Which sorority would you join?

I'm sitting at work...bored out of my mind! The films are coming too slowly for my taste, so I've thought of a new thread.

Now...imagine you are 18 again (or 17 in my case) and you are going through recruitment at a university with 25 NPC sorority chapters (all but the one of which you are a member!) Which NPC group would you pledge and why?

Assume that each chapter is equal in all respects except what you find on their (inter)national websites.

I'll have to post back later once I decide!

ComradesTrue 04-24-2008 07:32 PM

Okay, I will bite.

Philanthropies that I would most want to be a part of:
ZTA (Komen for the Cure/other breast cancer causes)
DDD (St. Jude)

Superficial stuff, such as I like their colors, letters, symbols, etc:
Kappa
Pi Phi

I don't know if I can narrow it down to one, but if really pressed, I suppose that DDD would win because I just think that St Jude is the best philanthropy going.

Whereas now I am sure that I would be swayed by things such as creeds, mottos and the like, as well as emphasis on scholarship, and alumnae programs, as an 18 year old these did not rank high on my list. So my list today would be different than the above.

Scandia 04-24-2008 07:44 PM

Holy guacamole, what a question!

The one I thought I wanted before going through Recruitment at UF because of things like philanthropy, colors, and mascot would have been Alpha Delta Pi.

Nowadays:

- Delta Gamma has two chapters in my city, as well as one at UF and one at FSU. It has chapters at every school I have attended. So I would have lots of sisters to hang out and be friends with.
- Zeta Tau Alpha has a very meaningful philanthropy given that more than one relative of mine are breast cancer survivors.
- Alpha Xi Delta and Kappa Kappa Gamma have philanthropies that deal directly with what I do for a living.

Basically, all 26 NPC organizations are fantastic and have great things. But I would not trade Theta Phi Alpha for anything in the world.

ohmyloveisaphi 04-24-2008 08:00 PM

I COB'd and the toughest decision of my life (at least thus far!) was choosing between Kappa Kappa Gamma and Alpha Phi when I got bids from both... so if I wasn't a part of lovely A Phi I'd for sure be a proud Kappa!

chitownxo 04-24-2008 08:32 PM

As much as I love the cardinal and straw of Chi Omega, if I had to make a choice, I'd be torn between 3 groups...

1) Alpha Xi Delta - I love their philanthropy, their Quill is my favorite badge, and I just like the way the letters look together.

2) Theta Phi Alpha - I love their moto and their colors.

3) Delta Phi Alpha - Every DPhiE I've ever encountered has been a class act, and it would be an honor to their sister.

texas*princess 04-24-2008 08:45 PM

If I had to join any GLO other than my own, I'd join:

1) Phi Mu - For a few reasons:
* They are our Magnolia sisters!
* Their philanthropy is awesome!
* I love pink
* I love that Sir Fidel and Alphie are like best friends
* The blinged out Phi Mu badge is awesome!
* I like their selection of sorority jewelry!
* "To lend to those less fortunate a helping hand. " is the first line of their creed and I tend to volunteer and help others when I can

2) Zeta Tau Alpha
* I love their philanthropy
* I am a Princess, and I like crowns

AOII Angel 04-24-2008 08:45 PM

Yea! I'm so glad you guys have posted! I had to think really hard to answer my own question.

I'd pick ZTA for the badge and the philanthropy.
I'd pick AGD for their dedication to fighting diabetes...a disease that is very prevalent in my family.
I'd pick KKG because I love blue, fleur-de-lis and their badge.

In the end, I'd go for Kappa because not only do I like their insignia, but I really admire how advanced their alumnae network is. That definitely wouldn't be a factor as a 17 year old, but after 11 years of alumnae status, it sure is now!

katybelle04 04-24-2008 08:58 PM

this is definitely a tough question! but a good one! i would have to say that i weren't a ZTA I would like to be either a Kappa Delta or a Delta Zeta!

Kappa Delta because:
-We just went through extensions at our school and I met some of the National officers who were AMAZING! (Betty Mulkey is my HERO)
-I love their prevent child abuse america, and the national women's friendship day
-I love how strong they are nationally and the willingness to help that I saw amongst their collegians that came down for their extension presentation

Delta Zeta because:
- I LOVE their colors... they are my fav!
- All the DZs that I met at my previous school were so sweet and so nice!

DreamfulSpirit 04-24-2008 09:04 PM

I'm a member of a service sorority who never went through a formal NPC rush. But if I had to make a decision based on other things, these are my pics:

Delta Gamma: I'm an education major, and their philanthropies seem to focus on various aspects around that.

