Give me a Guinness, I'm Irish!

Herewith we celebrate all things Irish, just in time for St. Patrick's Day!
http://photos-i.ak.facebook.com/phot...95016_8124.jpg One of my favorite pictures from my trip to Ireland this summer . . .

catiebug 03-10-2008 10:01 AM

Have more than one!

http://www.theirishpub.de/Bilder/guiness.gif

BTW, my 15th wedding anniversary is St Patrick's Day! We were even married at St Patrick's Episcopal Church (a clever way to get married in Lent is to get married on the church's patron saint's feast day). My husband is 100% Irish (all four grandparents came over on the boat), so I figured if we got married on St Patrick's Day, he could never forget our anniversary.

SWTXBelle 03-10-2008 10:26 AM

Soooooo clever, catiebug!

bejazd 03-10-2008 10:34 AM

Enjoy the Guinness but leave room for a nice boxty and for a lovely Irish coffee, folks.

And here's my favorite Irish blessing:

May those that love us, love us,
and those that don't love us, may God turn their hearts,
And if he doesn't turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles,
So that we shall know them by their limping.

SWTXBelle 03-10-2008 10:40 AM

I actually have that blessing in my kitchen, bejazd!:)

ForeverRoses 03-10-2008 10:46 AM

I have that blessing hanging up on my fridge.

My middle son's middle name is Patrick (does that make sense?) and this is the first year he has really been aware of St.. Patrick's day. We are going to bake soda bread and shamrock cookies for his saint's day

PM_Mama00 03-10-2008 11:37 AM

Ok so what's the deal on changing St. Patrick's Day this year? I read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick's_Day

"The date of the feast is occasionally moved by church authorities when March 17 falls during Holy Week; this last happened in 1940 when Saint Patrick's Day was observed on April 3rd in order to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and will happen again in 2008, when it shall be held on 15 March.[2]"

So, when are people celebrating?

catiebug 03-10-2008 11:57 AM

Do you really need an excuse to enjoy a nice, tasty Guinness? Celebrate on both days!

We are celebrating on Saturday (March 15th) but mostly because it's the weekend and I'll have the time to make stuff.

bejazd 03-10-2008 12:25 PM

We are having an outdoor movie party Saturday... first Waking Ned Devine, followed by the Committments.

anyone have any other great Irish movie suggestions for me?

ktbug10474 03-10-2008 12:51 PM

yepyep... i'm heading down to good ol savannah, georgia for a crazy, fun time on river street for st. patty's day.

if you live anywhere near georgia .. go ahead and make your reservations for a savnnah hotel next year and come down and enjoy the fesitivites... SAVANNAH IS SOOO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!! this will be my 2nd year in a row going and can't wait for spd2k9!!!!!!

and here is the Irish Philosophy

There are only two things to worry about,
Either you are well or you are sick.
If you are well then there's nothing to worry about..
but if you are sick
There are two things to worry about
Either you will get well or you will die
If you get well, there is nothing to worry about
If you die, there are two things to worry about...
Either you will go to heaven or hell
If you go to heaven there is nothing to worry about
but if you go to hell...
You'll be so busy shaking hands with friends
You won't have time to worry.

SWTXBelle 03-10-2008 01:37 PM

I actually celebrate more like the actual Irish (at least until recently - they've started to import our celebrations) - quietly, with Irish food and St. Patrick's Breastplate and story. I hate going to a pub - I call it "Amateur Irish Night" - too many drunks for my taste. I did end up chaperoning Gypsyboots when she was a wee thing dancing for my sister's Celtic band - but that was really it for me.

I think they just mean the Catholics will celebrate Mass and the feast on the 15th. Doing it the day after Palm Sunday makes too busy of a week for them.

Wife is having surgery on the 17th. I wonder if they'll have Guinness at the hospital...

Our last evening in Dublin a couple years ago, we had a special tour and dinner at the Guinness Brewery, and some beer in the bar on the top floor. It's the tallest building in Dublin. Beautiful.

Mrs. DA and I have a picture of ourselves with a similar background as the picture above. I'd go back to Ireland in a heartbeat.

SWTXBelle 03-10-2008 05:50 PM

Hope Mrs. DA has the luck of the Irish, and her surgery goes well.

http://photos-l.ak.facebook.com/phot...94971_7543.jpg I believe this is the view you mentioned - here's my daughter Gypsyboots at St.James' Gate - the Guinness Mothership!

I think it's a poor excuse for people to "celebrate" a saint and go out and get wasted. Most people don't even know anything about St. Patrick.

