100 Students Arrested - which fraternity is involved?

Nothing specific yet in article, just that "fraternity members" are involved...

Nearly 100 students at San Diego State arrested in drug bust

May 6 12:38 PM US/Eastern

By ALLISON HOFFMAN
Associated Press Writer

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego County district attorney's office says nearly 100 students have been arrested at San Diego State University on drug- related charges.
Drugs, cash and guns were seized from sellers and buyers in the bust that followed a five-month undercover operation.

Prosecutors say the 96 arrests include fraternity members.

Defendants are scheduled to appear in state court to face charges Tuesday afternoon.

ComradesTrue 05-06-2008 01:43 PM

I prefer the cnn.com version of the story. They omit the detail that fraternity members were involved and instead highlight that some of the arrested are criminal justice and homeland security majors, which is a *much* more relevant (and frightening) tidbit, IMHO.

ETA: okay, the updated CNN article does mention fraternity affiliations... but again, to me the story is about the declared majors of so many... including one guy who was to graduate this month with a master's in homeland security.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

Supposedly Theta Chi members and one other fraternity were involved. This was passed on to me from someone warching the program. Their site is not totally updated as of yet.

The news release alleges a member of the Theta Chi fraternity sent a mass text message to his "faithful customers" saying he and some others temporarily would be unable to complete orders for drug sales due to a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.

The text message went on to discuss a "sale" on cocaine and gave details on reduced prices, the news release said.
This is in the new article on cnn.com - wow, how dumb can you get? A mass text message?

One student allegedly dealing cocaine was a month short of obtaining a master's degree in Homeland Security and worked with campus police as a student community service officer.
Wow, if that is not the height of stupidity. They were begging to be caught.

33girl 05-06-2008 02:40 PM

For real. Ummm, code words, people.

Tom Earp 05-06-2008 02:57 PM

It also includes members of Phi Kapp Psi.

What a damn shame as a couple of the maroons wanted to know if it would hurt their chances with the FBI and HomeLand Security!

Some were working on advanced degrees.:o

I would venture to say that their Nationals will pull their Charter.

baci 05-06-2008 02:59 PM

This is truly sad.

Tom Earp 05-06-2008 03:00 PM

Updated and members of Phi Kappa Psi also involved.:o

ADPiLove 05-06-2008 03:56 PM

Wow...I'm surprised I haven't heard about this yet, considering I'm in SD. Crazy, especially with some of the majors they have.

exlurker 05-06-2008 04:00 PM

An ABC site says, among other things:

"As part of the investigation, the Drug Enforcement Agency and San Diego State University police say they infiltrated seven fraternities on campus, finding that most or all of the members were aware of the drug dealing activity in their organizations. "

The way this news is developing, I'm wondering if any sororities were also involved.

PeppyGPhiB 05-06-2008 04:03 PM

WOW...I wonder what the fallout will be for the greek system at SDSU. This is something I could see closing down the whole system.

Here's the article on the cover of MSNBC:

Dozens of college students busted in drug sting

They were 'preying on' others, San Diego State University president says

SAN DIEGO - Nearly 100 people, most of them students, were arrested in an undercover drug investigation at San Diego State University that began after a student's fatal cocaine overdose last spring, authorities said Tuesday.

Authorities seized several guns, at least $60,000 in cash, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, hash oil, methamphetamine and illicit prescription drugs, authorities said.

Two kilograms of cocaine and 350 ecstasy pills also were seized, officials said, who added that several more people were being sought.

"These people were preying on our students," SDSU President Stephen Weber said at a press conference.

Eighteen students were arrested Tuesday when nine search warrants were executed at various locations, including seven fraternities, said Jesse Rodriguez, San Diego County assistant district attorney.

At one fraternity, prosecutors alleged, all members were involved in drug dealing.

About 75 students faced charges.

33girl 05-06-2008 04:12 PM

OK, I'm confused. Who does the president think was "preying" on the students - the undercover guys or the people who were selling? Because if it's the latter, man, that damn Sephora needs to stop preying on me.

He was talking about the drug dealers. Students being a "young and vulnerable" target market, that is.

I must have missed when they started admitting 5 year olds to SDSU.

Ummm seriously...I honestly don't think students are going to buy from skeevy people they don't know from a hole in the ground. There's usually a student connection.

But the dealers have suppliers that probably recognize college students as a hot market, that's all I'm saying. They're good salesmen. And anyway, you think students can't prey on their fellow students?

