Krispy Kreme v. Dunkin' Donuts - The Final Showdown

In one corner, we have Krispy Kreme, since 1937 delivering arguably the most popular glazed donuts, now with 0 trans fat.

In the other corner, there's Dunkin' Donuts, since 1950, serving breakfast foods, donuts, and great coffee -- much of it 100% fair trade certified.

Then there's "other," which needs no introduction.

(This is for cheerfulgreek and I swear to God I'm not a sleeper-cell stealth marketer)

SWTXBelle 04-16-2008 11:00 AM

You know, if you had called it the Final Countdown,it would have a theme song. :)

DSTCHAOS 04-16-2008 11:09 AM

KK all the way.

Whoever voted for DD is going to hell with gasoline draws on, on a slow moving Greyhound bus that's leaking gasoline and all the exits are bolted down.

Oh, all that extra stuff won't matter. The DDs are so heavy, they'll be sinking fast.

ForeverRoses 04-16-2008 11:11 AM

I still love KK, even though the store near me just closed and was turned into a Tarbucks.

ree-Xi 04-16-2008 11:11 AM

I don't do donuts, so I have to vote Dunks hands down. I'll have a medium coffee with skim milk and extra sugar, and a plain bagel, not toasted, with cream cheese on the side.

DD are hell on earth.

Kevin 04-16-2008 11:16 AM

I only get donuts when I'm studying for finals. When I do, there's a local bakery called "Brown's" which makes a fine product. They also provide my wife with a few dozen free donuts which she sells at school to support her newspaper program.

Yay! Make sure you vote though.:)

honeychile 04-16-2008 11:30 AM

KK, but only when they're hot. I like the fact that they're smaller than the doughy DD.

But there's a place up the street which makes wonderful doughnuts.

You know, as soon as I saw the title of this thread, that Europe song popped into my head, too!

I'm a DD girl, through and through. There are currently 3 stores within walking distance of my house. That is all I have ever grown up with. We didn't get a KK in my neighborhood until 2001 - and that store has since closed its doors. I have not seen another since then. I'll admit, I've tried one KK donut. Not my thing. And my father, a retired cop, never had the taste for them either. I think that says a lot!

Plus DD coffee is the best on the planet :)

Point of clarification:

Is this poll asking which doughnut is better -- KK or DD -- or which place people prefer overall? I thought it was the former. (Okay, consider the coffee that DDs are meant to dunked in if you want.)

Not that the result shouldn't be the same either way. :p

ComradesTrue 04-16-2008 11:45 AM

People actually buy donuts at DD?

KK, no doubt about it.

I picture heaven as streets of gold with Krispy Kreme donuts lining the way. Because, in heaven, there are no such thing as fat grams.

33girl 04-16-2008 11:58 AM

Krispy Kreme were decent until they started putting them in every 2 bit convenience store on earth. Now they're just sugary & sticky & YUCK.

nikki1920 04-16-2008 01:25 PM

That's what I don't like about them. We had some for the staff meeting and they tasted like dough flavored sugar.

AnchorAlumna 04-16-2008 01:32 PM

I'm a Duncan, but I was raised on Krispy Kreme!
Besides, we have no Dunkin Donuts in my area. I've only tried them in Atlanta. If I'm going to commit fat, I'd rather go with KK. :D

Oh honey....NEVER buy them in a convenience store! Those are old. ONLY buy them AT Krispy Kreme, and ONLY buy them when they're hot!
Otherwise, you might as well buy the Dunkins.

RaggedyAnn 04-16-2008 01:43 PM

This is a difficult one. Dunkin definitely has the best coffee, but the donuts have gone down hill since they started having them delivered.

HBADPi 04-16-2008 01:44 PM

I'm a DD fan through and through as well. Growing up there was nothing like getting to go to DD and pick out a box of your favorite munchkins. I love their coffee and bagels and miss my DD runs on my way to work every morning. I wish they'd come back to CA.

