Greek Chat Lover's Spring Recruitment Story...Under Alias!
Hello y'all! I'm a new but regular user of Greek Chat, and I created this name to post my recuitment story. Because I love Animal House, the school I go to will now be Faber College, and the 12 sororities will have Animal House character names.
Our school has deferred recruitment, so I'll share my initial impressions after attending a Greek Expo in the fall. Otter: My godmother had been an Otter at Faber, and she warned me that they were very different from what they were in the 1970's. They were a popular house on campus, though they did have a reputation for partying too much. Pinto: The second house on campus, this house was known to have a great group of nice girls with no negative sterotypes. A frat boy friend of mine told me that they were "just a great group of chill girls" (though I shouldn't have listened to a frat boy!). They were known to be growing in popularity. Hoover: This house had recolonized rather recently, and while it was known to have some very nice, pretty girls, it was still growing. Because it was faily new, some girls were skeptical, but it is generally known as a good house to be in. Boon: Primarily made up of Jewish girls, this house had a bad reputation for hazing and partying. Still, it was a popular house, and many girls I knew wanted to be in Boon. Greg Marmalard: Known for having tan, blonde girls, this was among the campuses most popular houses. The largest house on campus, these girls were known primarily for partying. Doug Neidermayer: A popular house on campus, with a large amount of cool girls that I found rather quirky. Their pledge classes were always the most diverse (in personality, hometown, and, for NPC, race). Katy: Known for cool girls with a quirky sense of style. I knew a ton of Katys and wanted to be in that house. Dean Wormer: While Wormer was a popular house on campus, it didn't have the blonde, tan reputation that Otter and Marmalard did. Many girls wanted to be Dean Wormer, but I didn't know much about them. Flounder: The oldest house on campus, Flounder had many wealthy, Jewish girls. They were known for being very selective. Babs: This was the struggling house on campus that had not made quota in a few years. I didn't know any of the girls, I just had heard many rumors that the girls were socially awkward and the frats would not have parties with them. From what I had heard, I did not want to be in Babs. Bluto: While not a widely known house on campus, Bluto had the highest GPA, and was a good house to be in. However, outside of sorority life and good grades, I didn't see any of the members involved visibly around campus. Mandy Pepperidge: Known to be made up of mostly Jewish girls, this house had a reputation for not taking sophomores, and not taking Christian girls. Being a Jewish freshman, I had no worries, until I heard that they cover their girls with honey and feathers during pledging. These are the houses on my campus, in alphabetical order (the code names do not correspond). Rho Gamma Meeting
Fast forward to the week that recruitment begins. Here is how we do it at Faber. On Friday night, you begin open house with four houses, and then visit the remaining eight on Saturday. Saturday night is ranking and processing, and on Sunday, there are up to 9 house visits. You wait an excruciating painful week, and then you go to up to six houses on Friday. Saturday is pref, with up to three houses. Sunday is Bid Day!
So the Wedesday before recruitment, one of my three Rho Gammas called. The first meeting was that thursday night in a classroom. I met with my group Thursday night, and there were 47 girls in my group. (Its competitive at my school. Around 800 girls rushed this year.) Right away, I thought I figured out my Rho Gammas houses. I could tell one awas a Dean Wormer, another may have been a Niedermayer, and the third, who called me, was probably a Babs. Let me introduce my supporting cast, so to speak. I've doctored the names. Kirsti- She was in my rush group, and I had gone out to parties with her before. She was set on Otter or Dean Wormer. Lani- Rushing as a sophomore, Lani wanted Dean Wormer, like her roommate. She became my buddy at breaks between parties. Alexandra- Kirsti's roommate. I hadn't met her before rush, but there were rumors going around that she hated me because I had something with her current boyfriend before I met her. I was a little scared of her. Amanda- Another girl in my rush group that I had known from a freshman orientation thing. She had said she would never rush, but then did, and was rather apprehensive about the process. Lisa- An obnoxious girl in my rush group who knew she had to be in the top houses. She would constantly put down Babs and Hoover. I had liked Hoover at the expo, and wanted her to shut up. Jamie- She was in my rush group and lived in the same building as me. Throughout rush, she would always try to talk me out of my top choices on the way home. Next post....I begin open house! |

Ahh post more!! I'm hooked already, this is gonna be another gold story! |
Open Parties: Part 1
Lets fast forward to the first day of open house parties.
