The State of.... South Florida??

Well I believe it hasn't been posted here yet.

A few mayors in Broward cities want to split Florida into 2 states.

Its been getting some attention in the media down here lately and I though I'd share :p.. And actually, 54% of the people who took a poll in this article online thought it was a good idea.

Quote:

Furious at what they consider the giving of more tax dollars than they get, North Lauderdale commissioners passed a resolution to divide Florida into two states: North Florida and South Florida.

They'd draw the boundary line at Jupiter, the northernmost city in Palm Beach County and head south down through Broward and Miami-Dade counties and into Monroe County.

"It's based out of frustration with the state Legislature ignoring the cities in South Florida," said North Lauderdale Commissioner Rich Moyle. "They don't really care too much what happens with South Florida."

Now would be a good time, I guess, with the national guard out of town.

violetpretty 05-08-2008 10:18 AM

Northern Virginia feels the same way about the rest of the state.

33girl 05-08-2008 10:19 AM

If this happens, West PA & East PA are next. Breezewood = PA Mason/Dixon line.

ForeverRoses 05-08-2008 10:50 AM

What about the UP of Michigan? Do they still want to be their own state? (I think they wanted to be called "Superior").

NutBrnHair 05-08-2008 10:53 AM

Maybe Georgia can annex North FL and leave us alone here in Tennessee. (The GA state legislature wants to move the TN/GA line to include part of a lake to help ease their water shortage.)

Munchkin03 05-08-2008 11:04 AM

Charlie Crisp is acting like this dude is crazy, but he's really crazy like a fox! I've been saying that there needs to be a North Florida and a South Florida for at least 10 years now. I always had the dividing line being somewhere between Ocala and Orlando. North Florida, however, needs to be its own state and not connected to Alabama or Georgia, since those other two states will drag us down.

That's crazy.

yeah, I know. That is where my reference to the Nat'l guard came in.

to explain: the aol guy said "what would you do if i got a group together to push this" and gilmore (i think he was gov. at the time) said "I'd send in the national guard. what would you do about that?"

It won't happen, in either state. They would just have the same problems again and again and we can't just keep adding new states willy nilly. If South Florida seccedes from Florida, they seccede from the United States, they should have to re-apply for Union.

shinerbock 05-08-2008 05:10 PM

I support this plan...so long as only North FL remains in the United States.

AZ-AlphaXi 05-08-2008 06:10 PM

somewhere I read (don't remember) and don't know if its true ... but I remember reading somewhere that Texas has the right to split itself into 5 states if it wants ...

also I always thought there should be Baja California and Alta California ... So. Calif. is so different from No. Calif

I heard something about that a while ago, but back then it was declared false. But, according to Snopes, there's some truth to it.

Learn something new every day :D

SigKapSweetie 05-08-2008 07:11 PM

From there South, it's pretty much Cuba anyway. I'm for it.

FSUZeta 05-08-2008 08:21 PM

they didn't mention collier(where i live) or lee counties, but i imagine that they would not want us anyway, because we are mainly republican and they are democrats. they can just include us in with north florida when they divide up the state.

LucyKKG 05-08-2008 08:55 PM

Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but does anyone know the last time a state split? (Whether it was N/S or into a completely different state) That doesn't happen super often, ya know.

BabyPiNK_FL 05-08-2008 11:15 PM

Just for reference, we still have white people and black people down here. As well as people not from Cuba but are not native Floridians (ex. Colombians, Haitians, Dominicans, Canadians, New Yorkians (lol). Not everyone is Cuban... That's like Texas saying that they should split up b/c there are so many people of Mexican descent there. It's not a good enough reason.

What IS a good reason (not that I'd want this to happen b/c I can't live in a state without Disney) is that they take far more money from here then they give back. And that is simply not fair.

You'd really be surprised what many people think S. Florida consists of (even people who have been here). Especially bigoted people...I've heard some of the nastiest most racist untrue crap describe where I live. It's sick.

its true, i learned about it in 7th grade texas history. we did an activity where we divided it into five states, named them and gave them flags and whatnot.

That's a really ignorant and stupid comment.

The mayors that thought this up were... a white mayor, and a Black mayor. From Broward County (which is majority white fyi).

Also, SoFla tends to be more Democratic while the state government is Republican. The state takes their money (and lots of it since SoFla has a lot of wealth) and uses it towards causes that SoFla doesn't agree with.

I may be in Atlanta now where I get made of fun for being from SoFla (since SoFla isn't really "the South") but my heart will always be there. I'd move back there in a heartbeat. I guess you could never understand unless you've lived there. It's vibrant, diverse and the winters are non-existent! :)

And if I ever manage to find a gas station in SoFla where I can get directions in English, I'll take it back.

