Divine 9 For Obama t-shirts

Sorors,

In my opinion, these shirts are really close to posing a threat to our tax-exempt status. Here is the link: http://divine9forobama.com/dst.html. I know I certainly won't be purchasing one!

LatinaAlumna 03-05-2008 03:59 PM

^That's exactly what I was wondering about (how it might impact tax-exempt status). We were having this discussion last week.

Senusret I 03-05-2008 04:00 PM

Wow, they even used Fortitude.

I bought a shirt that says "Ba-rack the Vote" in black and gold. Subtle, but doesn't violate our trademark or our tax-exempt status.

Some folks just want to make a buck. That's sad.

DSTCHAOS 03-05-2008 04:13 PM

These shirts are as dumb just like names for groups like "(insert org) for Obama"

Our orgs aren't endorsing candidates. Period. Don't even get it twisted A LITTLE BIT.

It's an attempt at making money and marketing a candidate behind organization names.

Not to mention the shirts are tacky ("Devastating Divas" annoys me, anyway). If you're a Delta who likes Obama, do that without affiliating it with Delta. I can't wait until this damned election is over so people can get over the annoying Obama phone calls, email forwards, tshirts, blah blah blah.....

Lastly, that link spells "Devine" and "Delta Sigme Theta." They can go to hell for that.

I might have bought a shirt that was just red and white with Barack the Vote or whatever they say, but the Delta references/allusions won't get purchased.

LOL @ can go to hell for that.

And just think we haven't even got our phone calls yet. Or at least I haven't.

NutBrnHair 03-05-2008 04:29 PM

Awww...and I was just about to ask why the NPC was left out of this effort?! :(

pinkies up 03-05-2008 04:34 PM

I think the AKA shirts are cute. They don't have any of our letters or symbols; however, I don't think I'll be purchasing one either.

Because the NPC doesn't care about black people.

Ditto and ditto. People will try and capitalize off anything. Come up with a better and more acceptable marketing strategy that does not involve piggybacking off the reputation of others.

Will you get phone calls if you are on the Do Not Call list? Cuz I meant everyone. Politicians are not exempt. Obama is cool, but not cool enough for my peak minutes.

I know you have more sense than to wear the Devastating Divas shirt. :p

I haven't gotten a call but I know some people who make calls for the campaign. I don't know if they only call registered Dems or whatever but I'm not on that list. :) I have been getting those annoying Obama emails from multiple sources.

It would have been a plain old shirt that they sell anywhere. I promise.:D

5Knowledge1913 03-05-2008 08:03 PM

NPHC has sent an email letter to the owner of this company telling them to stop by Friday or a lawsuit will be filed! Good, quick, work!

I cannot figure out how to attach a copy of the letter to this post! Sorry.

The Ivy is not a symbol?

I didn't see the Ivy until just now. When I looked at the shirt the first time, I was just looking for AKA; however, they did put the correct number of pearls on the shirt.

Velocity_14 03-06-2008 12:28 AM

Naw....that shirt gets no love! I do not and can not speak for Delta Sigma Theta...I can only speak and vote for myself. Then it said 25% of the proceeds will go to his campaign...just 25%? Its funny what money can do....oh well...I'm out..

DSTKellie 03-06-2008 02:09 AM

Love Obama. Hate the Shirt.

Do you know if you can request a different color combo in the Ba-Rack the vote shirt?

My opinion

I actually like the shirt and I bought it...I feel what everyone is saying about making a buck off the orgs but I liked the fact that 25% went to the campaign and that it is cute. I heard yesterday about the letter to the company so I probably won't even get the shirt if they are told to stop making them...

This is why there needs to be a centralized "force" to keep companies from making and distributing these things. Individual members can't be left to their own devices.

Individual members can't be left to their own devices? Hmm, okay...while I said I understand the point being made about companies making money off the orgs and that it could be a "slippery slope" but that is something that is already done with vendors all over who are not getting clearance from nationals. I see thongs with letters on them and I know that no one's nationals said that was okay...I made the decision to buy the shirt because I think it is for a good cause and it, in my opinion, did not represent the org in a negative light.

Until it came to buying this shirt. ;)

These things aren't up to what individual members think are cute or cool. That's why we have national entities and the NPHC body to regulate these things where individual members and those who inappropriately want to profit from us lack the ability to do so. ;)

Ms Public Service 03-06-2008 02:25 PM

Does anybody know if the person who made the Tshirts is a member of Obama campagin?

Hey, I am not trying to be nasty here and I am guessing by the ;) you put by your comments you aren't either but I offered my opinion just like everyone else not attacking anyone. You don't agree with my decision and that is fine, I am not asking you to. ;) I do understand your point and I have stated that several times in my posts.

Once again, this isn't about individual members' opinions. It isn't about whether you and I agree or disagree.

Score another one for our national bodies' ability to regulate where individual members can't see the forest through the trees.

Wow. I think this is a bit much, I do understand that nationals' regulate these things and I can see the forest through the trees, I am not just some lil' girl who just joined an org because of cute t-shirts. I am going to leave this discussion alone though because I think it has become nasty and that is not what I come to this board for.

I never asked for that and I probably never should have posted at all...I stated in my first post in this thread that I understood your point. I never asked anyone to hold my hand through my purchasing of the shirt and I certaintly have never intended to be rude to you or anyone else--I was just hoping for the same respect.

Well, in a thread where we are basically dismissing the shirt, a post from someone who bought the shirt (not just thought it was cute) could be received a certain way.

I haven't typed anything rude to you as far as I'm concerned. But life is grand.
