Sometimes it's better to say nothing...

The article I linked here is pretty typical; it's the comment below that I found offensive. Scroll down to the end of the article.

http://media.www.laloyolan.com/media...-3271547.shtml

When you post as a member of any fraternity or sorority, you are theoretically representing Greeks in general. If you are going to "fight back" or respond to an anti-greek opinion piece, please least do so with some class. Proper grammar and a statement of argument (as in, "I disagree with what you wrote because .....") would help too. Otherwise, you are just feeding into the sterotypes.

Little32 03-20-2008 10:27 AM

That made me LOL. :o

Leslie Anne 03-20-2008 10:31 AM

Yikes! All I can say right now is thank God "our" unfortunate mouthpiece is a member of a fraternity and not a sorority. Can you imagine having a Tiffany Earp?!?

APhi4Ever 03-20-2008 10:33 AM

Who knows why he posted what he did, it's definitely not representative of the Greek population. This behavior can be shown amongst Greeks or non-Greeks.

AlwaysSAI 03-20-2008 11:09 AM

Why am I not surprised that Earp was the first one to post a response....

DSTCHAOS 03-20-2008 11:14 AM

Please let that be a poser and not the real Tom Earp.

That's an opinion piece and I would have posted it on here for all to comment instead of commenting on the actual article.

jwright25 03-20-2008 12:15 PM

:eek::confused::rolleyes::cool::mad:;):o:)

baci 03-20-2008 12:30 PM

Rise above the article and strive to set greater examples!

Tom Earp 03-20-2008 05:36 PM

So, I just wonder how long it will take for some to finally stand up to this kind of posting of people and writers before some one else speaks up?

You make fun of me when this writer posts things about You, Me, and Other GLOs whether they have no true facts? Just Who Is This Person?

Get off of your dead rears and ask the same thing I did or can you not?:p

You want to complain about Me. Why don't You complain about what this person wrote?

I am proud of what I did and still do as A Greek, are you?

Meow, what is up puddy cat?

Argh!

Are you a leopard and change your spots?

Oh, You are special?

Paging Drolefille!!!
:p

ladygreek 03-20-2008 05:59 PM

The issue should be the article--not Tom's response.

As re-Xi said, the article is pretty typical.

People sing their criticisms and praises of Greek Life everyday.

Frankly, I think it's fair for both to be at issue.

As DSTChaos says, the article is nothing new. Reasonable, and I think persuasive, arguments can be made to refute its claims.

Unfortunately, the response instead resorted to infantile ad homimen attacks (such as "you are are a piece of crap" who apparently "got dished when trying to join a GLO") that do nothing except reinforce the negative stereotypes represented in the article in the first place.

Those types of responses are only great for message boards. :)

the only time I am aware of such articles is when they are mentioned on GC. thus they are not common place to me. but i get your point.

Yes - that was my point. It's perpetuating the sterotype of Greeks as ignorant, callous and vulgar.

Okay, so these types of articles are nothing new. Maybe there is a reason for that? Instead of thinking of ways to refute their claims, maybe it would be more valuable to think about why so many articles like this are written in the first place?

Drolefille 03-21-2008 10:35 AM

Didn't see this one!

How long will it take for people to type poorly spelled insult replies in response to college newspaper articles? I mean clearly this guy was a total Greek reject. I can tell by the pixels. Also it takes until 1:55pm on the day it's published.

You're making fun of ME? But this guy, he's a piece of crap who will write things! I mean COME ON. A PIECE OF CRAP WHO WILL WRITE THINGS!

Yeah, I asked him "what have you done" in between calling him poop and boil-like. Can't you manage that?

I mean, it's not like you're familiar with me and are not surprised that I'm giving Greek life a bad name once again as I rant and ramble.

Calling people poop, and comparing them to a boil I apparently have, thus explaining my crankiness, is something to be proud of. YAY I'm Greek!

Please excuse me while my personalities fight for control of my body.

Because perception is reality.

Because there is always bad with the good.

Because people want to knock Greeks off of their high horses.

Because a lot of people can't think of any other widespread organizations to pinpoint when they criticize something that young adults are involved in.

Because it's politically correct.

The list goes on.
