Hannah Montana in Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair shots of Hannah Montana star cause scandal

By Anita Singh, Showbusiness Editor
Last Updated: 9:46am BST 29/04/2008

Annie Leibovitz, the celebrity photographer, has been accused of "manipulating" a 15-year-old pop star into posing semi-naked for Vanity Fair magazine.

Miley Cyrus, a teen idol and star of the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana, was pictured apparently topless, with a satin bedsheet protecting her modesty.

Miley Cyrus has maintained a squeaky-clean image
Exclusively for Vanity Fair by Annie Liebovitz. The June issue of Vanity Fair hits newstands on May 1st

Initially, Cyrus declared herself happy with the shot, declaring it "really artsy".

Thoughts? I work in a bookstore; I'm horrified to think of the, er, new customers Vanity Fair will get for this issue.

Senusret I 04-29-2008 09:04 AM

She's hot. I'd hit.

33girl 04-29-2008 09:51 AM

OMG ANNIE LIEBOVITZ TOOK EDGY PICTURES I'M SOOOO SHOCKED!!

SRSLY? I mean, I think even my dad knows that if AL does your shoot she's going to push a boundary or two. If you're not comfy with that, go to Olan Mills or something.

Exactly. And it's Vanity Fair. Not exactly 'Teen, you know...

honeychile 04-29-2008 11:08 AM

I think the photo is very elegant - but it is of a girl of 15. Shame on her parents for leaving her alone with AL and not thinking Miley would be talked into something like this!

It's her age that bothers me, not the photo.

Honestly, I don't think the photo is really that flattering. And from what I read, her parents were there through almost all the photo shoot. They left and a few final photos were taken, including the controversial one.

I don't think Vanity Fair is the proper media venue for a 15-year-old Disney sweetheart, but obviously her manager thought it was okay.

lyrelyre 04-29-2008 11:48 AM

I think the photo was fine. I'm really not even fussed that she's only 15, I mean, she's a 15 year-old who attends red carpet events and is growing up in Hollywood. She's going to be a little more cosmopolitan and sophisticated than a young lady growing up out of the spotlight. If I hadn't heard so much about it I might have thought it was just a strapless, low backed shirt. Further, her fan base doesn't exactly read Vanity Fair. The only reason they're interested now is the media firestorm.

Quite frankly, I find the picture of her laying across her father in a midriff shirt far creepier.

Ewww, she's 15! ;) Hey, I know of a compound in Texas you might like to visit... ;)

Is it me, or does she look really, really young in that last ("controversial") shot? I normally don't have an issue with even younger stars taking pictures like this (because they seem to be the standard thing to do and they usually make them up to look 24 anyway), but her face in that picture REALLY looks like a little girl to me and that's what I think makes this shot a little on the creepy side. And she's either got to admit she's trying to break out of the "all-G" image she has or just stop doing photo shoots like this and putting stuff up on her myspace (her parents or agents should just shut that thing down) if she is really trying to preserve her current image, because she can't have both in the long run.

33girl 04-29-2008 11:54 AM

I think the point is....it is her manager and/or parents who need to be raked over the coals for their bad choice....not Annie Liebovitz or Vanity Fair.

Obviously. She won't be 15 forever. And Disney kids seem to end the most messed up, this might actually be a good career move.

I'm sure we'll know when we see the sales figures for her next album/movie/franchise thing they sell to teenagers

lol. I agree. I couldn't imagine taking a picture like that with my dad. I think he'd be all awkward and weird about it the whole time. That photo looks more like a couple's engagement photo rather than a picture of a father and daughter.

co-sign. There is no way they did not sign off on the photos that were used.

epchick 04-29-2008 06:12 PM

Didn't Miley take racier photos by herself?

SigKapSweetie 04-29-2008 06:31 PM

Disney's Official Response:
"Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."

Looks like they're going to stick by their teenybopper this time. More here:

macallan25 04-29-2008 07:08 PM

Does Disney have its head stuck up its ass?

She took photos herself with some guy and posted them on the internet that were much worse than those.

Dumb skank.

Considering the fact that Disney still supported Vanessa Hudgens after nude photos surfaced, this comes to no surprise.

texas*princess 04-29-2008 07:25 PM

I think it is really creepy of a 15 yr old to pose like that... (and I'm also going to admit, those creepy pix of her & her dad are scary too).

I honestly think she's doing it (or her parents were saying the shoot was OK) because her Dad wants to pimp her out for as long as he possibly can since his career didn't work out too well... hence the "best of both worlds" Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus concert/CD. She's always been known as Hannah Montana and she's not getting younger, neither are her fans, so she's trying to broaden her fanbase so she can be marketed differently and still bring in the dough.

All my coworkers are predicting a Lindsay Lohan/Britney Spears episode a few years down the road...

jitterbug13 04-29-2008 08:22 PM

I've seen better pictures and I have also seen worst (and I agree that the one with her dad is creeper that the shot with the sheet). What 3 to 10 year old is going to go out and buy Vanity Fair? The kids wouldn't have known if it wasn't on TV every five minutes. And did we just forget about Jamie Lynn? This could be a whole lot worst.