My group met and or Rho Gammas outlined our schedule. Today we will be visiting Otter, Hoover, Niedermaye, and Flounder! Before we went to parties though, we went to the Faber Student Center for what they called Recruitment Kick-Off. The Panhellenic Executive Board introduced themselves, and members from all 12 sororities were there, cheering loudly as each house showed their slideshow. This is where I got really nervous. There were about 800 girls there. I got really worried about being dropped completely. We then began house visits. Otter- I remember being terrified as I walked into the house. I knew the girls would be singing and shouting, but I had no idea it would be that loud and crazy. As we walked in, a girl put her hands on my shoulder and guided me...no...shoved me to her spot in the living room. Conversation was not awkward at all, but I didn't really feel like I connected with the first girl. It got better as I spoke to more girls, but I didn't feel that comfortable at Otter. Hoover- Hoover is a smaller house, so some girls were doubled up. I got doubled up with Amanda, and we spoke to three girls. The first girl spoke to us both, and she was really nice. The second girl, I remember, really only spoke to me. She and I got along really well, but I felt bad that she was ignoring Amanda. The third girl did the same thing! I liked the house a lot, but I felt so bad for Amanda. Niedermayer- I loved this house. Three out of four conversations were great, but one was a little forced. I knew a few girls in this house, so I was happy when a few came over to say hello to me. Flounder- This house had nice girls, but they weren't people I had that much in common with. I also knew, from a source that shouldn't had told me, that they were on social probabtion and couldn't have parties. I had some okay conversations, but knew that I would be dropping this house. The next day, I'll be meeting with the other 8 sororities at Faber! Stay tuned! |

Day 2 Open Parties
I got up, joined my rush group, and began going to parties.
Marmalard: The girl who greeted me took my jacket, checked size and brand, and nodded in approval (???). She led me to a seat in a nice chair in the living room, and the conversation went well, until... Marmalard girl: Do you like your roommate? Me: We get along, but we arent the best of friends. Marmalard: Thats too bad. Why not? Me: She's a sophomore, we don't hang out much. Marmalard: Thats so weird. I don't get that at all. Sooo soooo weird (ect). Me: So, whats your favorite part of Marmalard? Marmalard: Like, thats just so weird. I don't get it. Like, sooo weird I'm not over it... That went on for another five minutes. I did not want to go back to Marmalard, even though it was a top house. (Sidenote: My roommate is actually a complete psycho who dries deer jerky in the room. I generally do not go into detail about her during rush.) Babs: Sweet girls. Very very nice girls. However they were a struggling house, and you could tell how few sisters there were. The girl I spoke to was a complete sweetheart, but I could not connect in conversation with her. I went out of my way to give the girl a chance, but the conversation would not get going. She was a sweetheart, but I could not see myself as a Babs. Pinto: I was in love. Completely. I loved all three girls I spoke too. We could not stop talking, and I think we both were upset when the bell rang and we had to go to the next party. The girls were sweet, cool, and we really connected. I could really see myself in this house. It was my favorite. Katy: I also loved this house. I spoke to a girl who looked almost exactly like me...when the girl who was to bump her came over, she called me by the sisters name. We really connected, and I loved this house. Dean Wormer: I remember really connecting and really liking this house. I liked it alot, but I was not as comfortable as I was at Pinto, Hoover, and Katy. I still really wanted to go back to this house. Boon: Despite this houses bad reputation, I really connected with the girl I spoke to. It was a rough start, as I got lost on entry and no one picked me, up but I loved being in the house. Though I was not from Long Island like the majority of these girls, and I was a bit diferent in personality them (my family is heavily southern), I was suprised how much I liked Boon. Bluto: The first girl I spoke to was nice, but I knew her and inexplicably felt really really awkward around her. The second girl was great though...we got along really well, and she made me really like Bluto. It wasn't my top, but I really wanted to return to Bluto. Mandy: The last house of the day. At this house, the girls sit at your feet to talk to you, so I offered my rusher a spot on the couch next to me. She sat next to me, and told me I was the first to offer her a spot on the couch all day. The second girl I spoke to was great. She was from my hometown, and we had a great conversation. At Faber, you list your 9 favorites and rank your bottom three. My List Pinto Katy Boon Hoover Otter Dean Wormer Niedermayer Bluto Mandy My ranked 1. Marmalard 2. Flounder 3. Babs Kirsti told me thats she had to go back to Otter and Founder, otherwise she wasn't sure. Lani also wanted Dean Wormer. Amanda wasn't sure, but she told me that she really liked Boon and Pinto. Jamie liked Niedermayer and Pinto, and Lisa would only be in Otter or Marmalard. On the way home, Jamie tried to talk me out of liking Pinto. Um, yeah right. The next day, I opened up my invites. I was invited back to... |

From IMDB:
Memorable quotes for Animal House http://imdb.com/title/tt0077975/quotes Trivia for Animal House: http://imdb.com/title/tt0077975/trivia The original house on the University of Oregon campus used for exterior shots of the Delta house is no longer standing. The interior scenes of the Delta house were filmed in a Sigma Nu fraternity. The exterior of the Delta house was a dilapidated house from the 1800's that was torn down in the early 90's. The sorority house's exterior is the real exterior of the Sigma Nu house that was used for the interior scenes. |
OH - GATOR DRILL! (Gamma Phis were NOT allowed to watch as the fraternity men "gatored", so of course they always did at mixers so they could see us all turn on our heels - I had totally forgotten!)

