Don't take oldu so seriously!

Some of you are taking my threads much too seriously. They are nothing more than interesting information uncovered by someone who has entirely too much free time! I am now retired but have a very efficient assistant who helps me. A non-Greek, she has become totally hooked on our Greek system and its history (I suspect she used to secretly laugh at my sophmoric hobby when we had more pressing work to do.) As a matter of fact the Phi Beta Kappa thread came as her suggestion. She said, "If I were running a Greek organization the group I would most want to mirror is Phi Beta Kappa because they have such high standards." As a former national board member, I thought that was probably about the most intelligent observation I had ever heard. Not knowing what the research would reveal, we did it. Doesn't make any group better than another but it is an interesting bit of trivia. What fascinates me most about our various comparisons is how different the top of the list looks using so many standards. There will be no final "American Idol" winner or parades. You can do your own.

DSTCHAOS 03-14-2008 12:46 PM

Not another "oldu State of the GC Union."

Post your comments in the threads themselves. Stop creating threads to tell us that we're mean or, in this case, that we take you and your threads so seriously. The people who respond to you also respond to threads about funny cat photos and debate about the lethality of marijuana brownies.

We take you with a grain of garlic salt so take us with the same.

Instead of fraternities and sororities -- let's think of the Major League Baseball teams.

Some groups are like the Yankees, or the Dodgers, or the Red Sox. Others remind me more of the Milwaulkee Brewers. All of the teams are a part of MLB.

The Yankees, for example, have a rich history -- been around a long time, many championships, multiple Hall-of-Famers, but some people just hate the Yankees.

If the Brewers ever make it to the World Series -- some will be upset because the TV revenue will not be as much, but others will want to watch just because a smaller franchise made it to the big time.

Wow.

ETA: Let's remember the Red Sox were the "never gonna make its" of the MLB for decades. And the Pats used to be an NFL joke. Both are "top tier" now, though, aren't they?

DSTCHAOS 03-14-2008 01:26 PM

Ha.

So what's a "strong chapter," again, and does that vary by type of organization?

Also, aren't there really great schools for academics and Greek Life that aren't SEC schools?

See why this is really all a gooblygob of gooblygobness?

Absolutely! (reference Phi Beta Kappa thread) :D

ZZ-kai- 03-14-2008 01:45 PM

Oh how wrong you are....ALL of America would watch the Brewers in the World Series, because the Brewers have the best two 'young' players in MLB - Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun. Mark my words here today, Braun will have more HR's than Ryan Howard in 2008.

Oldu, I like your threads, keep them coming - they keep me thinking, whereas the mindless banter threads about Britney Spears and the next American Idol pretty much bore me to death.

I miss Erik Conard. Seriously.

When your name is shortened to "nut" it fits in this context. :p

Except for, y'know, David Wright (25), Hanley Ramirez (24), either of the Uptons , etc. etc. etc. . . . plus every one of those guys except Hanley can actually catch the ball, while Fielder and Braun are historically bad fielders (to the point that over 35 runs worth of Braun's offensive contribution was negated by his butcher duty in the field).

Plus, historically, TV shares are not really based on team quality - so your premise is sketchy at best.

Really, this is a long-hand way of saying this:

I don't even know who oldu is, why is he apologizing? Are you an adult? This thread is absolutely ridiculous.

INTERNET SERIOUS BIZ

nittanyalum 03-17-2008 12:41 PM

AF, I think you're referencing another southern letter snob for whom it apparently does matter the letters, and we're not all in this together. And while she is currently getting praise heaped on her from all corners of GC for being so "representative of the NPC", in actuality, some crests are apparently just not good enough for her to stitch in a hoop.

Gag.
And the name of my city is spelled Milwaukee. Thanks.

SthrnZeta 03-17-2008 02:31 PM

Though those comments smack of sorority snobbery, you have to admit there are vast differences between all of the NPC orgs and some, though not all, would view such differences as making one org "better" than another. Small isn't necessarily bad (like Theta Phi Alpha) but size is believed by most to relate to success. Just my two cents.

NutBrnHair 03-17-2008 02:41 PM

Consider the context, please

Oh, and while we're at it...I respected the integrity of BabyBerry's rush thread, but I do want to say that I'm glad AOII was good enough for her to join and there was no threatening of non-financial support in that case. Hate to think that any of your girls would get stuck in a group where their colors could make up a stoplight or anything.

Wowie your business is so kind to let you use their Computors! Do you go out on calls?

Is your Chaqpter open? How did they pick you to join?

You are so kind to fellow Greeks!

Maybe they don't sell buff floss?? It would certainly be easier to make your daughter rush again than to make your own floss.

Although if I ever make a comment to Earp that include the words Butt Floss, I expect to be banned immediatly, because no GCer deserves that kind of mental picture.:p
