BET's Sorority Do's and Don't's

First of all, BET should stay out of the NPHC, period--they are notorious for that. I have witnessed it before. I doubt they got approval to post our shields on their site... Their reasons to post anything like this is beyond me.

I view it as telling them what kind of members my Sorority is looking for. I doubt they really reviewed all the D4 Sororities' membership requirements.

I also think it is missing the concept of the African American sorority movement. Although suggestions are to present this kind of information, i.e. high gpa and saying sober, these kinds of things should be seen as common sense!

My question, will BET donate anything to our International causes? Will they be donating to EAF? The Delta's water care campaign in Africa? The Zeta's Z-HOPE? The Sigma Gamma Rho's Africare programs?

Well here is the site...

Quote:

Posted March 3, 2008 - Are you considering joining a sorority at your school? Here is a list of important do's and don'ts.

Do’s:
  • Make sure you're seen involved on campus. You definitely want to appear confident and nonchalant, but don't overdo it. The ladies may think you're trying to be all that, and you could end up being black-balled. Keep in mind that while you may be fierce, you're being watched. And the ladies are looking at you to see if you have what it takes to represent.
  • If you're hoping that your name will be added to the list of chapter members of whatever sorority you choose, do yourself a favor and make sure you're at all of the sorority's events, and be punctual. The ladies need to know your face and believe that you are serious about the organization.
  • Be discreet and privately let one or two of the sisters in the sorority know that you're interested. When you tell those two, you can rest assured that the rest of the sorority will get the word.
  • Be fierce in anything and everything that you wear, including your hair, and make sure you have a GPA to match. If your GPA is not at least a 3.0, wait until you can get it there. While the rules may say that you only need a 2.5, if you come to them with that, they may not consider you grade-A quality for their sorority.

    Don'ts:
  • Stay away from sporting your favorite sorority’s colors. Don't show up at the sorority's rush or events wearing the sorority's colors. It’s considered disrespectful.
  • OK. So you may love the frats – the parties, step shows and dances they put on. But if you know like I know, you’d better not appear to be a groupie. The last thing you want is for the sorority to look at you like the "easy girl."
  • Stay sober.
  • Don't go around telling all your little girlfriends what sorority you want to be a part of. They just may be the ones to set you up for failure.
  • For God's sake, don't act pressed to be a part of a sorority, or you'll catch the heat for that later.
  • Stay away from groups that refer to themselves as sisterhoods and wear paraphernalia, like fraternity sweethearts. Don't be caught in those organizations, or you can forget about being a part of a sorority.

::nodding my head on it all::

i dont understand BET at all. why is this their first order of business for Women's History Month?

Little32 03-05-2008 11:14 PM

Who wrote this? Is she even in a sorority (even if she were, she could only speak for her sorority--if even that)? Have the respective headquarters been contacted with regards to the use of our shields?

Booooooo BET!

That is just skrait ugly... BET is notorious for doing things inappropriately with the NPHC affiliates... This might take another silent boycott again!

How in their right mind would they fathom thinking that anything like this is appropriate without contacting at least the NPHC HQ. Dayum!!!

That's turrible... it's not that hard to go to any of the NPHC Natl websites and at least find the crest. The author can't be Greek!

Our crest is not on our National website due to our Internet Guidelines; it shouldn't be on chapter or regional websites either. The only website is the NPHC HQ site; I surmise that they received special permission. In fact, BET appears to be violating our internet guidelines....then again, maybe that is why they used an incorrect one so that they are not 'technically' in violation...*sigh*.

jojapeach 03-06-2008 11:18 PM

And Tracy Stokes' name is just out there loud and proud.... This article is just in poor taste, not to mention using shields and symbols. These networks need to stop using us doggone it. *smh*

well do we keep leaving ourselves open to be used?

Touche, soRHOr. I'd love to see a defining, precedent-setting lawsuit that would teach these for-profit entities that our organizations are not just sitting around to be used at their convenience. You would think the large donation made to the MLK National Memorial Fund by the people behind "Stomp the Yard" would be enough of a wake up call. Even the debacle with Converse should be a lesson. But I guess not.

No. BET has pulled this BS before. So don't be shocked... The AKA's crest and sheild are NOT be used on non member related documents or websites either.

If it were me, I would expect a hefty payment in our International Non Profits and projects we support...

Though this is an issue that is deeply personal to the Greeks, it reflects a larger problem and that is that the entire Afro-American community is being used here (again). A better question would have been "Are you considering going to graduate school?" In fact, with the educational challenges we face, they should have simply asked “Are you considering going to college?” along with a prepared list of Do's and Don'ts that advise high school aged kids on how to get into and GRADUATE from a four-year university. This is BET, though, and its grip on what is going on in the black community has long since slipped away. Anything about black America that can be made profitable for them is used; they do it with BGLOs just as they do with HBCUs, not to mention our music, food, faith, and femininity as women. Your organizations can sue, and perhaps our universities too, but unfortunately virtually everything else remains vulnerable to defamation, misrepresentation and commercialization.

Well, I don't have an Afro, my husband has one--more like a shag, but I use Design relaxer, it is a preference. ;)

You are right on the rest of the bolded. Most of the Divine 9's icons are trademarked and require requests to use them outside beyond the membership. And since BET is using the incorrect icons, symbols and likened images regarding our organizations, they could have requested by our International Bodies, HQ, and NPHC representatives to ASK our permission to discuss anything related to membership.

The issue is how does one who is totally clueless pursue an alternative to recruitment based GLO for the NPHC? I think that kind discussion will arise separately with some level of transparency overtime. But for now, it is each individual organization's mandates per their website and other public documents.

All I can say is that it was a lot harder when I joined my Sorority than it is now...

1)Thou shalt know throughout time, will come all knowledge of all things that will be revealest unto you at the twelveth hour. 2)Thus, membership hast its privileges for thy dearest secrets thus we are sentinel in regards to it. 3)Therefore I sayeth unto you who hast questions without searcheth knowledge and without seeketh truth standeth on the quickesth of sand...

A GC DO: Post your initiating information in the appropriate thread.
A GC DON'T: skip the appropriate thread and dig up a post from thread from days gone by (I got Sworn in...)....it looks questionable.

BET gave some helpful info for people who are interested in joining a org. I wish I had read some of those tips when I was a freshman in school. Oh well, that is over and done with, and I'm off to Grad school and there's no use in me revisiting the past. :)