Round 2: Philanthropy
Sunday was the first invitation round, and we could be invited back to a maximum of nine houses. I was naseous with nerves as I sat into my chair, and listened to my Rho Gammas talk about the schedule for the day, what to do if you ended up at the wrong house, and how we should handle our invites. I wished they would stop talking and give out our invites. I was practically shaking. One of the Rho Gammas stepped outside and said we could talk to her if we needed to. Finally, they handed out the slips. Mine said:
Mandy Boon Babs Katy Hoover Pinto I wasn't upset about Otter or Bluto, but I was devastated about Niedermayer. I started crying. I was really upset. I didn't have a full schedule, like so many of the girls in my rush group. I went outside to talk to my Rho Gamma. She told me that six was the average, and though our rush group was pretty abnormal in the amount of girls that had a full schedule. Only 10% of the girls, she told me, got a full schedule. While this may not have been an exact statistic, it did cheer me up. She also pointed out that I really liked five out of six, and those are very good odds. I realized I was lucky when I heard that the largest number of girls ever had less than five invites. I calmed down, and walked to Mandy. Mandy: The girls were really sweet, and we sponge painted bags for their philanthropy (I won't tell you what it is, that might give it away). I really connected with the first girl I spoke to, but not really the second. We watched their video, which made the girls seem like they were a lot of fun. While I still liked this house, I didn't feel the same way about it that I originally had. Boon: I liked this house even more than I had in the beginning. We decorated buckets here with markers for their philanthropy, and then watched the video. The girl I spoke to was great...she told me that her sorority was so supportive, and really helped her find her niche at Faber. She said, "wherever you do end up, even if it isn't here, it will be a good thing". I loved this house, but I felt like I would not be asked back here. Break! I went to cafeteria at the Student Center, and caught up with Lani and Kirsti. Lani only had five invites, and liked only Pinto and Dean Wormer. Kirsti had seven invites, and was livid that she had not been invited back to Dean Wormer, but was really happy to go back to Otter. Amanda was crying, she had only been asked back to Babs, Hoover, and Boon. She had really liked Pinto. Lisa had been asked back to Otter, and would not shut up about it. At that point I realized that I was sitting across from Alexandra. I had heard that she hated me, so I felt really awkward. We looked at each other...I knew who she was, and she knew who I was. Kirsti left to buy gum at the bookstore. I turned to Alexandra. "Hi," I said awkwardly, "I'm LovesSprinkes" "Hi," she said, "I'm Alexandra." *Silence* "Just to clear the air," she said, "I don't actually hate you. I don't hate people I haven't met." "I don't hate you either! Why would I?" "I know! Gossip is sooo stupid!" It turns out that we had the same schedule, only I had Katy and she had Bluto. We spent the entire break talking and laughing, much to the shock and dismay of Kirsti. Babs: We made Valentines here. The first girl I spoke to was super sweet, even though the girl I was doubled with was going out of her way to be rude. First she told the Babs girl that she was seriously bulimic. Then she told her that she hated this school and was only rushing so she could meet frat boys. I felt really bad for the poor girl. The second girl who came to talk to us seemed nice until... Babs girl: What do you do for fun? Me: Well, I like to hang out with my friends, cook, go out, listen to music...really just enjoy college. How about you? Babs: I loveee getting shitfaced! Once I woke up with a black eye...my night must have been fan-fucking-tastic! I sat there in shock, and managed to say something like "oh, um thats nice". I did not want to go back to Babs. Katy: The girl I spoke with was so nice! We connected so much that I forgot to do my craft project. I really liked it at Katy. We went to watch the video, and the Katy girls looked like so much fun. I thought the girls were really nice, until I heard a few making snide remarks towards each other. At that point I wasn't sure I wanted to be in a house where I'd have to balance very nice and kind of mean girls, but I still really liked Katy. Hoover: I loved Hoover. The girls were so nice! I made a dreamcatcher, and talked about rush with the girls. I told the girl I loved the houses I've been to, and she told me that she loved my