What color did your chapter wear for Prefs?
Our dresses were black, as were the majority of chapters' dresses at UF. I'd only ever heard of wearing black or white, but then I saw an old thread where an ADPi said they wore blue! What color were your prefs dresses?

We wore black.

Black.

My last year, we were told to either wear a BLACK cocktail dress with WHITE shoes or a WHITE cocktail dress with BLACK shoes. It sounds odd but it actually looked really good.
I believe the chapter is switching back to ALL black this year with pearls. My chapter had a rule stating that our dresses had to be either tea length or slightly above the knee, no shorter or longer. They also could not be polyester (because it tends to look cheap). Our shoes also had to be a stiletto-style heel (unless you had a medical reason for not wearing them). |
We always wore black but I have seen pics of Zetas wearing turquoise. And AOPi wore red at our school I think.

Black.
I remember hearing that the year I came through rush was the first year they wore black. It was white before that. Not sure if I'm imagining that though. |
Black!

Black.
I would say 70% of the chapters on my campus wore black when I was an active. I think one or two wore white, AOII wore red and I think DZ wore green/teal (and were supposedly all made by an alumna and very '80s - I went through rush in '97). |
Get ready to be wowed....back in the day....we wore long, light blue satin formal gowns in one of three attractive styles that you made (or had someone make!) over the summer. Oh so darling, not to mention hot and sticky.
|
Black, knee length.
|
Black, knee length, no cleavage. The only white was the pearls.
|
I'll date myself: we wore various pastels of the same style dress, all made by the same seamstress in town and passed down for generations. Note that my chapter has come a LONG way and that no one has seen those dresses, except in scrapbooks, for many moons!
|
Back in the old days, at my non-competitive campus, we wore a cocktail dress, but not any one particular color. We did have dress-checks by the recruitment chair, though.
I wore my mother's silk dress from the 50s, that was so, so cool. Then, it was called Retro, now it's call vintage. If I was still a Size 2, I would wear it today. |
My chapter wore black. Shoes had to be black, but they could be heels or flats. Jewelry had to be pearls, with an exception for engagement/wedding rings.
All the chapters except Alpha Phi wore black. APhi wore white and decked out their room in ivy and white decorations. As a rho chi, I got to see every chapter's rush room, and I must say APhi's room blew me away. |
White, until my senior year, when we went to black. The white dresses were fairly identical (you could have it tailored to your style), but the black ones were whatever you wanted.
But yes, I've heard of several ADPi chapters which wear either azure blue, or azure blue or white. |
We wore black with heels and pearls/gold jewelry.
Other houses on our campus-- ADPi--black dresses Phi Mu--They wore full pink skirts that were tea length with white blouses, white (!) hose and black shoes. Theta--They wore Jessica McClintock style drop waist dresses in mint green, pink, and then randomly there were like 10 that were navy blue. Every girl in that house hated those dresses, and they all fought over who would get the coveted navy dresses. PS--this was in the mid 90s. Now everyone on campus wears black. |
We wore (no kidding) long, mandarin necked, high waisted, sleeveless (actually, the arm holes cut in a little) slender dresses in pastel gingham. Yellow, pink, pastel blue, coral and lavender.
They were made either at home using the same Vogue pattern or by a seamstress, but many were passed down by the seniors each year. The available passdowns weren't in a color I wanted, so I made my own over the summer. Sounds lame and a little Green Acres-esque, but they were actually very pretty and very cool looking on a hot night in Oklahoma, and the cut was flattering to almost everyone. It was pretty typical in the day (early to mid 70's) for the pref dresses to be made from a pattern and for sororities to buy fabric by the bolt. People passed the dresses down, so houses wore the same pref dresses for several years. I wore mine for three years, and they had been used several years before that! The move to all black for most pref dresses makes for a sophisticated look, but the flip side is that every group tends to look the same. Add a flower or candle ritual with some testimonials at each house, and it could really become a blur for the poor PNMs. |
We wear black cocktail dresses. I think almost all the soroities on my campus does too.
When I went through Freshman year my soon to be chapter wore pink cocktail dresses. The idea was cute and but there were so many shades and I heard they had problems with everyone finding pink cocktail dresses so the next year it was changed. I love the idea of the white and black dresses with the oppsite color shoes. How did you decide who wore which color? |
My chapter wore winter white (not white, WINTER WHITE) dresses for I think... well definitely years, including the year I went through recruitment. The next year, my sophomore year I believe, we switched to black, which was a good call. The winter white really wasn't pretty (IMO). The white dated back to a time when we had a bit more frilly rush in the early 90s, before the houses were built. Each group would get a room in the student center and paper the entire room each night in a different way. Pi Phi had a "heavenly angel" theme on pref night and covered the ceiling in white and silver balloons and had all kinds of beautiful "heaven" stuff, and the winter white complemented that. When we went to the houses, though, they cut down on the frills (plus the frills weren't as much needed due to the beauty of the houses), and things changed. So we switched to black.
For some reason I feel like all the groups at my school wore black although I have no real reason to think that. At one time the PNMs (including my freshman year and I think at least one year after that) were told they could not wear white, black, or red dresses but had to wear other colors. That would imply that at least one group was wearing red - probably Chi-O as they were the only group with red as a color on our campus. They loosened the restrictions on the colors PNMs could wear due to complaints from PNMs & moms. I think that happened my junior year. No group (AFAIK) at W&L wore full-on gowns. It was a cocktail dress look - although a bit more conservative/tasteful than "cocktail". |
We wear black. I have no idea what the other NPC chapter on our campus wears.
|
We wore black with rhinestone jewelry last year and im pretty sure every chapter but Tridelta wears black (Tridelt wears long white satin dresses and no shoes). This year were pairing red jewelry with the black cocktail dresses.

