I have to take issue with these. Especially the red lipstick because it can be a very classic look. The thing is - it's not what you wear but how you wear it. These things I've pulled out of your list can look tacky as all hell. They can also look reasonably nice if done well for the right occasion.

SweetestDiva 06-22-2001 02:12 PM

I absolutely hate red nail polish. Really, I do.

I also really hate white dress shoes. Doesn't matter if it's before or after Labor Day, I just don't like it.

I agree about the guys with processed (straight) hair, but I think low-cut and properly maintained afros are cute. (Like Kobe's!)

Ideal08 06-22-2001 02:13 PM

What's wrong with manicured toes?

Ideal08 06-22-2001 02:17 PM

I would have to say that the worst trend (and it has nothing to do with fashion) is the whole Politically Correct deal. All it is, IMO, is sugar coating what you really want to say. You can't be REAL anymore, b/c reality is not PC. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif Not to mention, it's lightweight controlling. Don't say this, say that. Don't do this, do that. It keeps a lot of stuff hidden, and unknown. That breeds fear. I could go on and on, I'll just stop that now, lol. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

But if you want to talk fashion, it definitely has to be this gold-tooth thing. One, okay, I might give you that. But a whole mouthful? You look ridiculous.

Steeltrap 06-22-2001 02:24 PM

Red nail polish and lipstick are classics, going back to the 1950s. Any fashion book or mag in those days showed that.
Brown and blue look fine together, particularly a chocolate, royal combination.
Now if you want to talk about bad trends, I'd have to say the daisy dukes, gold teeth, tube tops, and booty-crack pants.
When you reference "colored hair," do you mean crazy stuff (like blue) or normal things you get in the salon?

newbie 06-22-2001 04:05 PM

I agree...red nail polish and lipstick can only look trashy/gaudy if you LET it look that way. IMO, the ultimate starlet look is with red lipstick on and red nail polish.

I wore red lipstick to an important event, but I made sure it looked right on me--I blotted it a few times and added gloss on top...so instead of looking like it's "in your face," it looked more subtle. I got soo many compliments on my look.

ANYONE can wear red lipstick...you just gotta have the right application and color. I prefer dark/neutral reds to bright reds.

As for pedicured toes..I think the look is pretty, just as long as the toenails aren't long (yuck)!

About the colored hair, I don't see anything wrong with coloring the hair...doesn't matter if it's blue or just one of those colors that you get at a salon. I love coloring my hair (though they're not the bright colors such as blue, purple, green, etc.).

Steeltrap and Newbie, what I mean about colored hair, is wacky colors like purple and blue. But, natural hair coloring is fine. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

About the manicured toe thing, I'm just a low maintainance person, cliping them is enough for me, maybe polishing them. But, that's just my opinion. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

So that makes it one of the "the worst trends ever?" I can think of MUCH worse trends than having pretty toes. I mean, do you remember the 80s?

KillarneyRose 06-22-2001 05:51 PM

My vote for worst trend of all time goes to the 80's hairstyle that was short and pouffy on the top and feathered on the sides and just fell long and scraggly in the back. Happily, even when that was in style, I never went there http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif

I've never thought of getting a pedicure as being "trendy", it's just upkeep. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

As for the red polish/lipstick, on the right person, it's gorgeous. I also like the chocolate/royal combo too Steeltrap! Tube tops are pretty trendy, but again, on the right person, if done tastefully they can be very cute.

Thanks for clarifying, from a coppery brunette, bottle style.

Sugar_N_Spice 06-23-2001 04:09 AM

What about:
The Jeri Curl (my mom says it's gonna "come back" as a dry curl...I hope not!)
Those canvas tennis shoes the girls wear now in wacky colors (the bottom is plastic)
Heeled-tennis shoes (like the WANTED ones)
Surgical Suits (the 80's was an ugly phase in fashion)
The Mullet (cut it Pleeeease!)
Jeans w/ holes in them (I won't front--I had some!!)
Hoop earring on men (loooooks feminine to me)
More gold in your mouth than on your wrist...
Blond hair on guys (you are not Sisqo ...)

More to come later!

CRMSNTiDEGRL717 06-23-2001 02:14 PM

i TOTALLY agree w/ the gold in the mouth thing. what's up w/ that anyways http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif it looks like CRAP!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

33girl 06-23-2001 03:05 PM

If red nail polish & lipstick are "trends" they're the longest trends ever....

They're not for everyone, but I know when I wear Cherries in the Snow lipstick (a bona fide fashion classic!) I get a lot of positive attention. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

My vote for worst trend ever is when everyone went through that phase of tying their coats or flannels around their waist. WTF was that? I mean, I did that in second grade on the school bus, not in college. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

The makeup faux pas that drives me NUTS is the dark brown lipliner with the clear gloss inside. It looks like you were trying to put on eyeliner and missed.

moe.ron 06-23-2001 05:04 PM

Cross Colour, Ewing sneakers (man those things were heavy), those big earings back in early 90s, perm hair (remember those hair bands back in the 80s?)and those jeans with holes.

That was goofy...my sister did that all the time. I used to make fun of her when she would be ready to go out with a light jacket tied around her waist in the middle of August, when it was 95 degrees out. "Good thing you're bringing a jacket...it's going to get chilly later on."

The worse trends , gee there are quite a few. But red lipstick is a classic, and preety toes, I love my toes so they have to be pretty http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif and Gold chains, umm, a lot of people have gold necklaces and chains(isn't that the same thing)
here are some Bad Bad Trends
1. Mega Loads of hairspray you know when you used to rock that fan shaped bangs in the 80's
2. The straw Hat thingys(if your in MD or Baltimore rather u know what I am talking about)
3. used jeans and cross color( the brand)
4. Gold, Bronze, Platnium teeth(it's not cute in the least bit
5. MC Hammer Pants (need I say more)

About the cross colours thing, i have a quick anecdote. They were big in what '92-94? at least in the midwest? i don't know, i was in JH then, but i think i remember a couple of older guys i knew having them. Anyway, my senior year, '97-8, we had an exchange student from the netherlands. Cross Colours was almost all he wore. I guess that was just getting trendy there or something. It's wierd how fashion travels. what's popular out east, hits the midwest a few months later, and the west coast even later, after it's gone in the east, and the same thing for what becomes popular out west. wierd.

Yeah, one of my APO brothers does that and she looks awful with it. Buy I wouldn't tell that to her face or WWIII will begin. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Again, I said that the above was just my opinion, I'm not speaking for everyone else. Afros or big hair on guys of any race (Justin Timberlake had one) is just not my personal taste in guys. For example, many guys think that women with hairy legs are unattractive, that is the way our hair grows too. If I offended anyone, I didn't mean to and I'm sorry. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

The statement, without context, sounds ignorant. Perhaps you should have cited Justin Timberlake, or whatever his name is, in your original post.