Someone said this maybe a good move because she is 15 and she won't be doing Hannah Montana forever. Maybe this will help her grow her fan base. I remember when people were mad that Hillary Duff left Lizzie McGuire when she was 15-16. Her fans have gotten older with her and it works. I can't see Miley being in her mid-20s still doing shows on Disney Channel like some others. *cough*RavenCheatahGirls*cough*

I also agree with t*p as well. I don't think she will turn out to be like Lindsey because I think she's more level-headed than that, but maybe like Mary-Kate and Ashley.

I don't necessarily consider this level headed.

jitterbug13 04-29-2008 10:55 PM

At least she's not shaven her head and trying to attack photographers with her umbrella. :p

nittanyalum 04-29-2008 10:56 PM

^^^Yeah, and not like Mary-Kate and Ashley are all that normal either.

Not to sound like a pedofile, but I have seen worse by what my little sister shows me on her friends' myspace pages. That is typical of what I have seen of that age group according to stupid myspace pictures. Kids that age want attention from their peers. That is what those appear to me.

Now, are they smart to take when you are an international star? No!

Give it a few years....lol.

I feel bad for all these teen celebs. I can't think of very many who ended up ok meaning they're not messed up in the head as adults or they don't have a drug problem. Brooke Shields, Ron Howard. Is that it? My mind is going blank.

nittanyalum 04-29-2008 11:06 PM

^^^Rick Schroeder! I love me some Ricky. :)

lilzetakitten 04-29-2008 11:11 PM

Mowry twins, but they're not in the spotlight so much anymore. Drew Barrymore managed to level out.

Tia & Tamara Mowry (and their brother Taj)
Ben & Fred Savage
Candace Cameron-Bure
Alyssa Milano
Sean Astin
Elijah Wood
Jodie Foster
Christina Ricci
Haley Joel Osmont
Jaleel White (Steve Urkel)

These are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head

jitterbug13 04-29-2008 11:55 PM

Tia, who is on The Game, just got married recently. Tamara still does some acting.

I was thinking this morning by the time Drew was 15, she had already been in rehab! Still love her. :)

A lot of child stars did turn out OK, but those are the ones that don't make the news.

KSUViolet06 04-30-2008 12:02 AM

If anyone is to "blame" for the photos, it would be her parents, not the photographer. At her age, her parents HAD to agree to with those photos since she's not 18 and I'm sure she doesn't manage herself.

Tia and Tamara are still very much in the spotlight. :) Beautiful and talented young ladies.

BabyPiNK_FL 04-30-2008 01:03 AM

LOL Jitterbug! Those Cheetah Girls are ALL grown. Kiely has a baby for crying out loud! They need to go back to 3LW.

Miley HAS taken worse pics by herself and those types of pics are very typical of a tween/early teen myspace. It's so sad...

But that does not stop me from jamming to her CDs, at least the lyrics are wholesome even if she can't be. Celebrities are not role models, parents should stop freaking out over this and raise their damn kids because Disney channel and Nickelodeon are not going to do it for them.

As for her father, his country music career is doing well. He has no need to live off her. He just did a tour and had a CMT reality show to cover it. And he hosted the CMAs (with her, but he still hosted). He also is on her show so he's getting his own paycheck for that. I really think more or less them working together is an excuse for them to be together, not for him to ride her coattails. I liked her more b/c who her dad is. I was shaking my toddler booty to "Achy Breaky Heart" and watching "Doc" before I ever heard of Miley Cyrus.

She has a baby? They're over 21...but still....

BabyPiNK_FL 04-30-2008 01:23 AM

They don't mention it ever anywhere! But Kiely has a son. They do a good job at keeping it under wraps. I was a huge 3lw fan so I remember hearing it and being like what?! I believe she addressed it briefly. It was during all that down time they had before they had the falling out with Naturi.

Kellie Martin
Tiffani Thiessen
Kirk Cameron
Soleil Moon Frye

Danica McKellar (Winnie from The Wonder Years) has a Ph. D. in physics from UCLA I believe. (fun fact, she is also an ADPi).

a.e.B.O.T. 04-30-2008 06:16 AM

Tina Yothers
Michelle Trachtenberg
MJ Fox
Melissa Joan Hart
Amanda Bynes
Joey Lawrence
Keisha Knight Pulliam
Raven Simone
Neil Patrick Harris
Kim Fields
Shirley temple
Sean Astin
Elijah Wood
Hayley Mills
Anna Paquin

PS--- Haley Joel Osmont doesnt count... he is currently on probation for dui and marijuana pocession. (he was still underage at the time too)
PSS--- Kirstin Dunst might qualify. She checked herself into rehab, but it has been said it was stress and Heath Ledger's death related... it has also been said cuz she parties hard, but the truth never really reared its head so we don't know

I consider that 15... or is she 16 now. Lol, she is at the age where she wants to be sexy and show her midriff, etc. Its a common phase with girls, look at the unmonitored myspace pages of anygirl 17 and under