Plus I'm a little bitter that people just brush off Columbus Day. Let us dagos have a special day!

SWTXBelle 03-10-2008 05:52 PM

Italy and a saint's day

That would be St. Joseph's day, PM Mama. See, you have your own saint's day!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Joseph%27s_Day

Thanks.

That is the place, indeed.

We stayed at Sheen Falls Lodge in County Kerry for a while, shown here:
http://www.sheenfallslodge.ie/images...all_pics_1.jpg

We had most of this view out of the window of our suite -- If you look very closely, there a beautiful stone bridge in the background:
http://www.sheenfallslodge.ie/images...cs_sharp_1.jpg

Then we spent three days in Dublin less than a block from Trinity College.

http://www.starwoodhotels.com/pub/me...1314ex2_md.jpg

It is made up of three former financial buildings, and is in a beautiful location within walking distance of a lot of stuff.

catiebug 03-10-2008 05:56 PM

When I lived in Santa Cruz (lo these 13 years ago), Stagnaro's, a restaurant on the wharf, always had a big Columbus Day festival. :p

I'm sure LucyKKG could tell us if they still do.

Oh yeah and I get pissed when people pinch me if I'm not wearing green. I guess I'm the Grinch of St Paddy's Day!

SWTXBelle 03-10-2008 06:45 PM

Gorgeous photos, Delt - I'd go back in a heartbeat, too.

I'm not Irish.. but hell, give me a Guiness anyway!

icelandelf 03-10-2008 07:31 PM

Father's Irish. We'll celebrate all weekend. I celebrate most days of the week with a nice ice cold Guiness, but often prefer a Black and Tan, (carefully layered over Harp.) We'll be watching Michael Collins as our film of choice this year!

Actually a Black and tan is made with Bass ale, and don't order them in Ireland you get dirty looks from the barmen. :) What you're talking about is a half and half over there.

Anyhow, seeing as how we got married in Ireland (Dundalk - where they brew Harp!) my husband and I look forward to St. Patrick's day, but it's amateur night mostly, so this year we're (well really I'm - but he talks while I cook, so we works) making an Irish dinner and having some friends over. We've got vegetable soup (the Irish made the best veggie soup ever, so I got a couple of cookbooks), brown bread, and steak and Guinness pie.

Both the man and I like our Murphy's much better than Guinness though.:D

SWTXBelle 03-10-2008 08:16 PM

Don't they dye the river green in San Antonio? (Not that I would want to be on the Riverwalk then - it would almost be as bad as Cinco de Mayo ). I'll do you one better, 'elf - I prefer Strongbow to Guinness!

I am interested in a Guinness Chocolate cake recipe I found - hmmmm . . .

You mean that gorgeous hymn? I love it--"I bind unto myself today the three names of the Trinity"...

aephi alum 03-10-2008 08:22 PM

A black and tan can be made with either Harp or Bass. The Guinness, of course, is a must. A black and tan in a half-yard or yard glass is an impressive sight.

My mother tells me that when she was in med school in Scotland, it was common to see on a patient's chart, "One pint Guinness, hours of sleep." (Some patients preferred sherry.)

When I was growing up, my mom prepared corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day dinner, followed by Irish coffee. I hate, loathe, and detest corned beef and cabbage. But I had two choices: choke it down or go hungry. These days, we usually just make some Irish coffee.

Bushmill's 1608

To celebrate Bushmill's 400th anniversary, they released a limited-edition premier Irish whiskey. Now I love to sip Irish whiskey, but this 1608 is so smoooooooth.

I actually have no idea. I know where that is, but I don't think I've ever eaten there. I should check it out next year.

Yep, they do indeed dye the river green. The city officials then call the Paseo del Rio the River Shannon for the weekend and they'll have the annual St. Patrick's day river parade on Sunday. We went on the pub crawl one year, but this year I think we're going to stick to playing at Hoolihans.

I've never had Strongbow before--would love to try it.:)

We spent last St. Patrick's Day in Savannah. It was a lot of fun, including lots of drinks!

SWTXBelle 03-11-2008 04:01 PM

Someday I want to go to Jackson, Mississippi for the Sweet Potato Queens fun and frivolity!

Fawn Liebowitz 03-11-2008 04:27 PM

One of my friends is a Sweet Potato Queen - she has shared some stories and pictures from the St. Paddy's Day Parade/Million Queen March festivities - it's something she looks forward to every year. I was hoping we could go together this year but she had to cancel...maybe next year!