SoCalGirl 05-06-2008 04:36 PM

I'm going to (pre-emptively) request that everyone keep in mind that there are lots of good people in the greek system at State. Including Josh80 (Phi Psi) and Stan (Delta Sig), who unfortunately don't post anymore.

I don't think anyone who is selling to college students is selling to anyone who doesn't want drugs to begin with. "Prey on" makes it sound like they arrived at the school the picture of innocence and had to be talked into it by the Big Bad Dealers. Call me cynical but I really really don't think that's the case.

Tom Earp 05-06-2008 04:39 PM

I also wonder how many GLOs were involved as it intimated that more than just TX and PhiChiPsi!

I also wondered how this will effect the whole Greek Community and hope they are not all kicked off.:o

These were not Locals, but National Greeks.

I was just paying my way through school isnt going to get it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't navane also an SDSU AXO faculty advisor?

33girl 05-06-2008 04:48 PM

I hope no one misinterpreted my comments. I would feel that way about any college, not just SDSU. The comment by the college's president was just rather unfortunately worded.

My bad. I remember reading in an old GC thread that she was AXO's Faculty Advisor.

She may also be. Either way, hope neither (and no other) chapter is involved...

bejazd 05-06-2008 05:27 PM

^^^ditto that.

I was just reading this morning (before all this was reported) that the College Area Residents group was urging the city to take action against the many "smoke shops" in the college area selling drug paraphenalia. I'm sure that includes the hookah lounges and all that. gross. Get it out of our neighborhoods and away from our kids and our schools. And may all involved in this be prosecuted to the full extent of the law!

sdsuchelle 05-06-2008 05:39 PM

WHAT?!?!

THETA CHI?!?!

When I was at SDSU a few years ago Theta Chi was the sweet, slightly nerdy fraternity. I NEVER would have thought they would be the ones arrested... there are several other fraternities that would have come to mind first.

Also I would like to say HA, I TOLD YOU GUYS SDSU IS FULL OF COKE! When I said that a huge percentage of the greek system did drugs, everyone jumped on me and said I was overgeneralizing. Not quite. It really makes me sad.

Way to show pride in your university. I bet you're proud of that degree

Not saying that SDSU is abnormal, just saying that most people aren't so proud of being right about something like this. And it doesn't exactly increase the value or prestige of your diploma.

OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

People got on your ass because YOU WERE POSTING RUMORS AND IDENTIFYING THE VICTIM BEFORE OFFICIAL REPORTS WERE EVEN ISSUED!

I'm not proud of it. In fact, I think its disgusting and the university turns a blind eye to it... people should be more aware of what a huge problem it is at SDSU.

sdsuchelle 05-06-2008 05:46 PM

OMFG now I remember why I stopped posting at this board.

I WOULD JUST LIKE EVERYONE TO STOP TURNING A BLIND EYE TO THE ISSUE OF DRUGS AT SDSU. I'm not "proud" of being right about it but I'm glad that the police finally stepped up and did something about the problem that everyone secretly knows about.

And yeah, I guess I do feel a little bit like saying "I told you so". BECAUSE I DID.

Anyways I'm out. I hope this sting makes everybody more aware of whats going on. For these 100 kids who were arrested there are probably thousands more that are involved in this crap, and a lot of them are in the greek system.

SoCalGirl 05-06-2008 05:46 PM

She was attacked for saying those things last time. I would feel the same way if I was her.

I know that thread was heavily edited, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but people agreed with sdsuchelle and acknowledged that drug use was heavy (see OtterXO's post). Several indicated that chapters and the university need to get more involved.

So I don't really get how people "are turning a blind eye to the SDSU drug issue" like she's claiming.

She was attacked for a whole 'nother reason.

KomaThetaRho 05-06-2008 06:20 PM

still nothin else than just Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi are the ones involved however earlier it was reported that more than just these two fraternities were involved with everything so i dont know whats goin on there.....any thoughts???

sdsuchelle 05-06-2008 06:23 PM

Back to the topic at hand.. here is a link with descriptions of some of the arrested:

http://www.fox6.com/media/news/f/3/7...ug_Dealers.pdf

Here are the fraternities listed:

Theta Chi
Phi Kappa Psi
Delta Sigma Pi

... and one of them says "SAE marijuana ring", but I don't know if that means Sigma Alpha Epsilon or SAE stands for something totally different.

KomaThetaRho 05-06-2008 06:32 PM

thanks much....this just blows because im theta chi here in lake charles, louisiana and some of our brothers know the members responsible so my phone has been blowin up and im tryin to find out what the hell is goin on. thanks for the update!
