We wallpapered half our room in cool contact paper (not to mention covering the bottoms of the yucky drawers)

Go to the Bank and buy some 1-2 rolls of quarters NOW so that come laundry time, you are well prepared for the coin-operated laundry machines!

• SHOWER SHOES
• extra lighting--sometimes the dorm-provided overhead and lamps aren't enough!
• detergent/fabric softener/laundry bag--IF you're doing your own laundry
• extra shelves and/or storage boxes

Those, among others, were some of the stuff I had forgotten and didn't realize it until it was too late. Plus, I had to buy all the stuff around campus--which was an arm and a leg.

This seems real obvious, but pillows!!! I always forget my pillows! Also, extra hangers because you never realize how many clothes you have until you go to put it away.

Before I moved in to college the first time, my mom and I made a list of ever possible over the counter medication I could need and put it in a big file box. Every year, I check it and restock as needed. You would not believe how much sudafed or tylenol costs on campus. Some suggestions of what to put in your box:
*allergy/sinus medications (sudafed, benadryl, nyquil)
*painkillers (tylenol, advil)
*first aid supplies (bandaids, rubbing alcohol, peroxide)
*feminine supplies(keeps them nice and hidden away from everyone to see http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif )

Other things:
*extension cords and power strips. There are never enough outlets, and they're never where you need them
*duct tape - to keep your extension cords out of the way
*Lysol - the rooms are pretty nasty when you first get in there!
*School supplies - they're waaay expensive at the bookstore, and usually the wal-marts and office depots near campus are cleaned out.
*Camera - to take pics of college life!

--A Box Cutter Knife or general utility knife
--A pair of flathead and phillips head screwdrivers.
--The biggest bag of Animal Crackers you can buy. Nothing's better for middle of the night-gotta eat something while typing a final snack.

AMEN to the extension cords! outlets are never where you need them. Also, make sure that if you have any three-prong appliances, you have an extension cord or something that they will fit in.
Also...
Christmas lights!!!! I found pink and green ones at target at easter and they were so cute.
Drinks and stuff to make kool-aid, ice trays, stuff like that, it gets waaaaaay too expensive getting cokes out of the machine.

OOPS- I forgot to add make sure you know what kind of internet connection you need if you are taking a computer- I needed and Ethernet card and patch cord, and at the Housing office they were $120- at Best Buy I got both for under $30 dollars!

Localsororities- not all dorms come with kitchens! When I lived in the dorm we had a kitchen for all to use and you could get kitchen utensils at the front desk!
Also bring a list of phone numbers-family, friends at different colleges, know the campus police too.

Bring your favorite stuffed animal to cuddle with when you feel homesick - it's college and everyone regresses in a very healthy way so you're allowed!

Everyone has given such great suggestions but here are a few more http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif A small dry erase board for the door of your dorm room. Everyone had one when I lived in the dorm to leave little notes to each other and to let people know when they were in, out, studying, etc. Also some under the bed rubbermaid storage containers. I had a ton of clothes and it always helped to store bulky, out of season items (i.e. sweaters) under the bed where they were out of the way. Also it is really important to keep track of all or your paperwork (bank statements, phone bills, registration forms, etc.) and I got a manilla envelope for each major area (Financial Aid, Bank Statements, School of Music--insert your major area of study there, Miscellaneous) and kept all documentation in those folders. This way it was neatly filed and always at my fingertips.
Also dont pack to much decoration stuff. Definitley take stuff to personalize your space but you're going to accumulate SO MUCH stuff. Especially by joining a sorority. Rooms in Tutweiler are small (I've stayed there before) and it can get very crowded very quickly. Also someone mentioned double sided tape...I used this stuff called sticky tack (or something)--it's yellow and about 99 cents a package---to put stuff on my dorm walls. It comes off without taking up the paint and you don't have to use very much.

You should definitely bring some slippers/house shoes/whatever you want to call them. Your socks will get so gross by just walking around, in your room, down the hall, whatever. These are a life saver.
Don't forget the shower shoes and a shower caddy for your shower stuff.
Remember the alarm clock. You don't want to be late for class.
That's really all that I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned.
Oh..don't bring books from home because you'll never read them. I did this last year, and they just took up space.

DO NOT bring Booze no matter what Brandeis said. 1) It is not allowed in the dorms 2)If you did bring booze it would eventually get passed around and rush is near and that makes it sound like you came to college to just drink.

If you will have any access to kitchen facilities, bring cooking utensils! If not, at least bring a microwave, toaster oven, and/or hot plate (if you're allowed to). You would not believe how much food costs in the cafeterias. I got the minimum meal plan available so I could pick up a cup of coffee or lunch on campus if I wanted, but I pretty much cooked all my own meals. SOOO much cheaper and SOOO much better!!

And bedding - make sure you know if your school provides extra-long or regular twin beds, and bring the appropriate sheets. There are a few schools that provide regular beds.

Ok...soo..here's my bit on what to bring and what not to bring:

Don't bring...
-too many plates and cups and all. YOU WON'T DO DISHES AS OFTEN AS YOU THINK. Trust me. At my school, everyone just took all the disposable styrofoam stuff and plastic utensils from the commons. You will never go back to all your stuff you brought.
-Too many shoes. I brought like 35 pairs and going to school by the beach, I basically wore sandals every day that I rolled out of bed for class.
- Books to read for enjoyment-you will not have time to read them.

What everyone is always borrowing from each other since they forget/run out..
-enough hangers
-detergent
-QUARTERS... this will be your most valued currency in college. You will actually pay a dollar for a 25 cent item just to get those 3 quarters back instead of giving up one.
-laundry basket (to carry all your clothes to the laundry room)
-sweatshirts-the lazy wear of choice. Your motivation to dress up cute for class is dramatically lower than it was in HS. You just want something clean and comfortable for the 9 AMs.
-gym clothes & running shoes(if you work out)
-scissors
-staplers
-first aid kit
-small tool kit
-movies

And what to never forget!
-socks and underwear (You laugh, but I had to have a package of white socks and underwear shipped to me since I was too busy remembering white boards, peacoats and TV/VCRs!It was so pathetic.)
- LYSOL DISINFECTANT SPRAY AND WIPES- You will use this almost every day of your dorm life! I swear. For the random spills and the odor that builds up mysteriously in everyone's dorm.
-Candles from illuminations
-a lock for your laptop and an ethernet PC card
-A car if possible. This depends on where you go to school. If you're heading to the east coast, then don't worry about this. But if you are on the went coast, you will make many friends having a car. Haha.
