The Body Worlds exhibit

Has anyone ever gone to see it?

I went last weekend and at times it was creepy, disturrbing and fascinating.

Not something for the faint of heart or weak of stomach but give it a shot...

it is probably the most realistic way of seeing workings of the human body short of going to a medical examiner's office

i saw something similar at NIH / nat'l library of medicine a few years back. it was weird but bearable. however the whole shebang like THAT exhibit seems like too much for me to handle.

Kappamd 03-24-2008 10:57 AM

I saw it at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland a few years ago. I think it is a really interesting and different way to learn about anatomy/physiology and it didn't really come off as disgusting the way they had it displayed. I do agree though that people who are very sensitive to that kind of imagery would probably feel very uncomfortable. I would love to see it again if it ever comes back around to OH.

Ah, the visible human project..... I used to work at NLM. :)

Not in person because I don't wanna see that either! EW.

Sister Havana 03-24-2008 11:53 AM

I saw it at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago a couple years ago. It was fascinating.

The creepiest one I saw had to have been the pregnant woman....

I worked as a docent in the Atlanta exhibit. We were part security guards and part tour guides. It was interesting for me.

I have to say though, after seeing Body Worlds and then some of the knockoffs, go to Body Worlds, it's more a combination of art and science, while the knockoffs aren't as well done.

it seems like our circles constantly overlap!

sorry about Georgetown yesterday. :(

Senusret I 03-24-2008 01:33 PM

I know, right?! :)

And thanks.... losing to Davidson was tough. :( The front page of the Post has the men's team in the locker room looking de-jected.

Either way....after seeing that exhibit...cremation is still my top choice of personal disposal....

Taualumna 03-24-2008 04:16 PM

It's still touring?

There is more than one Body Worlds "edition" that tours. For example, the one that came to Vancouver was different from the one shown in the "Casino Royale" movie (and both were "real" Body Worlds exhibits...not knockoffs.)

Thetagirl218 03-24-2008 06:12 PM

It was in Tampa a few years ago, and it caused quite a stir. Charlie Crist then Attorney General( Now Governor and potential VP running mate) acutally banned the exihibt for a while. Then after like a week of being delayed it was allowed to be on display.

I didn't go as it just grossed me out. Not my kind of thing.

PeppyGPhiB 03-24-2008 07:26 PM

I went to BODIES: The Exhibition when it was in Seattle a couple years ago and everyone there seemed to think it was fascinating. I didn't hear any "Ewwwwwwwww!"s, even from the kids that were there. It isn't gross - it's the way your body looks underneath your skin!

On the other hand, I thought the way they were displayed in the Body Works/Worlds exhibit in Casino Royale (around a poker table, etc.) was tacky and seemed to make a mockery of the human body.

ZTAMich 03-24-2008 08:27 PM

Ew. Will not go see the Bodies exhibit or anything like this. EWWW

DaemonSeid 03-24-2008 08:38 PM

Ok...i have to ask for every one that has said 'eeewww' what are your reasons?

Dionysus 03-24-2008 08:39 PM

Has anyone watched the 60 minutes (or was it 20/20) show about BW? It is believed that the bodies are executed prisoners from China, and NOT bodies donated to science. Creepy.

I saw it and supposedly that was one of the 'knock off' ones that had the issue....

I didn't say "eeeew", but when I went to the exhibit, the one that heebed me out a bit was where the guy was holding his skin. That grossed me out and made me think of Silence of the Lambs (for obvious reasons).

It's just gross. I also think it's mildly disrespectful to the dead, but that's just me.

Kevlar281 03-25-2008 02:15 AM

I went last time it was in Houston. I thought it was fascinating. However, anything to do with the baby fetuses I found a bit sad. I think my favorite part of the exhibit was a chicken that had everything removed but its blood vessels.

AlphaFrog 03-25-2008 05:53 AM

It came to Discovery Place here in Charlotte. We were there on the last day of its run. My friend wanted to go, so she went in and took my son, and the daughter and I looked at other things. I can't handle dead things. If my cat catches a mouse and my husband's not home, I will make my dad drive over here and get rid of it, as I hide in the farthest room in the house away from it.

Ok...good point Senusret I because there have been a lot of ethical questions about how the bodies have been obtained and what is being done with them....so....then....even if people do legitimately donate their bodies to this project, do you still think that there is still some disrespect towards them even though these people know what they are signing up for?

Glad you're not in medicine. I loved the exhibit. I also think that the dead signed up for it so it's what they wanted.

I think when you die, you're just a shell at that point.

I adored the man hanging from the still rings in the Iron Cross with all the muscles splayed out. The human body truly is a wonder. BUT IT WAS SO HOT IN THE EXHIBIT. We went December 26th, abnormally warm for a Boston night, and I decided to wear my new thick pink wool cardie from Old Navy and practically passed out from overheating. Damn.

I'd go again though. Absolutely. I am a nerd for all things medical. I think I could pass the NCLEX-RN just by helping my mother review for it. Medicine fascinates me. Plus, it's unlikely I'll get to do gross anatomy in medical school and dissect a cadaver so the exhibit is as close as I can get.

Yes. My values system might be different from most, but I don't believe in public displays of the dead for any reason. (Medical school not being public)

That is refuted here:

I wanted to note that photography is NOT permitted inside the exhibit, out of respect for the bodies. There was actually one guy who was taking photos with his digital camera, thinking he was SO CLEVER. His lack of respect really pissed me off, so I ratted him out to security. NYAH!!!

Are you thinking you wouldn't take gross anatomy because you aren't interested in going to medical school, or because you don't think the medical schools you're looking at offer it? Students at my school (myself included) got to do it as undergrads, though I know it's very rare for pre-med students to have hands-on experience with cadavers. It was an optional course pre-med students could take, not required to graduate. But I think most medical schools would offer you that opportunity.

I'm also fascinated by the human body. It's so complicated, yet it's a perfect, logical machine. I still remember something from my anatomy professor's syllabus: his goal was to get us to "appreciate its simplicity, but be humbled by its complexity."
