Daughters of this and that

Honeychile's genealogy bad baby name thread made me think of genealogical groups. Who here belongs to any "Daughters" or the like (i.e. Colonial Dames)?

I am in Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of Norway, and First Families of Tennessee and Texas. I'm eligible for Daughters of the Republic of Texas but have to get the Mexican land grant translated and a few other proofs.

Anyone else?

honeychile 03-05-2008 01:22 PM

There's been a lot of talk about this in the past, the longest thread here.

I'm a member of the DAR, UDC, and First Families of Pennsylvania, and am readying applications for the First Families of Virginia, Colonial Dames, and the Mayflower Society.

I'm not familiar with the Daughters of Norway. What's that about?

SWTXBelle 03-05-2008 02:04 PM

www.daughtersofnorway.org - it's for descendents of Scandinavian countries (not just Norway) I'm trying to get icelandelf to join . . .:)

catiebug 03-05-2008 02:30 PM

Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy and Daughters of the Republic of Texas (all through the same line, no less!).

nittanyalum 03-05-2008 03:21 PM

No Daughters of the Middle Class I can join anywhere? Or Daughters of Descendants of Immigrants Who Were Just Glad to Get Off the Boat Alive? No? Dang.

;)

You'd be surprised! Honestly, there seems to be a lineage group for anyone you can imagine! I've seen lists that are up to 100 pages long, including Ellis Island immigrants, potato famine immigrants, every ethnic group, etc. It's truly amazing, and the snob factor just isn't there anymore.

I have a sister-in-law whose family is big in the DAR and they are some of my favorite people in the world so I wouldn't assign any "snobbiness" to any of the groups, I just don't quickly identify with any of them (but I'll look into that Potato Famine one ;)), so I was really just joshing about. Back to your muskets! ;)

LucyKKG 03-05-2008 04:04 PM

You know I had to jump in here...hooray for Norwegians!

I sang at a Daughters of Norway Christmas party when I was 11 or 12. :-)

Army Wife'79 03-05-2008 04:31 PM

We are DAR members. D can be in the UDC but since she's still in college, just hasn't gotten around to it. I looked at the Norway website and am wondering why they're mostly out West. I think 99% of the population of Minnesota would qualify for membership. That's where all my Norweigan relatives are. (and yes, you betcha, they all talk like the movie "Fargo" dontcha know?)

There's also a huge Norweigan population in the San Francisco area...I know that there are a few of them here on GC!

aopirose 03-05-2008 04:58 PM

Here ya go. Something for just about everyone.

http://www.hereditary.us/

I just completed my son's paperwork for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Still working on mine for the National Society Daughters of the Union 1861-1865, the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 and the National Society United States Daughters of 1812. I had the applications for the Order of the First World War and the First Families of Louisiana around here somewhere but they seem to have dissappeared.

Apparently, according to my dad whose has the complete paper trail, I am eligible for DAR and the Mayflower Society to start. Not really interested in doing that. Phi Mu is enough for me.

LOL!! :D Yep!

But my grandmother's name is on The American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island! Count for anything??? :p

Actually, I just found out by taking a look at the link aopirose posted that on the other side of my family I'm eligible for membership in the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 and Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic. I wonder what the difference is.

DSTCHAOS 03-05-2008 07:14 PM

This is really interesting. I don't know how far back my family's "paperwork" goes.

Just looking at the website posted made me exhausted. Soooo many groups to look into and some of them are invitation only. I guess I'll pass. :p

I was quite interested in the Associated Daughters of Early American Witches. Not because I qualify but because it shows that there truly is a place for everyone.

SWTXBelle 03-05-2008 07:29 PM

I too was surprised there weren't tons of Minnesota lodges of Daughters of Norway . . . and one thing I like about the groups is the preservation work they do, and the historical contests and scholarships they sponsor. While there isn't an alumnae chapter of Gamma Phi nearby, there is a UDC chapter, so I get to interact with women I otherwise wouldn't. This Saturday is our food drive - oooo, that reminds me - I need to go stock up for it!

Beryana 03-05-2008 08:24 PM

I am a member of DAR, Daughters of 1812, Continental Society of Indian Wars, Daughters of Colonial Wars, Daughters of American Colonists, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 (and the other CW stuff), First Families of Massachusetts, Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, Colonial Dames XVII Century, New England Women, Dames of the Court of Honor, Sons and Daughters of Pilgrims, Colonial Physicians and Chirurgiens, and Old Plymouth Colony Descendants

Societies I'm eligible for (the dues REALLY start adding up!):
Founders of Ancient Windsor, Founders of New Haven Colony, Colonial Dames, Loyalists and Patriots, Guild of Artisans and Tradesmen, Presidents and First Ladies, Colonial Daughters of the 17th Century, Colonial Clergy, Antebellum Bench and Bar, Winthrop Society, and Daughters of Norway (just found out that one in this thread!).

Societies that I am SO close to being eligible for:
Mayflower (1 generation missing documentation!), Magna Charta, and Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons & Daughters of the Kings of Britain (and I'm sure there are some others as well!)

