DH paid $4.20 in NY/NJ this week.

Scandia 05-23-2008 08:43 AM

No, I have not. Thank goodness. I do not think I have even paid 3.80 yet.

The other day it took me 38 bucks to fill up my car- BUT it was at a rather expensive gas station (3.70-something) AND the car's empty light had turned on already.

knight_shadow 05-23-2008 08:46 AM

Thankfully, I haven't had to pay that much yet. Not that it'll make a difference when I do -- I hate driving, so I never fill my car all the way up.

Benzgirl 05-23-2008 08:47 AM

I would have, but I had a discount per gallon of $.60 with Giant Eagle Fuel Perks.

KSigkid 05-23-2008 08:49 AM

One of our cars takes premium, so we've been paying over $4 for a while.

However, last week was the first time I paid over $4 for regular.

NY maybe but not NJ. Jersey has some of the cheapest gas in the country. Up where I am, it's $4.05+ for regular. I go to Jersey for Trader Joe's and Organica (organic food store and farm-acy) and I fill up at that time.

ISUKappa 05-23-2008 09:19 AM

We've been paying more than $4 for a while for diesel, and I think it'll hit $4.50-4.60 this weekend. Super.

Leslie Anne 05-23-2008 09:37 AM

Filled up yesterday and the cheapest around was $4.17.

jon1856 05-23-2008 09:59 AM

If fear I am about to.
While gasbuddy shows one or two stations near by at 3.99, that was from last night.:(

srmom 05-23-2008 10:04 AM

Oh Eli, don't rub it in;)

Here's a question - what happens in reality if you don't use premium and you're supposed to? Sorry if it is a dumb question, but I'm obviously not a "car" person!

BTW - I can still get regular for 3.85 at the corner gas place, but it's been creeping up every day.

srmom-I posted the answer to your rather good question in one of the other gas threads.
AAA just had this story in their Car and Travel Magazine:
Why Pay for Premium Gas?
Do you spend $200 every year on octane that you don’t need?
To rein in budget-busting gas prices, maybe you need look no further than the button you press to pick a grade at the pump. If you usually fill up with highpriced, high-octane gas, you could save $6 or more per fill-up by switching to good old 87-octane regular. You’ll notice a difference in your credit card statement, but probably not in the way your car behaves....

JennRN 05-23-2008 10:13 AM

Ugh, yes!
For the first time ever, I actually had to fill my car at $4.04 a gallon last weekend. My car takes premium, but this was the first time I've paid over $ 4/gallon. Painful!! I stood at the pump by myself, and bitched about it-to myself.
This was in Corsicana, TX, and I don't know what prices are here in Houston, because I have yet to refill the car.

tld221 05-23-2008 10:42 AM

i saw as high as $4.25 yesterday.

:clutches metrocard and heads for bus stop:

EE-BO 05-23-2008 11:28 AM

Wow. Sounds like it is a lot worse elsewhere. The prices I paid were for premium- regular is still under $4 here.

honeychile 05-23-2008 12:08 PM

I'm looking to buy a new car soon - you better believe I'll be checking out the hybrids! In the meantime, we haven't hit $4 yet, but I have been clocking how many miles it takes to the places I need to go regularly.

AGDee 05-23-2008 12:11 PM

Hanging tough at $3.99 at the stations around me. I don't think they want to change that 3 to a 4 yet either...

aephi alum 05-23-2008 01:37 PM

Been paying over $4/gal for a while now. My car only takes premium.

According to gasbuddy.com, you can't even get regular for less than $4/gal around here.

Does your hybrid take regular?

How big is the tank?

How long are you able to go between fill ups?

What's your mpg?

Do you do more city or hwy driving?

:)

srmom 05-23-2008 02:20 PM

Thanks so much for posting the article Jon. My car is supposed to take premium, but I've been using regular and haven't noticed any difference. According to the article, I'll be fine. I'm not really into super high performance and horsepower. If it gets me to and from work and the grocery store, I'm good:)

I would tell you to head up to Union City/Hayward area because they always had the cheapest gas when I was there, but it would probably use up all your gas getting from there and back to SC! lol.

Around here its around $3.73-3.80 a gallon. But my dad was able to fill up at Sam's club for $3.66 a gallon.

I would hold off on getting a hybrid until their prices come down closer to gas types/versions.
Unless of course the model you are looking at still gets the Federal tax credit and/or your employer gives you some benefit.