It seems like I'm not giving you the response you wanted to this topic. The idea came from South Florida, but we of the North are willing to stand on the dock and wave Bon Voyage when you go.

shinerbock 05-09-2008 08:59 AM

Give us Destin, Rosemary, Seagrove, Pensacola, and Jacksonville. We'll see if we can get a three way deal going where we get you Trenton, Jersey City and Newark in this trade. You guys can have everything else.

I believe it would be West Virginia from Virginia in 1861.

PhiGam 05-09-2008 09:55 AM

I'm in favor of it.

To my knowledge Miami Dade county is the only county in the nation that is a majority Hispanic. Of course there are people of all races there but getting offended when somebody makes a comment regarding the ethnic makeup of SoFla (Panther) is ignorant.

33girl 05-09-2008 10:37 AM

That NoFla flag is very ADPi looking.

I don't know how Trenton and Jersey City got into this, but if we are getting NJ in the discussion...seriously yinz...if you want Philly, you can have it. You can have its former mayor too.

shinerbock 05-09-2008 11:02 AM

It is a done deal. The US keeps Naples, The Republic of South Florida gets all of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and has first right of refusal on Illinois.

NO NO NO!! They get Philly County only. Don't go selling my whole state off to SoFla.

I'm sure they would love to...but alas, our yooper buddies could NEVER support their own state. We give them a lot of money, because we love them, and also because they make delicious pasties.

Tom Earp 05-09-2008 05:24 PM

This is so funny but yet can be so true!:D

There are States that are divided by either distance, race, if some wish to call it that?

Missouri is and was devided during the Civil War as many of know it.

So is Fl., Penn., California, so who actually cares?:D

There was a study at one time about Metro Areas with Metro Govts. combining to be leave it or not keeping Costs down!

Oh, that would not happen would it?:p

Okay, name Major Cities that could do this?

Cutting down Govrrnment costs!

Can You?

K C Mo./ K C Ks. being one.

PANTHERTEKE 05-09-2008 06:09 PM

Right. I shouldn't have gotten so offended. But keep in mind that "South Florida" isn't just Miami-Dade county, which might be the biggest county in the area, but its also Broward and Palm Beach counties (according to the census). And the population is about 5.4 million people, of which about 800,000 are Cuban-American.

There are more non-Cuban hispanics in Miami than Cubans. So even though Cuban-Americans might be the most prominent hispanic group in S.Fla, not ALL of S.Fla is "little cuba." And there are places in Miami where you can stop and ask for directions in English.

Can we move that line a little further south??? Maybe to Tampa? ;)

Having a been born and raised a Florida girl, I can honestly say there are three different parts of the great State of Florida, South, Mid, and North.

I would say South Florida would stop in the middle of the state south of the Polk County line. Tampa Bay, Orlando, and Daytona are very much their own mid-state culture.
North Florida would be Ocala northward. Having gone to school in Jacksonville, I can honestly say it is more like Southern Georgia than Florida.

I am vaguely remembering from my Florida history class that West Florida used to be its own country/ republic that stretched from Tallahassee to Mobile during the 1700s....

Okay-Sweetwater and Dolphin Mall , Hialeah, etc. area are bad. Yes, there are a lot of Spanish people who don't speak English, but that is slowly dying out. I used to go into stores and get ignored because I'm obviously black and therefore assumed not to speak Spanish, but that is happening less and less and LESS. BTW-How did you come to buy a house in that area? Didn't you notice that prior? LOL!

I just want people to understand that I was born here, and I live here, I have a nice life here, and just like you love wherever it is you come from despite all it's faults, I love South Florida. It is not at all what you make it out to be. Visiting, you can only see a certain side and it doesn't accurately display how we live collectively. I would never imply that somewhere should go join another country because of it's racial/ethnic makeup. I find it highly offensive. We are and have been and will continue to be a part of the U.S.

The problem was NOT initiated as a racial one but as a financial/political one. But every SINGLE time this topic has been discussed ANYWHERE online it immediately turns into a hispanic/socio-economic bash fest. I find that highly insulting for various reasons. There is nothing wrong with being different, every region is different for its reasons. I would never insult the states that have a heavy Norweigan culture or Italian culture, or Asian culture, or Mexican culture, or German culture (and all of these exist all over the U.S.) because that is apart of the state and who they are and who lives there. Nor would I suggest that they should split from the U.S. because "I don't like how they live/their local culture" (which is basically what a lot of you are saying in a nutshell). It just is what it is.

And maybe we wouldn't have so many "slums" that you swear we do if we could get back our damn tax money from the state! Things might actually improve.