Alpha Chi Omega: A really close friend of mine has been a victim of Domestic Violence, which is their philanthropy.

Sigma Kappa: My favorite color is purple, and they do stuff for Alzheimer's which my grandmother died from complications of.

Alpha Xi Delta: their colors are the same as my sorority!

BadCat25 04-24-2008 10:54 PM

Gamma Phi Beta - best looking badge
Kappa Kappa Gamma - best sounding name

Fleur de Lis 04-24-2008 11:01 PM

What a good question!

AOII - I'm crazy about red and would love an excuse to wear red all the time

ZTA - I see five-pointed crowns everywhere now, and every woman deserves to wear a crown. :)

Tri-Delta - Amazing national reputation, strong alumnae network, and incredible number of famous alumnae

OleMissGlitter 04-24-2008 11:22 PM

Alpha Chi Omega--Love their badge and I would love to learn all of their songs

Theta Phi Alpha--I'm Catholic and I really like their badge too.

Alpha Gamma Delta--Because their philanthropy is about "defeating diabetes." My fiance's mother passed away last May due to complications with her diabetes.

Delta Gamma--I think it's cool that they were founded in Mississippi.

Cutie_Hootie 04-24-2008 11:37 PM

Kappa Alpha Theta--love their badge, their symbols, their philanthropy, and the fact they were founded at DePauw and are headquartered here in Indiana. Also, some of my very dearest friends are Thetas, and they are awesome!

Alpha Delta Pi--I love their badge (especially all the choices in jewels!), their history, their philanthropy, and the Prides they have in each chapter. Also, I love that they can have a stickpin guard--it looks really cool with their badge.

Theta Phi Alpha--As a Catholic, I love the fact they were originally founded for Catholic women in order to give them a chance to belong to a society at a time when there was great prejudice against Catholicism.

However, I know in my heart I was meant to be a Chi Omega!! :)

Leslie Anne 04-24-2008 11:39 PM

Wow, really difficult question.

It's hard to create a mental blank slate. My love for the Farmville Four just can't be erased so I'm already biased in favor of one of the other three. That's a really tough decision but I suppose I'd go with ZTA because I've had the most contact with them, I love their philanthropy and, overall, they just rock.

On the other hand, I also really admire Theta Phi Alpha. I love their creed, their work for the homeless and especially their Catholic heritage. I'm very drawn to TPA.

So, I guess it would be either ZTA or TPA. I couldn't possible choose one.

brunetteddd 04-24-2008 11:58 PM

Tri Sig. Because my mom was one and they don't have a chapter at my school.

:)

Jimmy Choo 04-25-2008 12:00 AM

I would pick either AOPi or Phi Sigma Sigma.

epchick 04-25-2008 12:02 AM

I'd chose Pi Phi b/c I love their philanthropy, their colors, mascot, etc.

Before I joined A-Phi, I had wanted to bring Pi Phi to my campus! lol.

violetpretty 04-25-2008 12:23 AM

If I had to join any other NPC on my campus, it would be Delta Gamma, Alpha Delta Pi, or Zeta Tau Alpha, since those were the other chapters where I was invited to pref, and reflecting back, I would have been happy in any of them. But that's not the question...

I've actually reflected on this before, and it really made me appreciate my sorority as a National organization and how I feel I found a great fit on both levels instead of just my chapter (which I love dearly). Sometimes I wonder, if I had gone to XYZ University, what chapter would I have joined? I think most NPC women could say that they could be a member of most/all of the 26 NPCs if they had attended a different school (Not dual memberships, just the "What if I joined at this school?") With an imaginary school with every NPC but Sigma Kappa, and local "fit" equal, I would probably pick one of these:

Alpha Chi Omega: I really like the symphony, their background in music, their dedication to the arts, and (in more shallow things) they have one of the prettiest badges in the NPC. They appealed to me during recruitment because I liked that their philanthropy (prevention of domestic violence) was something that helps women, which I think is appropriate for a women's organization. (Not that other philanthropies aren't relevant to women specifically, many of them are, this one just speaks to me.) I also like their tagline: Real. Strong. Women. The chapter at Maryland is particularly well-rounded, high-achieving and diverse. I met an AChiO in one of my classes first semester along with a SigKap and 2 Zetas, and it was their friendliness/laid back/genuine attitude that strongly influenced me to go through recruitment.