SWTXBelle 03-05-2008 08:29 PM

We need a GC Daughters of Norway chapter. Icelandelf, do you hear me??:)

How do you prove you're a decendant of an illigetimate child? The child would had to have been ligitimatized (?) at some point, right?

My ancestors were legitimized when they were in their 20s when their father married their mother - Joan Beaufort, daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and Katherine Swynford. I believe the ancestor just had to have been born illegitimate - I'm not sure, though because I haven't looked to closely into it. I still have one generation to prove in the entire line.

SWTXBelle 03-05-2008 10:39 PM

So, alas, even though my boys are direct descendents of Mary Boleyn, and "legend" has it that the father of their ancestor Henry Carey was indeed Henry VIII, they would not qualify.
It's still a good story, and would explain a lot . . . .

I had ancestors on both sides of the Civil War. The families were still fighting it when my mother was named. Can you imagine those in-law problems??

Exactly! That's why you join chapters that are out-of-state!

Don't you just love those Mormons & their penchant for genealogy (even if you disagree with the "why")? ;) And the dues things is one of the real reasons I don't dig up a bunch more.

I know this one little old lady who has this long bar, with minature badges for each of her societies. She had things like "Daughters of Chaplains of the War of Your Choice", the same thing with doctors & camp followers - some really obscure ones!

As for family mottos, I'm just so sure that mine is "Never Leave a Paper Trail"!

Oh, we've got one of those too! And each of her 'big' ribbons has a dozen ancestors at least! Talk about bling! LOL

I'm actually going to be resigning some of my memberships because I can't afford all the dues that are due the same time of year - $20-60 a piece gets expensive VERY fast! It is definitely fun collecting the stories, though. :)

SWTXBelle 03-05-2008 10:53 PM

lol, honeychile. My husband is the genealogist - but has yet to do my DRT work. Every year I ask for it for my birthday, Christmas and anniversary. Hmmm . . .do you think this is the year I get it? :) DRT is the one I want the most!

catiebug 03-05-2008 11:54 PM

DRT rocks!

minDyG 03-06-2008 07:23 AM

Wow. I wish I knew enough about my geneology to look into any of this stuff.

My sister and I found out we were direct descendents of Geoffery Chaucer...anybody know of a DGC? Ha.

SWTXBelle 03-06-2008 09:37 AM

DGC

If there isn't one, you can always start it!

aopirose 03-06-2008 09:58 AM

I also found this one for the International Society of Sons and Daughters of Slave Ancestry. The site hasn't been updated in some time but the concept is interesting. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilissdsa/

I was quite interested in that one as well. However, my ancestors who were in Salem during that time testified against Job Tookey, one of the accused, and weren't "witches" themselves. So I don't qualify :(

Excellent site! I try to work on somebody's else's genealogy (almost) as often as my own, as I'd like to get my certification someday, and I need the challenges.

One thing that absolutely fascinates me is the Thomas Jefferson/Sally Hemings connection. I'd read a lot of articles about the discussion about "who's allowed to join whatever the Thomas Jefferson society is called and who's not. I don't remember the exact quote, but at the first meeting where Hemings descendants were welcomed, the president of the society made sure that he went over to two of the ladies to make them feel at home. He then said something like, "I really hope the society opens their minds and accepts you," to which the ladies said, "Oh, no! We know we have the lineage. We're here to see if this is a society to which we WANT to belong!" Beautiful.

OragamiTulip, maybe there's a Descendants of the Accusers of Salem Witches?

And yes, much of my holiday presents come from Caldwell, too.

SWTXBelle 03-06-2008 10:12 PM

Any time you want to work professionally, honeychile, let me know. I keep threatening my husband with hiring someone to find my proofs . . .

I too would like to get my certification someday (as opposed to being certified!). My problem is that I am not able to get down to Madison all that often and there isn't much around here. I would LOVE to make it out to New England on a research trip one of these years.

The trouble is, getting your certification can leave you certifiable! In all seriousness, a friend of my mother's was on a ticking clock for finding that last proof to connect the dots - and my mother suggested a source. Bingo - her friend was able to get her certification! Ten years later, though, she did pass away from complications of Alzheimers...

A friend of mine who I don't very often recently told me that she was interested in learning how. I offered to help her out, and it's been as interesting for me as it has been for her! Now, to write a beginner's book...!

CutiePie2000 03-07-2008 02:33 AM

Keeping it real, with the original "old school" book cover...

I quite enjoyed the "Daughters of Eve" book by Lois Duncan back in the day, but I'm not in any "Daughters" organization.

That's scary looking - is it a membership selection meeting of a frightening kinda sorority? Why are they ripping up that lovely head shot?

alum 03-07-2008 09:15 AM

I remember this book from jhs! Like many of Lois Duncan's books, the plot is dark and somewhat disturbing. You should be able to find it in the Younfg Adult section of the library.

It's been years since I read the book, but it's basically a "high school sorority" that runs awry and turns psycho / militant-feminist'y.