attitude...girls had been outright mean to her. I really liked these girls and wanted to go back to Hoover. Pinto: Still my favorite. I spoke to a few new girls this time, and we made Build-a-Bears. Their video looked so much fun, and the girl who led me to the video room was hilarious...we walked up the stairs after it was over laughing hysterically! I remember her sister yelling to her "Don't scare the pnms!!!", because she and I were laughing so hard. I really wanted to go back to Pinto. Time for ranking. Since I couldn't drop any houses, I listed all 6. Still, here was my preferential order. Pinto Katy Hoover Boon Mandy Babs I went to grab a late dinner with Jamie. She went out of her way telling me to not concentrate on Katy, because, as she said, "you might not fit in with all those girls". How the hell would she know? She then bragged about how much she likes Niedermayer. I wished she would shut up, and went to dinner. Then, I had to wait a week to find out my invites. Of course, y'all at Greek Chat will not have to wait as long because this whole recruitment is said and done, and I have my results. Also, can anyone figure out which GC member I am? |

Day 3: House Tours
I had to wait all week, but Friday had finally come and I would go to up to six parties that night. I got a french manicure that morning, and had coffee with Alexandra before my 12:30 class. She was stressed, so we talked about everything not involving rush. It did not help matters for her that Kirsti, her roommate, discussed rush night and day.
I went with Jamie to the meet with my rush group. Again, the rho gammas took about four hours to hand out our invites...I was shaking! Here were my invites... Pinto Hoover Boon Babs Again I was upset that I did not have a full schedule, but I was not as devastated as the week before. I also wasn't upset that Katy had dropped me...throughout the week I had met girls from that house that were very sweet, and others who were not nice girls. I had decided that I did not want that dynamic in my house. I was thrilled to go back to Pinto, happy to go back to Hoover and Boon, but I did not want another awkward experience at Babs. Babs: The first girl I spoke to was very sweet. I wished she would stop telling me about the Wii in the sorority basement though. I grew up forbidden to play video games, so I really did not know how to contribute to the conversation. The second girl, however, was the same girl who from last weekend who told me about how she loved to drink and black out. Luckily this time, the girl I doubled with had the same lip ring as the rusher, so they had a conversation while I sat there trying to think of something to add to the conversation. I was relieved when they started our tour. The house was gorgeous, and I saw Alexandra walking with another tour group. I turned to wave at her, lost my footing, and went flying down the stairs! Oops. I was so embarassed, but the girls were sweet. Still, this house was not the one for me. Boon: I really liked this house. I really connected with both the girls I spoke to, and began to feel very comfortable at Boon. This was a suprise, because I never expected to like Boon at all. As they led me through the house, which was old, but very pretty inside, I started to really realize how much I liked Boon. Still, I doubted that I would be asked back for pref. I had a break at this point, so I spoke to Lani. She only had three houses, and was happy with Pinto and Dean Wormer, but hated Babs. Turns out she had the lip ring girl, only in her case, the lip ring girl told her about her...um...below the waist piercings. Hoover: I really liked this house. I loved the girls I spoke to, and I loved how each one of them was so different, but I still connected to them all. They had recolonized fairly recently, but the girls were so sweet, pretty, and cool that you never would have known that Hoover was a smaller newer house. I felt very comfortable with Hoover. Pinto: Alexandra and I were paired together at Pinto. Our rusher, Leah, asked us if we had been friends before rush. The three of us had a great conversaton...it had been the best conversation where I had been doubled up to a rusher. The girls who gave a tour of Pinto's gorgeous house was a comedy team, and I loved them. I got into conversation with them on our tour, and it was like talking to my best friends. I walked out of the house loving Pinto. That night, I went and listed the ones I wanted to go back to for pref, and ranked my bottom house. My favorites: Pinto Boon Hoover Ranked 1. Babs I went to sleep terrified, knowing that the houses would make a lot of cuts that night. |