Random sidenote but did anyone know that down in Lima Peru they have DD stores? My friend just got back from there and I found it hilarious you can get munchkins in Peru.

You can get them delivered? I've been away too long...

I think she meant that they're delivered to the stores, not made on site.

Seriously. Never by them unless the place you're buying them from has a Hot Light

http://www.shopcrazy.com.ph/wp-conte...t-is-on-01.jpg

and the Hot Light is on or still warm from being on. Fortunately, if the Hot Light's off, you usually don't have to wait too long for it to come on again.

Leslie Anne 04-16-2008 01:59 PM

I love donuts!!! I've been good though and haven't had any in a few years. KK donuts are too sweet for me and a little too gooey. I love Dunkin'.

DSTRen13 04-16-2008 01:59 PM

Who buys Krispy Kreme from a convenience store?? I mean, seriously ... those aren't REAL Krispy Kreme. REAL Krispy Kreme are the ones from the Krispy Kreme shop, hot and delicious.

As for Dunkin Donuts ... I am not a very good cook, but I've made my own donuts that are at least as good if not better than Dunkin Donuts. We don't have any DDs in Savannah any more, and I don't miss it.

RaggedyAnn 04-16-2008 02:01 PM

You are correct MysticCat. They used to be made on site. I went for a tour in girl scouts back in the 70s. We got to make our own donuts-the original dunkin kind-which they don't even make anymore. Remember the originals had a handle to make it easier for dunkin? At least where I am from, they have a delivery truck that comes every day with the donuts.

33girl 04-16-2008 02:08 PM

Well, if you have to put all sorts of disclaimers on them (don't buy them from certain places, only buy them when hot, etc) they're not very good, are they? ;) They should have never diffused the product like that in the first place.

I think we only have around 3 KK stores around here now, and none are anywhere near me.

Army Wife'79 04-16-2008 02:16 PM

KK's literally melt in your mouth if they are hot. Very delicious. If I had to have a "cold" donut, I'd go with DD's choc with choc icing with coconut or nuts on top. Cold KK's are not worth eating once you've had the hot ones.

But if you buy them from the Krispy Kreme store, they likely will be hot. I mean really, the only real disclaimer is don't buy any food from a convenience store or gas station, because it's pretty much going to taste like it came from a convenience store no matter what it is.

And I'll even bend the "only buy them from the store" rule a little. KKs have long been used for fundraisers for school groups, and the ones I've bought that way have always been just fine.

But even from a convenience store, KKs are better than DDs. :p

KatieKate1244 04-16-2008 02:28 PM

I've never had a DD donut, but I can't stand KK (even when they're hot and fresh out of the oven). It's like eating a glazed hockey puck. Jolly Pirate donuts for me!

RU OX Alum 04-16-2008 03:18 PM

i voted for dd because of only their flatbread bfkst sandwiches (the coffee is good too, though)

my favorite donut is the crueller sometimes called kruller or french kruller

Both places used to make good ones, now neither place does :(

but i might try them again, maybe

DSTCHAOS 04-16-2008 05:12 PM

KK is winning.

Close the poll.

scbelle 04-16-2008 05:23 PM

KK... seeing as how my mom was addicted to them when she was pregnant with me, I guess it's in my blood. Oooh, how I wish I had a glazed doughnut right about now.

Me too. That's probably another reason I don't care for DD... I got called Duncan Donut one too many times in my youth!

SWTXBelle 04-16-2008 06:08 PM

I think it is interesting that many DD supporters cite the coffee, or something other than the doughnuts, in their rationale for picking DD.

Amen!

Heaven on earth is a Krispy Kreme donut fresh off the conveyor belt. Sigh.

AGDLynn 04-16-2008 09:04 PM

KRISPY KREME!!

Unfortunately there's not one near me so I go to DD although very rarely.

Has anybody actually said their doughnuts are good?