Unregistered- 05-23-2008 05:52 PM

I filled up my tank last night at $3.95/gallon and spent about $40.00. Interesting, the only pumps that were working were the regular ones, a 180 from a few weeks ago, when only premium/supreme were available.

Good thing I did, because it finally hit the $4.00 mark in Hawaii. :(

smiley21 05-23-2008 07:28 PM

More than likely, I will be filling up my tank tomorrow. I will be paying at least $4.15/gal. I cannot wait to see how much it will take to fill it up!

Do you have a new tahoe or something?

twinkle555 05-24-2008 02:16 PM

Gas is around 3.79 here..so Im guessing in the next week I will be..

Ill be living off Ramen noodles day in and day out for the next year.. thanks Bush!!:mad:

jon1856 05-24-2008 03:33 PM

I just paid $3.999 for a tank of gas.
Per gas buddy, the station is the lowest in area.
The station just up the street is selling gas at $4.079
There was not line at at, I just drove up and filled up.
I asked the gas jockey what was up and found out the pump
is not able to be set above $3.999!
I know where I am getting my gas until the pumps get replaced!
Still $53.38 for 13.348 gals

texas*princess 05-24-2008 04:22 PM

Not yet in the DFW area, but I have absolutely no doubt it will hit that high before this weekend is over.

Lucky (maybe not.. haha) for me, I'm super sick right now and all I really want to do is sleep, so it will probably be one of those things I see after I come out of my hibernation on Tuesday.

I have a Prius...I'm sooo glad I bought it since I drive about 500 miles every 7-10 days. I get between 380 and 500 miles per tank with an 11.5 gallon tank. The most I've ever filled my tank with is 10.2 gallons, however. If I drive carefully (ie. the speed limit and with cruise control), I get just under 50mpg. I get 42 mpg if I speed constantly! I mainly drive highway but depending on the time of day, it can be very stop and go. You definitely get better mileage when maintaining a constant speed. My car does take regular so the most I've ever spent on a tank is $38.

AGDee 05-24-2008 09:14 PM

today I've seen some stations over $4 but most are holding at 3.999. I had heard that about some pumps.. that they can't be set over $3.999.. but most of the stations around here are newer, so I doubt I'll be able to take advantage of that.

txdiva 05-25-2008 11:24 AM

Is $3.89 close enough? That's what I paid on Friday!!!

Is it still like this in your part of FL? (I am looking at your location status)?

I have been paying 3.80 min. for quite sometime in the Tampa Area.

smiley, I have noticed that gas prices are slightly higher in Jax for some reason than other parts of the state! Why, I have no clue! You would think they could just send the stupid gas to the port!

Jill1228 05-26-2008 03:02 AM

No, not yet. I filled my car up on Thursday.
On Friday it went up to $4/gallon at my local Costco :(

and costco is the cheapest place in town

AOII_LB93 05-26-2008 12:56 PM

Yes, yesterday my husband and I both paid $4.06 for regular.

And the oil companies aren't gouging? Record profits though...because demand is so high... RIIIIIIGHT.

LPIDelta 05-26-2008 01:04 PM

I drive a diesel Jetta--and that is $4.55 a gallon. At the beginning of February, I paid $3 for the first time--its gone up $1.55 a gallon in three months!

tld221 05-26-2008 09:37 PM

$4.13. sheesh :(
more and more ppl at the bus stops.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/01/news...l/usgas_price/

the cliffnotes version of the article:

Bogged down
Most expensive places to buy gas
Rank Country Price/gal
1. Eritrea $9.58
2. Norway $8.73
3. United Kingdom $8.38

Cruisin'
Where gasoline is cheapest
Rank Country Price/gal
1. Venezuela 12 cents
2. Iran 40 cents
3. Saudi Arabia 45 cents

to which i say, to the last part... ah duhhhhhhhh!

jon1856 05-29-2008 10:23 AM

The end of $3.99 in New York State

Just heard this on National news on CBS radio:
"The State Bureau of Weights and Measures, as of Wednesday, will allow stations to sell gas by the half-gallon, provided they can show proof they have ordered new pump computers.
New computers have about a 20 back order currently and cost about $400.00 each."
If not done yet by other states, would not be surprised if they follow along in changing their rules as well.

RU OX Alum 05-29-2008 10:42 AM

it was $4.009 the other day

RU OX Alum 05-29-2008 11:06 AM

just realized that it went down, i guess, or i missed somehow since i don't drive that direction, but now it is down to around 3.85 most places, i should have waited two days, but wanted to get more by doing 3/4 empty fill up thing