Kappa Alpha Theta: What really stands out about Theta to me is that the circumstances of their founding are so similar to Sigma Kappa's. Their founders were first women at Indiana Asbury, and came together to support each other when they were ridiculed by teachers, classmates, and even other women who went to finishing school. I love how Bettie Locke Hamilton demanded equal rights as a woman! I feel like today, they are really connected to their values, at least the Thetas I know IRL. The chapter at Maryland wasn't a fit for me, but they are so strong nationally; it seems like there is a Theta chapter at nearly every prestigious university. Being a Pittsburgh sports fan, I really would have bled black and gold if I were a Theta. And of course, I love their badge!

Kappa Delta: This is another sorority that I view as a progressive women's organization that encourages women to reach their full potential. I particularly like their work with the girl scouts, because it is important to serve as good role models for young girls. I also like the Stand Up, Stand Out! program (I know most NPCs sponsor it, but KD and ZTA organize it at my school) and their support for the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. They also celebrate National Women's Friendship Day, reminding us what our organizations are all about. They also have a very active alumnae chapter in DC and seem to have very active alumnae across the country. The chapter at my school wasn't really a fit for me, but they have a strong tradition, hands down the most beautiful chapter house at Maryland inside and out, and some of the most dedicated alumnae at Maryland. I know several Maryland KD alumnae who are 70+ and still go to alumnae events and keep in touch with their sisters! Plus, I just love green!

Pi Beta Phi: Pi Phi had closed well before I attended Maryland, so I don't actually have personal experience with a Pi Phi chapter, and I don't know any Pi Phis IRL (actually I found out a friend from middle school joined Pi Phi but I haven't talked to her since then). I like them on an international level though (and the fact that they are international). I like their philanthropy promotes literacy, and I like "cultivating sincere friendship" (is it the official motto, unofficial, or a mission statement?). I think that's what all GLOs strive (or should strive) to do, and Pi Phi put it very aptly. Their colors are pretty (maybe I like them because they are similar to Sigma Kappa's?) and so is their badge. I especially like the one with alternating garnets and aquamarines!

Also pretty high up on my list in no particular order are Delta Delta Delta, Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta. I admire so many groups, but I had to whittle it down!

APhi4Ever 04-25-2008 12:27 AM

If I could join another NPC, I would choose to join:

Delta Delta Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Delta Pi, or Phi Sigma Sigma

Hopeful_Bubbles 04-25-2008 08:30 AM

Since I'm unable to edit my past experience out of my decision, I'd definitely lean towards Pi Phi.

SigKapSweetie 04-25-2008 08:38 AM

During recruitment, I was torn between Sigma Kappa and Pi Phi. I made the right decision for me :), but if I hadn't gone Sig Kap I would have been a Pi Phi angel!

lilzetakitten 04-25-2008 08:44 AM

Theta Phi Alpha. I like their philanthropy, their Catholic heritage, their creed, and I really like the penguin. Plus, I've seen on chapter websites that their patron saint is St. Catherine, who is the saint I was named for.

NutBrnHair 04-25-2008 11:07 AM

Tough (but fun) question! Everyone knows I'm so pro-Chi Omega, but if I had to choose...

Kappa Kappa Gamma or Pi Beta Phi

Based on their national reputation and quality leadership.

ForeverRoses 04-25-2008 11:19 AM

When I was 17 I wanted to be a Kappa Kappa Gamma- a woman I babysat for was a Kappa and I looked up to her as a role model.

Plus the Kappa HQ are in Columbus and I used to drive by their home when I would go downtown.

But since they didn't have Kappa at my school, I was on my own!

It's what I've gathered from multiple people's comments. Anyways, I try not to judge this is just what I hear.

Can anyone tell me how national reputation is determined?

I think it's in the eye of the beholder.

To me, overall quality of active chapters, choices of campuses with active chapters, consistant, solid national leadership, quality of programming.

There are certainly others who fit this criteria, but personally, I have a negative bias for various reasons, so I picked Kappa and Pi Phi!

I think Nut means national reputation in terms of strength (like what she listed) rather than being nationally known for having lots of chapters full of pretty blondes.

baci 04-25-2008 12:06 PM

NutBrnHair made a solid point that national reputation is somewhat in the eye of the beholder. We can each critique and decide various groups that are strong based on our own factors/judging scale. There really is no uniform scale - just as you can't make a statement as to which sorority is the best at a university/college. KWIM?

I would like to hear what some of you fine ladies think are the strongest organizations nationwide. It would also be wonderful to hear how and why you based your decisions.