Lion, good point! I noticed that too! That's why I liked the idea of buying the same dress from a company and just ordering it in bulk for the whole chapter. But no frills usually means that idea is out.

Way back in the day, we wore matching red dresses with a white sash. I think they now wear black and only the President wears red.
|
We wore black with pearl jewelry and black heels.
I would have loved to see two or three shades of blue dresses, but I think that would have caused an outcry from the rest of the chapter. |
we wore black floor length gowns.
my daughters chapter wears white tea length dresses. |
Early '80s
White dresses to the floor -- the officers wore long white gloves during the pref. ceremony.
|
Black with pearls.
|
We ALWAYS wore red for prefs. For years, we had a bride's maid style dress with this terrible ruffles for sleeves. Thankfully we got rid of those the first year I was on the sister side of recruitment. After that we had matching red suits and wore them with bone colored shoes and hose. After two years they switched to long red dresses that they all bought from a catalog. I remember being so awe-struck walking into Biedenharn gardens for pref and seeing all the sisters dressed in red lining the lawn!
|
We did not have fancy schmancy prefs - we usually were dressed in varying combinations of red, black and white. The only chapter I think did matching outfits for pref was ZTA and they all wore grey suits. This is 20 years ago though. I'm sure it's changed since then.
|
We wear white while most other chapters wear black. This was really contraversial several years ago when the (former) Bama Admin pushed recruitment beyond Labor Day. This may sound silly to some, but it's the South. White after Labor Day? We had a chapter debate/vote on whether we should change. We decided to keep it just because it made us unique amongst the other chapters on campus. Fortunately for this reason and so many others that are far more important, we were happy when recruitment returned to Aug the week before school.
|
We wore black dresses (not cocktail dresses, more like church-appropriate dresses) with our badges. In fact I remember being told that we couldn't rush someone during prefs without our badges on. We also had to wear black hose and black heels. NOONE was allowed to wear nude hose.
pretty much all of the other sororites wore black as well. I have no idea what they wear now! |
Mid-80's rush. Wine (why couldn't we have used silver blue instead?)polyester satin floor length dresses. Pouffy short sleeves, drop waisted. We looked like bridesmaids from hell.
|
You know, what we need on this thread are some pictures! Particularly those of us from the early, satin, handmade era!
Off to dig some up hopefully... |
We switched from black to red my first recruitment and I loved it! It looked so pretty...It brightened up the room so well for pref

We have pink bridesmaid dresses. I think that everyone else is either black or white on campus, but I'm not a 100% sure.

I'll post a picture! (Even though we wear standard black...hehe...) This is the only decent one I found:
