Are you the only person involved?

IlovemyAKA 04-26-2008 05:28 PM

If you are within that stage of approval, host some events on campus to get others interested. Also, contact members of your church. Some of them are bound to business savvy & interested. Good luck, and please let someone proofread any information that you distribute.

If you are in Buffalo, contact members of Malika Kambe Umfazi Sorority, Inc., and Alpha Beta Sigma Sorority, Inc. They were both founded at SUNY Buffalo and should have some people in the area you can speak to for ADVICE.

You might need a constitution and bylaws, a pledge ritual (or other ceremony to mark the beginning of the pledging process, a ritual of initiation (or other ceremony to mark the beginning of membership, a shield or coat of arms, a pin, colors, etc.

I'm sorry, but I just have to say that I find it hard to take any organization seriously if they're still using a yahoo.com (or even hotmail) email address.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. We keep things cost-effective, keep the price of our overhead down, and pass that on to our members. Unlike other councils that have alot of overhead and over-publicized, we at the NAGC work closely with our members , help them to solve their organizational problems on a daily basis, not just at conventions, and manage to do it at a fraction of the cost. Any council can have a flashy website, but will they go in the trenches for you , fight right along side you in this anti-greek environment in which we face on our campuses today. Yes we are simple, plain, cut to the chase, but I tell you this, no council will fight harder for your right to maintain or appropriate your org's presence on your campus, help you fundraise, help you get nationally incorporated, help you construct an annual budget report, help you with the press and school administration the way we at the NAGC do. We have the passion for Greek Life like no other. We don't just give you a membership card and a pretty website and leave out there to fend for yourselves, we fight the fight with you and help you to win.

Thanks for the heads up. I went and edited it out. Initially I'd leave it in there, but since the phone # didn't match the one on her website, it'd be better to just take it off.

I know how hard and how expensive it is to have a meeting place in New York even to just have a business meeting.

I am going to be renting a basement apartment in Far Rockaway, Queens just for me to chill at a couple times a week. So since I am not going to be living there on a consistent basis it would be cool for a small chapter between the size of 2-9 people who want to meet up and do business meetings or pledge meetings or just to hang out and chill that would be cool. Since you are my greek brothers & sisters I am renting the space out for only $30 per day. If you rent on a consistent basis I will make a discount for a monthly rental use. Monday- Friday days are almost always guaranteed days for rental. Weekends are probably a time that I would most likely use it so advanced notice for weekends is needed so I can see if I can make it happen, which most likely I will if given advanced notice.
So Anyone in New York interested email me:
meikojihanharris@yahoo.com

I will get back to you asap.

Thanks,

Much Greek Love,

I just want to know what it is that I have done to offend you that you would continuously make inferences to every post I have put on this board previously. I am just trying to spread greek love and unity. Also network with people that share love for greek life like myself. Why are you trying to create this stir over this one posting that I left earlier trying to offer help to an up and coming organization. I said nothing derrogatory about you or your organization, though you are continuously trying to make humor of my council, and drag up postings from a year ago for what?
I'm just trying to get your attention so you can try to steal my man and my girl.

Building a new Organization

Hi Demar.

Starting a fraternal organization is usually not an easy process and maintaining it can be even more challenging, depending on what kind of organization you are going for. With Christan/Business as your orientation, it sounds as though you are seeking a specific group of people to come on board, so your recruitment will need to be aimed at those types of people.

My Fraternity, Gamma Beta Lambda is relatively young - 45 years this October -but 45 years has been a time of challenges, off and on, for us too. Our fraternity has been on an even more challenging road in that we are not college specific; That is, we are not exclusively a university based fraternity. Also we are a specialized type of fraternity as well, which has led to difficulties in recruitment at times.

I think that analyzing your specific 'target' group of potential 'rushees'/ Pledges, along with a thorough look at the area/institution type you are at will help a lot.

Hope that helps a bit.

Regards

Mike

Trying to start one and in distress!!!

HEEELP!!! I am super motivated about starting a GLO but i am slowley getting discouraged. i had the perfect name for her and everything and then 2 months in to the process i find a 40year old GLO of the same name. Sometimes i am so very tempted to join another sorority but i have been through that n found nothing i have felt good with ( thus my reasoning for starting one). If there are any incouraging words out there in greek land i am ready to hearum lol

frustrated and disheveled in NJ

Greetings all!

I am the Executive Director of a non-profit youth organization in Brooklyn, New York. I started this organization in high school as a means to provide positive activities for former gang members and "misfits". Much to my surprise, the organization grew by leaps and bounds, even attracting kids from other countries who joined us by correspondence. My organization (1City) provides free activities for youth in grades 4 to 12 and is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary and in those 20 years, we have served more than 2000 kids with little funding. The clubs that 1City provides includes basketball, cheerleading, fashion design, praise dance, flag football, double-dutch, toddler modeling, hip-hop dance, business, drama, choir and step. Our step team has even had the honor of performing at Madison Square Garden several times.

Some of the kids who aged out of the program approached me and asked if I could create something that they could be part of into their adult lives. I put the request back into their hands and told them that I would back any idea that they came up with. They chose to start a fraternity, because that structure closely resembles what my organization provided for them throughout their childhood.

The fraternity, Sigma Theta Rho, is in its beginning stages and was recently incorporated. We are only now starting to develop the organization's identity, but have already attracted 35 members! Once the idea was "put out there" in my community, we attracted parents, grandparents and even some of my volunteers who never had the opportunity to pledge during their college years. Our members range in age from 18 to 50 and we also have a "junior extension" of 11-17 year olds. Happily, all of the members are hard workers and despite the mix of ages and backgrounds, everyone works and plays well together. I'll bet you can imagine how entertaining our meetings are.....

I am posting this thread to say, "Thank You" to everyone who regularly posts and to every organization that is represented here. The information that I have gleaned so far has been invaluable and I hope that one day, our little organization will join your ranks and set excellent examples for the new organizations that will be formed as time goes on.

May you all be blessed beyond your biggest dreams!

Doc