I will be honest, some of the national sororities I know very little about just because they may not have a presence in the area(s) in which I have lived. Yes, I may know a small amount about them, but because of their presence or lack thereof I am not familiar with them.

What I love about Greek Chat is I try to learn a bit more about the oirganizations that I know so little about. To me, I find this to be very interesting and it also the reason why I have asked the above question.

Scully 04-25-2008 01:04 PM

I love AEPhi and it would be so hard to choose! I believe it would fall between:

Sigma Sigma Sigma who also has a chapter at my alma mater. They were some of girls I connected with during Formal Recruitment. I really love their motto, "Faithful Unto Death" and the mystery behind the skull and crossbones. The badge is absolutely beautiful.

I also find myself drawn to Alpha Sigma Alpha's four aims of intellectual, physical, social and spiritual development and to their creed, "...To find dominant beauty in art, literature, nature, and friendships, To know the peace and serenity of a divine faith..."

Scandia 04-25-2008 01:22 PM

I have thought some more about this:

- I like Sigma Kappa's colors and dove symbolism, as well as their Inherit the Earth philanthropy.
- Alpha Chi Omega had a lot of people I knew be members of this organization. And to me they have the second prettiest badge after Delta Gamma. And their philanthropy is fantastic- prevention of domestic violence.
- Tri-Delta is a very solid organization that has a great sisterhood and philanthropy program. Plus I love dolphins so much.
- Kappa Delta not only has a white rose and an emerald, but a women's self-esteem campaign and a philanthropy to prevent child abuse.
- I like Phi Mu's colors, mascot, and symbol. And they are very Southern as well.
- I like Pi Beta Phi's literacy and art philanthropy, as well as their colors.

Every GLO has something appealing about them. Some of them to me more than others. But I know I have made the right choice and feel right at home.

Back at you Babe! I would choose first Alpha Delta Pi for a lot of similiar reasons...

*They are a Macon Magnolia!
*Azure Blue is one of my FAVORITE colors :).
*Their badge looks as good blinged out as Phi Mu and they both have hands on them.
*Our mottos are the same essence.."Faithful Sisters" and "We Live for Each Other".
*Everyone loves a Lion!
*Their philanthropy goes hand in hand (there is that holding hands again!) with ours...Ronald McDonald Houses located at CHILDREN'S HOSPITALS (CMN).
*I believe in ADPi too!

pinkyphimu 04-25-2008 02:20 PM

I would probably pick...
AOPi- I remember looking through websites a few years ago and I was just really drawn to them.
Pi Phi- I just adore the badge.

Ole Miss Phi Mu 04-25-2008 02:49 PM

That's a hard one. If I had to pick something else, it would probably been KD. I really admire their philanthropy and the fact that they seem really close as sisters.

Actually, a fleur de lis is an iris. It's just a stylized version of it. There's no real flower that is called that.

Ok, now my turn. I know I say this way too often on GC, but I was in a local that became a chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. We chose between them and Kappa Alpha Theta.

Having said that, I was very impressed with the poise and traditions of the Theta women. I like the way their letters look together (silly, I know), and I feel like they have a very classy reputation.

I also like Pi Beta Phi. Maybe it's a Monmouth Duo thing? :p

princessjv 04-25-2008 06:39 PM

Probably Tri-delt, kappa kappa gamma or delta zeta for mostly superficial reasons, i love their badges, colours, sound of their names, and symbols.
i'm also a big fan of their philanthropies.

aephi alum 04-25-2008 07:14 PM

Tough call.

Going just by what's on the inter/national web sites? Phi Sigma Sigma, as the first non-sectarian sorority. It doesn't hurt that I love their symbols.

Going by people I know IRL? Sigma Kappa. There was a chapter at my school, which for various reasons I didn't join (obviously), but in the absence of my chapter I think I might have found my home there. Also, my next door neighbor is a Sigma Kappa and she's very sweet.

Going by interactions I've had on GC? That would be a very tough decision indeed.

AGDee 04-25-2008 07:23 PM

I think that what I've learned over the years as an alumna and especially here on GreekChat, is that we are all more similar than we are different and I'd find sisterhood and happiness in any of them.

baci 04-25-2008 07:46 PM

Oh, good answer. I agree with you.

But when I am flipping through catalogs, the Kappas tend to have the best options for beautiful jewelry or decorative items based on their flowers, symbols, mascots, etc.

Not that I don't love my roses, pearls, and squirrels or that I'd choose a sisterhood based on shopping options.
