New Chapter in the Making!!

Hi i'm Julie or "Jada", and I wanted to create a dance sorority on my college campus. I already have a concept, but I'm stuck on making the name from the greek alphabet. Ya know trying not to knock heads with another chapter.

jada86 03-24-2008 05:20 PM

Any suggestions??

knight_shadow 03-24-2008 05:24 PM

Search the name on google.

Are there no other dance sororities in existence?

Benzgirl 03-24-2008 05:28 PM

Are you talking about Dance Majors or just people interested in dancing?

jada86 03-24-2008 05:34 PM

Dance Majors

jada86 03-24-2008 05:36 PM

Yes there's a dance sorority in existence.

Have you considered membership in that GLO? Starting a sorority is hard work.

jada86 03-24-2008 09:04 PM

GLO?? Refresh my memory? Of course it's hard, I knew that from the get go!!lol

DSTCHAOS 03-24-2008 09:10 PM

GLO = Greek Lettered Organization

Well, uh...why do you need a dance sorority?

knight_shadow 03-24-2008 09:12 PM

GLO = Greek Letter Organization; something you'll need to remember if you want to be a part of one ;)

What would make the organization you create different from the sorority that's already out there? Is there a reason you decided against seeking membership in it?

nittanyalum 03-24-2008 09:50 PM

There's a "dance sorority"?

I bet they totally rule at Greek Week...

LunaP 03-24-2008 09:59 PM

GLO=greek letter organization. I thought I heard of a GLO for dance majors..TAP I think, but I fail to remember if it's Tau Alpha Pi or Tau Alpha Phi. You could try colonizing that one in lieu of starting a new one if you like. HTH!

Nu Delta Alpha is the national honor society for dance. Perhaps bring a chapter of that to your campus?

jada86 03-26-2008 10:03 PM

Umm....tough criticism!! But I can handle it...I will definitely take all into consideration!;-)

knight_shadow 03-26-2008 10:10 PM

I don't really see any criticism in this post

I'm not sure if you saw my question earlier, but is there a reason you decided against trying to bring the current dance sorority to your campus?

Matsimela 03-26-2008 11:03 PM

Well if your heart is set on starting a new org then i guess go for it. but there are some things to consider before you do so, most importantle, what are you going to do that makes your org a different/better/etc alternative to what is already there?
I know at USF you better a have a darn good answer to that question (among others) to even be considered for membership on any of the expanding councils. Just some food for thought. good luck with whatever you choose to do

jada86 03-28-2008 10:18 PM

Oh trust I saw your question!! ;-) I just wanted a sorority for our female students. I attend a conservatory which accepts very few students who are very focus in their art. So why not established something new?

knight_shadow 03-28-2008 10:33 PM

Do you have any other interested individuals or are you planning on doing everything on your own? If everyone (including yourself) if very focused on their crafts, will there be time for Greek life?

And to clarify my original question, what would be the difference between the sorority you're trying to create and the one that currently exists? Not trying to dissuade you from creating this organization, just asking something that will undoubtedly come up.

jada86 03-28-2008 10:49 PM

The school I attend is where we are receiving our BFA(Bachelor of Fine Arts). In the dance division, we are trained from ballet technique to traditional west african movement. Now what sets this organization out from any other organization from other colleges is discipline, dedication, and intense training that we are later pursuing as a career in the dance field. This chapter will use our "gift" to share throughout the community as well as strive to build better dance programs in the school system. My apology if I on a tantrum!!:-) But did I answer your question Matsimela??

Don't apologize; you haven't said anything wrong.

Check out this link. It should give you some guidance.

BTW, what's the name of the current dance sorority that you're aware of?

I do have others that are interested and thought it was a great idea....There will be time for Greek Life, it's not like we live in the studios! lol The difference between this sorority and existing dance sororities, is that we are doing something that we love to do, training going to school for....we eat, sleep and breathe dance, while at the same time, forming a bond of "sisterhood" within the dance field.

jada86 03-29-2008 01:09 PM

Um I think you're confused knight shadow...my apology wasn't to you...lol...but to answer your question, it was Zeta Tau Alpha of Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia. Thanks for the link!!

SoCalGirl 03-29-2008 04:21 PM

ZTA is not a dance sorority. I checked the Brenau website and it appears Tau Sigma is the dance group. It's not clear if it's only honorary or not.

There is Phi Beta which is a professional fraternity focused on performing arts. The question I am asking though is this. Do you want to form a social sorority based on friendship, or one that is focused on helping dance majors succeed in the world? the two are quite different.
